The singers of a classic Georgian song should possess highly specific skills and are required to know the complex canons which were passed from one generation to another. These canons form a distinctive music school.

The barbarous invasions of Mongols as well as Turkish and Persian wars in XIII century ended the Golden Age of Georgia. Its rich cultural life which flourished before during the Queen Tamar times was brought into decay. Throughout the centuries only several examples of ancient musical culture could reach us.

Only several examples of classic Georgian Polyphony with its music dialects – Svan, Mingrelian, Gurian, Kakhetian reached our times.

I chose several songs which are specific for this ethnographic background.

In Georgia, it is primarily the men who do the singing. A typical Georgian song is sung as a cappella by men, in three voices.

In Georgian culture polyphonic singing has been preserved as a vital part of the national identity.
