i. ¿Qué aprendí en este taller?
ii.

no acumular trabajo innecesariamente. La presentación es importante; debe ser
preparado y organizado profesionalmente.
secciones debidamente organizadas y rotuladas.

1. Attendance and punctuality: Attendance is mandatory, and being punctual reflects a
professional ethic. The facilitator will register the student’s performance for both in
every workshop, and at the end of the course. The facilitator will evaluate each student
with the rubric in Appendix A.
2. Class participation and contribution: All students are expected to attend class
prepared to discuss workshop topics (readings, assigned questions, study cases, etc.),
and to actively participate in class. The Facilitator will evaluate the student’s overall
class participation, at the end of the course. They will use Appendix A; taking into
consideration the degree of participation, if it shows the student’s degree of preparation
for class, and how much this participation contributed to the class’ development. The
student will self-assess his/her participation through the Daily Journal. Class
participation throughout the course should be both in English and Spanish.
3. Course portfolio: Each student must prepare a course portfolio, where he/she will
reflect on course topics and development. It is important that all students work on their
portfolio; beginning the first week of class, and keeping it up-to-date. They should also
bring it to class for discussion and Facilitator review. The Portfolio will be evaluated by
the Facilitator; using Appendix B, and it should include the following sections:
a. Class Diary: After each workshop, students will include in his/her diary the
answers to the following questions:
i. What did I learn in this workshop?
ii. What was the workshop’s most interesting topic? Why?
iii. How did I contribute to class?
iv. What contribution from my fellow students impressed me the most? Why?
v. What did I not understand? What doubts do I have?
The class diary may be written in the language of the workshop.
b. News Analysis: It is important for all students to apply the concepts and
methods discussed in class to their personal or professional life, and to
the analysis of current social events. Thus, students are required to regularly
read newspapers, magazines, and journals, watch television or radio news, in
order to select a minimum of two (2) news reports that are directly related with
the concepts or topics discussed in class the previous week. Students
SOSC 103: Introducción a las Ciencias Sociales (Compendio) 16

must include the selected news in their portfolio and answer the following
questions:
i. To what concept or topic is this news related?
ii. What is the relationship between this news and the topics
discussed in class?
iii. How do the topics or concepts discussed in class help me
understand this news?
The news selected and the answers to these questions must be in the
language that was used in the previous workshop.
c. Weekly Assignments: Every student must include in the portfolio a copy of
the assignments required throughout this module. Every student must bring all
written assignments to class. The Facilitator will return the assignments in the
next class, so that the student may revise, correct or improve these
assignments, based on Facilitator’s comments and what
was learned in class Assignments must be prepared in the language of
the workshop.
d. One-minute paper (Appendix C): The student will complete and turn it in to
the Facilitator at the end of the workshop. One-minute paper should be
answer in the workshop language.
e. Final Course Assessment: Every student will evaluate the course, self-
assess his/her participation in the course and decide whether course
objectives were met. Every student will evaluate whether the GENERAL
OBJECTIVES were met by answering the following questions:
i. Summarize in a short paragraph what you have achieved or learned
about each objective.
ii. What else would you have liked to learn about this objective?
iii. What suggestions do you have for the next time the course is offered?
The Final Course Assessment may be prepared either in English or Spanish.

Note: The Course Portfolio should be turned in the last week of class. However, the
students should begin preparing the portfolio, as the course develops; to avoid
accumulating work unnecessarily. The appearance of the portfolio is important; it must
be well organized and professionally prepared (Appendix B). It must include all of the
sections explained above, with appropriate labeling. Use Arial font, Size 12, whenever
possible.
4. Special Reports: During the first week, each student will choose a topic from the
Special Reports (Appendix D) to write a paper, no less than 8 pages to turn in on
Workshop Three. It is recommended to use Arial 12, space and a half. Appendix D
includes the topics for the Special Reports and the minimun information required
preparing them. The facilitator can suggest other topics in his/her syllabus or in the
second workshop. The student will choose the language for this paper. Appendix E
will be use to evaluate this paper.
5. Final Project: On the first week the class will be divided into groups of no more than
five (5) students. Each group will choose a topic (problem or situation) from
Antropology, Sociology, Phycology, Ecomomy or Political Sciences that have an
impact on our families, community or society, and will apply the scientific method to
understand it better. The oral presentation should have a format like a news
documentary (“60 Minutes” from channel ABC or 20/20 from channel CBS). The
group will prepare a written report to turn in at workshop five. All members of the
group must participate in the preparation of the written report which include the
following:
a. The description of the topic (problem or situation) and the justification on
why you choose that topic.
b. The methology used: explaining how you apply every step of the scientific
method and what was the result.
c. The result and conclusions obtained after applying the scientific method to
the situation or problem.
d. The vision of the group of what would or could happen in relation with the
particular problem or situation, based on the scientific analysis, result and
conclusions.

The schedule for preparing this project is:
a. First week: Groups are formed. The students of each group should
indicate how and when they can be contacted and agree what day the
group can start to work in the final project.
b. Second week or before: Groups present a proposed topic to be
discussed to the Facilitator. The proposal should explain the topic chosen,
why it was chosen, and how it will be presented. The topic should be
related to one of the topics discussed in the course. The Facilitator will be
available at any time.
c. Fifth week: Each group will have 30 minutes to give their oral presentation.
The presentations should be interesting and impact the rest of the class.
The group will turn in the written report.
The Facilitator will evaluate the written report (Appendix E), and the oral presentation
(Appendix F). Each member of the group will evaluate the contribution made by the
rest of the group members to the group’s work (Appendix G).

Description of course policies
1. Attendance at all class sessions is mandatory. If the Facilitator excuses an
absence, the student must make up for all presentations, papers, or other
assignments due on the date of the absence. The Facilitator will have the final
decision on approval of absences. He/she reserves the right to accept or reject
assignments past due, and to adjust the student’s grade accordingly.
2. Oral presentations and special activities cannot be remade. If the student provides
a valid and verifiable excuse (ex. medical or from a court), he/she will be
summoned for a written test on the activity in which he/she did not attend.
3. The course is conducted in an accelerated format and requires that students
prepare in advance for each workshop according to the course module. Each
workshop requires at least ten hours of preparation.
4. It is expected that all written work will be solely that of the student and should not
be plagiarized. That is, the student must be the author of all work submitted. All
quoted or paraphrased material must be properly cited, with credit given to its
author or publisher. It should be noted that plagiarized writings are easily
detectable and students should not risk losing credit for material that is clearly not
their own.
5. If the Facilitator makes changes to the study guide, such changes should be
discussed with the students during the first workshop. Changes agreed upon
should be indicated in writing and given to the students and to the program
administrator.
6. The facilitator will establish the means and way of contact with the students.
7. The use of cellular phones is prohibited during sessions.
8. Children or family members are not allowed to the classrooms.
9. Workshops will be facilitated in English and Spanish in alternate days, in keeping
with the format established in this module. Students may interact and ask
questions in the language of their preference, but generally it is expected that they
use the language of the specific assignment. Each course will have an equal
balance of Spanish and English usage.

This course includes topics and general knowlege of interest to all students. It also
incorporates those topics, which allow the analysis of the meanings and implications of
current events, and gives students the ability to recognize their importance, within their
personal and professional life. This requires the open participation of everyone in the
class, and the constant expression of their ideas and opinions; which could be conflictive
or controversial. The students must respect everyone’s opinions, perceptions and beliefs,
in order to guarantee the active participation of everyone.

Teaching Philosophy and Methodology
This course is grounded in the learning theory of Constructivism. Constructivism is a
philosophy of learning founded on the premise that, by reflecting on our experiences, we
construct our own understanding of the world in which we live.
Each of us generates our own “rules” and “mental models,” which we use to make
sense of our experiences. Learning, therefore, is simply the process of adjusting our
mental models to accommodate new experiences. As teachers, our focus is on making
connections between facts and fostering new understanding in students. We will also
attempt to tailor our teaching strategies to student responses and encourage students to
analyze, interpret and predict information.
There are several guiding principles of constructivism:
1. Learning is a search for meaning. Therefore, learning must start with the issues
around which students are actively trying to construct meaning.
2. Meaning requires understanding wholes as well as parts. And parts must be
understood in the context of wholes. Therefore, the learning process focuses on
primary concepts, not isolated facts.
3. In order to teach well, we must understand the mental models that students use to
perceive the world and the assumptions they make to support those models.
4. The purpose of learning is for an individual to construct his or her own meaning,
not just memorize the "right" answers and regurgitate someone else's meaning.
Since education is inherently interdisciplinary, the only valuable way to measure
learning is to make the assessment part of the learning process, ensuring it
provides students with information on the quality of their learning.
5. Evaluation should serve as a self-analysis tool.
6. Provide tools and environments that help learners interpret the multiple
perspectives of the world.
7. Learning should be internally controlled and mediated by the learner.

Tareas a realizar antes del Taller Uno
¿cómo van a reaccionar?

actividad “Estudiar a Juanito”.
Filosofía estudian a Juanito. El grupo se distribuirá los personajes para
representarlos ante el salón.
a Juanito.

Assignments before Workshop Four
1. Select two (2) news reports that are directly related with the concepts discussed on
the last workshop and answer the questions specified on the study guide.
2. Review the definition of economy developed on the first workshop. Define the
following economic concepts: ecomomic problem, scarcity, economic resources,
necessities, production, goods and services. Reflect about, at least, one situation
where is necessary the use of scarce resources to produce something to help satisfy
some necessities. Identify an example of this on the following situations: personal,
family, community, work place, or in the society. You should be prepared to discuss
this in class.
3. Using the resources recommended for the workshop, find and analyze the definitions
to the following key economic concepts: microeconomics, macroeconomics, demand,
supply, price, inflation, unemployment and recession. After analyzing those concepts
and their definitions, prepare the following written assignment for discussion:
i. What is the difference between microeconomics and macroeconomics?
Give an example of each.
ii. How do demand and supply interact to affect the price of goods and
services? Give an example of how a price rises and how it falls.
iii. What is the difference between inflation and unemployment and what
causes them? How do governments intervene to lower inflation or
unemployment?
4. Prepare and bring to class a product or service you want to “sell” to the rest of the
group during The Market Game to be played during the second workshop. Follow
these recommendations to insure that you will be a successful player in The Market
Game.
a. Make sure that it is a product that will be attractive to the rest of the
students. Some suggestions include food, beverages, school supplies or
materials and simple crafts. You can also provide a service to the rest of
the group.
b. Remember that it is a game, so make it attractive but simple.
SOSC 103: Introducción a las Ciencias Sociales (Compendio) 37

Prep. 04/01/05 Luis Zayas Seijo
c. Prepare as much or as little as you can and you think will sell.
d. Prepare a cardboard advertisement or flyer that briefly describes your
product. The advertisement should include descriptions of:
1. Why the product meets the needs of the rest of the class
2. The resources you used: who made it, what materials you used
and how much you invested
3. How you prepared the product
e. Decide and set the price you want to sell your product. Consider the
quantity of the product you will be supplying to class and how much
demand you think it will have.
Activities
1. Students will be asked to share with the class their examples of the news analysis or
their comments from their journal.
2. The Facilitator will lead a class discussion of the definitions on assingment two. The
students will be divided into groups no more than five (5) to choose one of their
examples about how scarce resources help satisfy some necessities. Each group will
present to the class their examples.
3. Students will be asked to share their examples of the definitions on assignment two.
4. The class will become “Mercado El Centro” as they play “The Market Game”. The
procedures and rules for playing the game are:
a. The Facilitator will distribute play money (available in the administrative offices)
to all class participants. The money will not be distributed equally. The
Facilitator will prepare packages of money of three different amounts and
distribute randomly among selected class members. A different amount will be
distributed for each of the following groups: the “Mores”, the “Somes”, and the
“Littles”. Both the Facilitator and each student will take note of the amount of
money received. The Facilitator will keep some money.
b. Each member of the class will have an opportunity to present his/her product
and state the price.
SOSC 103: Introducción a las Ciencias Sociales (Compendio) 38
Universidad del Este, Universidad Metropolitana, Universidad del Turabo
Prep. 04/01/05 Luis Zayas Seijo
c. The students will have an opportunity to buy and sell the products without
Facilitator intervention. They may buy what they want to buy, raise or lower
prices and promote their products among themselves.
d. After a predetermined time has elapsed, the Facilitator will declare a market
recess. During this market recess each student will:
i. Count his/her money and determine whether he/she has changed
groups (Mores, Somes, Littles) based on the amount of money
they have.
ii. Reflect on whether he/she changed prices to sell the product and
decide whether to keep or change the price after the recess.
He/she will briefly summarize in writing why yes or why not the
price has or will be changed.
iii. Reflect and write what he/she should have done to have sold more
of the product and have more money.
e. The Facilitator will reopen The Market Game by announcing that one of the
two things will happen:
i. A tax will be imposed on every member of the class. The tax will be
different on each of the groups: a greater amount for the Mores, a

ii. An additional amount of money will be distributed to every
member of the class. The money distributed will be different for
each group: a greater amount for the Littles and a smaller
amount for the Mores.
f. Again, the students will have an opportunity to buy and sell the products
without Facilitator intervention. They may buy what they want to buy, raise or
lower prices and promote their products among themselves. They may also
resell what they had previously bought from other students.
g. The Facilitator will decide when to declare another market recess. Each
student will repeat what he/she did during the first recess. In addition, each
student will reflect and write:

i. How the tax or the additional amount distributed after the last recess
affected what they bought and their products price.
ii. Whether anyone started reselling the product he/she was selling and
if so, how the competition affected the price.
h. The Facilitator will reopen The Market Game with a new announcement that
will be the opposite of the first. Students will have an opportunity to buy and
sell products until a new market recess is declared.
i. The students will repeat the last market recess activities.
j. The Facilitator may reopen the market and declare recess as often as he
wants from that point on. Every time the Facilitator reopens, he/she will make
an announcement of tax, additional income or neither one. The Facilitator may
also decide any distribution he wants of any announced tax or income (for
example, tax the Somes more or give a greater amount of income to the
Mores).
k. After at least four (4) market recesses, the Facilitator will declare the market
closed. No more buying, selling or use of the products will occur until the
Facilitator announces the winners of the game.
l. After the market closes, each student will compare how much money and
product he/she has compared to the start of the game. Each student will
analyze how the amount of product and money fluctuated throughout the game
and what factors were responsible for that change. After this reflection, each
student will answer in writing the following questions:
i. What did I do right?
ii. What did I do wrong? What should I have done differently? What
could have prevented me from doing what I needed to do differently?
m. The students will include all reflections and written comments from The Market
Game as part of their portfolio.

5. The Facilitator will lead a class discussion on student experiences during The Market
Game, encouraging them to share their reflections during each recess and after the
market closing. The general discussion should conclude with class
answers to the following questions (and others included by the Facilitator as
needed) as well as a review of all concepts assigned for this workshop:
a. What determines the price of goods and services in the market? How does
supply affect the price? How does demand affect the price?
b. How does intervention affect the price of goods and services in the market?
What type of intervention raises prices? What type of intervention lowers
prices?
c. Was there a general increase in most prices at any point in he game? Was
there a point in the game when more students found themselves without a
product to sell or with few students able or interested in buying?
d. How did The Market Game demonstrate each one of the concepts
assigned for this workshop?
6. The Facilitator will announce the winners of the game: the 10% of the students with
more money at the end of the game. The prize for the winners will be that they will
decide how to distribute any products or services left on the market. The winners will
meet briefly and decide on the distribution. They will announce the distribution to the
rest of the class. After the announcement:
a. Every student will write on his/her diary how he/she feels about the winners’
decision and what he/she would like to do about it.
b. The losers will meet to decide what to do, if anything, regarding the
announcement. They will meet in three groups: Littles, Somes and Mores.
The winners will meet to plan their reaction to any anticipated actions by
the losers.
c. Winners and the three loser groups will announce their decisions. The
Facilitator will insure that civil behavior prevails and decide what the
winners and losers will be able to do.
