Jose James$25.00 Wednesday 9/21 7:00 pm Buy Tickets

Cutting edge Vocalist and Blue Note Recording Artist with his NYC Group live on stageat Nighttown. Presented in Co-Operation with Tri-C JazzFest.

Singer-songwriter Jose James has always been of the quest for new musical horizons;constantly evolving and blurring the lines between genres in the process. While keepinghis trademark soulful baritone at the forefront, Jose weaves elements of indie rock, folk, funk, blues, hip hop and R&B into an experience journeying from desire to introspectionand spiritual epiphany.

Since the beginning, Minneapolis native José James has always drawn from disparatemusical influences. “Growing up, it seemed like there was a new groundbreaking albumcoming out every month. It was such an exciting time to be a fan of music. I can rememberwaiting for 10,000 Maniacs or Ice Cube to come out with a new album. That really stokedmy creativity.”

José set his sights on New York City – the ultimate metropolitan utopia where iron sharpensiron in various disciplines – and entered the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music inNew York City. Conspiring with classmates and flourishing under the tutelage of jazzluminaries, he found himself in a rich fabric of diverse musical contemporaries. Heremembers, “I just started putting all this stuff together. For me, it was never about whetherit was jazz or hip-hop. It was all about creative people who just had different sounds.”

An EP of José’s first recordings ended up in the hands of influential BBC Radio disc jockeyGilles Peterson. Thoroughly impressed, Peterson enlisted José to join the roster of his labelBrownswood Recordings and released his 2008 debut The Dreamer – a captivating mixtureof jazz tradition and modern flair – and 2010’s forward-thinking opus Blackmagic – a boldforay beyond tradition, synthesizing his jazz sensibilities with an ardent hip-hop moxie atthe hands of beatsmiths like the esteemed Flying Lotus. Blackmagic successfullybroadened his reach beyond jazz, garnering high praise from respected media outletstraditionally reserved for hip-hop and soul such as Okayplayer and Wax Poetics.

After extensive touring and experimentation with new ideas, James joined the Blue Noteroster in 2013 when he released his breakout album No Beginning No End to wide acclaim.

roster in 2013 when he released his breakout album No Beginning No End to wide acclaim. With its irrepressible lead single “Trouble,” the album release found José making nationalTV appearances on Conan, Late Show With David Letterman, and Tonight Show With JayLeno.

The New York Times praised his “cool and confident” album, adding that it “sounds like theresult of the black-pop continuum, jazz and soul and hip-hop and R&B, slow-cooked formore than 50 years.” NPR Music raved that “James makes utterly contemporary music,”noting that he “skirts categories with ease, fitting in with current R&B innovators like FrankOcean or Miguel, yet maintaining a strong awareness of a lineage that stretches from RayCharles to Marvin Gaye to Lou Rawls to Maxwell.”

José’s new album Yesterday I Had The Blues: The Music of Billie Holiday is a tribute to thelegendary singer in honor of Holiday’s 100th birthday. James celebrates the woman herefers to as his “musical mother” with this stunning set of 9 songs written or popularized byHoliday.

Monika Herzig's Whole World In Her Hands Sextet$20.00 Sunday 9/25 7:00 pm Buy Tickets

Powerful International All Women Sextet lead by Master Pianist and Professor of Musicat Indiana University, Monika Herzig.

Featuring: Monika Herzig-piano & leader, Leni Stern-guitar, Jamie Baum-flute, ReutRegev-trombone, Jennifer Vincent-bass, & Arianna Fanning-drums.

In the beginning, there were “The Chicks!” I encouraged Monika Herzig to pursue her loveof Chick Corea’s music and dared to mention the play on words with his name. Her projectis anything but tongue-in-cheek. She has assembled some seriously accomplishedmusicians, all of whom happen to be women. Not only can we be excited about the musicthey play, we can be thrilled about the important example they represent of high achievingwomen. Women are not the only ones that can feel lucky about what “The Whole World InHer Hands” has brought us. We all can. – Grammy Winning Bassist, John Clayton

Her vision clearly in place with a brilliantly reharmonized, reimagined and rearrangedversion of the traditional spiritual, “He’s Got The Whole World In His Hands,” Herzigcollaborated with manager/producer Suzi Reynolds to make some history and a stronginternational statement with this recording. They assembled an international array ofbandleaders from Israel, Cuba, Germany, India, NYC, Australia and Malaysia. This is avariation on the theme most would recognize as being how great jazz records have beenmade – independent, creative artists meet and discover their alchemy as a group, andfearlessly dive into new material. In the case of Monika Herzig’s new release, however, onevariation makes the recording sessions particularly notable – every musician on this datehappened to be female.

Beyond this historic fact is the music itself and the cohesion of the ensemble playing it,impressive on any level. Yet each of the members of Herzig’s taut ensemble are eminentmusicians and leaders in their own right, all women who have toured, recorded tointernational acclaim. Their talents, especially those of their leader, are on full display asinstrumentalists, collaborators and composers here. In this album titled The Whole World inHer Hands, each player finds the world in the instrument at her fingertips.

It’s not surprising that great talent is at the center of Herzig’s work. In this stunning andcontemporary project, Monika showcases her artistry and those of top jazz women workingtoday. Her intelligence and depth are audible in these songs, from originals to uniquearrangements of current hits. Bringing the likes of guitarist Leni Stern (Germany/NYC),percussionist Mayra Casales (Cuba), flutist/saxophonist Jane Bunnett (Canada), drummerArianna Fanning (Indian-American), bassist Jennifer Vincent (USA), trombonist Reut Regev(Israel), flutist Jamie Baum (USA/NYC), alto saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin (USA/NYC)) andbassist Linda Oh (Malaysia/Australia) together to play this panoply of music has created awhole that is truly greater than the sum of its impressive parts. Herzig says of the record,“I’m really excited about how this project came together and what all of these women havebeen able to accomplish. My goal and hope is to offer this work as model for young womencontemplating a career in music by seeing and hearing what these women from all overthe world have managed to accomplish, despite many difficulties.”

Billy Strayhorn

If you are familiar with the jazz composition, "Take the A Train," then you know something aboutnot only Duke Ellington, but also Billy "Sweet Pea" Strayhorn, its composer. Strayhorn joinedEllington's band in 1939, at the age of twenty four. Ellington liked what he saw in Billy and tookthis shy, talented pianist under his wings. Strayhorn became essential to the Duke Ellington Band;arranging, composing, sitting-in at the piano. Billy made a rapid and almost complete assimilationof Ellington's style and technique. It was difficult to discern where one's style ended and theother's began.

Some of Strayhorn's famous compositions are: Chelsea Bridge, Day Dream, Johnny Come Lately,Rain Check, Clementine, and Lotus Blossom.

The Moutin Factory Quintet, created in 2013 by the twins of jazz Francois Moutin and Louis Moutin, has evolved in 2015 when a historic partner of the Moutin brothers joined the group: theextraordinarily powerful and inspired pianist Jean Michel Pilc.

This renewal of the team has enriched the sound and the musicality of the quintet, enhancinglyricism and inventiveness. Between the personalities of saxophonist Christophe Monniot, acrobatof the poetry, of guitarist Manu Codjia, alchemist of the sensuality, and of this uniquely creativepiano-bass-drums trio, the chemistry is breathtaking. It blossoms on landscapes of subtle beauties, tells stories conveying poetry, love and the trance of dance.

“DEEP”, their new album, is a must. It unveils the compositions imagined by Francois Moutin andLouis Moutin, inspired by the sound of this new group. Their melodies and rhythms generouslycarry us in a world of deep emotions and lead us into sharing their jubilation of being fully alive.

Dominick Farinacci Quintet$30.00 Friday 10/21 8:30 pm Buy Tickets

Rising Trumpet Star & his NYC Quintet play Music from his Brand New CD "ShortStories" on Mack Avenue Records, Live at Nighttown!

Dominick Farinacci is set to release his Mack Avenue Records debut, Short Stories--acompelling suite of music with a repertoire that spans genres and generations united bythe trumpeter/composer's soulful conception. Bringing together songs from Tom Waits,Horace Silver, Dianne Reeves and the Gipsy Kings as well as original compositions,Farinacci has managed to create his own musical universe, aided by musicians of thehighest caliber. All of the songs have a narrative that any listener can relate to.

Farinacci had already achieved enough stature by his mid-teens that Wynton Marsalisoffered to help him set his sights on coming to New York, and by 2001, Farinacci was one ofonly four trumpeters in the world to be selected as the inaugural students in The JuilliardSchool's first jazz curriculum. During his school years and afterwards, Farinacciimmediately distinguished himself as a soloist/bandleader/composer with a vision.

Soon thereafter, Farinacci was named the first Global Ambassador for Jazz at LincolnCenter and traveled to Qatar where his world expanded beyond his wildest dreams.Throughout the two years that Farinacci spent there, he broadened his activities to includedozens of different projects, where the goal was, through his music and outreach activities,to unite communities and overcome barriers of every sort.

Life itself has many different sorts of mentorship built into it. A life in the arts can't existwithout these kinds of relationships, and Short Stories is the fruit of the coming together oftwo kindred spirits, Farinacci and LiPuma, from the same home town (Cleveland, Ohio),separated by just under half a century in age. What unites them is a clear, moern aestheticvision that combines the highest musical standards with a desire to be agents of change.

LiPuma's credits as a producer are far too numerous to list here; suffice it to say he hasplayed an essential role in the sound of the last 50 years, with 35 albums certified gold orplatinum, four GRAMMY® Award wins and 33 nominations. If you have heard Sir PaulMcCartney, Barbra Streisand, Miles Davis, George Benson, Natalie Cole, Dave Mason, DianaKrall and Dr. John--you have heard Mr. LiPuma's work.

Amazingly, Farinacci found time during his Middle East years to also play an integral role inthe conception and build out of Cuyahoga Community College's Tommy LiPuma Center forCreative Arts.

There are so many superlatives thrown around these days that they seem to have lost theireffect; but as this unique and deeply grounded album sinks into your consciousness, youwill undoubtedly come to the conclusion that Dominick Farinacci is not only one of the trulyoutstanding musicians of his generation, but also that what is behind the music is nothingshort of miraculous. In Farinacci's own words: "While Short Stories is the title of thisparticular recording, it has come to represent a culmination of things I'm most passionateabout - performance, education, music & wellness and community-based culturalcollaborations - unfolding in the music and touring around the world."

Morgan Mecaskey, Gretchen Pleuss, Hallie Sinclair, HaleyMargaret$10.00 Saturday 10/22 8:30 pm Buy Tickets

Emerging Singer/Songwriters from the North Coast light up the Nighttown Stage! Theart of song: four songwriters from northeast Ohio.

Hallie Sinclair has been playing piano since the age of four. She was taken to her first film, andimmediately upon arriving at home began to repeat the score on her family’s piano. She beganformal lessons shortly thereafter at a local teacher’s urging. She later graduated with a Bachelorsof Arts degree in Piano Performance, where she also continued her studies and participation inorchestras, chamber groups and collaborative studies in violin as well as piano.

Hallie had her debut as a singer songwriter at Nighttown at the age of nineteen, with members ofthe Cleveland Jazz Project. Since then she has continued to write and perform her owncompositions in various venues in and around the Cleveland area, as well as Toronto. Hallie livedin Toronto for the last three years where she collaborated with her main band writing all originalcompositions as the lead singer, lyricist and keyboardist.

She is now reentering the Cleveland scene, working towards mastering a selection of classicalpieces and her own creative endeavors.

Haley Margaret Schaffer is a singer-songwriter/barista from the tiny farming village ofMonreoville, OH.

Although she has been singing and performing for the majority of her life, her professional careerin music took off when she helped form the group, The Womack Family Band (later shortened toThe Womacks in 2013) in 2009 with Noah Heyman, Tony Schaffer, and Cory Webb.

While with the Womacks, she had the opportunity of sharing music and many special momentswith folks all along the East Coast. Together they recorded four studio albums as well as one livealbum, hosted a music festival, and played countless shows.

Gretchen Pleuss - "As with some of her proudly stated musical heroes, which include Nick Drake,Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, and Ani Difranco, Gretchen Pleuss keeps the music above the standard,three-chord, coffee-house troubadour sound with some cool chord progressions (a la Mitchell) andgrooves underneath layered vocal harmonies. Pleuss also trusts her lilting melodies enough to useher quiet, emotive alto to sell her lyrics (i.e. there's not a log of manic melisma trying to tear youreardrums off)." - Malcolm X Abram

Morgan Mecaskey is an American musician, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist living inCleveland, Ohio. The former front of acclaimed local indie/folk band Tinamou, Mecaskey made hersolo debut in 2012 with the EP, "Righteous Kind". "Righteous Kind" is a heart and head experiencefor the listener: earnest lyrics delve into metaphysical questions while vivid soundscapes, whimsical motifs, and fat beats build the bold and beguiling album.

Mecaskey has been likened to artist Jeff Buckley in the way she composes and coveys her music. An apt comparison, Mecaskey's forceful, assured presence, deliberate arrangements, and confidenthandling of the guitar create an unorthodox, ethereal, visceral musical experience.

"Lover Less Wild", Mecaskey's most recent recording, commences with the shimmering, passionate anthem "White Horse", wherein Mecaskey croons, "Sometimes, I don't feel like who Ireally am" over and over. It’s a solid anthem that sets the tone for the EP.

Both "Lover Less Wild" and "Righteous Kind" were recorded and engineered by Dave Douglas atDanger House (Cleveland, OH).
