This record proves that the tradition doesn´t have tostay in the past. Tradition can indeed be brought into the future.

From a tender young age it was clear that Jason Marsalis had what it took to be great.Jason is the son of pianist and music educator Ellis Marsalis and his wife Dolores, and the

Page 8: Nighttown / Jim Wadsworth Productionslive.ezezine.com/ezine/pdf/640_2-2017.08.20.19.49.archive.pdf · (view all archives) Amazing Week - Diego Figueiredo from Brasil, Dave Stryker,

Jason is the son of pianist and music educator Ellis Marsalis and his wife Dolores, and theyoungest sibling of Wynton, Branford and Delfeayo. Together, the four brothers and theirpatriarch Ellis, comprise New Orleans venerable first family of jazz.

Ellis and Dolores began to cultivate Jason’s interest in music at age three, with thepurchase of a toy set of drums. By age six, not only had Jason gotten his first real drumset, but he was also taking lessons from the legendary New Orleans drummer JamesBlack. Jason was progressing so rapidly as a drummer that in 1984 his father started usinghim consistently on engagements.

Shortly after graduation from arts high school in 1995, Marsalis ascended to the drumthrone of a new group lead by virtuoso pianist and former sideman for Wynton Marsalis,Marcus Roberts. Despite a demanding touring schedule with Roberts. It was in 1998 thatJason co-founded the Latin-jazz group Los Hombres Calientes.

In 2000, Jason left the Los Hombres group to attain more focus with the Marcus Robertstrio. It was around that time the Marsalis started to play the vibraphone on gigs in NewOrleans. It was in April of 2008 that Marsalis was asked to play the vibraphone with thelegendary Lionel Hampton Orchestra at the Ogden Museum in New Orleans. In fall of thatyear, he was on a double-bill tour with Double-wide and a jazz-fusion group from Denton,Texas, Snarky Puppy. After that tour, Marsalis would make guest appearances with thegroup and has developed a following amongst the groups fans.

In 2009, the Marsalis Family would receive the NEA Jazz Masters award. In June of thatyear, the family would appear at the White House and the Kennedy Center to do a tributeshow to their father. Later that year, Marsalis would release his first new album in 9 yearsand his debut album on vibes, “Music Update”.

2013 was a monumental year in which Marsalis released his next recording as a leader onvibes entitled “In a World of Mallets”. The album went to number 1 on the CMJ RadioCharts and also won an Offbeat Magazine award, a New Orleans music magazine, for bestContemporary Jazz Album. There was even recordings from the drum kit as Marcus Robertsreleased three recordings that year. Two with Wynton Marsalis, “Together Again – In theStudio” and “Together Again – Live in Concert”, and the ambitious original trio suite fromRoberts, “From Rags to Rhythm”.

With each passing year Jason Marsalis continues to grow and develop as both a composerand performer. With a fire in his heart and a passion for the music, his will to swing hasnever been more resolute. The maturity and the command he possesses over his music isclearly evident to those who have heard or seen him.

Tracy Marie & David Mayfield w/guest Maddie Finn$10.00 Thursday 9/14 8:00 pm Buy Tickets

North Coast Singer/Songwriters hit the Stage at Nighttown!Singer-songwriter, Tracy Marie is about to release her latest Studio recordproduced by David Mayfield. Together her and Mayfield selected 11 Tracks of hermore than 150 title song catalog including the title track, "Beautiful Mess". TracyMarie, a native of South Euclid has been performing original music as well aspaying tribute to her favorite artists in and around Cleveland since the late 90s withlocal blues bands to more intimate solo acoustic performances where sheaccompanies herself on both piano and guitar. She has also expanded her travelsfrom LA to New York City where she was invited to perform with Buddy Miles and inNashville where she performed her own original song at the Ryman Auditorium.

If you’ve seen David Mayfield perform with The Avett Brothers, Mumford & Sons,Jessica Lea Mayfield, or at Bonnaroo, you’ve caught the charisma, the heart, andthe comedy, and it's likely you’ll come back for more.

This singer-songwriter, band leader, and Grammy nominated producer stepped outof the sideman shadows with his 2011 album "The David Mayfield Parade" hisfollow-up "Good Man Down" was self released and funded with a surprisingsuccesful Kickstarter campaign that more than doubled its initial goal of $18,000.On the heels of that sucsess, Mayfield has partnered with Compass Records. A labelthat Playboy Magaizne calls "Nashville's hippest alternative label"

STRANGERS, Mayfield’s first album with Compass, is a tour de force, stretching fromthe avant-garde to Mayfield’s musical roots, which are buried deep in the bluegrasstradition from a childhood of touring with his family’s band. Tracks range from theCeltic-inspired opener “Caution,” which features Mayfield’s deft ability inorchestrating complex instrumentation, to “The Man I’m Trying to Be,” a sharplyhonest song that is as dark and it is tender. Mayfield is truly a wordsmith, forgingthe mundane into the evocative in each track, most notably with “Ohio (It’s Fake),”whose innovative lyrics are propelled from acoustic beginnings into a pure popfinish, Mayfield’s trembling tenor rising above the grooving band. With the releaseof Strangers, David Mayfield is clearly going places, fueled by a deadly combinationof infectious energy and songwriting chops that only come around once in a bluemoon.

After a year of college, Ken joined the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra under the direction ofBuddy Morrow. “Buddy heard me with my quartet at a Cleveland jazz festival along withTeddy Wilson’s trio and the Dorsey band, and made an offer right then and there for me tonot only play lead alto, but to have a feature spot on the clarinet with the rhythm section.

In 1984, Benny Goodman came out of retirement and put together a new band, hiring Kenon tenor saxophone. “I think Benny was as great a figure to the clarinet as LouisArmstrong was to the trumpet.

A.J. Croce$20.00 Friday 9/22 8:30 pm Buy Tickets

Dynamic Vocalist, Pianist & Son of Legendary Singer Songwriter Jim Croce hitsthe stage at Nighttown!

According to Willie Nelson, “A.J. Croce has wisdom beyond his years. With his music,he represents his generation with a profound sense of honesty in his lyrics andquality in his delivery. The future of entertainment is safe in his hands!”

A.J. Croce has been inextricably linked to a version of his own story by virtue of hisname. He’s experienced a lifetime of comparisons to a father he lost at age two, whose music bears little resemblance to his own output yet still serves as areference point despite the years that have passed and the many iconic mentorswho have stepped in to offer their counsel, creativity, and endorsement throughouthis long career.

It’s curious that it now feels necessary to include the reference, as enough time haspassed that a new generation of tastemakers and journalists might not know whoJim Croce was — that he was a golden-voiced everyman, a singer-songwriter-

Page 18: Nighttown / Jim Wadsworth Productionslive.ezezine.com/ezine/pdf/640_2-2017.08.20.19.49.archive.pdf · (view all archives) Amazing Week - Diego Figueiredo from Brasil, Dave Stryker,

Jim Croce was — that he was a golden-voiced everyman, a singer-songwriter-guitarist who died too soon, leaving one of pop music’s most beautiful andmemorable ballads (written about a young A.J.) in his wake.

Croce the younger, on the other hand, is a piano man, first and foremost, and avocal stylist second. His muted growl pulls from a host of American traditions andanti-heroes — it’s part New Orleans, part juke joint, part soul, but somehow evokesNew York, a continuum where John Lurie meets Lou Reed. He is further asongwriter, driven by a personal muse, informed by a life on a boomerang oftragedy.

His gritty and accomplished ninth studio album, produced by legendary soul singer-songwriter and producer Dan Penn, is the latest and arguably greatest effort yet.Penn, of course, is writer of such hits as “The Dark End of the Street,” “Cry Like aBaby,” “I’m Your Puppet” and “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man,” and producer ofthe Box Tops’ “The Letter,” as well as songs and recordings by Jerry Lee Lewis,Bobby Blue Bland, Clarence Carter, and Alex Chilton. Also making appearances areGrammy Award-winning country artist Vince Gill, Steve Cropper (Booker T. & theMGs, Blues Brothers, author of many Stax hits), the McCrary Sisters and the MuscleShoals Horns.

Croce has lived longer now than his father did — at 45, he is 15 years beyond theage his father was when he died. With Just Like Medicine (due out August 11, 2017on Compass Records) an authentic version of his story, which contains bothunimaginable sorrow and many blessings, can be felt and understood.

"Just Like Medicine’s" second track, “The Heart That Makes Me Whole,” was writtenby Croce with the late great Leon Russell.

A.J. Croce’s nine albums have been released via both major and independentlabels, and have charted 17 Top 20 singles and all nine albums on the radioincluding on Top 40, Americana, Independent, Blues, and Jazz. A virtuoso pianoplayer, he has performed at a TED Talk and gave a master class at the University ofBarcelona. Croce has also performed on major talk shows and news programsincluding The Late Show, The Tonight Show, The Today Show, CNN, MTV, and VH1.

Cleveland Jazz Legend & Hammond B-3 Master leads All-Star Group live atNighttown!

Featuring: Eddie Baccus Sr.-Hammond B-3 Organ, Cecil Rucker-vibes, Billy Artis-guitar, Perry Williams III-drums, Mike Cady-vocals + Special Guests TBA

One of the senior statesman of the Cleveland Jazz Scene, organist Eddie Baccus Sr.has set the standard locally since the early 1960's. Like the late great Jimmy Smith,Baccus is a virtuoso on the Hammond B-3, equally adept at soul jazz and bebop. Inmany ways Eddie Baccus Sr. has been to the jazz scene what the late Robert Jr.Lockwood was to the local blues scene; he has been a leader, mentor, and the soulof the community for many years.

Early on his talent was evident as he was linked with another jazz legend, saxophonist Roland Kirk. Baccus and Kirk were schoolmates at the Ohio School ofthe Blind and their sessions together in the old Euclid and 105th area are the stuffof local legends. Kirk would go on to national acclaim before his untimely death inthe late 70's. Baccus stayed close to home and it has been our good fortune.

Eddie Baccus Sr. has been a mentor to countless Cleveland jazz musicians, notablyJoe Lovano, Ernie Krivda, and more recently his son, Eddie Baccus Jr.. His work hasonly been documented infrequently. He recorded an LP with Kirk back in 1962"Feel Real" on Smash records. His other recording is a session done with Lovano inthe mid 1980's entitled "Hometown Sessions". Although he has not gone on togreater glory playing the national circuit, Eddie Baccus Sr. has been the bedrockof the Cleveland jazz scene and his influence on fans and musicians alike has beeninvaluable. Joining Eddie Baccus Sr. for his appearance at Nighttown will be an All-StarCleveland lineup. They are Cecil Rucker on the Vibes. Eddie Sr. has frequentlyappeared with Cecil's group Good Vibes. Billy Artis is on guitar. Many willremember Billy from his days backing the late great Bill Doggett at the Theatrical indowntown Cleveland. Perry Williams III is on drums. Perry is a veteran on the souljazz circuit and has worked with Eddie Sr. and Cecil extensively. And on vocals isRon Davis. Don't miss Hammond B-3 wizard Eddie Baccus Sr. Quartet live atNighttown.

The development of a true jazz singer is a long-range

evolving classic singer. The development of a true jazz singer is a long-rangeprospect, laden with learning experiences that forge the voice into a trueinstrument, rich with passion, deeply invested in living through life’s joys and perils;such is the journey of Vanessa Rubin, jazz singer extraordinaire. Capable ofemploying the gamut of emotions, the mature Ms. Rubin can range from whisper toshout in the blink of an eye; from honey-laden ballads purring like a kitten, to uptempo swinging and scatting like a fluent saxophone, she delivers the goods.

One of the surest tests of a jazz singer is her acceptance by skilled players; therelationship between instrumentalist and vocalist is so often fraught with distrust. Vanessa Rubin has never experienced such travails. From the time she joined theNew York jazz community in the early 80s, under the guidance of suchgrandmasters as Barry Harris and Frank Foster, Rubin’s acceptance has beenuniversal. Instrumentalists have always been impressed by her way around a song, her willingness to flow with their muse, and her innate ability to swing that music.

The list of great musicians who have graced her recordings and bandstands is quiteimpressive: Monty Alexander, Cecil Bridgewater, Kenny Burrell, Frank Foster, BillyHiggins, Etta Jones, Lewis Nash, Houston Person, Patience Higgins, Don Braden,Toots Thielemans, Steve Turre, Cedar Walton, Grover Washington, Jr., and JamesWilliams are just a few of the masters who’ve lent their skills to support Ms. Rubin’sartistry. More recently she has completed auspicious global tours with HerbieHancock, the Woody Herman Orchestra, and the Jazz Crusaders.

Don BradenDon Braden is a musician of the highest caliber. For many years he has toured theworld leading his own ensembles, as a special guest, and as a sideman with greatssuch as Betty Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Freddie Hubbard, Tony Williams, RoyHaynes, and many others. He has composed music for everything from duo to fullsymphonic orchestra, in many styles, for recordings, film and television, andworked several years as composer for Bill Cosby. He is also a world renownededucator, having spent nearly two decades giving master classes at countlessschools and universities, and running first class educational programs such as theLitchfield Jazz Camp and Wachovia Jazz For Teens.

Don is an imaginative, technically excellent, soulful saxophonist, and his harmonicand rhythmic sophistication give him a unique approach to improvising as well ascomposing and arranging. Most important of all: he has a beautiful sound, and heswings! All this combines with his joyous yet disciplined personality to make himone of the most important musicians working today.
