March, March, March. Reminds me of a time, in another life, as a young soldier, that a

particular battalion commander decided he needed to show his battalion’s fighting readiness by

marching them 50 miles in a 24 hour period. I made it. Many others did not. I saw so many

bloody feet over that 24 hours it still seems remarkable 40 plus years later. Our lieutenant

cried when he had to give up just 5 miles from the end of that forced march when the medics

made him get in a jeep after they poured the blood out of his boots. Both feet had become open

oozing messes. March, March, March. That time of year one thinks of spring coming and

winter passing. The harshness of cold giving way to the warmth of a new time of year. It is the

time of year I remember the numbness and fog of having lost my first son to Osteogenesis

Imperfecta. The idea that a parent should lose a child never crossed the mind because of the

pain and suffering.

March, March, March. Reminds me of the time we received a call from the doctor saying my

mother had passed out at her factory job. A place she had worked for 36 years breathing in

dust, thread particles, and getting minimum wage. She worked on her 8th grade education and

spent what free time she could reading. However, 5 months after passing out at work, we

buried mom as her struggle with cancer took her life.

March, March, March. Usually, though like this year not always, the time we think of Easter.

Christ, born of the Virgin, lived a carpenter’s life, preached love one another, and love God,

beaten, flogged, nailed to a cross for no faults committed. Yet like anything else the pain of loss

was tremendous. Tears by his mother, friends, and followers, crying from such anguish. Why

oh why? We know some of that why. So you and I can sustain faith in God, seek divine counsel

in prayer, lift one another up, give thanks for all we have, seek justice for all, and to continue to

onwardly march, march, march. May this March be an exceptional one for you!

FROM

In my travels around JCP, I am often asked about Shared Mission. Shared Mission is the portion of the budget which supports what God has called us to do as a Presbytery. There are many missions which are supported by our Shared Mission dollars. First there is the work of the Mission and Nurture Committee. They are the heart of mission in JCP. Right now they are working on Equipping the Saints, a Presbytery wide leadership event which will be held on October 21, 2017 at Southminster Presbyterian Church in Springfield, MO. Our keynote speaker will be Joan Gray, author of the book, Sailboat Church: Helping Your Church Rethink Its Mission and Practice. Mission and Nurture is also responsible for distributing camp scholarships and the Peace & Global Witness grants. Shared Mission also funds, along with offerings at Presbytery meetings, the Creative Ministry Grants given out each August, as well as the Small Church Resource Grant, JCPDA, Living Waters for the World, Triennium, Boundaries Training, Emergency needs for pastors, office supplies, insurance, accounting services and salaries for the Pastoral Presbyter and the Recording Clerk.

As you can see, Shared Mission is a big part of our overall call as a Presbytery to reach out to others in the name of our Lord. As you consider your giving as a church and as individuals, I would encourage you to consider a gift to Shared Mission. It can make a difference in the lives of many people in JCP and around the world.

Around the world, people lack access to food, clean water, sanitation, education, and opportunity. Each gift to One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) serves to help change the lives of people in these challenging situations. The Offering provides us a way to share God’s love with our neighbors in need.

One Great Hour of Sharing, received during the season of Lent, makes a difference in the world through three impactful programs: Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, the Presbyterian Hunger Program, and Self-Development of People.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) Works within communities as they recover and find hope after the devastation of natural or human-caused disasters. Receives 32% of funds raised Presbyterian Hunger Program (PHP) Takes action to alleviate hunger and its systemic causes, and helps create access to healthy food for entire communities. Receives 36% of funds raised Self-Development of People (SDOP) Partners with people and communities with tools for development and education to alleviate poverty, oppression, and injustice. Receives 32% of funds raised Started in 1949, One Great Hour of Sharing is a long-standing ecumenical effort aimed at raising the funds necessary to provide relief and reconstruction for communities in the aftermath of disaster. What started as an hour-long radio appeal has evolved over the years, varying from eight to 29 participating denominations, and has become the most participated-in Offering in the PC(USA). Today, projects supported by One Great Hour of Sharing are underway in more than 100 countries.

SEEKERS YARD SALE is coming up sometime in July, actual date to be announced at a later time. SEEKERS are asking Southminster

members again to set aside a box at your house for your unwanted donations to support the 2017 SEEKERS YARD SALE fundraiser to help sponsor our events throughout the year. DO NOT bring items to the church as we have no storage to keep the items, but gather them in your home until July. Then if you need us to pick up your boxes we can do that or you can drop them off at the church on July’s stated drop off date. Thanks to the congregation and your donations, it continues to keep the SEEKERS committed to our cause.

Michael Lyons Seekers Chair

Property has planned a Spring Cleaning and repair day. Please try to come help with well needed projects at the church March 24th and 25th, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Thanks, Michael Lyons, Property Chair

The community Garden project is getting closer. The "GET A PLOT, ADOPT A PLOT" theme seemed to be a great way of running this. The idea is if you get a 4' x 8' plot to grow your own plants, you adopt the same size plot to plant and care for. Southminster provides soil and water, then when the plants are ready to harvest, that half of the harvest will go to Southminster to offer FREE to the community as an outreach to help feed our community, and you keep your half. Seeds may also be offered if needed.

If you are a willing gardener please contact Property Chair Michael Lyons 417-771-7484 for more information.
