“A highlight of the year was the [Peardonville Elementary] school Christmas concert. The kids would collect donations from the neighbours and then the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) would make a list of each child, along with their age. This would be sent to Woodward’s Department Store in Vancouver, which would send back suitable presents. The local Japanese farmers including the Haraga, Tanaka, Oka, and Yenemitsu families— we had a lot of Japanese-Canadian kids in school — always gave oranges, and other people gave candy. Vic Melander played Santa Claus. People came from miles around to see the concert.”

Celebrate the seasonNORTH POLE BC:All the traditional magic and charm of Christmas is coming to Tradex this holiday season, with North Pole B.C.’s ‘Festival of Christmas’ open weekends and select days until Dec. 24.

Enjoy a cozy nighttime atmosphere of holiday cheer that includes interactive scenes, roaming entertainers, and activities for all ages.

Creative director of North Pole B.C., Victoria Hardy says they are excited to offer families in the Fraser Valley a Christmas experience right in their own community, at just $12.50 per person, including tax.

“Children and their families have the opportunity to sing, play and interact directly with the Elves, Mrs. Claus, the Toy Inventor, the Snow Princess and others, and then watch these same characters present a mini-performance of their scenes” says Hardy. “Families can decorate a gingerbread cookie, make wrapping paper, and learn how to be an elf. Our scavenger hunt will keep the entire family busy searching for some hidden treasures around the North Pole,

or meet Santa as he roams about each hour.”

Now in their sixth year of operation, North Pole B.C. has moved indoors, allowing for a comfortable, dry environment and giving families in the Fraser Valley a chance to experience a great Christmas adventure locally.

FIRST NIGHT:Another festive celebration taking place at Tradex this holiday season is the first-ever “First Night” – a dry family event ending in fireworks, running from 5 p.m. until midnight on New Year’s Eve.

Tickets cost $10.71 per person, but once inside all the activities are free, including performances by some of the best Valley Voices alumni, dance lessons, mini golf, rock climbing, curling provided by the Optimist Club, rides provided by West Coast Amusements, scavenger hunts,

a number of different bouncy castles, mazes and sports challenges, as well as an area for younger children with magic shows and much more.

Manager of events and business development at Tradex, Bradley Styba says the night will be full of entertainment in a safe, dry, warm and alcohol-free environment.

“We also have some great prizes, including two tickets to any Canadian destination sponsored by WestJet, and if you pre-purchase your tickets you will also be entered into a draw that could see you and one guest at every public event at Tradex in 2015 with parking included,” says Styba.

There will be two countdowns to welcome in the New Year at First Night – one traditionally timed for midnight, and another at 9 p.m., for families with little children who want the experience but cannot stay up late.

Cold, blustery weather is waiting to rear its ugly head whether the public likes it or not. Winter weather may require revamping your normal health and beauty routine, as your skin and hair may need a bit more attention this time of year.

Chances are you may be doing one or more things wrong this winter, according to beauty experts. Learn the mistakes many people make and how to avoid them.

USING THE SAME FOUNDATIONIn addition to exploring a different colour palette, you may need to actually change the formulation of the products you use. Skin tends to dry out in the cold, necessitating a switch to a foundation that boasts moisturizing agents. People whose skin is normally oily may find com-bination skin products acceptable.

TAKING PROLONGED, HOT SHOWERSMany people enjoy lingering in a hot shower or bath during the cold-er months of the year. But too much hot water can compromise your skin’s ability to contain moisture, further complicating dryness that comes with the season.

COVERING DRY SKIN WITH MAKEUP Slathering on makeup to hide dry skin will only make it more no-ticeable. Instead, do some gentle exfoliation and moisturization to combat the problem. Gently rub a wet washcloth over dry areas to re-move flaky skin and prep your face for makeup application.

SKIPPING SUNSCREENThe sun still shines in the winter, and skin is still susceptible to dam-age. Make sun protection a year-round part of your beauty regimen. Use a moisturizer with SPF built in to make morning routines that much easier.

FORGETTING HANDS AND FEETSkin on hands and feet can dry out in win-ter air. Wear gloves to protect hands and thoroughly moisturize. Use a pumice stone to give feet an exfoliating treat and slather on the moisturizer. Pull on a pair of cotton socks and let that moisture penetrate feet for soft soles and toes.

Sear Roasted Pork Tenderloin with date and cilantro relishPROVIDED BY LEPP FARM MARKET

INGREDIENTS: Any spice rub you love. Cumin adapts well to this

Moroccan inspired dish. (I use House of Q house rub and mix in 1 tsp of cumin for each tbsp of rub)

3 tbsp olive oil, divided

1 pork tenderloin (about 1 1/2 lbs)

2/3 cup pitted Medjool dates, cut into small pieces

2 tbsp fresh orange juice

3 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro

plus leaves for serving

2-3 tbsp white wine, chicken broth or apple juice

Season Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

INSTRUCTIONS:1. Preheat oven to 425°. Dry the pork tenderloin with paper towel and

massage spice rub into the meat.

2. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat. Season pork with salt and pepper and cook, turning, until browned on all sides, 6–8 minutes. Transfer skillet to oven and cook until an in-stant-read thermometer inserted in thickest part registers 140°, 10–15 minutes. Transfer pork to a cutting board and let rest for 5 minutes before slicing; place skillet on burner over medium heat and add white wine and deglaze pan. Cook until liquid is syrupy and reduced by half.

3. Toss dates, orange juice, reduced pan drippings, 3 tbsp chopped ci-lantro, and remaining 2 tbsp oil in a small bowl; season with salt and pepper. Spoon relish over pork and top with cilantro leaves.

4. DO AHEAD: Relish (without pan drippings) can be made 4 hours ahead. Cover and chill. Add pan drippings just before serving.

MAKE EXERCISE DATES Establish a regular exercise date. Treat exercise as any other obligation on the calendar. Make it a necessity and not a luxury. Schedule time for workouts, even if it means removing something else from your agenda.

CHANGE YOUR SCHEDULEYou may need to alter your daily sched-ule to fit in exercise. Try getting up earlier and heading out prior to work or school.
