Hello and welcome to the May edition of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick magazine.

At this time of year we have the May Day celebrations and a bank holiday where we celebrate the coming of Summer (we hope). It is that time of the year when warmer weather comes and with it the beautiful blossoms, the sun making things sparkle with life. There is more than a spring in my step and my winter coat is put away. Apart from May Day on the 1st we also have VE day on 8th May celebrating the official end of WWII.

We hope you enjoy this month's issue. Judy Upton this month is about Swiss Gardens, which appeared in a Novel by William Black in 1870, an area that has certainly changed in the last 143 years!

What to do with an unruly garden being taken over by weeds? At this time of year they thrive and Mark gives some tips on how to handle them.

On that final note, I hope you have a great month and we will see you again in June!

Warm wishes, Angela

New Start rides are here!

Looking for some help to get a little more active and out and about enjoying the nearby countryside on a bike? Local mountain bike instructors ZigZag

Cycling are organising a regular, gentle introduction to off-road cycling on the first Sunday of each month – for free.

The New Start Rides are designed for anyone looking to make a first step toward getting out and about and into a healthier, more active lifestyle. Taken at a gentle, easy pace it follows the flat, traffic free Downs Link bridleway from Shoreham up toward Bramber and back – with a chance to enjoy a chat at the end about any aspect of cycling and active lifestyles with the ZigZag Cycling team.

“When we set up ZigZag Cycling last year we wanted to offer a wide range of enjoyable rides and experiences not just for people already into mountain biking. We also wanted to help make off-road cycling more accessible and encourage those who are maybe not so active to make the most of the great opportunities to be enjoyed” said Nick Finch, one of the two founders. “The Downs Link provides a perfect, easy route for anyone starting out – and we can offer tips, such as getting the right set up on the bike, to make for a fun and rewarding ride.”

“We’re also hoping to link up with the Adur Council’s Wellbeing network of support so can point people to a wider set of activities to try and the advice that they provide” explained co-founder Mike Porteous. And M’s Cycles on the High Street are offering a discount on bike servicing and parts to any New Start Rider.

You’ll need a bike in reasonable condition and a helmet – though hire can be arranged if needed and given a week or so notice. Call Mike at ZigZag Cycling on 07758 703572 or email [email protected]

There’s no charge and no need to book – though Mike and Nick encourage riders to check out their FaceBook page for any updates and post a message if planning to join. Further details are also on their website www.zigzagcycling.com Rides set off at 10:30 from the wooden Shoreham Toll Bridge every first Sunday of the month – look for the ZigZag banner.

Fascinating Facts about…spiked rampion The specTacuLar

spiked rampion is an extremely rare wild flower that only grows at a handful of sites in East Sussex. Also known as ‘white Rapunzel’, its unusual cream-coloured spikes bloom in May and June.• as a wild plant

spiked rampion is common in central Europe but it is one of the UK’s most rarest plants, and native only to East Sussex

• is incredibly fussy where it grows and appears only on a tiny number of sites in East Sussex, mainly on uncut verges

• its spiky cones of creamy-white flowers are on rigid stems standing just under a metre high

• a member of the bellflower family, its closest relative is round-headed rampion, a wild flower that is more common on the South Downs than anywhere else

• is known on the continent as white Rapunzel - according to the fairytale Rapunzel’s father steals the flower for his pregnant wife from the garden of an enchantress. As a punishment they are forced to give the enchantress their baby which she names Rapunzel and locks in a tall tower

i reaLLy don’T think I’m going to mention the weather this time round, just please let there be some decent growing

weather by the time you read this! With the ever lengthening days we should now be into the gathering momentum of the summer garden with plenty of plants doing their utmost to give a good show. As always that means more work to get the best out of it

May is normally a warm month, but still normally wet. Whilst the plants you have planted are still in their infancy

and slowly growing, the weeds absolutely thrive in these conditions. You can literally see them taking over an area in a matter of days. If you doubt how quick plants grow, my daughter measured the growth of a bean plant growing in the conservatory. It grew 5 inches in one day. Most weeds can easily put on this sort of growth, so you really need to keep on top of them. Not only can they look untidy, but they can seriously affect the growth of your plants. Think of a weed as a bit like someone extra coming to an already packed dining table and squeezing in and taking all the room and the food. They take food, light, water and growing room from the things you want to grow, so getting rid of them is a really important job in the garden.

Weed killer in certain circumstances can be an option, but there is always a danger of harming other plants. If you do need to use them near other plants, then a simple trick is to cut a plastic drink bottle in half. Place the top of the bottle over the weed and squirt the weed killer through the neck of the bottle. That way it only goes over the plant you want and doesn’t get blown by the wind onto your precious plants. Always be careful which ones you use and seek advice from where you buy it from. You really should avoid using any old ones in the sheds. Many older ones have substances in them that have been banned for either the damage it does to wildlife or to you, so be warned. If you have any old ones then dispose of them safely and start afresh.

If you do have an area that is badly infested with weeds then they can be cleared surprisingly quickly by hand. It is very gratifying to get a small area clear. Make sure you get out and roots and I always recommend throwing them away or burning them, rather than risking putting any of them on the compost. They have evolved to survive in the less favourable conditions and will soon spring back into life if you are not careful. Once you are clear of them then it’s a lot easier to keep them under control, by either hoeing the soil, which cuts the heads of them off, or by covering the area with some weed fabric or mulch.

It does all sound like a grotty job, but it can make a lot of difference to how the garden will look and thrive in the coming months, so happy weed hunting and fingers crossed for better weather!

ofTen afTer my first meeting with people they say “what a relief”. I don’t think this is because of me in

particular, but many people have been meaning to see someone like me for a very long time! People keep thinking I must take some advice, but just never get around to it.

The last few months have seen a lot of changes in the financial advice industry. Advisers have had to do a raft of exams to bring them up to a higher standard, also the way they are paid has changed. Many have retired, selling on their businesses, people have found themselves passed onto another advice firm, or even worse, orphaned; (meaning you have no adviser). Some people can’t even remember how they took out their plans in the first place, never mind who arranged it for them. If you are one of these people, what do you do when you need to take advice?

What to do Firstly, it is always wise to find yourself an independent financial adviser. They are able to write to all of your existing providers and register themselves as your new adviser. This allows them to build up a detailed knowledge of your current plans, the charges you are paying and how they have performed. Some independent advisers specialise in certain aspects of your financial planning only, such as investments, or pensions. Others deal with the whole spectrum of your financial situation; known as holistic planning. This will include advice on mortgages, pensions, insurance, investments and other areas. It would be wise to find a holistic adviser as the various aspects of your finances will often have a direct impact on another.

Once you find an adviser you feel comfortable with they will discuss all aspects of your needs, including your current and future plans, your attitudes to taking investment risk and other areas, just so that they understand exactly what you want to achieve. Taking all this into account they will advise you on the best course of action going forward.

Previously advisers would get paid for arranging a plan, not looking after it. So, they may have arranged the best investment for you at the time, but is this still the case? Systems for managing peoples’ money have evolved greatly

over the past few years. Advisers can be much more pro-active, reviewing your funds and managing them for you. It is more likely now that your adviser would be paid a pre-agreed fee for managing your investment, rather than just arranging a plan for you. if you are behind the times with your financial products, if you require an independent and holistic review, please call me Claire Cook on 01403 330822, i would be very happy to assist.

Kilmeny

10 To advertise call: 01273 452065

WiLLiam BLack Was born on the 13th of November 1841 in Glasgow. He was schooled as a landscape

painter, and as a writer became celebrated for the detailed and atmospheric descriptions of landscapes and seascapes in his novels. During his own lifetime these novels were very popular and his work was compared favourably to that of Anthony Trollope. Moving to London as a young man, Black first found success as a journalist. Sadly, Black's first wife, Augustus Wenzel, died in 1866 of a fever, a year after their marriage. Their young son Martin died in 1871.

In 1870 William Black published his novel ‘Kilmeny’ in which the main character makes a visit to the Swiss Gardens at Shoreham, then a popular pleasure grounds occupying a far larger area than now, and including a boating lake, theatre, concert hall and ornamental ruins. In ‘Kilmeny’ the narrator tells us that “some local club or society having resolved to hold its annual fete at the Swiss Gardens, Shoreham, Mr. Lewison, who knew several of the members, was asked to form a party to go there.”

Black’s description of the kind of events to be experienced on a day trip to the Swiss Gardens during the 1860s follows, giving us a vivid account of what a visit to this Victorian attraction would have been like. “When we reached Shoreham, we found that a number of people had arrived, and had already become familiar with what must have been to them the very novel amusements of the gardens. Here some young girls in gauzy white, with red roses in their hair and pink gloves on their hands, were practising archery in a reckless fashion, and getting extraordinary compliments from one or two gentlemen who were their attendants whenever chance brought a stray arrow near the target.”

The description goes on “There a party was playing at croquet, and exhibiting to bystanders a much greater skill in the fine art of flirtation than in sending a ball through the bell. Then there were the quiet walks through snatches of copsewood (with some painted pasteboard figure suddenly staring at you from among the bushes), the greenhouses, the flower-gardens, the lake, and what not, to attract straggling couples. I do not mean here to describe the various amusements that occupied us during the day, a picnic on the lawn being prominent among them; nor yet the performance at the theatre, where Miss Lesley sat in the front of the gallery,

and endeavoured to keep her numerous gentleman friends from talking to her while the actors were on the stage.

He describes the tranquil rural scene of the gardens in lyrical detail that is hard to reconcile with the blocks of flats and school that cover much of the site today: “we carelessly strolled onwards until we found our-selves in that straggling line of wood which surrounds the lake. Here we walked up and down in the cool of the beautiful

evening, all around us the flutter of green leaves and the stip ring of the sweet pure air; and then, when we came to a gap in the trees, we found a pale yellow sky overhead, sharply traced across with lines of cirrus clouds, gleaming like silver on the faint background of gold mist.”

As the couple go for a boat ride on the lake, the author adds, “I got in and took the oars. We paddled about a little, passed under the bridge and out upon the larger lake, which was now growing crimson under the evening sky. Out in the middle of the water we allowed the boat to float idly.” It is easy to see how Black used his trained artist’s eye to portray this beautiful description of bygone Shoreham at its most pretty and picturesque.

More novels followed the publication of ‘Kilmeny’ including the critically acclaimed ‘A Daughter Of Heth’ (1871), ‘The Strange Adventures Of A Phaeton’ (1872) and ‘A Princess Of Thule’ in 1874). William Black was at the height of his fame when in 1878 he moved to Brighton. To begin with he took a house in Belgrave Terrace on a six month lease to decide whether he liked Brighton enough to make it his permanent home. Upon deciding to stay he and his second wife Eva Simpson moved to 1 Paston Place where he lived for the rest of his life.

Black wrote from October until April each year, working two or three days a week in his study at the top of his house. On days he when wasn’t working, he would walk across the South Downs to Lewes or along the coast to Worthing. Worthing is described in his 1883 novel ‘Yolande’. William Black died on the 10th of December 1898 at only 57 years of age. He was buried in the churchard at Rottingdean, with Rudyard Kipling among the mourners at his funeral. Black is also remembered by a lighthouse built on a spot he knew and loved, south of Duart Castle, at the eastern extremity of the Isle of Mull.

Rogue TradersYou WILL bE hearing a lot about Operation Rogue Trader in the run up to a planned national week of action. Messages will be going out in the press and on social media sites highlighting issues and asking how you can help trading standards, police and partner agencies tackle the ‘Rogues’.

Rogue trading concerns incidents where consumers have been ’cold called’. It refers to the practice of deliberately overcharging for unsatisfactory goods and/or services. This includes charging for unnecessary work, damaging property deliberately in order to obtain money, leaving work unfinished and using intimidating behaviour in order to extort money.

The Adur and Worthing district will be providing opportunities for the public to talk to us about the issues that Rogue Traders raise and any other issues you may have.

For more information on this subject and please follow our website www.sussex.police.uk or follow us on Twitter @adurpolice and @worthingpolice.

More information can be found from Trading Standards at www.westsussex.gov.uk

FUEL THEFTWe are investigating after three motorists in Worthing had the fuel tanks on their vehicles tampered with.

The incidents all happened within a 24-hour period, in the hours of darkness, in Rackham Road, Cuckfield Road and Rogate Road. All three cars owners discovered damage to their fuel tanks.

We are investigating these incidents and would ask residents to report any similar crimes to us on 101. If you see anything suspicious and believe that an offence is actually taking place then dial 999.

Have you had experience using a rogue trader? The police and Trading Standards would like to hear from you.
