Celebrating local artistsThe night of April 11 will be one of glitz and glamour, celebrating the many contributions that artists make to the community, as the Abbotsford Arts Council holds the 11th Annual Arty Awards at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium.

“These artists play an active role in ensuring that our city continues to remain vibrant,” says Gail Gromaski, executive director of the Abbotsford Arts Council.

“Art serves as an outlet for personal expression, builds social skills and relationships, and bridges cultural and economic divides.”

Manjit Singh Sandhu was chosen collectively by the Abbotsford Arts Council’s board of directors to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for his significant impact on the community throughout his career.

For the past eight years, Sandhu has illustrated the diverse heritage of the region; something he feels is important to preserve for future generations.

“Art is a continuous journey that has the potential to transport the

by singer Frank David during the opening reception, and a musical performance by the winning musician(s) from CIVL Radio’s Battle of the Bands Competition.

“Imagine how our community would look and feel if it were to be void of public art, the sound of music, or the range of emotion felt through viewing an actor bringing a story or character to life on stage,” says Gromaski. “This is why the Abbotsford Arts Council’s mission is to promote, preserve, and celebrate the vision, creativity and energy of the community through initiatives such as the Arty Awards.”

The Arty Awards is an alcohol-free event in support of the BC Teen Challenge Women’s Centre Students’ commitment to overcoming addiction.

General admission is $20 and children under eight are free. Tickets are available online through  Eventbrite.ca  and at the Kariton Art Gallery, located at 2387 Ware Street in Abbotsford. For more information, visit abbotsfordartscouncil.com.

spectator,” says Sandhu. “An artist’s creation can touch a person’s soul and leave a lasting impact.”

Executive chef at Restaurant 62, Jeff Massey, is nominated for Outstanding Artist in the Culinary Arts – this year’s newest category.

“I think it’s important because of the impact that food has on a person’s life every day,” says Massey on cuisine being recognized as an art form. “Even the most simply plated, yet well-executed food is beautiful, and nourishing to the body, mind and spirit.”

Not only is Massey nominated, but Restaurant 62 is also catering the event, so he guarantees that the canapés will be great.

This year’s theme is “Old Hollywood Glamour” and will see guests channeling their inner Marilyn Monroe or Clark Gable with tuxedos, bow ties, top hats and elegant gowns. As a tie-in to the theme, the awards will showcase a condensed version of Groove Force Production’s legendary Moulin Rouge performance. Other live entertainment includes a swinging musical performance

As the weather gets warmer, add some excitement to your wardrobe with a variety of fun patterns.

For the spring of 2015, jump straight into the spirit of the season with flowing florals, which can look romantic on a long dress and be dressed down with a classic denim jacket.

Men can get in on the floral trend by wearing a patterned shirt in muted colours. Add some fun to a plain wardrobe with a punchy patterned shirt beneath a simple vest.

For the adventurous, mixing and matching pattens — keeping the pieces in the same colour scheme — is a great way to create a unique look that you won’t see anywhere else. An interesting design can help freshen-up a winter outfit and make it spring-ready.

The Farmer and the Foodie

Let’s answer the most important ques-tion first. How do you pronounce it? SIR-AH-CHA!

Unfortunately, it’s also the name of a Thai seaside village where the sauce originated, hence the name couldn’t be trademarked. However, David Tran, owner of Huy Fong Foods, the brand with the recognizable rooster and bright green lid was the first, and often copied, producer of the sauce in North America. The Huy Fong freighter carried him from his war-torn Vietnam homeland to the US in 1975, and in gratitude David named his company after the ship. While having already produced the sauce in baby food jars, peddling it by bicycle in Vietnam, when faced with no job and finding no

hot sauce he liked, he began creating his own in a small production facility in California. Shortly after, the Under-wood family, 4th generation Californian farmers, approached Mr. Fong asking whether they could begin growing red jalapenos for him. For 35 years, annu-ally growing 2,000 acres of peppers, they have remained the sole supplier for Huy Fong foods. Along with using only North American grown garlic, this unique farmer to producer product is about as local and fresh as you’ll find. I love buying their product knowing I’m supporting a single family farm, the products are grown in North America, and this “hipster ketch-up” comes with a great story!

Sriracha Teriyaki SalmonPROVIDED BY LEPP FARM MARKET

INSTRUCTIONS:

To make the Sriracha cream sauce, whisk together mayonnaise, 2 table-spoons Sriracha and condensed milk OR honey and whipping cream in a small bowl; set aside. Let it sit for a bit to allow the flavours to blend, and then add more Sriracha if you want it spicier.

In a small bowl, whisk together corn-starch and 1/4 cup water; set aside.

In a small saucepan over medium heat, add soy sauce, brown sugar, gin-ger, garlic powder, honey and 1 cup

water; bring to a simmer. Stir in corn-starch mixture until thickened enough to coat the back of a spoon, about 2 minutes; let cool to room temperature.

Preheat oven to 400°F. Lightly coat an 8×8 baking dish with nonstick spray. Place fillets in a single layer and pour the marinade on top, turning occa-sionally to evenly distribute. Marinate 30 minutes to 4 hours.

Bake until the fish flakes easily with a fork, about 15 - 20 minutes.

Serve salmon immediately with Srira-cha cream sauce.

bold for you, choose a more pastel, peachy hue, which is equally warm and energizing.

YELLOWFew colors are more vibrant than yellow, which can help stimulate conversation and make thoughts more focused. A luminous shade of yellow can make any space more welcoming and bright. Just use it sparingly, as too much yellow may not be a good thing. Try mixing in touches of purple to create balance in the space.

Finding the right shade to paint a bedroom or kitchen involves more than just selecting the first colour that catches your eye. Design experts and psychologists alike say it may be worthwhile to choose a colour that helps you feel good rather than just following design trends. The paint colour you choose may add energy to a space or create a tranquil retreat where you can unwind.

BLUETo create a spa-like environment and a more serene space, look to shades of blue in soft variations. Cool blues are soothing colours that can help lower stress levels and promote sleep. Too much blue however, can make a room appear cold and stark, so balance out blue with some warmer accents.

ORANGEOrange is considered a shade that expands creativity and imparts a youthful appeal to a space. Consider an orange accent wall or a burst of colour with orange throw pillows. If pumpkin orange is a little too

GREENGreen can evoke composure and tranquility and works in any room. Since green is the primary colour of nature, it also works well for those people who want to bring some of the outdoors inside. To make green feel less subdued and sleepy, work with its complementary opposite, red, by using a few bold red accents here and there to balance the tranquility of green.

REDRed stimulates energy and appetite, which is why the shade is so popular in restaurants and dining rooms. Red is a good choice for social gathering rooms but may not be the wisest choice for a bedroom, as the colour may prove overstimulating.

Home decorators should keep in mind that colours can be blended to create the desired environment. A colour scheme based on complementary colours, or those opposite on the colour wheel, may fit.

These workouts seem to promote faster weight loss than prolonged workouts at moderate paces.

While HIIT is functional, it is not best for those who have preexisting orthopedic injuries or serious cardiovascular conditions. But many people enjoy a stronger heart and improved muscle tone from HIIT workouts.

TRAMPOLINE CARDIO

For those who want to both shake up their workouts and lift their moods, jumping on a trampoline can do just that. It’s difficult to be in a bad mood when bouncing around like a

Exercising consistently is a great way to get healthy. For those who find their workout routines monotonous, switching up exercises and embracing some of the newer, trendier fitness regimens may be a way to maintain your momentum at the gym.

KETTLEBELLS

These weighted cast-iron workout tools can be an interesting addition to strength-training workouts. But their utility does not stop there. Using kettlebells during any physical activity will increase the amount of fat burned and can provide a full-body workout. Kettlebells come in different weights, and newcomers are urged to start out gradually and build up in weight as they become more familiar and toned.

HIGH-INTENSITY WORKOUTS

High-intensity interval training, or HIIT, combines cardiovascular and strength-training movements into a concentrated workout designed to keep your heart rate elevated. HIIT workouts blend bouts of intense exercise with either rest or low-intensity activity.

kid on a trampoline. In Trampoline classes, each participant has his own individual trampoline. Routines mix in different choreography and small hand weights.

WATER AEROBICS

Swimming isn’t the only thing you can do in a pool. Water workouts are ideal for those with muscle and joint pain because the buoyancy of the water reduces stress on these areas, while providing enough resistance for a deep workout. Workouts may begin in chest-deep water and progress to deeper water for added resistance. Some gyms now offer aqua cycling classes that combine water aerobics with spinning.

RECESS CLASSES

Adults who want to feel like kids again need only to enroll in a fitness class that borrows activities from the playgrounds of our youth. From walking like a crab to running drills to balance beams, these workouts take school recess and bring it to the health club.
