If you’ve ever wanted a career in music but have been waiting for the right moment, this is it. It’s time to put on your boots, tune your guitar, and warm up your vocals, because the Rockin’ River Talent Search is on the hunt for its next big star.

The contest is open to any age, ability or genre (excluding rap or hip hop). There are eight different venues across the province currently conducting competitions, with Finnegan’s Pub in Abbotsford selected by Rockin’  River  as the host venue for the Lower Mainland.

Every Friday at 6 p.m.  from May 6 to June 10,  Finnegan’s will host qualification

Finnegan’s champion will go on to compete on  Thursday, July 28  in Merritt at the Rockin’  River  provincial finals.  The  grand prize winner will receive a single song-recording session at Heart line Music Studio in Abbotsford with producer Tom McKillip, a gift pack from all the festival sponsors, and the opportunity to open for country music singer Sam Hunt at this year’s Rockin’ River Fest.

“Sam Hunt is currently one of the biggest country stars in the world,” says Esposito. “In 2015, he won the American Music Award for best new artist of the year and was nominated for Best Male Artist. Plus, having the opportunity to open for him in front

rounds.  Each week the judges will select two finalists to compete at the finale on Friday, June 17, and subsequently name the Finnegan’s venue champion. The judges will base their scores on vocal ability, song choice, stage presence and rapport with the audience.

“Although the audience will not be casting a vote, by cheering loud for their favourite artist, they can definitely influence our judges,” says Paul Esposito Jr., Finnegan’s Pub Talent Search organizer. “Spectators will be truly amazed by the talented artists competing in the contest.”

The winning musician selected as the

of thousands of fans on the big outdoors stage at Rockin’ River Merritt does not get any better.”

For anyone who is considering trying out but feels nervous to do so, Esposito’s advice is simple: Don’t be – just have fun.

“Canadian superstars such as Michelle Wright, Paul Brandt, George Canyon and Aaron Pritchett all came through similar contests and used their wins to jumpstart their careers,” he says. “Who knows what this year’s contest will bring?”

The competition’s registration is currently open. For further details and rules, or to register, visit www.roadtoriverfest.com

Now is the bright time to go bold and playful with some the season’s most vibrant colours.

Just like the seasons, spring/summer fashion is a time for rejuvenation, a lifting of the spirits and a time to add in some fun.

Stand out in vivid shades such as tomato, periwinkle, buttercup, indigo, eggplant, aquamarine and violet.

The key is to choose one piece to make a statement. This could be a sleek fitted dress, a brilliant top paired with a neutral skirt or pant, or a stand-out jacket.

Let the colour speak for itself, and keep your accessories to a minimum to keep from looking overdone.

HOMELIFEHow to determine

if downsizing is for youmarket. If you think the current market won’t get you the price you are hoping for, delay your downsize until the market rebounds.

TAKE INVENTORYEmpty nesters often find that their homes are still filled with their children’s posses-sions, even long after those children have entered adulthood and left home. If the storage in your home is dominated by items that belong to your children, then downsizing might be right for you. Invite your children over to pick through any items still in your home. Once they have done so and taken what they want, you can host a yard sale, ultimately donating or discarding what you cannot sell. Once all of the items are gone, you may realize that moving into a smaller place is the financially prudent decision.

EXAMINE YOUR OWN ITEMS AS WELLYour children’s items are likely not the only items taking up space in your home. Take inventory of your own pos-sessions as well, making note of items you can live without and those you want to keep. If the list of items you

can live without is extensive, then you probably won’t have a problem moving into a smaller home. If you aren’t quite ready to say goodbye to many of your possessions, then you might benefit from staying put a little while longer.

CONSIDER YOUR LIFESTYLEIf you have already retired or are on the verge of retirement and plan to spend lots of time traveling, then downsizing to a smaller home may free up money you can spend on trips. And if you really do see yourself as a silver-haired jetsetter, then you likely won’t miss your current home because you won’t be home frequently enough to enjoy it. If travel is not high on your retirement to-do list but you have a hobby, such as crafting, restoring classic cars or woodworking, that you hope to turn into a second profession, then you might benefit from staying put and converting your existing space into a workshop.

Many retirees downsize their homes, but this decision requires careful con-sideration of a variety of factors.

As men and women retire or approach retirement age, many opt to downsize their homes. Such a decision can save older adults substantial amounts of money while also liberating them from the hassle of maintaining large homes they no longer need.

Downsizing to smaller homes or apart-ments is a significant step, one that homeowners should give ample con-sideration before making their final decisions. The following are a handful of tips to help homeowners determine if downsizing to smaller homes is the right move.

GET A GRIP ON THE REAL ESTATE MARKETDownsizing is not solely about money, but it’s important that homeowners con-sider the real estate market before put-ting their homes up for sale. Speak with a local realtor or your financial advisor about the current state of your real estate market. Downsizing can help homeown-ers save money on utilities, taxes and mortgage payments, but those savings may be negated if you sell your house in a buyer’s market instead of a seller’s

DIRECTIONS:In a deep frying pan, heat a tsp of olive oil over medium-high heat and add bacon. Cook until crispy, then remove to a bowl but reserve the fat in the frying pan.

Add the remaining olive oil. Add onion and pepper, and sauté for 3-4 minutes, until slightly softened. Season with salt, add mushrooms and garlic. Cook for a minute, stirring. Add back the bacon and spices, stir for 30 seconds. Add the tomatoes, stir and cover with a lid. Cook on medium-low heat for 10-12 minutes, giving it a stir a few times.

Using a spoon, make small wells in the tomato mix and crack an egg into each, letting the egg white spill over the edges. Sprinkle each egg yolk with a salt and pepper (and chili flakes for added spice), cover with lid and cook on medium-low heat until the egg whites firm up but the egg yolks remain gooey, about 5 minutes. You’re after a white translucent film over the egg yolks but only just. It’s very easy to overcook the eggs this way so it’s best to leave them slightly undercooked as they keep cooking while getting served.

Serve the eggs in the cooking dish sprinkled with some fresh parsley and cilantro.

I don’t own a tagine, so I adapted this traditional recipe

to work with my cast iron pan with a tight fitting lid.

INGREDIENTS:3 tbsp olive oil3-5 slices bacon, diced (I have also used

prosciutto, or a spicy sausage) 1 onion, chopped1 small red chilli, chopped1 medium red bell pepper, chopped1/2 tsp salt2 cloves garlic, chopped2-3 button mushrooms, sliced1/2 tsp ground cumin1/2 tsp paprika1/2 tsp ground coriander seed powder1/2 tsp dried oregano (fresh is also fine,

parsley could be used instead)1/2 tsp turmeric powder (optional)

(or 1 1/2 tsp of pre-mixed Moroccan spice mix)

MYTH #1: MENOPAUSE HAPPENS SUDDENLYWomen do not wake up one day and discover they have entered menopause. Menopause is characterized by a subtle fluctuation of hormones that will grad-ually lead to menopause. Unless meno-pause results from a hysterectomy pro-cedure or another medical intervention, it should happen slowly over the course of a few years. The period leading up to a last menstrual period is called peri-menopause.

MYTH #2:PERIMENOPAUSE ELIMINATES PREGNANCY RISKA woman is not totally protected from

At some point in a woman’s life she will enter into a period called menopause. Unlike what the name might suggest, menstruation does not “pause” upon entering menopause. Rather, it ceases to occur from this point on, ending the fertile, reproductive time for females.

Menopause typically begins around age 51. It also may be induced through med-ical intervention at an earlier age.

Women are encouraged to discuss menopause with their healthcare pro-viders so they can better understand their bodies. That’s especially important since certain myths about menopause still prevail.

an unplanned pregnancy until a year has passed since her most recent men-strual cycle. Even if periods are infre-quent or unreliable, it is recommended that women choose another effective method of birth control if they do not want another pregnancy.

MYTH #3:ALL HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPIES ARE THE SAMEIt is now believed that women who have had a hysterectomy can take estrogen alone, but those who still have a uter-us need progestogen added to protect against endometrial cancer. Doctors can customize hormone replacement thera-pies to reduce risks.

MYTH #4: HOT FLASHES ARE UNAVOIDABLEHormonal shifts trigger hot flashes in many menopausal women. However, hot flashes may vary in frequency and intensity depending on the individual.Generally, the first two or three years of menopause tend to be the worst for hot flashes. After those initial two or three years, hot flashes may lessen in inten-sity or become less frequent.

Menopause can be a confusing time for women, as it involves changes to the body women have not yet experienced. Women can combat that confusion by discussing their symptoms or concerns with their physicians.

4 myths associated with menopause
