Specialising in fire and smoke engineering solutions for the construction and industrial, Smoke

and Fire curtains, GELEC is the world-wide supplier and installer. Automatic smoke / fire

curtains are an essential safety component, designed to protect life and help save lives, by

containing and stopping the spread of superheated fire and noxious gases.

For this reason GELEC Smoke / Fire curtains are always deployed by gravity and every time the

system is tested; thus all GELEC curtains are completely “Gravity Fail Safe”, and incorporate the

latest electronic technology, making them the most advanced, cost effective solution in today’s

market in terms of smoke and fire control. All GELEC Smoke and Fire curtains are manufactured

in accordance with BS EN ISO 9001 certification and meet the full requirements of European Fire

and Safety regulations.

Operation

Under normal conditions the curtain is retracted in the head box and is held in position by the electronics contained within

a remote enclosure mounted on the motor end of the box. The bottom bar will be resting against the under side of the box

or below the box if a stopping bar is installed, the stopping bar will then rest against the box.

In the event of a fire condition or operation of the test key switch the group control panel removes the power to the curtain

motors. The curtain descends in a controlled manner under the power of gravity and stops in the lower position when all

the fabric is unwound from the roller. When the signal is reset the group control panel re-connects the power to the

motors which will retract the curtains to the up position.

Should the mains power fail to the group control panel the supply is automatically switched to the integral standby

battery. The curtain remains in the retracted position, and the curtain will remain fully operational until the battery low

voltage cut off facility reads a voltage of 21V, the curtains will then descend under the power of gravity to the

operational position.

Options Available

 Two stage descent facilities

Powder coating in any standard RAL colour

 Manual override for emergency egress

 Audio and visual warnings

Manual reset with stand-alone smoke detector

When a curtain is required to deploy in an emergency situation it is probable that the mains supply to the control panel may

have already failed and that the cables linking the fire curtains to the control panel might become damaged. Under these

circumstances with no power available the fire curtain will have to deploy by gravity.

A test in which a curtain is powered down under normal test conditions are only proving that they can deploy when powered.

This does not confirm an ability to fail safe.

Mains Supply: 230v AC 50Hz Mains supply required each panel

position.

Fire Alarm Interface: Pair of clean contacts per fire zone. GCP’s can be

interlinked. Should a zone of curtains require to

be activated by more than 1 smoke zone the fire

alarm contacts can be wired in series.

Motors: 24v AC/DC supply from GCP. A loop of 2.5mm² 2

core and earth cable with a maximum loop length of

100m should be installed. If a greater loop length

is required the installer should ensure that the

supply voltage will not fall below the 24v required.

Battery: 2 x 7 aph rechargeable

Fire Signal: Open on fire – configured to be fail safe

Test Facility: Key Switch

Indication: Green LED = Mains Healthy

Yellow LED = Battery Fault

Green LED = Fire alarm Status Normal

Panel Size: 396mm High x 334mm Wide x 105mm Deep

MOTOR CONTROL CIRCUIT

Enclosure: 145mm H x 250mm W x 50mm D Installation: Fix onto the Motor End of the Head Box

Operation of the automatic curtains is carried out via a Group Control Panel. Each GCP is capable of controlling up to

6 no. of 24v motor assemblies. In normal operating conditions the GCP will provide a 24v AC supply to the curtain

motors and the curtains will be held in the retracted condition. Should smoke be detected, the fire alarm contact in the

GCP will be opened by the fire alarm control system, the GCP will remove the 24v supply to the curtain motors and the

curtains will descend under the power of gravity in a controlled manner. As soon as the fire alarm system is reset the

GCP will reinstate the 24v supply to the curtain motors and the curtains will retract. Current limiting circuits will detect

when the curtain has fully retracted and the supply voltage to the motor will step down to a holding voltage. Each GCP

will be supplied with a 24v 7aph battery, this will enable full control of the system should the mains power fail. The

battery voltage will be monitored, upon the voltage reaching 85% of the nominal charge it shall be disconnected and the

curtains will deploy under gravity at a controlled speed.

CURTAIN ROLLER 70mm diameter x 1.2mm octagonal steel tube. 76mm diameter x 4mm circular steel tube.

Fire Curtain Type “G1K4” The G1K4 Automatic Fire Curtain is fully certified to BS: 476 Part 22, the entire system has a rating of 270 minutes (4-1/2 hours) at 1000

0C and over.

The integral tubular motor and the motor control circuit together provide a current limiting facility for the upper curtain position and back EMF generation for the controlled fail safe descent under gravity The fabric used in the manufacture of the G1K4 curtains is a wire reinforced polymer coated glass cloth with a nominal weight of 520-600 g/m

2. All curtains are sewn together using

stainless steel thread. The head box is manufactured from 18 s.w.g galvanised steel, the box can be powder coated to any standard RAL finish. The bottom bar is manufactured from mild steel angle with an overall dimension of 42 mm. The “T” bar can be powder coated to any standard RAL finish. Fire curtain systems require side guides to provide a seal between the curtain fabric and the structure of the building. A fire will cause either positive or negative pressures, these pressures can cause a curtain to act like a sail and pull the curtain fabric out of the side guides. GELEC have introduced a fabric retaining system to prevent this occurring. The side guides are manufactured from 18 s.w.g galvanised steel with dimensions of 100 mm D x 50 mm W. Powder coating is available as an optional extra.

Smoke Curtain Type “G1K1” The ‘G1K1’ Automatic Smoke Curtain is fully certified to BS: 7346 part 3 and EN12101-1, the entire system is able to withstand 1000 cycle of operation without damage to the curtain fabric, also the primary energy source is reliable in operation over 1000 cycles with unchanged regarding to cycle times or operation speeds. In addition, the leakage rate of ‘G1K1’ Automatic Smoke Curtain is less than 25m

3/h per m

2 at 25 Pa.

The fabric of one hour fire rating is generally used for smoke curtains, which are manufactured from 400 - 440 grams per square metre with a micronised aluminium polymer coating on both sides of the fabric. This fabric is manufactured and tested to withstand 1000

oC for a period

of 60 minutes and 600oC for a period of 120 minutes. The

side seams and joints are closed with the use of cotton covered stainless steel thread. They are automatically controlled using the tubular motor system with group control panels and similar motor configurations as used with the fire curtains. The smoke curtains may not be installed with side guides as there is a tolerance allowed around the edges through which smoke may seep. The over-lapping of one motorised curtain against another is used to cover larger expanses. The curtain is retained together with the over-lapping and also that of a pair of inverted metal bar at the bottom.

BOTTOM BAR comprises a pair of inverted aluminium angles

riveted either side of the Curtain.

Specification

Static Curtains

GELEC Fixed Curtain are manufactured as standard from

fabrics used in Smoke and Fire Curtains dependant on the

project specification. The Fixed Curtain fabric panels would be

machine sewn using stainless steel. For wide curtains, the

fabric panels are overlapped at vertical joints in order to achieve

the integrity of the overall system.

The fixings to secure the curtain to the building structure may

vary from self tapping screws through galvanised mild steel

angle to steel clips that are specifically designed to retain the

curtain in place. Bottom pocket hems are used to contain the

steel rod which aids the stability of the curtain

To ensure that all penetrations are smoke tight the surrounding

curtain fabric should be sealed using either metal gaskets or fire

resistant tape. Cuts made in the fabric would be sewn using

stainless steel thread.
