SF 1: Brass spoon head. This conforms to the type issued to troops in WW1. SF2: Brass ring with three internal thinner rings of brass. Approximately 25mm in diameter. Stamped VAR within an oval. Unidentified. SF3: Brass button, domed back with four holes. This is a standard military shirt button and very likely to date from WW1. 17mm in diameter. SF4: Lead disc, rounded on both top and base. A rectangular slot runs through the base. Unidentified. SF5: .303 drill cartridge. Four holes bored into the cartridge signify this as the official training round of WW1 – to further distinguish it from the regular ‘live’ ball round, it would have had a round nosed wooden bullet (painted red) and the primer cup on the base was removed. Reject cartridges were often utilised with the original headstamp cancelled out by a circular stamp. This specimen consists of the lower part of the cartridge only, and while the headstamp is ilegible, the cancellation stamp is visible. SF6: Fe window stay. Incomplete, 149mm long, showing a bend at the point of break. Possibly originates from a camp hut, or equally possibly one of the greenhouses previously on site. SF7: Brass strap guide. 26mm by 18mm, made of 3mm thick wire. WW1 Canadian webbing. SF8: .303 drill cartridge. Headstamp reads ‘U.15 VII’ with cancellation stamp. Although the cartridge is missing its primer cap it appears not to have the normally required holes bored into the side to make it a conventional drill round, so is perhaps an expedient case type, created specifically during the war. A fragment of the mock wooden bullet remains inside, pushed down into the base of the cartrdge. The original round was manufactured by Remington Arms, Connecticut, USA in 1915 but the conversion into a drill round would have been carried out in the UK. SF9: .303 cartridge. Headstamp reads ‘R 15 L VII’ and the cartridge retains its fired (indented) primer cap. A Mk VIII fired ball round possibly brought down from the rifle ranges above the camp. Manufactured at Royal Laboratory Factory 5, at Woolwich, in 1915. SF10: .303 drill cartridge. Four holes bored into the sides of cartridge and absence of primer cap. Headsatmp reads ‘R 15 L VII’, with cancellation ring, indicating the original manufacture at Royal Laboratory Factory 5 and subsequent conversion into a drill round. SF11: Brass General Service (GS) button, South Africa. Contains the latin text ‘Ex Unitate Vires’ (Union is Strength) with the image of a lion over a coat of arms, flanked by a springbok and an oryx (gemsbok). This is the larger of the two types of GS button in service, worn on tunic and overcoat. Illegible text on rear. 26mm (one inch) in diameter. SF12: Alloy button, domed back with four holes. There appears to be some illegile text on the rear. 17mm in diameter.
