2014 Season PreviewDefending Southland Tournament Champions Poised for Another NCAA Tournament Run

With a veteran core and an influx of talented newcomers, the Southeastern Louisiana wom-en’s soccer team heads into the 2014 season eyeing a Southland Conference championship .

The Lady Lions return nine starters from the 2013 squad, which finished 14-4-5 overall, won the Southland Conference Tournament Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history . Highlighting the returning group for Southeastern are a quartet of returning All-Southland Conference performers – sopho-more goalkeeper Hope Sabadash (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada), senior defender Chelsea Villaescusa (Cypress, Calif.), junior defender Erin Christ (Irvine, Calif.) and sophomore for-ward Bri Singh (Lancaster, Calif.) .

Southeastern also returns several other key contributors from last year’s squad . Junior forward Casey Peacock (Douglasville, Ga.), sophomore midfielder/defender Katie Noonan (Renton, Wash.), junior forward Kayla Vera (Vancouver, Wash.), sophomore midfielder Amber Lasher (Norco, Calif.) and junior mid-fielder Cheyenne Maxwell (Sacramento, Calif.) all return to lead the Lady Lions . Sabadash,

Villaescusa and senior defender Jen Babcock (Canton, Mich.) will take over the leadership role as team captains .

“We’re transitioning from a younger team to a team with more experience,” Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle commented . “Many of our key players a season ago were playing their first year of collegiate competition . We’re a more seasoned group heading into the fall .”

In addition to the top returners, Hornbuckle believes that several newcomers will have the opportunity to make an impact . Freshmen midfielders Maggie Ramsey (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Ana Zadro (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada) are expected to be forces from day one . Hornbuckle also spoke highly of fresh-men Lauren Marler (Brandon, Miss.), Maddie Kresevic (Solon, Ohio), Lauren Babcock (Canton, Mich.), Kim Porche (Luling, La.) and Hannah Benton (Madisonville, La.) .

The Lady Lions return 11 of the 12 players that scored goals in 2013 . Singh returns after a freshman season that saw her lead the team with nine goals, while Peacock (seven goals, six assists in 2013) and Vera (three goals, five

assists) also bring starting experience among the forwards .

“We have a lot of great options up top,” Hornbuckle said . “Bri had a great freshman year and we expect her to continue to grow as a player . Casey provides a towering presence up top and Kayla’s speed and talent allows her to cut up defenses . (Junior) Gisenia (Utreras) has great vision and can be very difficult to deal with . (Sophomore) Marisa (Rodrigues) can shoot well with both feet and will be one of the fastest players on the field in every match .”

In the midfield, Southeastern will be looking to replace multi-time All-Southland Conference performer Kelsey Salcido, one of two 2013 seniors . However with Maxwell, Lasher and Noonan all returning the cupboard is far from bare centrally for the defending Southland Conference Tournament champions .

“Cheyenne really asserted herself well in the midfield last season,” Hornbuckle said . “We expect Maggie to come in and be a force cen-trally as well . Katie is a great holding midfielder who we expect to impose her physical pres-ence and Amber is a very talented all-around player . We have some other great options on

the outside that we feel will allow us to be more flexible in other areas on the field .”

On defense, the Lady Lions will look to Jen Babcock to step in to the role vacated by multi-time All-Southland defender and 2013 senior Shanyce Shaw . Babcock joins a staunch group that includes Villaescusa, Christ and Cable and only allowed 16 goals a season ago .

“Chelsea can play anywhere on the back line and Jen made a smooth transition to the back line during the spring,” Hornbuckle said . “All four of our returning backs have great serving ability and mobility . Erin and Alexsis are a great tandem centrally in the back and do a great job organizing us .”

Anchoring the team from the net will be Sabadash, the 2013 Southland Tournament MVP and Southland Freshman of the Year . The Mississauga, Ontario, Canada native finished her first season in goal with a 0 .67 goals against average and nine shutouts . Fellow sophomore Casey Jeanfreau gives the Lady Lions a pair of dependable options in goal .

“Hope has the mentality of wanting to improve every day and as a result she has been a rock in goal for us,” Hornbuckle commented . “She is just going to continue to get better . Casey is a strong keeper who pushes Hope every day in training .”

While Hornbuckle is happy with his roster, he is cognizant that the Southland Conference schedule will provide a tough road for his team to navigate .

“Every Southland Conference match is always a fight,” Hornbuckle said . “There are no easy matches and you have to scratch and claw your way to victory . All it takes is one lapse in focus or one mental error and that can make the difference in the match .”

SLU opens Southland Conference play on Sept . 19, hosting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 4 p .m . at the Southeastern Soccer Complex . The Lady Lions will also host league foes McNeese State (Sept . 21), Central Arkansas (Oct . 10), Sam Houston State (Oct . 26) and Nicholls State (Oct . 31) .

The Lady Lions will travel to face Southland foes Incarnate Word (Sept . 26), Abilene Christian (Sept . 28), Lamar (Oct . 5), Stephen F . Austin (Oct . 17), Northwestern State (Oct . 19) and Houston Baptist (Nov . 2) . The top six teams in the Southland Conference standings will com-pete in the Southland Conference Tournament on Nov . 6-9 in Beaumont, Texas .

“We’re excited about the upcoming season,” Hornbuckle commented . “We’ve put in the work and we’re ready to hit the ground run-ning .”

Blake HornbuckleHead Coach17th Season at Southeastern Louisiana • Maryville (Tenn.) College, 1991 Entering his 17th season at the helm of the Southeastern Louisiana women’s soccer program, Lady Lion head coach Blake Hornbuckle has helped the program establish itself as one of the elite pro-grams in the Southland Conference and the state of Louisiana . A six-time Louisiana Coach of the Year and three-time Southland Conference Coach of the Year, as well as the school’s all-time leader in victories, Hornbuckle has guided Southeastern to NCAA Tour-nament appearances in 2009 and 2013, three South-land Conference tournament titles, five regular-sea-son crowns and nine SLC Tournament championship game appearances . Hornbuckle took over a program that had compiled a 15-40 record before his arrival and has helped Southeastern up their all-time mark to above the .500 mark Hornbuckle’s squad posted a school-record 15 wins in 2003, when the Lady Lions earned their sec-ond straight Southland Conference regular season title and third in the last five seasons . After leading the 2003 squad to a 15-2-4 record and a undefeated 9-0-3 SLC mark, Hornbuckle was named LSWA Coach of the Year for a third time . Hornbuckle guided the Lady Lions to a 12-win season in 2002 . In 2006, he was named SLC Coach of the Year, guiding the team to an 11-4-4 record and 5-0-3 league mark . The Lady Lions’ 2006 league title was its fourth regular season championship in school history . In 2009, the team made its first appearance in the NCAA College Cup with Hornbuckle again earn-

ing LSWA Coach of the Year honors . He repeated as Louisiana’s top coach in 2010 and also earned the same honor from the SLC, as he led the Lady Lions to a Southland regular season title and a school-record tying 15 victories . After Southeastern won the South-land Conference Tournament in 2013 and earned its second NCAA Tournament appearance in school history, Hornbuckle was again named the Louisiana Coach of the Year . Hornbuckle’s success has been evident on the field as he has produced 109 all-conference players, 73 All-Louisiana selections, four conference and Loui-siana players-of-the-year, five conference newcomer-of-the-year, five Louisiana newcomer-of-the-year, four SLC freshmen-of-the year and five Louisiana fresh-men-of-the-year athletes . Among the players under his tutelage were CoSIDA/GTE Academic All-District selection Kim Kwolek, who was named the 1999 recipient of the F .L . McDonald Academic Scholarship, given to the female student-athlete in the Southland Conference with the highest grade point average . In 2009, Dana Mayer earned the F .L . McDonald Post Graduate Scholar-ship and received the President’s Medal for Academic Excellence . In the past six seasons, Southeastern has placed nine student-athletes on the NSCAA All-South Region Scholar teams and earned Team Academic and Ethics Awards in recent seasons . The Lady Lions also excelled in the classroom, as five student-athletes were named to the Southland All-Academic team, led by 2010 Southland Student-Athlete of the Year Kyle MacIn-tosh . Cooper was the first repeat All-Region selection in school history in 2011, while MacIntosh was one of three Southland All-Academic selections and was named an All-South Region Scholar for the second straight season . On December 10, 2013, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Committee on Infractions has accepted summary disposition of the infractions case originally self-reported by Southeastern Louisiana University almost one year prior, largely agreeing to the penalties self-imposed by the university. As a result of an extensive self-investigation, the university self-reported to the NCAA that 137 student-athletes competed without meeting eligi-bility requirements between the academic years of 2005-2006 through 2009-2010, with a majority of the violations occurring in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. Most of the student-athletes failed to meet academic eligibil-ity requirements to compete under NCAA rules. 86 percent of the student-athletes identified in the case went on to gradu-ate from Southeastern or left the university in good academic standing. Athletics staff members responsible for academic advising and eligibility certification during the time of the violations are no longer associated with the university. No current student-athlete at Southeastern partici-pated while ineligible. Southeastern self-imposed penalties include vacating victories in which ineligible student-athletes participated, scholarship reductions, and imposition of a two-year probationary period. The NCAA extended the probationary period to four years and ordered Southeastern to pay a financial penalty of $25,000. The probation terms do not include any postseason bans. Following identification of the infractions, Southeastern has imple-mented corrective actions that include the appointment of an assistant to the president for athletics compliance, the addition of a new compli-

ance coordinator, the implementation of academic tracking software to strengthen the certification process and streamline monitoring, changes in the eligibility certification process to include oversight by institutional offices outside the Athletics Department, enhanced rules training of athletics coaches and staff, and implementation of new procedures to improve academic advising of student-athletes. “We are pleased to put resolution of this case behind us. These infrac-tions occurred years ago, and current coaches, staff and administration are absolutely committed to ongoing compliance with all NCAA rules,” stated Athletics Director Jay Artigues.

Athletic AdministrationAfter a successful eight-season stint as Southeastern

Louisiana University’s head baseball coach, Jay Ar-tigues was named the school’s Director of Athletics

on October 14, 2013 . Named one of the rising head coaches in the college game prior to the 2013 season, Artigues helped build a foundation of success for the Southeastern baseball program and now is doing the same for the entire athletic department . In his first year on the job, he presided over arguably the greatest athletic year in Southeastern history . The Lions and Lady Lions brought home five conference champion-ships, the most the school has ever won in a single year . The Lion football program ran through the Southland Conference with an undefeated record, advanced to the FCS playoffs for the first time, picked up the first playoff win in school history and finished the season with an 11-3 overall record . Lady Lion Soccer won the Southland Conference Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history . The Southeastern men’s track & field program won both the indoor and outdoor Southland Conference titles, marking the first time in school history the Lions had swept through the conference . Lion Baseball continued its run of success, rallying under the leadership of Artigues protege Matt Riser to win the Southland Conference Tournament and advance to an NCAA Regional for the first time in 20 years . Under Artigues, Lion baseball established itself as a growing force in the region by producing three All-Ameri-cans, four Freshman All-Americans, a Capital One Academic All-American, the NCBWA National Stopper of the Year, the Southland Conference’s Player, Hitter, Relief Pitcher and Freshman of the Year, numerous All-Conference and Southland All-Academic players as well as Southeastern single-season and career record holders . In 2012, Southeastern racked up several national,

regional and conference awards . Advancing to the cham-pionship game of the Southland Conference Tournament, the Lions posted a 39-21 record and equaled their best conference finish (20-13, second overall) . Leading the way were conference player and hitter of the year Brock Hebert, relief pitcher of the year Stefan Lopez and freshman of the year Andro Cutura . Lopez was named the 2012 National Stopper of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association after establishing both Southeastern and the Southland’s single-season and career saves records, while he and Hebert each earned four All-America honors . Cutura, who won his final six decisions, was also named a Freshman All-American . Former Lion Wade Miley, a 2009 first-round pick of Arizona, represented the Diamondbacks in the 2012 Major League Baseball All-Star Game and was a finalist for the Na-tional League Rookie of the Year Award . He was honored by the Sporting News as their Rookie of the Year for the National League . In 2011, the Lions garnered national attention as they took two of three games from Florida International to open the season and ended Garrett Wittels attempt to break the Division I consecutive-game hit-streak record . The next weekend Southeastern earned wins over SEC-power Alabama, Central Florida and South Alabama . Artigues was named the LSWA Co-Coach of the Year in 2010 as the Lions set another school first after being nationally ranked at the Division I level . The Lions were nationally ranked for eight straight weeks, reaching as high as No . 17 . Prior to becoming the 15th head baseball coach in Southeastern’s history, Artigues spent four seasons at Pearl River Community College where he posted a 168-51 record . The Wildcats won three conference championships and advanced to the JUCO World Series during his tenure . In his final season at PRCC, Artigues led the Wildcats to a school-record 46-12 mark and a No . 1 ranking in the final JUCO national regular-season poll .

In his first season at PRCC, Artigues led the Wildcats to 42 wins and a berth in the JUCO World Series in Mil-lington, Tenn . PRCC finished the year as the South Division Conference Champions, Region XXIII Champions and Central District Champions with Artigues earning Region XXIII and Central District Coach of the Year honors . Before returning to Pearl River in 2001, where he was a two-year letter winner and was a first team All-State and All-Region selection, Artigues spent three seasons at Bossier Parish Community College and posted a 107-57 record . In his final season at BPCC, Artigues led the Cavaliers to a school-record 46 wins and a No . 8 ranking in the final NJCAA poll . Artigues began his coaching career in 1992-93 as an assistant at Spring Hill College where he worked with the team’s hitters and infielders . He served as Dean of Students and head baseball coach at St . Louis Catholic High School in Lake Charles, La ., where he led the Saints to the Class 2A state quarterfinals in 1996 . Artigues moved to Hammond in 1996 and served as athletic director and head baseball coach at St . Thomas Aquinas High School, leading the Falcons to the 1997 state playoffs . He then moved on to the college ranks accepting a job at UNO where he was a volunteer assistant coach in 1998 under Tom Schwaner . As a player, Artigues spent two seasons at PRCC where he was an All-State and All-Region selection . He then went on to play two seasons at Belhaven College where he was an All-Conference selection as a second baseman . A na-tive of Bay St . Louis, Miss ., he holds the highest single-season on-base percentage ( .538) and sixth-highest career batting average ( .375) in Belhaven history . A 1992 graduate of Belhaven, where he earned a B .S . in Business Administration, Artigues also holds a Master’s Degree in Sport Coaching from the United States Sports Academy (1993) . Artigues and his wife Rachel are the parents of two sons, Christopher “Champ” (15) and Casey (12) .
