After winning the fifth SouthlandConference regular season championship inschool history in 2010, the SoutheasternLouisiana women’s soccer team will onceagain be one of the league favorites in 2011.

The Lady Lions return eight starters from aseason ago, including six student-athletes whorepresented the program on the All-SouthlandConference team. The returning corps plusseveral key newcomers have Southeasternaiming to repeat last season’s success.Southeastern tied a school record for single-season victories, finishing with a 15-3-3 overallrecord and a 7-1-1 mark in conference play.

Southeastern’s 2010 performance backedup a historic 2009 campaign. The Lady Lionsfinished second in the league standings andwon the Southland Conference Tournament. That tournament victory allowed the program tomake its first trip to the NCAA College Cup.

While the previous two seasons saw theLady Lions feature a young team, 2011 will seea Lady Lion squad littered with experiencedperformers. That added experience is one ofthe factors that has Southeastern head coachBlake Hornbuckle optimistic about the upcom-ing season.

“We played with a lot of freshman andsophomores the past two seasons and nowwe’re seeing that group move into their junioryear,” Hornbuckle commented. “We shouldhave a great deal of continuity now that we’vebeen playing together for a couple of years. This is a tight knit group and team camaraderiewill be another strength for us.

“We feel like we have a good group ofsenior leaders, led by Kyle MacIntosh,”Hornbuckle added. “We also feel we’ll be field-ing a more versatile 11 and we’re looking toattack from all areas and positions.”

Chief among the Lady Lions who are mov-ing into their junior year are forwards Maiya

Cooper and Karly Dagys, who represent theleague’s top returning scoring duo. After com-bining to become the top freshmen scoring tan-dem in Division I in 2009, the pair picked upright where they left off in 2010. Both Cooper(11 goals, four assists in 2010) and Dagys (sixgoals, nine assists) were first team All-Southland Conference selections as sopho-mores. Hornbuckle cites the duo’s differentmethods of attack as the reason the pair com-bines so effectively.

“Maiya and Karly are both extremely effec-tive, but cause problems for the opposition indifferent ways,” Hornbuckle said. “Maiya is so

smooth and good on the ball, while Karly justmows through people with her combination ofpower and speed. We’re fortunate to havethese two and their wonderful leadershipskills.”

Hornbuckle also believes that juniorMegan Miller, junior Kerry McWhirter, juniorSam McNally, junior Dana Songe, juniorKailey Mills and freshman Jennifer Marzi

could all provide additional options up top. Inparticular, Hornbuckle is quick to tout theprogress of Miller, who shined during thespring.

“Megan has a chance to have a breakoutseason if the spring is any indication,”Hornbuckle said. “Her development has beenphenomenal. She’s got great speed and agood technical base.”

In the midfield, Southeastern will be look-ing to replace 2010 senior Natalie Santana, athree-time All-Southland performer and theSouthland’s career assists leader. McWhirter(eight assists in 2010), 2010 All-Southland per-former Lauren Stillians (three goals, threeassists) and sophomore Kelsey Salcido willbe looked upon to ease the transition, alongwith junior Tabitha McReynolds, sophomoreJaci Teresinski, sophomore Ann Stranges ,redshirt freshman Tiara Van Zeben, freshmanGabrielle DuBroc and freshman Jen

Babcock.“We feel that Lauren (Stillians) and Kelsey

give us stability in the midfield and we look forboth of them to fill bigger roles for us,”Hornbuckle stated. “Kelsey is a great ball win-ner, while Lauren covers a lot of ground andhas an engine that doesn’t quit. Tabitha has agreat ability to switch the ball.”

Teresinski is one of several players thatcould combine with All-Southland performersMacIntosh and sophomore Shanyce Shaw inthe backfield. The Lady Lions have had theleague’s top scoring defense in each of thepast two seasons, but must replace four-yearstarters Brittany Prieto and Nicole

Brannigan. MacIntosh, Shaw, Teresinski,Marzi and junior Kalyn Tanner could all seetime on the back line.

“We’re going to have a group of backs thatwill have more of an attacking mentality,”Hornbuckle said. “Kyle’s our stabilizing forcewith her talents and experience, while weexpect Shanyce to build on an excellent fresh-man year. Jaci will see time at every position. She’s so strong and plays with such passionthat she’ll be a key part of our attack.”

Southeastern features a talented goal-keeper tandem. Senior Lacey Bockhaus

returns as the starter, having earned SouthlandConference Player of the Year honors aftertying her own school record with a 0.64 goalsagainst average in 2010 and enters her finalseason with the conference’s career standardfor shutouts. Junior Cassie Northrup is alsoready to step in if needed.

“Lacey’s been dominant for us,”Hornbuckle said. “Her blend of athleticism andleadership has made her invaluable to ourteam. Cassie is also extremely talented. She’sgood off the ground and a good communicator. We’re very fortunate to have her and weexpect her to continue to improve with moretraining and match experience.”

While Hornbuckle heads into the 2011campaign with a positive outlook, the 14th-yearhead coach knows to be leery of the alwayscompetitive Southland Conference schedule.

“We know Southland Conference play willbe a battle as always,” Hornbuckle comment-ed. “When we get into league play, you canthrow out the records. You have to be focusedand ready at all times, because a five-minutespan can determine the entire season.”

Bart Bellairs was named the 15th

Director of Athletics at Southeastern

Louisiana University on Nov. 24,

2009 after serving in the same capacity at

Savannah State University.

A former senior athletics administrator at

Virginia Military Institute, Bellairs succeeds

Joel Erdmann, who took a similar position

at South Alabama.

At Southeastern, Bellairs will oversee 15

NCAA Division I affiliated programs that

compete in the Southland Conference.

Since joining the Southland in 1997, the

Lions have captured 22 regular-season or

tournament championships, including four

regular-season titles in women’s soccer,

three in women’s tennis, three in men’s golf

and two in men’s basketball. Southeastern

also claimed the Southland Men’s All-

Sports Trophy in 2008-09, highlighted by

the 2009 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

championship with the women’s soccer

team earning its first-ever berth to the

NCAA Championships.

Prior to his move to Hammond, Bellairs

was at Savannah State, an NCAA Division

I program, with 15 teams, since July 2008.

There he implemented an academics suc-

cess plan that included an academic “road

map” for each student-athlete from regis-

tration to graduation. He developed a Title

IX/Gender Equity program that involved

reworking the athletic budget to resolve

long-time problems with staffing, facilities

and scholarships. During his tenure at

Savannah State, football, men’s basket-

ball, softball and women’s volleyball teams

all saw significant improvement in season-

al wins.

Prior to joining Savannah State, Bellairs

served as senior associate director of inter-

collegiate athletics from 2005 to 2008 and

head basketball coach from 1993 to 2005

at VMI in Lexington, Va. Responsibilities

included marketing and promotions, ticket

operations, management of the licensing

program and serving as director for all key

athletic facilities. There he created new

pricing strategies, athletic department pro-

motions and new revenue streams. As

head basketball coach, he was named the

Southern Conference Coach of the Year,

the Virginia Coach of the Year and the

“Sports Illustrated” Unknown Coach of the

Year.

Bellairs also served as assistant basket-

ball coach at James Madison University in

Harrisonburg, Va., from 1988 to 1993,

where his teams saw one NCAA tourna-

ment appearance and five NIT appear-

ances; as assistant basketball coach at the

University of Massachusetts (1986-1988);

assistant basketball coach at the University

of Maryland (1984-1986); and head bas-

ketball coach, head cross country coach

and assistant baseball coach at Wilkes

College in Wilkes Barre, Pa. (1983-1985).

He holds a Master of Science degree in

physical education and athletics adminis-

tration from Western Illinois University and

a Bachelor of Arts degree in

sociology/social work from Warren Wilson

College in Asheville, N.C. Bellairs and his

wife Jacki have five children.

Opened in 2002, the Southeastern SoccerComplex provides the Lady Lions with one of the top facili-ties in the Southland Conference and the state ofLouisiana.

Located on the university’s North Campus, the1,000-seat facility features a digital LED scoreboard and atop-of-the-line sound system. In addition to being used forSoutheastern matches and practices, the SoutheasternSoccer Complex also hosts several camps throughout thearea. The field has also given the Lady Lions a definite“home-field” advantage, as Southeastern has recorded a51-22-10 record in its nine seasons playing at the facility.

“The opening of the Southeastern Soccer Complexwas a big step in the right direction for our program,” headwomen’s soccer coach Blake Hornbuckle said. “The fieldhas a great root system and is one of the better playingsurfaces in the area. With a few added amenities, we willhave a first-class facility that the community and universitycan enjoy, that provides a showcase for North Campus andaids the future of our program.”

The newest additions to the facility are on-line forthe 2009 season. A new permanent structure that coversthe benches and press area, as well as serves as a filmtower has been added.

One of the nicer features is the grassy berm locat-ed on the left side of the Southeastern Soccer Complexentrance. During Lady Lion home games, Southeasternstudents and fans are known to bring their lawn chairs andblankets to enjoy the view from the berm. Plans for addinga second berm on the right side are in place.

In its inaugural season, the Southeastern SoccerComplex played host to the 2002 Southland ConferenceTournament, marking the first time Southeastern had host-ed a SLC postseason event. Southeastern also served asthe host site for the 2004 and 2005 SLC Tournaments.

In recent years, one of the priorities ofSoutheastern Athletics has been the improvement and ren-ovation of the teams’ facilities. The Southeastern SoccerComplex is a prime example of that priority. In 2004, a con-crete entrance way has been laid, as well as a concretepad for the benches and press row area.

The Southeastern Soccer Complex, opened in 2002, has become one of the finest facilities in the region.
