This is SoutheasternSince its founding in 1925, Southeastern Louisiana

University has been committed to helping the region grow and prosper. Our mission -- to lead

the educational, economic and cultural development of southeast Louisiana – ties Southeastern intimately to the lives of the communities and residents we serve.

Quick Facts & Figures• Enrollment: approximately 15,400• Faculty: 637 (full and part time)• Student-Faculty ratio: 26:1• Sites: Hammond (main campus), St. Tammany Center (Mandeville), Livingston Parish Literacy and Technology Center (Walker), Nursing Center (Baton Rouge), Turtle Cove Environmental Research Center (Pass Manchac)

Economic Impact • More than $564 million annual impact. Spending by the university’s more than 15,000 students accounts for an approximate $237 million impact, while faculty and staff spending amounts to a $99 million impact. • As part of the University of Louisiana System, the impact of each dollar invested in the university is multiplied by eight as it cycles through the state economy.• More than 5,700 non-university jobs throughout the state in areas such as construction, health care and food services.

Community Impact • Southeastern students provided approximately 133,000 hours of voluntary service to national and area non-profit agencies and other organizations

durng the past year. More than 5,300 students par-ticpated in service activites throughout the region.• The Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts is a venue for a wide range of educational and entertain-ing events. Fanfare, the annual festival of the arts, has entertained and educated thousands of patrons over the past 28 seasons.• Multiple service-learning courses provide students the opportunity to serve their communities while participating in hands-on learning.

Academic Excellence • Incoming freshman ACT average composite scores (21.4) last fall exceeded both the state and national averages. Highly qualified students entering South-eastern – those with ACT scores of 24 and above – have increased nearly 50 percent in the past five years.• In a report issued by the Southern Regional Educa-tion Board, Southeastern’s master’s degree program in education was rated among the best in the south-ern states in preparing future school principals and other education leaders. • The School of Nursing has been named the Nursing Program of the Year three times in the last 10 years by the Louisiana State Nurses Foundation. • Southeastern has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Rolls for the past three years, recognizing the university as a front-runner for its involvement in volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. The award was made by the Corporation for National and Community Service.• In order to encourage students to complete their undergraduate degree in four years, Southeastern offers a unique “Progression Scholarship” to students

who demonstrate satisfactory progress toward graduation. • Southeastern’s redesigned mathematics courses have increased success in courses often considered “barriers” to student success. In two years, the col-lege algebra success rate has improved by 27 percent and the withdrawal rate is steadily falling.

Successful Alumni• Alumni of Southeastern are successful in all areas of business, government, and entertainment. Recently recognized as distinguished alums are Good Morn-ing America anchor Robin Roberts, internationally recognized opera tenor Donald George, Chinese real estate and retailing entrepreneur Roger Wang, El Salvador Finance Minister William Handal, Federal Judges James Brady and Carl J. Barbier, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Russell Carollo, and former Ameri-can Heart Association Chair Colletta C. Barrett.

Campus Living• Campus living is convenient, smart and fun! Southeastern students have the opportunity to meet and mingle with people of different backgrounds, in-terests, ideas, experiences, and goals. Southeastern’s campus provides dining halls, library, bookstore, health center, swimming pool, tennis courts, student activity center and a student union with a game room, snack bars, and post office. • Southeastern’s eight state-of-the-art residence halls, plus apartment-style Southeastern Oaks and the Village features the amenities today’s students seek such as privacy, cable TV, and wireless Internet.• Southeastern is the only university in Louisiana, and one of just a few in the nation, which operates a university-owned textbook rental system. Students pay a small rental fee at the beginning of the semes-ter, and simply return books at the end, resulting in a significant savings.

Workforce Development• A number of new undergraduate degrees have been specifically designed to meet area workforce demands. These include an online RN to BS degree in nursing, supply chain management, engineering technology with mechanical, construction, computer science, and industrial technology concentrations, additional clinical training in radiology technology,

and doctoral programs in educational leadership and advanced nursing practice.• Since opening in 2003, the Southeast Louisiana Business Center has functioned as a one-stop center designed to facilitate more than 125 new business starts, more than $130 million in capital raised for businesses; 13 incubator “graduates” creating nearly 50 jobs and millions of dollars in new capital; and the completion of more than 40 business and industry economic impact studies.• The Southeastern Small Business Development Center was recognized in 2012 with the SBDC Ex-cellence and Innovation Award, given annually to the program that demonstrates excellence in improving value to small businesses and advancing program delivery and management through innovation.• A survey of employers who have hired South-eastern graduates indicates that more than 75 percent found Southeastern graduates were better prepared for employment when compared to other employees; all said they would readily hire another Southeastern graduate.

The PRIDEPositive Role Models Involved in the Development of Excellence

The Southeastern PRIDE (Positive Role Models Involved in the Development of Excellence) group is includes successful women from the campus and local community who have come together to assist the student-athletes representing the Southeastern Louisiana women’s basketball program be suc-cess off the court as well as on the court. Serving as mentors for the Lady Lion players, the members of the PRIDE are valued contributors to the success of the Southeastern Louisiana wom-en’s basketball program.

“One of our program’s primary objectives is to help provide our student-athletes with the tools and guidance to succeed beyond the basketball court,” Southeastern head coach Lori Davis Jones said. “The PRIDE members provide the mem-bers of our program with outstanding examples of what it takes and what it means to be successful.

“Whether it’s advice, support or just a sympathetic ear, our mentors are always doing whatever they can to help our stu-dent-athletes on and off the court,” Jones added. “We are very fortunate and thankful that we have such a dynamic and inspi-rational group of women who are willing to show such support for our program.”

Head Coach Lori Davis Jones12th Year at Southeastern - School Record: 137-178

Overall Career Record: 315-275 Southeastern Louisiana, 1992

Lori Davis Jones is entering her 12th season at the helm of the Southeastern Louisiana University women’s basketball program. During her ten-ure, the Lady Lions have seen their program continue to improve and grow.Under the guidance of Jones and her staff, the Lady Lions have won two Southland Conference East Division championships (2006-07, 2008-09). Under Jones, Southeastern has had 17 All-Southland Conference and 10 All-Louisiana selections. Seven different Lady Lions have earned Academic All-Southland Conference accolades during Jones’ time at the helm of the program. Jones’ squads have also been very active in the local community, participating in projects such as Habitat for Humanity and Relay for Life. Under Jones, the PRIDE (Positive Role Models in the Development of Excellence) group has been developed, as successful women from the local and campus community serve as mentors for the Lady Lion student-athletes. Jones took over the reins of the Southeastern women’s basketball program prior to the 2002-03 season. In her first year at the helm, she compiled a 7-20 record in her first steps to bringing Southeastern’s program back to prominence. In 2003-04, Southeastern took further steps towards Southland Conference contention, nearly doubling its win total from the previous season. The 2003-04 Lady Lions finished with a 12-15 mark and fell just short of reach-ing the SLC Tournament for the first time since 2001-02. Under Jones and her staff ’s tutelage, junior forward Nakeya Downing was named Newcomer of the Year in both the Southland Conference and the state of Louisiana. In 2004-05, the Lady Lions finished with a 10-17 record and again narrowly missed a berth in the Southland Conference Tournament. Downing finished her senior season third in the nation in rebounding and was a first-team All-SLC and All-Louisiana selection by the SLC. 2005-06 saw Jones lead the Lady Lions to their first Southland Conference Tournament berth since 2001-02. The Lady Lions rolled off a six-game win streak during the season and picked up road wins at Louisiana-Monroe and Northwestern State for the first time in three decades. The 2006-07 season saw Jones lead the Lady Lions to new heights, as the team finished with a 17-13 record and won the SLC East Division title. It marked the first winning season for Southeastern since the 1994-95 season and its first conference title in school history. Southeastern placed three players on the All-SLC team – Brenita Williams, Jazmin Cain and Tina Wilson – for the first time since the 2001-02 season. The Lady Lions were also outstanding in the classroom, as Williams, Cain and Brooke Necaise gave the Lady Lions a league-high three players on the SLC All-Academic team.

In 2007-08, Southeastern placed Kristy Carlin and Necaise on the All-SLC team. Necaise became the school’s career leader for three-point field goals made and free-throw percentage, while also setting the school record for three-point field goals in a single season. Necaise also became the school’s first three-time SLC All-Academic selection. In 2008-09, Southeastern enjoyed its best season of Jones’ tenure, winning their second SLC East Division title in three years and finishing with a 19-11 overall record – the program’s best mark since the 1994-95 season. The Lady Lions’ 11-5 mark in league play was also the program’s best since joining the Southland prior to the 1997-98 campaign. The 2008-09 Lady Lions featured All-Southland performers Carlin and Charinee Mitchell, both who were also named to the Academic All-Southland teams. Southeastern also connected on a school and SLC record 220 three-pointers in 2008-09. Jones reached a milestone in a 2009-10 season that saw the Lady Lions advance to the SLC Tournament for the fourth time in five years. In a 77-50 win over Central Arkansas, she became the third head coach in the program’s history to reach 100 career wins. Senior Zevy Ivory represented Southeastern on the All-Southland Conference team. The 2010-11 team advanced to the Southland Conference Tournament for the third consecutive season and the fifth time in the last six years. Senior Rashima Jenkins represented Southeastern on the All-Southland Conference team as a third team selection. The 2011-12 season saw Southeastern make its fourth consecutive trip to the Southland Conference Tournament, behind All-Southland performers Kelli Jenkins and Aja Gibson. Jones won her 300th game as a head coach during the year, while Jenkins became the 16th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points. In 2012-13, Jones again had a pair of players on the All-Southland Conference team, as Gibson and Brandi Simmons represented the Lady Lions. Sophomore guard Symone Miller was also named to the Academic All-Southland Conference team. After a successful eight-year stint at Lambuth, where she led the Lady Eagles to unprecedented success, Jones returned to her alma mater with simple goals in moving Southeastern into the upper echelons of the Southland Conference. Jones, who completed her playing career at Southeastern in 1991, had unparalleled success upon taking over the Lambuth program in 1994-95. In eight years as head coach, Jones enjoyed seven straight 20-win sea-sons, four consecutive berths in the NAIA National Tournament and advanced

Dumas primarily works with the guards and works on developing scouting reports and game plans for each Southeastern opponent. Dumas is also a vital member of the Southeastern recruiting process and oversees the Lady Lion conditioning program.

Dumas spent the previous 10 seasons working with the post group. Under Dumas’ guidance, the Lady Lion post corps helped Southeastern to a Southland Conference-best plus-5.7 rebounding margin in 2008-09. Dumas worked with multi-time All-Southland selection Kristy Carlin – one of the top scorers and rebounders in school history – as well as All-Southland performers Aja Gibson, Rashima Jenkins, Brenita Williams, Jazmin Cain, Nakeya Downing, Zevy Ivory and Pam Mathews.

Dumas spent six seasons as an assistant for men's coach Brad Jones at Lambuth and served his last season at Lambuth as an assistant for Lori Davis Jones. Dumas was interim head coach for part of the 2001-02 season and dur-ing his tenure with the Lady Eagles, he served as recruiting coordinator and coached the post players.

The Paducah, Ky., native helped guide the Lady Eagles to a Sweet 16 berth in the 2001-02 NAIA Tournament. He also helped Lambuth men's team to the 1999 NAIA National Tournament for the first time and the Mid-South Conference Championship in 1999-2000.

Prior to entering coaching, Dumas played men’s basketball at Lambuth, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in education in 1996. At Paducah Tillman High School, Dumas played on the boy’s basketball team and was a member of the football team as a freshman. Dumas resides in Hammond.

2013-14 Season Preview Featuring a solid returning nucleus and an array of talented newcomers, the Southeastern Louisiana women’s basketball team heads into the 2013-14 season with expectations to take a step forward in its quest to compete for a Southland Conference championship.

Southeastern returns three starters and six letter winners from last season. Lady Lion head coach Lori Davis Jones believes the team has made the necessary additions and improvements to return to the Southland Conference Tournament after missing the postseason for the first time in five seasons in 2012-13.

“We knew that we had to address issues on both sides of the ball,” Jones said. “We feel that with the additions we’ve made, as well as the maturation of our returners we are going to be able to score the ball more easily. We have added players with a scoring mentality. We plan on playing more up tempo to give our scorers more opportunity.

“Our defensive integrity also had to improve and we feel like we’ve addressed that,” Jones added. “The main problem we had defensively last season was lack of depth. We feel we are much deeper, more experience team heading into the 2013-14 season.”

Southeastern’s top returner is senior forward Aja Gibson, a preseason first team All-Southland Conference choice and the team’s top scorer in each of the past two seasons. Gibson, who averaged 10.9 points a season ago and was named to the All-Southland Conference third team, will once again be the team’s go-to player and team with sophomore Nanna Pool, as well as newcomers Adrina LaVern and Chey Stewart to give the Lady Lions a deep post corps.

“Aja has been a steady performer for us throughout her career and we feel us moving to a more up-tempo style will allow her to be more productive,” Jones said. “We expect Nanna to step in as our other starting post. We need her to be more versatile offen-sively while also concentrating on becoming a better defender. Adrina will be a steady solid performer from day one. The wild card in the paint is Chey. She gives us more toughness in the paint and will likely play significant minutes as a true freshman.”

The starting backcourt of juniors Elizabeth Styles and Symone Miller also return for the Lady Lions. Styles was third on the team with 9.3 points per game and was third in the Southland with 4.8 assists last season, while Miller chipped in 8.1 points per contest. Sophomore Erica Hernandez, as well as newcomers Annessa De La Cruz, Brandi Riddle, Peaches Anderson and Dani Fielder should provide a versatile back court.

“Liz and Symone are upperclass-men now, so we expect them to take the next step,” Jones commented. “Liz made a lot of strides last season and we want her to continue to play at a fast pace, but still make sound decisions. Symone has to come in with more of a scoring mentality. She has to be more aggressive offensively for us to succeed.

“Peaches transferred in mid year last season from Michigan and will join us after the fall semester,” Jones added. “She will have an immediate impact as a steady player with a high basketball IQ. Annessa has Division I experience after playing at American University as a freshman and both she and Brandi were both big-time scorers in good junior college leagues. Erica’s a great shooter who will help us space the floor. We are looking forward to seeing Dani develop this season. She’s a tremendous athlete.”

Jones believes the Southland Conference race is as wide open as it has been in recent years.

“This is going to be an intriguing year in the Southland,” Jones said. “So many of the top players from last season were seniors, so we are interested to see how we match up against the competition. We feel like we’ve made great strides from a talent and depth standpoint. We’re excited about the coming season and we are confident that we will be very competitive in league play.”

Linda Puckett1945-1997

Inducted into the Southeastern Hall of

Fame in 2002

During the latter months of 1976 and into the early months of 1977, a lot of things were happening in the world. In the political world, Jimmy Carter, then the Governor of Georgia, was on his way to being elected President of the United States over Gerald Ford. On the football field, the Oakland Raiders, led by a coach named Madden and a quarterback nicknamed “Snake,” were on their way to capturing Super Bowl XI. On the television, a fictitious group of high school kids called the “Sweat Hogs” were keeping us in stitches every week on “Welcome Back Kotter.” And on the silver screen, we were preparing to go to “a galaxy far, far away.”

And in Hammond, an already successful women’s basketball team was about to make history. Not just in Tangipahoa Parish or the state of Louisiana, but on the national scene. The 1976-77 AIAW Small College National Championship team is a proud highlight in Southeastern’s rich athletic history. In its third year of existence, the Lady Lions added to an already glittering array of accomplishments after going 52-4 in their first two campaigns under the ever-successful Linda Puckett. In 2006-07, we celebrate the 30th anniversary of this feat.

1976-77 AIAW National Champions Led by the solid all-around play of Pam Cook and the dominating inside presence of Queen Brumfield and Sarah Williams, the Lady Lions outscored their opposition by over 36 points per game and produced 15 contests in which they scored 100 or more points. Starting in impressive fashion, the Lady Lions won their first 12 games to open the season, scoring 100 or more points in seven games to earn the reputation as the nation’s highest scoring team. Southeastern suffered its first loss at the University of Texas Tournament, where it lost 80-79 to Stephen F. Austin where it missed a last second shot. In the tournament, however, Southeastern defeated Trinity University and Texas en route to the finals. That performance catapulted Southeastern into the top-15 among small colleges, a posi-tion it would remain in for the remainder of the season. The Lady Lions tallied eight consecutive wins coming out of the Texas Tournament before losing to LSU, which finished second overall in the Major College AIAW Tournament. During that stretch were vic-tories over Louisiana Tech and a 106-69 trouncing of LSU. The 101-77 loss at LSU would be the final loss of the season for the Lady Lions as they rolled through the LAIAW Small College Tournament with ease, pounding Louisiana College and McNeese State twice. Southeastern hosted the AIAW Regional Tournament in Cefalu Coliseum and started out the tournament with a 132-50 thrashing of Central Arkansas, which still stands as the largest margin of victory in Lady Lion history. The Lady Lions came back with a convincing win over Southern Arkansas before defeating Phillips (Okla.) University, a team that finished third in the nation the previous season. For the Lady Lions, it was off to Pomona, Calif., where they would compete in the National AIAW Tournament for the second consecutive season. In 1975-76, the Lady Lions finished fifth in the nation with a 30-2 overall record. For Southeastern to improve on the 1975-76 per-formance, it would have to have solid play from its starters along with

its bench. After opening the tournament with a 91-50 win over Dayton, the Lady Lions knocked off previously unbeaten High Point (N.C.) University in convincing fashion, 112-85. That win advanced Southeastern to a date with defending national champion Berry (Ga.) College with a berth in the championship game on the line. Against Berry, Southeastern overcame injuries and foul trouble to key players, getting excellent play from its reserves as the prevailed, 86-81, and moved on to the championship game. In a rematch from the AIAW Region IV Tournament, Southeastern faced Phillips University fr the Small College National Championship and took a 92-76 victory giv-ing the Lady Lions the national championship. Athletic AdministrationAfter a successful eight-season stint as Southeastern

Louisiana University’s head baseball coach, Jay Ar-tigues was named the school’s Director of Athletics

on Oct. 14, 2013. Named one of the rising head coaches in the college game prior to the 2013 season, Artigues compiled a 276-188 won-loss record in his eight years in charge of the Southeastern baseball program. Under Artigues the Lions established themselves as a growing force in the region having posted marquee victories over LSU, Tulane, South Alabama and Southern Mississippi. In 2010, the Lions posted a three-game sweep at Mississippi State and in 2012 added a two-game sweep of the Bulldogs, compiling a five-game win streak against the SEC power. Since Artigues took over the reins of the program, the Lions have produced three All-Americans, four Freshman All-Americans, a Capital One Academic All-American, the NCBWA National Stopper of the Year, the Southland Conference’s Player, Hitter, Relief Pitcher and Freshman of the Year, numerous All-Conference and Southland All-Academic players as well as Southeastern single-season and career record holders. Artigues, a native of Bay St. Louis, Miss., inherited a program that had not finished above .500 since 1998; after a 23-32 finish in his first year at Southeastern the Lions posted seven straight 30-plus win seasons, a school record 40 wins in 2010 and consecutive appearances in the Southland Conference Championship Game (2012 and 2013). In 2012, Southeastern racked up several national, regional and conference awards. Advancing to the champi-onship game of the Southland Conference Tournament, the Lions posted the second-highest win total (39-21) in school history and equaled their best conference finish (20-13, second overall). Leading the way were conference player and hitter of the year Brock Hebert, relief pitcher of the year Stefan Lopez and freshman of the year Andro Cutura. Lopez was named the 2012 National Stopper of the

Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association after establishing both Southeastern and the Southland’s single-season and career saves records, while he and Hebert each earned four All-America honors. Cutura, who won his final six decisions, was also named a Freshman All-American. Former Lion Wade Miley, a 2009 first-round pick of Arizona, represented the Diamondbacks in the 2012 Major League Baseball All-Star Game and was a finalist for the Na-tional League Rookie of the Year Award. He was honored by the Sporting News as their Rookie of the Year for the National League. In 2011, the Lions garnered national attention as they took two of three games from Florida International to open the season and ended Garrett Wittels attempt to break the Division I consecutive-game hit-streak record. The next weekend Southeastern earned wins over SEC-power Alabama, Central Florida and South Alabama. Artigues was named the LSWA Co-Coach of the Year in 2010 as the Lions set another school first after being nationally ranked at the Division I level. The Lions were nationally ranked for eight straight weeks, reaching as high as No. 17. Southeastern opened the 2010 campaign by winning its first 11 games en route to a school-best 40-19 overall re-cord and 21-12 mark in Southland Conference play. Besides its sweep over Mississippi State, Southeastern also posted a two-game sweep of in-state rival UL-Lafayette as well as wins over South Alabama and Tulane. Prior to becoming the 15th head baseball coach in Southeastern’s history, Artigues spent four seasons at Pearl River Community College where he posted a 168-51 record. The Wildcats won three conference championships and advanced to the JUCO World Series during his tenure. In his final season at PRCC, Artigues led the Wildcats to a school-record 46-12 mark and a No. 1 ranking in the final JUCO national regular-season poll. In his first season at PRCC, Artigues led the Wildcats

to 42 wins and a berth in the JUCO World Series in Mil-lington, Tenn. PRCC finished the year as the South Division Conference Champions, Region XXIII Champions and Central District Champions with Artigues earning Region XXIII and Central District Coach of the Year honors. Before returning to Pearl River In 2001, where he was a two-year letter winner and was a first team All-State and All-Region selection, Artigues spent three seasons at Bossier Parish Community College and posted a 107-57 record. In his final season at BPCC, Artigues led the Cavaliers to a school-record 46 wins and a No. 8 ranking in the final NJCAA poll. Artigues began his coaching career in 1992-93 as an assistant at Spring Hill College where he worked with the team’s hitters and infielders. He served as Dean of Students and head baseball coach at St. Louis Catholic High School in Lake Charles, La., where he led the Saints to the Class 2A state quarterfinals in 1996. Artigues moved to Hammond in 1996 and served as athletic director and head baseball coach at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, leading the Falcons to the 1997 state playoffs. Artigues then moved on to the college ranks accept-ing a job at UNO where he was a volunteer assistant coach in 1998 under Tom Schwaner. As a player, Artigues spent two seasons at PRCC where he was an All-State and All-Region selection. He then went on to play two seasons at Belhaven College where he was an All-Conference selection as a second baseman. Artigues graduated from Belhaven in 1992 with a B.S. in Business Administration and earned a Master’s Degree in Sport Coaching from the United States Sports Academy in 1993. He holds the highest single-season on-base percent-age (.538) and sixth-highest career batting average (.375) in Belhaven history. Artigues and his wife Rachel are the parents of two sons, Christopher “Champ” (13) and Casey (10).

A pioneering railroad town, Hammond, Louisiana, has been a staple of Northshore life since 1830 when

Peter Hammond decided to call a tract of land 55 miles outside of New Orleans home. Hammond was originally from Sweden, and moved to the area to manufacture products from the resin in pine trees, and ship them to New Orleans. Railroad is the reason behind the city’s success, and in 1854, the New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern Railroad pumped people and money into this small, pioneer town. A flag station just a block away from the current train depot was called “Hammond’s Crossing” and brought handfuls of new people to town. Peter Hammond was so convinced that the railroad would bring people to the city that he signed a contract with the rail company that forced the trains to stop every time they passed through Hammond. Five years after the railroad came to town, another staple in Hammond’s past arrived. Charles Emery Cate moved his fam-ily into the area in 1859 from New Orleans because of the natural springs, lush pine for-ests, and desirable climate. Cate immediately began to help the city grow. Cate built a factory, sold crossties, tar, and turpentine as well as laying out city streets and planting oak trees along the curbs. During the Civil War, Cate owned a shoe factory that made and shipped shoes to the

Confederate Army. His factory sent nearly 45,000 shoes to the soldiers before being found by Union Soldiers who destroyed the factory. At the turn of the 20th century, Hammond struck gold—in the form of red. With the development of the strawberry industry, Hammond saw another explosion in growth. The city became a center for growing, processing, and shipping strawberries. Boxcar loads of strawberries became a staple of the area and as trains left the city headed north, the money flowed south. Hammond prospered throughout the rest of the 20th century. Planes began flying into the area and a university came to town. Industry moved in, and with it, more people. As the interstate corridors of I-55 and I-12 developed, Hammond’s footprint did too. People are choosing Hammond because of its close proximity between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Hammond is thirty miles from Baton Rouge, and fifty- five miles from New Orleans. More shops, restaurants, and culture are less than an hour drive. Small town living with big city flare gives Hammond a lifestyle edge.
