The MSA Museum Society invites you to take a tour of the 1920s Trethewey House Heritage Site.

Monday to Friday, between 1pm & 5pm.

Did you know that a baccyfl ap is a round container made specifi cally to store one’s pipe tobacco in? Strangely, the MSA Museum Society’s collection contains many tobacco related artifacts (after all, historically, tobacco was a big industry in the area) including a beautiful brown bakelite baccyfl ap - but not a single pipe to smoke all that ‘baccy in!

Celebrate cultural diversity Although the Abbotsford Multicultural Festival only happens once a year, it is a reminder that every day is an opportunity to acknowledge our neighbours with understanding and acceptance.

AbbyFest was started in 2008 with a simple objective – increase the public’s awareness of cultural diversity in the Fraser Valley through interaction and education.

Over the years, it has grown into a platform for informed dialogue on multiculturalism in the hopes of creating a stronger community and eliminate factors that contribute to exclusion and racism. Those goals start with individuals having access to experiences that reflect cultures from all corners of the globe.

On Saturday, Sept. 26 AbbyFest will begin with the Parade of Nations at 2 p.m., followed by the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) Fashion Show and re-imagined Global Village, martial arts demonstrations, belly dancing and music from Africa, South America, Asia and beyond. The festival ends at 8 p.m.,

international student body, and by working together we can promote inclusivity, inter-cultural understanding, and equal opportunities for all,” he says. “Celebrating our diversity is really celebrating our entire community and so much of the future success of our city will come from a vibrant university. UFV and AbbyFest are committed to education and the recognition and inclusion of our cultural identity.”

AbbyFest is a chance for families to explore their curiosity about Chinese clothing rituals, Latin American dancing, or African soul food, and leave the festival with a new appreciation, perspective and pride to live in community that celebrates multiculturalism.

and is a chance for families to celebrate Abbotsford’s diverse heritage with a full day of activities.

President-elect of the AbbyFest Multicultural Society, Vince Dimanno, estimates that nearly 30 per cent of the community lists their native tongue as one other than English or French.

“We are the home of the oldest Sikh Temple in North America, we have the third largest Filipino population in B.C, and the European influence is a huge part of our community history,” he says. “AbbyFest is the only event each year that focuses solely on bringing all of these groups together for a full day of celebration.”

This year, AbbyFest is partnering with UFV and moving to Abbotsford’s UFV campus from its previous location at the Ag-Rec Building.

Dimanno says the partnership is a natural fit and will help to highlight how UFV reflects the diversity of the community through their educational opportunities.

Go back to school in style with the latest looks that

capture the season’s hottest trends.

Leggings and tights are still on point and are

a great way to make the transition from hot

summer days to the cooler days ahead.

Pair with a mini dress, a lightweight knit

cardigan and booties, and you’re ready

to make a statement.

Pattern and colour are also strong this

season. A sleeveless top adorned with

chevron stripes – a combination of

neutral and hot-pink tones – can be

the focal point of an ensemble when

left on its own or topped with a cute

denim jacket.

Denim never goes out of style and is

a versatile and practical option in, say,

something like a little girl’s dress. With the

Amazing hairfor back to schoolBETTY DESMONE, CERTIFIED COSMETICIANSHOPPER’S DRUG MART, MT. LEHMAN CROSSING

Your hairstyle is an extension of who you are and tells the world your story. It can also influence the way you feel about yourself, and reflects your personality. The hairstyle you choose should match the shape of your face, suit your hair texture, and enhance your individuality.

Vamp up a short hairstyle with some highlights for the hottest look. And if you are blessed with thick hair that has a natural wave, choose a pixie for that epic new look! Medium cut styles give you the advantage of creative experimentation. The perfect medium length is often called the chop; a nice change when you are tired of long hair but not ready to commit to a shag or a bob.

The hot trend of the moment is the long bob, whether as a chin length bob or a shaggy, just above the shoulders bob. This style is low maintenance and works best on thinner to medium hair textures. If your hair is extra fine, ask for a graduated bob, stacked layers, shorter at the back and longer in the front, to give height to the crown. However, if you have a round face shape, the long bob is your better choice. Big beachy waves are also trending, and ponytails, but tied at the nape.

In true fashionista, your style would not be complete without a spectacular new colour. According to experts, marsala will be one of the hottest colours of the winter season. This is a robust and earthy wine red shade that can act as a bold statement or a complimentary colour tone for most browns and reds. Aubergine is another very popular and versatile shade, appearing on the violet spectrum of the wine reds, which look great on most skin tones. Merlot joins the favourites with its rich red colour and subtle hints of cherry and cocoa. It contains equal parts of violet and red, and is the perfect colour pairing for brown based reds as a deep lowlight.

Ombre remains one of the hottest haircolour trends of the season, not only

because of all the options, but because it is insanely low maintenance. You can go bold, soft, colourful or natural

with endless colour choices. Ombre haircolours are a great way to rock your look without sacrificing your style!

Look for the hottest hairstyle and cut this season to suit your lifestyle and personality.

After all, your hair is often considered your most feminine

feature and it deserves to be showcased!

Plan ahead for a smooth startParents have begun preparations to get their kids ready for Back to School. A little organizing and planning can make the transition a smooth one. Here are a few tips that may help you ease into September’s schedule:

Start to implement school-night bedtime gradually, perhaps two weeks prior to the big day. Plan a morning activity that will entice kids to rise early and gradually get back into the habit.

Stock the freezer with pre-made casseroles and soups to make hectic weekday dinners a breeze. Then it’s just a matter of thawing during the day and reheating at dinner time. Don’t foget the crock-pot, for family dinners that are ready when you are.

Prepare a spot at home for backpacks, lunch bags and all the clutter that comes with Back to School. Establish a routine of keeping belongings in a set space to make things easier to find, and harder to forget!

Arrange an area to be used for homework. It can be in a bedroom, the family room or right at the kitchen table, but should provide a quiet environment where your child can work free from interruption.

Post a calendar near the door and notate

activities well in advance. Have kids add homework due dates, library and gym days. Get in the habit of checking that everyone has everything they’ll need for the day before leaving the house.

Make a ‘snack box’ in your pantry cupboard filled with healthy snack options your kids can add to their lunchbox. Things like granola bars, fruit snacks, crackers, raisins, pretzels. Add another box in the fridge with things like yogurt tubes, cut veggies, fruit, cheese strings and juice boxes. Pre-packaging healthy snacks in single servings will teach kids about making healthy snacking choices, and will free up time in the mornings. It also gives kids opportunity to make their own decisions, and to feel more in control.

Getting prepared for back to school is something that all members of the family can help with. Have your kids share their ideas as well; they may have some great suggestions they’ve heard from their friends’ families. With so many different family situations and schedules, there’s no magic equation that works for all, but a little advance planning can help to lessen the stress!

Nut–free lunch bag solutionsMINI PIZZASWhether you make your own or use the frozen variety, mini-pizzas make an excellent sandwich alternative. To make your own, try a whole wheat pita or english muffin in lieu of crust, and top away. You might even get away with adding some veggies if you’re creative!

SOUPA thermos is definitely a worthwhile investment for those rushed mornings when you need something quick! Soup can be a great source of vegetables, but watch out for high sodium levels. Send along some breadsticks, crackers or croutons for a satisfying crunch!

PASTA SALADHow can you go wrong with pasta? Add chopped vegetables and a bit of tangy dressing for a healthy lunch! Try adding your favourite herbs, pickles, cheese cubes and/or meat, and you’ll have a multitude of flavour combinations. This type of salad also refrigerates well so you can make a big bowl on Sunday night in preparation of a busy week ahead.

CHEESE & CRACKERSNot only are they a winning combination for snacking, cheese and crackers can be a great luncheon possibility! Add some deli meat or a container of tuna or salmon. Kids will love ‘building’ their own stacked cracker sandwiches too!

BEAN SALADPacked with nutrients and rich in protein, bean salad is an excellent alternative for lunch. Add a side of fresh fruit and yogurt or cheese and you’ve got a full meal deal!

CHICKEN STRIPS OR NUGGETSWhether you use the pre-made/frozen variety or lower fat & sodium home-made options, if your kids like leftover chicken, these are sure to be a hit in the lunchbox. Add some ranch dressing and carrots for those who like to dip!

MUFFINS, SCONES OR BISCUITSBaked at home goodies can be made healthy for an excellent alternative to sandwiches. Try adding ham and cheese to baking powder biscuits for a savoury lunch. Most muffin recipes can be made ‘lower’ fat by replacing the butter component with applesauce, and you can increase the fiber by using whole wheat flour. Have a little fun in the kitchen finding your favourite combinations.

Sometimes even just changing the type of bread you use can make a boring lunchbox more enticing. Try whole wheat bagels, pita pockets, flatbreads or croissants once in awhile, just to add some variety. Tired of sandwiches altogether? Try a granola bar, yogurt and cut veggies; most kids will find this quite satisfying!

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain, resulting from inflammation and damage to the tough fibrous tissue which forms the arch of the foot. Patients may describe the sensation as a sharp or deep ache in the middle of the heel or along the arch that typically occurs during walking or standing. Often, pain occurs early in the morning when patients are taking their first few steps out of bed. As the foot naturally tightens at night, the fascia may gain new tears in the morning, initiating a painful cycle.

Improper footwear, strenuous activity, and obesity can bring on plantar fasciitis. Flat feet, high arches and poor shock absorption in shoes can also put excessive stress on the foot’s soft tissues. Plantar fasciitis is commonly seen in middle-aged patients.

Most patients with plantar fasciitis are

effectively treated with some simple measures. Common treatments include anti-inflammatory medications, ice applications, shoe inserts, stretching and exercises.

Surgical intervention has been the last resort for patients when other treatments of plantar fasciitis do not work. The problem is that the success rate of surgery is not high, and surgery has potentially complicating side-effects.

LATEST DEVELOPMENT:Shock wave therapy (SWT) has emerged as a possible treatment option for patients with chronic plantar fasciitis. SWT delivers focused shock waves to the body.

Shock wave therapy is thought to work by inducing microtrauma to the tissue that is affected by plantar fasciitis. This microtrauma initiates a healing response by the body. This healing response causes blood vessel formation and increased

delivery of nutrients to the affected area. The microtrauma is thought to stimulate a repair process and relieve the symptoms of plantar fasciitis.

Don’t miss out on this end-of-summer fruit and vegetable extrav-aganza as sadly, our peak season is already slow-ly starting to wind down.

2014

Farmer Rob has been privileged to befriend feisty 91-year-old Ruth, an Osoyoos orchardist who is a wealth of knowledge of local history and healthy tree fruit practices. Re-cently she told him that “the best fertilizer is a farmer’s footsteps” as she relayed that she and her late husband were acquainted with each tree in their orchard, could re-spond to tree health issues quickly, and determine the optimum time to harvest. This resonated with Rob, as nightly corn field checks and Osoyoos orchard walk-arounds have been standard practice for him for years. This weekend help us celebrate the bounty of all those footsteps at “From the Farmer’s Field”, highlighting our locally grown corn and sun-sweetened strawber-ries, as well as juicy peaches from

1 Avocado, diced If you’re going to enjoy leftovers, omit avocado

1 Mango, peeled and diced Optional, for extra sweetness

ASIAN HONEY VINAIGRETTE:1/4 cup Honey1/3 cup Rice wine vinegar1 tbsp Soy sauce1 tbsp Sesame oil

1 tsp Ginger, grated fresh or more, if you love ginger

1/2 – 1 tsp Sriracha Optional

2/3 cup Vegetable oil (I like grapeseed for its neutral flavour)

Pinch Pepper and salt, to taste

INSTRUCTIONS:To make vinaigrette, mix all ingre-dients except oil in a bowl, then whisking continuously, slowly driz-zle in oil until all the oil has been added and the dressing is mixed. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Preheat oven to 425 degrees and spread the crumbled Ramen noo-dles and sliced almonds on a cookie sheet and stir to combine. Bake about 5-8 minutes, or until slightly golden and toasted, stirring once in between. Watch carefully as they can burn very quickly, and then you’ve got to toss them and start all over! Add all ingredients, including vinaigrette in a large bowl and stir to combine. Serve immediately, or can be covered and refrigerated for up to 2 or 3 days. This salad is best eaten the day it’s made, as the noodles will lose their crunch the longer it sits.

SALAD INGREDIENTS:4 cups Cabbage, shredded

I love Napa cabbage but plain cabbage works as well

1-2 Carrots, shredded Can substitute 1 (16oz) bag coleslaw mix or broccoli coleslaw mix for cabbage and carrots

2 pkgs (3 oz) Ramen noodles, roughly crumbled Discard seasoning mix

1 cup Edamame beans, shelled and cooked

1/2 cup Almonds, thinly sliced Blanched or unblanched

1/4 cup Sunflower seeds, roasted and salted

1/2 cup Green onions, thinly sliced
