SNOW WHITE GLOSSARY OF TERMSFollywood Movie Lingo: How to Talk as if You Belong on a Film Set

Action: The director or assistantdirector is in charge of calling“Action!” It means the cameras arerolling and acting can begin.

Boom: A boom microphone is amicrophone attached to a pole. Theboom operator holds the pole withattached mic above or below theactors’ heads, being careful not toenter the frame of the shot.

Cut: “Cut!” is called by the director to stop filming and acting.

Foley Artist: A Foley artist isresponsible for creating all of thesound effects used in a radiobroadcast or film. Foley artists arenamed after Jack Foley, a pioneer offilm sound effects. Jack Foley is credited with inventing the “art of Foley”.

Hays Commission: The Motion Picture Production Code, originally known asthe Hays Code was a set of rules for movie-making. The code enforced moralityand wholesomeness in movie-making.

In the Can: A term for when the filming of a whole movie or several shots of amovie are finished.

Key Grip: The key grip is the chief lighting and rigging technician on a film set.The key grip may be in charge of a crew of grips including dolly grips, craneoperators, and camera car operators. Being a key grip takes physical strength andthey are often the strongest people on a movie set.

Production Assistant: Often known as a PA, the Production Assistant isresponsible for any odd job needed on the set. A PA is a valuable part of the movie-making team, but is often a low person on the totem pole.

RCA 44 Ribbon: Ribbon microphones were invented in the early 1920s andgained popularity in 1931. A ribbon microphone picks up sound from all sides.The invention greatly improved the sound technology used at the time.

Rolling: Usually the assistant director calls “Rolling!” to let everyone know thatsound and film are ready and the action can be started.

Slate: A slate is a small chalkboard on which a scene number is written. The slate isheld up in front of the camera and “clapped” at the beginning of each scene so thatthe scene number is recorded on film.

Hollywood movies) as “The Silver Screen”?

The phrase comes from the actual screenson which movies used to be projected. In

the 1920s the motion picture industryused a type of screen called a “silverlenticular screen” to project movies.

This screen was highly reflective, with asurface covered by metallic paint or with

silver embedded in the material of thescreen. It is now being used again to

project 3-D films.

PRYANIKI RECIPE(Russian Honey-Spice Cookies with Jam)Ingredients3 cups flour1/8 tsp. salt1 tsp. baking soda1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon1/2 tsp. ground cardamom1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg1/4 tsp. ground allspice2 egg yolks1/2 cup sugar1 tsp. vanilla1 cup honeyThick berry jamOptional:1/2 cup powdered sugar

Method• Preheat the oven to 350 degrees (F). • Sift the flour, salt and baking soda into a bowl and stir in the spices.• Melt the honey until it is liquid and stir in the vanilla. Set aside to cool slightly.• Put the egg yolks and sugar together in a bowl and whisk until light-colored and

thick. Stir the honey into the egg mixture.• Stir the egg/honey mixture into the flour and spices to form a stiff dough. Cover

and refrigerate for an hour (or overnight).• Take approximately one tablespoon of dough and roll into a ball on a lightly

floured surface. Flatten the dough and place 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. of jam into themiddle. Pinch the edges of the round together to enclose the jam. Roll gently onlightly floured surface to shape into a ball. If the jam squirts out, try using a littleless jam.

• Bake 10-12 minutes at 350 degrees until cookies are nicely browned. Rotate trayhalfway through baking. Cool for 2 minutes on cookie sheet, then remove torack to cool completely.

ToppingThe cookies can be served plain, dusted with sifted powdered sugar, or iced with

a glaze of powdered sugar thinned with water.

A member of the Dramatist’s Guild, Kathryn has had ten plays producedprofessionally and two plays published with the Dramatic Publishing Company.Her play Arthur’s Stone, Merlin’s Fire has been produced in high schools andcommunity theaters around the country. Last year’s Panto, Cinderella, wasnominated for thirteen Barrymore awards and won four. As an actress, she is amember of the Actors’ Equity Association and has appeared in over sixtyproductions regionally. She has been awarded the Emerging Artist Award fromThe Princess Grace Foundation and has been nominated for Philadelphia’s BestActress Barrymore for the role of Jill in Jack & Jill. Recent roles have been Daya inNathan the Wise at People’s Light and Barbara in Iron Kisses at Act II Playhouse.She is an Artistic Associate at People’s Light and has been a member of the residentcompany for over twenty years. Kathryn is an Assistant Professor of Theater atArcadia University and is currently pursuing an MFA in Playwriting at TempleUniversity.

His work has been produced at the Arden Theatre Company(Baby Case – winner of four Barrymore Awards including Outstanding Music andBest Musical of the Year – and Café Puttanesca), The Wilma Theater, and 1812Productions in Philadelphia; The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts inWashington, D.C.; the City Theatre in Pittsburgh, PA; the Horizon Theater inAtlanta, GA; the Diversionary Theater in San Diego, CA; Theater LaB inHouston, TX; and Radio City Music Hall in New York, NY. HISTORYNow in our 35th season, the People’s Light & Theatre Company is a non-

profit, professional theatre founded in 1974 by Danny Fruchter, Meg Fruchter,Ken Marini, and Dick Keeler. These artists were committed to making theatrerooted in service to the community with artists who lived in the community.Today, this founding principle remains central to People’s Light through ourmission and programming. Our mission is to make plays drawn from manysources to entertain, inspire and engage our community. We hope that theseplays and programs bring people together and provide opportunities forreflection, discovery and celebration.

We extend our mission through arts education programs that excitecuriosity about and deepen understanding of the world around us. Our artistic

ensemble engages in significantcommunity collaboration andcontinues to make connections withnew audiences through our nationallyrecognized arts education program,Project Discovery. This programserves 30,000 young people each yearthrough in-school residencies, studentmatinees that bring students from 20high schools to the theatre twice each

year for free, special projects tailored to specific youth communities, and ayear-round Theatre School for both young people and adults. We house guestartists in a restored 18th-century farmhouse that includes a banquet room thatcan be rented for special events, as well as a bistro, Places! Total communityserved is nearly 85,000 annually. Our $5 million annual budget employs 70full and permanent part-time artists and staff members and almost 200additional guest artists.

People’s Light has always made its home in Chester County. In 1979 theTheatre moved to our current seven-acre site in Malvern, which includes two blackbox theatres with 375 and 180 seats, respectively. We produce seven to nine playsper season, mixing world premieres, contemporary plays, and fresh approaches toclassic texts for our 6-Play Series and Family Discovery Series. The Theatrecontinues to be recognized nationally for commissioning new plays; of the 338productions we have mounted over the course of our 35-year history, 122 wereworld/regional premieres, over one-third of our production output. Recentcommissions that have received world-premiere performances at People’s Lightwere Y York’s adaptation of Jerry Spinelli’s Eggs, Russell Davis’ The Day of thePicnic, the adaptation and translation of Luigi Pirandello’s Six Characters in Searchof an Author by company member Louis Lippa; Playwright Russell Davis’adaptation of Crispin: The Cross of Lead by Avi; and Y York’s adaptation of GettingNear to Baby by Audrey Couloumbis which was just remounted at Childsplay inTempe, Arizona and soon to be produced at Seattle Children’s Theatre.

Notable past productions include Lou Lippa’s two-part, six-hour adaptationof Theodore Dreiser’s Sister Carrie, Karen Sunde’s Achilles: A Kabuki Play (bothworld premieres), and The Gospel at Colonus by Bob Telson and Lee Breuer.American premieres include: Edward Kemp’s translation of Gotthold Lessing’sNathan the Wise, David Hare’s adaptation of Brecht’s The Life of Galileo, GrimmTales, Beauty and the Beast, and More Grimm Tales from London’s Young Vic.Our productions have toured as close to home as Philadelphia (Holes at theKimmel Center in 2005) and as far away as Mexico, Budapest, and Cyprus.
