World Class NYC Guitarist and High Note Recording Artist leads Quartet atNighttown!

Featuring: Russell Malone-guitar, Dreen Ivey-piano, Glenn Holmes-acoustic bass,& Reggie Jackson-drums.

Malone first began playing guitar around age four on a toy instrument, quicklygraduating to the real thing. Largely self-taught, he initially drew inspirationlistening to the recordings of gospel and blues artists including the DixieHummingbirds and B.B. King. However, after seeing George Benson perform withBenny Goodman on a television show, Malone was hooked on jazz and beganintently studying albums by legendary guitarists like Charlie Christian and WesMontgomery.

By his twenties, Malone was an accomplished performer, and in 1988 joinedorganist Jimmy Smith's band. Soon after, he also became a member of HarryConnick, Jr.'s big band, appearing on Connick's 1991 effort, Blue Light, Red Light. With his growing reputation as a sideman, Malone next caught the attention ofpianist/vocalist Diana Krall, with whom he would work throughout much of the '90sand 2000s. Also during this period, Malone appeared with a bevy of name artistsincluding Branford Marsalis, Benny Green, Terell Stafford, Ray Brown, and others.

As a solo artist, Malone made his debut with 1992's Russell Malone, followed a yearlater by Black Butterfly. In 1999, he released Sweet Georgia Peach, which featureda guest appearance from pianist Kenny Barron. Malone kicked off the 2000s withseveral albums on Verve, including 2000's Look Who's Here and 2001's orchestraljazz-themed Heartstrings. He then moved to Maxjazz for 2004's Playground, featuring a guest appearance from saxophonist Gary Bartz, followed by 2010'sTriple Play.

Over the next several years, Malone appeared on albums by Wynton Marsalis,Christian McBride, and Ron Carter, as well as Krall bandmate bassist Ben Wolfe. In2015, he returned to solo work with the eclectic small-group album Love LooksGood on You, followed in 2016 by "All About Melody", both on HighNote.

On "All About Melody", Malone homed in on strong melodies. "I prefer to play songsthat stick in my head, and in the listener's head" paired with harmonic schemes thatmight prompt imaginative improvisations. And indeed, each of the pieces Maloneincluded on this session meets the bill. And they have one additional virtue: theyare played by Russell's working band of Rick Germanson, Luke Sellick and WillieJones III. Together they are able to selflessly convey the essence of these melodiesand prove, to paraphrase Beethoven, "what comes from the heart, goes to theheart."

Jose James$25.00 Wednesday 9/21 7:00 pm Buy Tickets

Cutting edge Vocalist and Blue Note Recording Artist with his NYC Group live onstage at Nighttown. Presented in Co-Operation with Tri-C JazzFest.

Singer-songwriter Jose James has always been of the quest for new musicalhorizons; constantly evolving and blurring the lines between genres in the process. While keeping his trademark soulful baritone at the forefront, Jose weaveselements of indie rock, folk, funk, blues, hip hop and R&B into an experiencejourneying from desire to introspection and spiritual epiphany.

Since the beginning, Minneapolis native José James has always drawn fromdisparate musical influences. “Growing up, it seemed like there was a newgroundbreaking album coming out every month. It was such an exciting time to bea fan of music. I can remember waiting for 10,000 Maniacs or Ice Cube to come outwith a new album. That really stoked my creativity.”

José set his sights on New York City – the ultimate metropolitan utopia where ironsharpens iron in various disciplines – and entered the New School for Jazz andContemporary Music in New York City. Conspiring with classmates and flourishingunder the tutelage of jazz luminaries, he found himself in a rich fabric of diversemusical contemporaries. He remembers, “I just started putting all this stufftogether. For me, it was never about whether it was jazz or hip-hop. It was all aboutcreative people who just had different sounds.”

An EP of José’s first recordings ended up in the hands of influential BBC Radio discjockey Gilles Peterson. Thoroughly impressed, Peterson enlisted José to join theroster of his label Brownswood Recordings and released his 2008 debut TheDreamer – a captivating mixture of jazz tradition and modern flair – and 2010’sforward-thinking opus Blackmagic – a bold foray beyond tradition, synthesizing hisjazz sensibilities with an ardent hip-hop moxie at the hands of beatsmiths like theesteemed Flying Lotus. Blackmagic successfully broadened his reach beyond jazz, garnering high praise from respected media outlets traditionally reserved for hip-hop and soul such as Okayplayer and Wax Poetics.

After extensive touring and experimentation with new ideas, James joined the BlueNote roster in 2013 when he released his breakout album No Beginning No End towide acclaim. With its irrepressible lead single “Trouble,” the album release foundJosé making national TV appearances on Conan, Late Show With David Letterman, and Tonight Show With Jay Leno.

The New York Times praised his “cool and confident” album, adding that it “soundslike the result of the black-pop continuum, jazz and soul and hip-hop and R&B, slow-cooked for more than 50 years.” NPR Music raved that “James makes utterlycontemporary music,” noting that he “skirts categories with ease, fitting in withcurrent R&B innovators like Frank Ocean or Miguel, yet maintaining a strongawareness of a lineage that stretches from Ray Charles to Marvin Gaye to LouRawls to Maxwell.”

José’s new album Yesterday I Had The Blues: The Music of Billie Holiday is a tributeto the legendary singer in honor of Holiday’s 100th birthday. James celebrates thewoman he refers to as his “musical mother” with this stunning set of 9 songs writtenor popularized by Holiday.

Monika Herzig's Whole World In Her Hands Sextet$20.00 Sunday 9/25 7:00 pm Buy Tickets

Powerful International All Women Sextet lead by Master Pianist and Professorof Music at Indiana University, Monika Herzig.

Featuring: Monika Herzig-piano & leader, Leni Stern-guitar, Jamie Baum-flute,Reut Regev-trombone, Jennifer Vincent-bass, & Arianna Fanning-drums.

In the beginning, there were “The Chicks!” I encouraged Monika Herzig to pursueher love of Chick Corea’s music and dared to mention the play on words with hisname. Her project is anything but tongue-in-cheek. She has assembled someseriously accomplished musicians, all of whom happen to be women. Not only canwe be excited about the music they play, we can be thrilled about the importantexample they represent of high achieving women. Women are not the only onesthat can feel lucky about what “The Whole World In Her Hands” has brought us. Weall can. – Grammy Winning Bassist, John Clayton

Her vision clearly in place with a brilliantly reharmonized, reimagined andrearranged version of the traditional spiritual, “He’s Got The Whole World In HisHands,” Herzig collaborated with manager/producer Suzi Reynolds to make somehistory and a strong international statement with this recording. They assembled aninternational array of bandleaders from Israel, Cuba, Germany, India, NYC,Australia and Malaysia. This is a variation on the theme most would recognize asbeing how great jazz records have been made – independent, creative artists meetand discover their alchemy as a group, and fearlessly dive into new material. In thecase of Monika Herzig’s new release, however, one variation makes the recordingsessions particularly notable – every musician on this date happened to be female.

Beyond this historic fact is the music itself and the cohesion of the ensembleplaying it, impressive on any level. Yet each of the members of Herzig’s tautensemble are eminent musicians and leaders in their own right, all women whohave toured, recorded to international acclaim. Their talents, especially those oftheir leader, are on full display as instrumentalists, collaborators and composershere. In this album titled The Whole World in Her Hands, each player finds the worldin the instrument at her fingertips.

It’s not surprising that great talent is at the center of Herzig’s work. In this stunningand contemporary project, Monika showcases her artistry and those of top jazzwomen working today. Her intelligence and depth are audible in these songs, fromoriginals to unique arrangements of current hits. Bringing the likes of guitarist LeniStern (Germany/NYC), percussionist Mayra Casales (Cuba), flutist/saxophonist JaneBunnett (Canada), drummer Arianna Fanning (Indian-American), bassist JenniferVincent (USA), trombonist Reut Regev (Israel), flutist Jamie Baum (USA/NYC), altosaxophonist Lakecia Benjamin (USA/NYC)) and bassist Linda Oh (Malaysia/Australia)together to play this panoply of music has created a whole that is truly greater thanthe sum of its impressive parts. Herzig says of the record, “I’m really excited abouthow this project came together and what all of these women have been able toaccomplish. My goal and hope is to offer this work as model for young womencontemplating a career in music by seeing and hearing what these women from allover the world have managed to accomplish, despite many difficulties.”

Ellington liked what hesaw in Billy and took this shy, talented pianist under his wings. Strayhorn becameessential to the Duke Ellington Band; arranging, composing, sitting-in at the piano. Billymade a rapid and almost complete assimilation of Ellington's style and technique. It wasdifficult to discern where one's style ended and the other's began.

For the last ten years, master drummer Louis Moutin and bass monster FrancoisMoutin have been co-leading the Moutin Reunion Quartet, relentlessly touring bothAmerica and Europe, performing their own original compositions with astoundingpartners Jean-Michel Pilc on piano and Rick Margitza on tenor sax. They havereleased six albums, each of them generating lots of laudatory press and extensiveairplay.

The Moutin Factory Quintet is co-lead by twin brothers Francois Moutin on acousticbass and Louis Moutin on drums. Both in their forties, they enjoy a chemistry thatonly twin brothers can know.

The Moutin Factory Quintet, created in 2013 by the twins of jazz Francois Moutin and LouisMoutin, has evolved in 2015 when a historic partner of the Moutin brothers joined thegroup: the extraordinarily powerful and inspired pianist Jean Michel Pilc.

This renewal of the team has enriched the sound and the musicality of the quintet, enhancing lyricism and inventiveness. Between the personalities of saxophonistChristophe Monniot, acrobat of the poetry, of guitarist Manu Codjia, alchemist of thesensuality, and of this uniquely creative piano-bass-drums trio, the chemistry isbreathtaking. It blossoms on landscapes of subtle beauties, tells stories conveying poetry, love and the trance of dance.

“DEEP”, their new album, is a must. It unveils the compositions imagined by FrancoisMoutin and Louis Moutin, inspired by the sound of this new group. Their melodies andrhythms generously carry us in a world of deep emotions and lead us into sharing theirjubilation of being fully alive.

Dominick Farinacci Quintet$30.00 Friday 10/21 8:30 pm Buy Tickets

Rising Trumpet Star & his NYC Quintet play Music from his Brand New CD "ShortStories" on Mack Avenue Records, Live at Nighttown!

Dominick Farinacci is set to release his Mack Avenue Records debut, Short Stories--a compelling suite of music with a repertoire that spans genres and generationsunited by the trumpeter/composer's soulful conception. Bringing together songsfrom Tom Waits, Horace Silver, Dianne Reeves and the Gipsy Kings as well asoriginal compositions, Farinacci has managed to create his own musical universe, aided by musicians of the highest caliber. All of the songs have a narrative that anylistener can relate to.

Farinacci had already achieved enough stature by his mid-teens that WyntonMarsalis offered to help him set his sights on coming to New York, and by 2001,Farinacci was one of only four trumpeters in the world to be selected as theinaugural students in The Juilliard School's first jazz curriculum. During his schoolyears and afterwards, Farinacci immediately distinguished himself as asoloist/bandleader/composer with a vision.

Soon thereafter, Farinacci was named the first Global Ambassador for Jazz atLincoln Center and traveled to Qatar where his world expanded beyond his wildestdreams. Throughout the two years that Farinacci spent there, he broadened hisactivities to include dozens of different projects, where the goal was, through hismusic and outreach activities, to unite communities and overcome barriers ofevery sort.

Life itself has many different sorts of mentorship built into it. A life in the arts can'texist without these kinds of relationships, and Short Stories is the fruit of the comingtogether of two kindred spirits, Farinacci and LiPuma, from the same home town(Cleveland, Ohio), separated by just under half a century in age. What unites themis a clear, moern aesthetic vision that combines the highest musical standards witha desire to be agents of change.

LiPuma's credits as a producer are far too numerous to list here; suffice it to say hehas played an essential role in the sound of the last 50 years, with 35 albumscertified gold or platinum, four GRAMMY® Award wins and 33 nominations. If you

certified gold or platinum, four GRAMMY® Award wins and 33 nominations. If youhave heard Sir Paul McCartney, Barbra Streisand, Miles Davis, George Benson,Natalie Cole, Dave Mason, Diana Krall and Dr. John--you have heard Mr. LiPuma'swork.

Amazingly, Farinacci found time during his Middle East years to also play anintegral role in the conception and build out of Cuyahoga Community College'sTommy LiPuma Center for Creative Arts.

There are so many superlatives thrown around these days that they seem to havelost their effect; but as this unique and deeply grounded album sinks into yourconsciousness, you will undoubtedly come to the conclusion that DominickFarinacci is not only one of the truly outstanding musicians of his generation, butalso that what is behind the music is nothing short of miraculous. In Farinacci's ownwords: "While Short Stories is the title of this particular recording, it has come torepresent a culmination of things I'm most passionate about - performance, education, music & wellness and community-based cultural collaborations -unfolding in the music and touring around the world."

Since then she has continued to write and performher own compositions in various venues in and around the Cleveland area, as well asToronto. Hallie lived in Toronto for the last three years where she collaborated with hermain band writing all original compositions as the lead singer, lyricist and keyboardist.

She is now reentering the Cleveland scene, working towards mastering a selection ofclassical pieces and her own creative endeavors.

Haley Margaret Schaffer is a singer-songwriter/barista from the tiny farming village ofMonreoville, OH.

Although she has been singing and performing for the majority of her life, her professionalcareer in music took off when she helped form the group, The Womack Family Band (latershortened to The Womacks in 2013) in 2009 with Noah Heyman, Tony Schaffer, and CoryWebb.

While with the Womacks, she had the opportunity of sharing music and many specialmoments with folks all along the East Coast. Together they recorded four studio albums aswell as one live album, hosted a music festival, and played countless shows.

Gretchen Pleuss - "As with some of her proudly stated musical heroes, which includeNick Drake, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, and Ani Difranco, Gretchen Pleuss keeps the musicabove the standard, three-chord, coffee-house troubadour sound with some cool chordprogressions (a la Mitchell) and grooves underneath layered vocal harmonies. Pleuss alsotrusts her lilting melodies enough to use her quiet, emotive alto to sell her lyrics (i.e.there's not a log of manic melisma trying to tear your eardrums off)." - Malcolm X Abram

Morgan Mecaskey is an American musician, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalistliving in Cleveland, Ohio. The former front of acclaimed local indie/folk band Tinamou,Mecaskey made her solo debut in 2012 with the EP, "Righteous Kind". "Righteous Kind" isa heart and head experience for the listener: earnest lyrics delve into metaphysical

a heart and head experience for the listener: earnest lyrics delve into metaphysicalquestions while vivid soundscapes, whimsical motifs, and fat beats build the bold andbeguiling album.

Mecaskey has been likened to artist Jeff Buckley in the way she composes and coveys hermusic. An apt comparison, Mecaskey's forceful, assured presence, deliberatearrangements, and confident handling of the guitar create an unorthodox, ethereal, visceral musical experience.

"Lover Less Wild", Mecaskey's most recent recording, commences with the shimmering, passionate anthem "White Horse", wherein Mecaskey croons, "Sometimes, I don't feel likewho I really am" over and over. It’s a solid anthem that sets the tone for the EP.

Both "Lover Less Wild" and "Righteous Kind" were recorded and engineered by DaveDouglas at Danger House (Cleveland, OH).
