It's going to be a great spring season here at Nighttown. We've just added seventeen new showsincluding Mike Clark / Donald Harrison, Steve Wilson, Chuchito Valdes, Anne Cochran / AbeLeMarca, Pat Martino, Charlie Hunter, Tom Chapin, and more. Check em all out below.

This week, we've got a really fun week, starting on Monday with Canadian guitar sensation EwanDobson. Ewan is so popular that one of his videos have had over 20 million views.

Wednesday, Bert Stratton brings his great Klezmer music back to Nighttown.

On Friday, check out one of NE Ohio's favorite contemporary jazz groups, Forecast.

Then on Saturday, one of the coolest jazz groups around, Tony Cuda's Jazz Cats, returns toNighttown.

Nighttown Student Discount PolicyStudents up to age 26 are 1/2 off the regular price. Student priced tickets are only available the night of theshow, are available only at the door, and are subject toavailability. Students must have a photo ID from agenerally-recognized high school, college or university. Full-paying ticket holders get priority on admission andseating. Certain select shows have no discount based onarrangements with the artist. On evenings when there aretwo shows (i.e. shows at 7 & 9PM), the discount is onlygood for the second show. Students under the age of 18must be accompanied by an adult paying full price inorder to be eligible for the discount.

“Klezmer Guy” is humorist, landlord and clarinetist Bert Stratton. He is a frequent contributor tothe New York Times, the Plain Dealer and CoolCleveland.com

Expect an evening of social commentary, plumbing tips and song. As if Garrison Keillor wasraised on pastrami!Alan Douglass on keyboards and vocals, and Tamar Gray on vocals. The group plays klezmer, TinPan Alley, swing and Motown.

Klezmer music is a hybrid of Eastern European Jewish folk music, American swing, Yiddishtheater tunes and Israeli horas. The Evening Post of Wellington, New Zealand called it "adelicious concoction that sounds like jazz but with 11 secret herbs and spices added." Klezmermeans "village musician" in Yiddish.

Yiddishe Cup's first album, Klezmerized, is "a perfect introduction to klezmer," said the ClevelandFree Times. The New York Jewish Week rated the band's second release, Yiddfellas, one of the top13 Jewish albums of 1999. Meshugeneh Mambo is a klezmer comedy album. Ari Davidow, of theKlezmershack Web site, called the recording: "The most outrageous combination of '50s BorschtBelt shtick and post-modern Jewish deconstruction I've heard in years and, boy, did we need it." The band's latest release is Klezmer Guy.

Music editors at the Cleveland Free Times named Yiddishe Cup the best "ethnic/world" band in2000.

Yiddishe Cup's music is in the movie "Harley Son of David" (Avner Levona, director; Canada/ USA,2006; UK Jewish Film Festival, 2006) and the Jewish Museum's exhibit "Chagall and the Artists ofthe Russian Jewish Theater, 1919-1949" (New York City, 2008-09). Yiddishe Cup is on the SonyGermany CD compilation Balkan Basics World Tour II (2009).

Forecast is the leading contemporary jazz group in the Northeast Ohio area. Founding membersLem Adams on vibes and Gary Stephenson on electric bass have been entertaining Ohioaudiences for over 20 years. Tony Cuda is a bass player and composer. He is a graduate of Cleveland Hts High. Tonyattended Berklee College of Music in Boston for 3 years in the late 1970's and received a Mastersdegree from John Carroll University in education. His musical influences include Weather Report,Chic Corea, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles Davis, Yes, King Crimson and many others. As part ofCuDa, RenKo & CuDa, the band released 3 CD's and performed as an opening act for manyinternational artists.

Dave Sterner is a 1992 graduate of Indiana University’s Jazz Studies. In addition to teaching forthe Tri-C jazz program, Mr. Sterner conducts the Lakeland Community College Civic JazzOrchestra and co-directs the Lakeland Jazz Festival. Dave has recorded with the Ernie Krivda FatTuesday Big band, the Jazz Heritage Orchestra, the N. Glenn Davis Quintet (featuring PhilWoods), and the Dave Sterner Quintet.

Dan Maier attended Berklee School, New England Conservatory, and studied jazz piano withLennie Tristano, Jaki Byard, Ran Blake. In NYC, Dan was a member of Blood, Sweat, and Tears,and toured with Philip Glass and Woody Herman. In Cleveland, Dan plays at the jazz club,Nighttown, where he recently led trios for Cheryl Bentine of Manhattan Transfer, Nicole Henry,Alexis Cole, Jackie Ryan, and Ann Hampton Callaway.

Chris Cuda is a self-taught acoustic/electric/synth guitarist. Chris has a new release coming outthis year with Kip Reed (Bass), Steve Renko (Drums), as well as other guests. Chris has recordedand/or performed with David Thomas (Rocket From The Tombs & Pere Ubu), Horns & Things,Sonny Geraci (The Outsiders), Len Berry, Tommy Roe, Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon, Leslie Gore,Billy J. Krammer, The Shangri-La’s, Gilby Clarke (Guns & Roses, MC5, Heart), and Chris's primaryband - CuDa RenKo CuDa since 2006.

Steve Renko, received his first drumset at sixteen months and has been playing ever since. Atnine, hestarted studying with Bob McKee. . At age fourteen Steve joined Ernie Krivda's FatTuesday Big Band. Steve has performed with the likes of Wynton Marsalis, Sammy Nestico, AlJarreau, Dave Koz, Jeff and John Clayton, Bobby Watson, and Terrance Blanchard. Steve iscurrently pursuing his undergraduate degree at The New School for Jazz in NYC.

Joe Miller is one of the most sought-after trumpet players in the area. Joe has toured andperformed with the Grammy-nominated Liquid Soul and with Bobby Caldwell. His recordingcredits Kenny Anderson, and the late Gerald Levert. Joe has performed with many internationalartists, including Aretha Franklin, Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis, The Funk Brothers, Frankie Valli,and many others. Joe currently holds the lead trumpet chair at Playhouse Square and has playedmany of the hottest Broadway musicals. Joe teaches at Cleveland State University, and performsand with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, Paul Ferguson’s Jazz Orchestra, and Sammy Deleon’sOrquestra.

Cyrille Aimée’s (pronounced Surreal M-A) unique blend of French gypsy jazz and Dominicanrhythm and spice combine to create an unmistakably smooth and driving vocal style. Growingup with the French Gypsies in Samois sur Seine brought her into the musical mentality thatproduced such legends as Django Reinhardt. In 2010 she was a finalist in the Thelonious MonkInternational Vocal Competition.

While being trained at the conservatory of SUNY Purchase, Cyrille Aimée competed in the famousMontreux Jazz Festival Vocal Competition, where she was awarded first prize as well as the publicprize. It was there she first met Brazilian guitarist Diego Figueiredo, who was also a finalist inthe Montreux Guitar Competition.

Diego Figueiredo (pronounced fig-a-reed-o) is considered one of the most talented guitar playersin the world today. He is the winner of several important competitions including the Montreux

Diego has released over nineteen albums to date, threeDVD’s, and several instructional books. His music is a fusion between Jazz, Bossa Nova andClassical. Diego’s unique interpretations, along with his phenomenal technique and emotion, hascreated an explosion of adoring fans and concert goers. Diego has performed in over fortycountries around the world.

Diego Figueiredo was born in Franca, Brazil in 1980. At the age of four he used to strike posescarrying his small guitar. At six, he received a mandolin, which was kept in a very special placein his house. Diego played many instruments before choosing the electric guitar when he wastwelve. By the age of fifteen, he was playing theaters and nightclubs throughout Brazil, playingboth solo and with many renowned Brazilian musicians.

Diego’s strong emotion and incredible technique blend perfectly with Cyrille Aimée’s bold andbeautiful vocal interpretations to form an original, yet timeless sound. Influences drawn fromacross the globe can be found in each song.

Cyrille currently resides in Brooklyn, while Diego still lives in Franca Brazil

The Kandinsky Effect is a post-modern jazz Trio searching for new ways toimprovise within the jazz idiom by blending the borders of jazz, rock, electronica,hip-hop, and experimental sounds to create a truly singular voice withininstrumental music. Improvisation is ever-present, and spontaneity is paramount.

The band has been touring extensively throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europeover the last few years building new audiences with an adventurous yet accessiblesound and a flair for the unexpected.

As the Los Angeles Times puts it : “The young Paris-based trio, The KandinskyEffect, offers an invigorating approach to modern jazz and improvisation…”

Warren Walker, Saxophone and Effects - WARREN WALKER is a saxophonist,composer, educator and producer of considerable artistry and stylistic breadth. Arising star in the European Jazz Scene, Warren hails from Grass Valley, Californiawhere he decided at a very young age to dedicate his life to music.Holding a BM degree from the University of Nevada. During his time at theuniversity, he also had the opportunity to share the stage with Joshua Redman,Dave Holland, Michael Brecker, Tim Warfield, Robin Eubanks, and Bob Berg. Aftergraduating Warren was one of three musicians worldwide selected to perform withthe Faenza International Saxophone Festival, where he spent three weeks touringcentral Italy. Residing in Paris since February 2007, Warren is now performing andtouring internationally with The Kandinsky Effect and other projects based withinParis.

Gael Petrina, Bass and Effects - Coming from a unique cultural back-round andhaving been raised in Buenos Aires, Los Angeles, London and Paris, Gael has beeninfluenced by (and plays) many forms of music i.e. rock, hip hop, latin, classicaland electronica whilst still remaining heavily rooted in Jazz and improvised music. Caleb Dolister – Drums - Caleb was born into a musical family. He startedperforming with the family band when he was eight and later started forming hisown projects by age twelve. At seventeen, he began jazz studies at the Universityof Nevada, Reno. Since 2006, Caleb has been actively touring and traveling towork on multiple music projects. He has spent significant time recording inNashville, TN, and in Los Angeles, CA. In 2009, he took time off the road to work onhis second solo project (known as Daily Thumbprint Collection). The albumincludes more than twenty world class musicians from around the country. Caleb’s25+ year career includes performance on over 30 commercially released albums,and production/engineering credits on an additional 10 projects. Caleb currentlylives in New York.

Featuring:John Clayton-acoustic bass & Gerald Clayton-piano.John Clayton is a natural born multitasker -composer, arranger, conductor,producer, educator, and yes, extraordinary bassist. With a Grammy on his shelfand eight additional nominations, artists such as Diana Krall, Paul McCartney,Regina Carter, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Gladys Knight, Queen Latifah, and CharlesAznavour vie for a spot on his crowded calendar.

In 1969, at the age of 16, he enrolled in bassist Ray Brown's jazz class at UCLA,beginning a close relationship that lasted more than three decades. Aftergraduating from Indiana University's School of Music in 1975, he toured with theMonty Alexander Trio (1975-77), the Count Basie Orchestra (1977-79), and settledin as principal bassist with the Amsterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in Amsterdam,Netherlands (1980-85).

In 1985 he returned to California, co-founded the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestrain 1986, rekindled the The Clayton Brothers quintet. In 1988 he joined the facultyof the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music.

Career highlights include arranging the 'Star Spangled Banner" for WhitneyHouston's performance at Super Bowl 1990 (the recording went platinum), playingbass on Paul McCartney's CD "Kisses On The Bottom," arranging and playing basswith Yo-Yo Ma and Friends on "Songs of Joy and Peace, and numerous recordingswith Diana Krall, the Clayton Brothers, the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz, Orchestra, MiltJackson, Monty Alexander and many others.

In 2013 John launched a new album series titled The John Clayton Parlor Series - acollection of rare duo collaborations with musical friends, released throughArtistShare. The series' first release, Parlor Series Vol. 1 Featuring Gerald Clayton,is available now.

Gerald ClaytonOver the course of eight years, with three albums as a leader and countlessworldwide performances, pianist and composer Gerald Clayton has establishedhimself as a leading figure in the up-and-coming generation of jazz artists.

Clayton took his first piano lessons before age seven. Music was a central part ofhis life from as long as he can remember and it became a lifetime commitmentvery early on. Clayton attended the L.A. County High School for the Arts and thenenrolled at the USC Thornton School of Music..

In 2006, Gerald received the second place prize in the prestigious Thelonius MonkInstitute of Jazz Piano Competition. Around that time, he was introduced totrumpeter Roy Hargrove. The association resulted in three years of extensive

Gerald also appeared onrecordings by several other artists, such as Diana Krall, Ambrose Akinmusire,Kendrick Scott, Melissa Morgan, Terell Stafford & Dick Oatts, Dayna Stephens, TerriLyne Carrington, and the Clayton Brothers Quintet.

In 2009, he released Two Shade, his debut album. Gerald received a 2010Grammy nomination in the category of ‘Best Improvised Jazz Solo’ for his renditionof Cole Porter’s “All of You.”

In 2011, Gerald received a second Grammy nomination, this time for ‘Best JazzInstrumental Composition’, for his piece “Battle Circle” featured on the ClaytonBrothers recording, The New Song and Dance.

Legendary Jazz Guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli celebrates his 89thBirthday at Nighttown with All-Star Quartet featuring: BuckyPizzarelli-guitar, Martin Pizzarelli-acoustic bass, KonradPaszkudzki-piano, and Dag Markhus-drums.John 'Bucky' Pizzarelli (1926) began his professional career in 1943 at 17 years oldplaying in the Vaughn Monroe dance band. He toured and recorded with Monroethrough 1951, and in 1952 he joined NBC as a staff musician. At NBC, for manyyears, he played in the Doc Severinson Band on the Tonight Show. He also touredand recorded with Benny Goodman into the 1980's.

In New York, Pizzarelli worked mainly as a freelance musician in the studios and heappeared on many recordings as part of the rhythm section. One of the era's mostsolid rhythm players, Pizzarelli was in high demand to provide propulsion andbackground for other musicians.

His recordings as leader began to appear in the 1970's with recordings like GreenGuitar Blues. On this recording Pizzarelli established a pattern he repeated

On this recording he pays homage to CarlKress and Dick McDonough by including Chicken A La Swing. A few years later hepaid tribute to these two guitarists again on his Guitar Quintet LP. On April Kissesfrom 1999, he includes original music by Carl Kress, George Van Eps and GeorgeM. Smith.

Bucky Pizzarelli has carried forward other jazz guitar traditions as well.

His extraordinary skill as a rhythm player places him in the company of the greatrhythm players like Freddie Greene and Barry Galbraith. And he has broughtforward the great chord solo tradition begun by George Van Eps and DickMcDonough. Like George Van Eps, Bucky Pizzarelli adopted the seven-stringelectric guitar (in fact, playing the Gretsch Van Eps model for many years). And,although this guitar is very popular today, for many years, Bucky Pizzarelli, wasconsidered the only guitarist next to George Van Eps, to play the seven-stringelectric guitar exclusively.

Along with being a dedicated preservationist of the old guitar music and the earlystyles of playing, Bucky Pizzarelli has also developed a very personal style that setshim apart. Recordings like Love Songs and NY Swing present a picture of thecomplete jazz musician and guitarist who moves effortlessly from the dauntingformat of the solo guitar to playing solid, swinging rhythm and single string solos inan ensemble setting.

Influenced by DinahWashington, Jackie Wilson, Dave Brubeck and Little Richard. The height of hisyoung career as a local singer was to land a huge gig with one of Cleveland's mostmemorable and popular horn bands, Rastus. In the 80's Scottie Bros/CBS Recordsreleased "LaMarca", a solo endeavor that found this soul lover singing some catchypop songs, a few of which made it to the big screen, Most notably, "Hold on BlueEyes" from the movie "The Wraith" starring Charlie Sheen. He spent most of the90's raising his kids in Cleveland and singing radio jingles and T.V. commercials. In2005, Abe decided to make the move to Las Vegas where he worked at just aboutevery hotel on and off The Strip.

Jackie Warren is one of the most in demand and prolific jazz artists working in the Great Lakesregion. On any given night she can be found playing solo, leading her trio, or she may be heardas the featured soloist and arranger for Sammy DeLeon's Salsa and Latin-Jazz ensemble.

Jackie is also a professor of music at Tri-C and has several private students. Jackie gets callsconstantly from vocalists who want her to back them, and she is frequently called on to guestwith national artists. In the past few years Jackie has performed with David "Fathead" Newman,Bobby Watson, Jane Bunnett, and Gerald Wilson. Innovative guitarist and Trio return to Nighttown: Featuring: Charlie Hunter-guitar, Bobby Previte-drums, & Carly Myers-trombone.

As a young guitarist growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, Charlie Hunter waslooking for a way to stand out in the '80s. His primary influences were jazz greatJoe Pass and the fluid Tuck Andress (of the guitar/vocal duo Tuck & Patti), both six-string guitarists who were adept at blending bass notes into their standard guitarmelodies to make themselves sound like two musicians at once. But Hunterwanted to take it one step further, and set out to find an instrument on which hecould simultaneously function as both a guitarist and a bassist. For his self-titled1993 debut CD, Hunter played a seven-string guitar for the duality effect, lockingdown the bottom with drummer Jay Lane and mixing melodically with saxophonistDavid Ellis. But on his trio's 1995 sophomore release, Bing, Bing, Bing!, Hunterunveiled his custom-made Novax eight-string, the guitar that finally allowed him torealize his capacity. Designed by Ralph Novak, the instrument featured specialfrets and separate signals for its guitar and bass portions. Picking bass notes withhis right thumb while fretting them with his left index finger (while at the same timefingerpicking guitar chords and single notes with his right hand's remaining fourdigits as he frets with his left hand's other three fingers), Hunter achieves the realsound of two-for-one.

Hunter played with the side group T.J. Kirk in the mid-'90s, a band that derived theirname from the cover material they exclusively played: Thelonious Monk, JamesBrown, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Initially wanting to call themselves James T. Kirkbefore being threatened by the Star Trek TV and film series, T.J. Kirk released aself-titled 1995 debut and the 1996 follow-up, If Four Was One, before disbanding.Hunter took drummer Scott Amendola with him for his next project, an ambitiousinstrumental remake of Bob Marley's Natty Dread album in its entirety. Alsofeaturing saxophonists Kenny Brooks and Calder Spanier, the 1997 release beatthe odds by becoming arguably Hunter's best album. After Spanier died frominjuries sustained from being hit by a car, Hunter moved east to New York, takingAmendola with him. Teaming with vibraphonist Stefon Harris and percussionistJohn Santos, Charlie Hunter & Pound for Pound's 1998 CD Return of the Candymanis dedicated to Spanier. A departure from Natty Dread, mainly due to the work ofHarris, the disc featured a vibes-heavy cover of Steve Miller's "Fly Like an Eagle."

Hunter's modus operandi had now become shifting personnel changes, and inbetween tours. Charley’s new project includes Bobby Previte on drums, & CarlyMyers on trombone.

Trio of Tuvan Throat Singers from Siberia bring their unique and sensationalartistry to Nighttown stage!

Alash Ensemble is a trio of master throat singers (xöömeizhi) from Tuva, a tinyrepublic in the heart of Central Asia. The ancient art of throat singing (xöömei)developed among the nomadic herdsmen of this region. Alash remains groundedin this tradition while expanding its musical vocabulary with new ideas from theWest.

All members of Alash were trained in traditional Tuvan music since childhood, firstlearning from their families, and later becoming students of master throat singers.In 1999, as students at Kyzyl Arts College, they formed a group called Changy-Xaya. They practiced in the damp college basement on Kochetovo Street, andsoon became the resident traditional ensemble on campus. At the same time theylearned about western music, practiced on hybrid Tuvan-European instruments,and listened to new trends coming out of America. Under the guidance of Kongar-ool Ondar (best known to western audiences for his role in the film Genghis Blues),

They introduced the guitar andsometimes even the Russian bayan (accordion) into their arrangements, alongsidetheir traditional Tuvan instruments. They experimented with new harmonies andsong structures. The effect is an intriguing mixture of old and new.

The musicians are inspired by the music of their grandparents, great-grandparents, and the great musicians of Tuva and Central Asia. At the same timethey are influenced by such western artists as Sun Ra and Jimi Hendrix. Yet theAlash musicians never sacrifice the integrity of their heritage in an effort to maketheir music more hip for an American audience. Rather they look forcontemporary ideas that mesh well with the sound and feel of traditional Tuvanmusic.

In a career that spans five decades, 23 albums and three GRAMMY awards, multi-talented singer/songwriter/guitarist Tom Chapin has covered an incredible amountof creative ground. In addition to his work as a recording artist and concertperformer, Chapin has acted on Broadway, as well as working extensively in films,television and radio.

As a music-maker, Chapin has maintained two long and productive parallelcareers, both as a highly respected contemporary folk artist and as a pioneer inthe field of children's music. In the former role, Chapin has established areputation for insightful, heartfelt songcraft and effortlessly charismatic liveperformances. Chapin's infectious songs, sterling musicianship and personalwarmth consistently shine through, whether he's performing on record or in aconcert hall, an outdoor festival, a school, in front of a symphony orchestra or in anintimate coffeehouse.

The New York Times called Chapin "one of the great personalities in contemporaryfolk music."

The son of noted jazz drummer and teacher Jim Chapin and the grandson ofauthor/critic Kenneth Burke and portrait painter James Chapin, Tom grew up in afamily that encouraged artistic pursuits. He began performing professionally as ateenager in the early 1960s, playing in Greenwich Village folk clubs alongside hissiblings Harry and Steve as The Chapin Brothers.

Chapin launched his solo recording career with 1976's Life Is Like That. It was thefirst of a string of albums that further established his reputation as both a giftedstoryteller and a natural entertainer, winning him an uncommonly loyal fan base inthe process. He also continued to venture into other creative areas, playing thelead role in the hit Broadway musical Pump Boys and Dinettes, working off-Broadway as musical director of both Cotton Patch Gospel and Harry Chapin: Liesand Legends, and serving as host of TV's National Geographic Explorer. He's alsowritten and performed satirical topical songs for National Public Radio's MorningEdition, and had a cameo role as the Vice Presidential candidate in JonathanDemme's 2004 remake of The Manchurian Candidate.

A new CD, Put A Light In Your Window, features original songs, one completelyreinterpreted song, and a cover of a folk classic.

With Laura Webster and Jim Carr on guitar andvocals as well as Nikki Custy on vocals and fiddle, the soothing acoustic sounds ofthis trio are well balanced with rousing fiddle and world music. Frequentperformers in the Cleveland area, audiences are captivated by their easy style andversatile instrumentation. These three seasoned performers draw a crowdwherever they play.

From Cleveland, Ohio, Laura Webster spent much of her early career as a leadsinger and songwriter in New York City, performing in clubs throughout themetropolitan area. In the 1990s, Laura studied music at Sarah Lawrence Collegein New York. She formed the folk-blues band “The Stompers” with guitarist DanIsenberg and performed on campus and at local clubs. She was lead vocalist forthe rock band, “the Meteors” and the lead singer and songwriter for the funk band,“Tropic of Cancer.” Laura’s debut album, “Coming Home” was released in Januaryof 2004. This initial collection of original songs showcases her musical breadth asshe steps up her performing career. More recently, Laura is the vocal arts directorat Hathaway Brown School where she started a jazz solo class for singers anddirects two vocal ensembles. Webster is in demand as a classical soloist as well asjazz solo artist throughout the Cleveland area.

Jim Carr, guitarist, vocalist, composer, is a fixture in the local music scene. Jimperforms a wide array from swing, pop, bossa, flamenco, and celtic. Jim appearedas guitarist with Anne Cochran last year at Nighttown, and currently performs withthe Celtic group, Pitch the Peat. As a composer, his choral works have beenperformed by The Seraphim Singers (Boston), New England Opera Club, andHathaway Brown. Jim is Director of Music at Church of St. Dominic in Shaker Hts.
