Labor Day weekend, all schools are back in session, summer is waning, and fall approaching. A lot of change comes to our community in September. Personally, at my home, September brings several birthdays, mine included, my wife’s and my anniversary, and another fall of empty nest syndrome. No matter how we look at it, this month is big on change. Our church shifts gears from summer back to Wonderful Wednesdays, we begin serious planning for Choir Fest, plus Equipping the Saints, both coming to us in October. Choir is starting back and we have thoughts of cooler weather. These are all things we have done each year but every time there are those parts that are new and have their own identity. Southminster's Session is going full swing and now meeting on Thursday evening instead of Sunday night. Things are still the same but always changing, sometimes a lot and sometimes only a little, always though there is change. In September I get one more year older. We celebrate another year together as husband and wife. Plus it is the start of another year for JayE and me at this wonderful church. We can not begin to express how wonderful being a part of Southminster has been. Sure there are always the ups and downs as in any relationship, but for us the ups far outweigh anything else. Each Sunday or Wonderful Wednesdays we get to meet some of the nicest people ever. We hear about your families, your joys and your trials. We are seeing several new people coming and that is just another joy to experience at the church. Our staff has come together and are sure a pleasure to work with. Tara is a real diamond and a great help to me. One can not say enough about Paul and Judy but let us all remember to keep them in our prayers. Garret is a bright and positive young man who is growing every week. I see the yearly changes and the ongoing change at Southminster as God moving us along in life. In my mind it is not bad to be going down this road with such a wonderful group of people. We, JayE, Sky, and I, want to thank all of you for letting us be in your lives and we are blessed that you are in ours. God be merciful, kind, loving, and present in your hearts. We love you all. The next two months are exciting for John Calvin Presbytery. We will be having three presbytery wide events which are open to everyone. The first on is a continuing education event for everyone in the Presbytery. It is a six week online interactive series called “Worship Reboot” which will be taught by Dr. Marcia McFee. More information can be found on the website. Second, our International Peacemaker, Doug Baker, will be with us from September 22-28 and during that time, JCP will host a time with him on Saturday, September 23rd at 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Presbyterian Church in Springfield, MO. Third, Equipping the Saints with keynote speaker, Joan Gray, will be on October 21st at Southminster Presbyterian Church in Springfield, MO beginning at 8:45. This event offers many different workshops along with the plenaries with Joan. More information is also on the website. I would encourage you to participate in as many of these events as possible as we work to keep our connections strong in JCP.

Dear Southminster Church Family- I would like to thank everyone for the many prayers, cards and telephone calls during my recent illness and hospitalization. It was reassuring that the bond with the congregation and my family was shown. The rose and the visits by Pastor Charley and others was greatly appreciated. Thanks again for your concern and prayers. Scroll Notes Stated Session Meeting

May 21, 2017

Clerk’s Report: Pam Curtis went to the Presbytery’s Clerk of Session Review on May 13 at Woodland Heights Presbyterian Church for the annual minutes and register review. Our books were approved for this year. It was approved by Session to purchase the minutes book and check on a fireproof cabinet. Committee Reports: Worship: Garrett Lea was welcomed into the committee. When Phillip Smith is available he will be helping Garrett as Choir Director until Garrett gets more settled into a routine.

Congregational Care: Equipping the Saints Workshop will be held at Southminster on October 21 from 8:45 am to 3:30 pm. Ten Subway cards were mailed to students taking finals. Christian Education: Wednesday, May 24, our “Spring Fling”, which will be the last Wonderful Wednesday was held. A thank you was extended to the Christian Education Committee for setting up the Seder Meal and the Mother’s Day Dinner.

Mission: Sue Moore reported that Crosslines served 84 families with 198 people. The playground was in question, as to when it will be completed. Sue also asked about a decision on what project Jean Stokke’s money will be used. The Back to School Bash will be held in July for Holland School. Stewardship: The Pentecost Offering will be Sunday, June 4. A birthday cake will be offered after the service in celebration of Pentecost. Administration/Property: A new beam was installed on the north side of the chimney above the piano in the Narthex. Gutter replacement is completed and extensions are in place and eight garden areas in the community garden have been planted. The issue of new chairs to replace the old wooden ones was discussed. It was moved to purchase 200 chairs after we look over material and agree on purchase. Roofing and siding will need to be done on the west side of the narthex. Pastor’s Report: Conducted six services, one requested funeral outside of the church, visited Holland School twice, made three hospital visits and numerous phone calls, conducted six Wonderful Wednesdays with one managed by Chaplain JayE Shurtz, interacted with Bethany and Christian Community Churches as well as both AA groups. Attended the May Presbytery meeting in Shell Knob with Ted Scott. Request Session to allow the church to withhold money to cover end of year social security taxes for housing and salary. Motion was made and seconded and passed to withhold from housing and salary to pay for his taxes. Unfinished Business Seekers: Will have a garage sale in August. New Business Bringing in the Flags – Would like to bring in the U.S. Flag and the Christian Flag into the sanctuary on a permanent basis. Discussion to have the flags returned to the sanctuary is due to the number of people who had expressed a wish to have them returned. It was moved the U.S. flag and Christian flag be brought into the sanctuary on a permanent basis, motion was seconded. Voting was 3 for bringing them in; 2 abstentions and 1 opposed. Pastor Shurtz broke the tie with a “for” vote, but will clarify his vote. Pam Curtis, Clerk of Session
