New Shoreham Footbridge filmA film showing

the building of the new footbridge at Shoreham-by-Sea has just been released. The film features the construction of the new multi million–pound footbridge which will span the River Adur and link Shoreham Beach to Shoreham town centre. The bridge will also provide a valuable cycle link to and from the town. In the video there is footage of the foundations being installed on the river bank as well as shots of the old pedestrian bridge in the last few weeks before its closure. There is also film of the shuttle bus which is carrying over a 1000 passengers a day between Shoreham Beach and the town centre. The service will remain in operation until the new bridge opens to the public in August 2013.

residents benefit from 'New Ways of Working' at adur and Worthing councils!Adur District and Worthing Borough councils have been working hard over the past few years to deliver more efficient services and maintain a freeze in council tax.

Another significant piece of the jigsaw — and no a merger isn't on the cards! — is streamlining our office accommodation from three large administrative buildings — Worthing's Town Hall and Portland House and the Adur Civic Centre in Shoreham-by-Sea — into two.

To make this work the Adur Civic Centre is currently up for sale, as it needs a substantial sum spent on it to bring it up to modern day office standards.

In spring next year the majority of office-based staff will be relocated to the Town Hall and Portland House in Worthing in a radical move to reduce running costs and further improve services to our customers.

Portland House is already closed ready for a major refit to introduce new ways of working and accommodate more staff. Residents across the two areas will access their services from this brand new customer services hub in Portland House, once the refurbishment has been completed this spring.

In the meantime residents can still access services at the Civic Centre in Adur and the Town Hall in Worthing. Both councils have an extensive joint website, www.adur-worthing.gov.uk which residents can use to access many services online.

hAppy new yeAr to you all. Although Christmas is fast

becoming a distant memory it still feels like we are in the depths of winter. Don’t say it too loudly but spring is fast approaching. The days are now slowly starting to get lighter, which means that the plants are gathering their energy and starting to grow. Under the surface the spring bulbs are already starting to make their way towards the surface, so there’s a lot to look forward to.

It also means there’s a lot to do, but it’s a good way to burn off the excess Christmas calories. On a serious note many people go head long into doing a mad blitz in the garden, when they are not ready for it. This can lead to all sorts of problems, such as pulled muscles or bad backs. Before you do any hard work such as digging, take a minute to do a few little stretches. It’s well worth wearing a few layers of clothing as you can peel them off as you get warmer, but it means you’re warm to start with. There is an art to digging effectively and efficiently in the garden and it takes time to get used to it, so pace yourself. Similarly if you need to lift anything heavy, ask for help. I know it may sound obvious but we come across so many people who injure themselves from doing simple tasks.

Although you need to pace yourself, there’s already so much to do, it’s like a sprint. These coming months are the

formative months for the garden, where timing is pretty important, about what you sow or plant and when. If you have a greenhouse, then it’s already time to start looking at sowing certain varieties of tomatoes, cabbages for an early crop. It’s also a good time of year to plant fruit bushes and trees. If you fancy an early harvest of rhubarb then if you cover it with a forcing pot, or a bucket or similar, you can force the rhubarb to grow quicker. This gives early sweet stalks, but you can’t do it every year or you will ruin the plant.

Elsewhere you can start preparing for the flowers in the garden. Check any bulbs you may be storing to ensure that they are not rotting. If you do any digging in the garden as you prepare any new areas for planting and removing stubborn weeds, be careful of any new bulbs that are coming up. If you struggle to remember where you have planted bulbs previously then why not take photos of the garden as a reference. Photos of the garden can also be very helpful if you’re looking at planning any new aspects of the garden.

Finally if you get to worn out from all the exercise, take a chance to order any new bulbs, seeds or potatoes, as they can quickly become difficult to get hold of as the weather improves as we get closer to spring. I love this time of year as I see signs of new life and better weather every day working in the garden, there really is no better time of year to get out

there and have a good look around, and it’s amazing how many new signs you can see so early on.

when iT Comes to our finances, we all know what we should be doing, but do we do it? It’s one of those jobs

you may never get round to, you know it will make things better in the long run, but there are always more important things to do. Yes, you can see the direct debits coming out of your bank account every month, but it’s only £30 you say. You can’t remember what it is for, it’s something you arranged years ago. Well, think about it like this, that £30 per month over twenty years adds up to £7,200!

One way of getting rid of your hard earned money may be to join a gym and never go, most of us have done that at some point in our lives. Especially relevant at this time of year with all those good intentions! Another way of wasting money is by spending hundreds of pounds on old policies we don’t need, just because they are on direct debit. Or paying into pension plans with no clue of how they are performing; another classic waste of money, spending too much on your mortgage. All of this money cannot be made back, and you have worked for it. To boil it right down you could say you are wasting your precious time working for no reason.

To be financially wise and look after your older self, keeping check now and making some savings can make a real difference. Whilst we are earning it may not seem so important, but that £30 per month plus interest as a lump sum when we retire could make a big difference. I am not saying that you should go out and cancel all your direct debits, but check out what you are paying for and take some advice.

things are changingIt has been noticeable since the credit crunch; people have re-evaluated. They have realised that they can’t find happiness in material things. Frugality is in! Thoughtful gifts rather than flashy presents, small eco friendly greetings cards instead of the large padded variety; small fuel efficient cars instead of the gas guzzler. It seems more tasteful somehow, and actually

takes a little more effort, we are realising this is something to be valued! We could go back to those old sayings, “It’s the thought that counts” or “size doesn’t matter.” In this context you could say it is true! Our ways of life and values are shifting, I think for the better.at this point i could start writing about financial health-checks, but i am not going to do that. You know if you need to check things out. all i will say is give it some attention and a little time. For independent advice and a free initial consultation please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. i would be happy to help. lastly a happy and prosperous New Year to you all!

now A new report has found that working families with two children need a minimum of £36,800 to have an

acceptable standard of living — an increase of a third since 2008 and twice the rate of inflation.

Soaring childcare and transport costs have combined with cuts to tax credits to hit families hardest, says the report from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation which puts the figure for a lone parent with one child at £23,900.

Its report finds that couples with two children have been hit in three areas. • Minimum childcare costs have risen by nearly a third. In

2008, child minders outside London charged on average £2.70 an hour but now charge £3.50, making childcare a family's single biggest weekly outgoing.

• Bus travel has doubled in price since the late 1990s which, combined with cuts to public transport, means families with children now deem a car as an essential for the first time.

• The report says cuts to tax credits have increased earning requirements substantially, more than cancelling out the benefit of higher income tax thresholds.

The research also found that a quarter of the UK's population

live below Minimum Income Standard — three million more people than in 2008.

But despite the squeeze, families have not fundamentally changed their views of what is necessary to have an adequate standard of living.

However, the research shows that people are being thrifty. For example, households are cutting back on exchanging gifts and shopping around for deals and vouchers when eating out, and still achieve an acceptable minimum.

Julia Unwin, Chief Executive of the JRF, says: "Families have a monumental task trying to earn enough to get by. Parents facing low wages and pressure on their working time have little prospect of finding the extra money they need to meet growing household expenses.

This year's research shows that a dangerous cocktail of service cuts and stagnating incomes are being keenly felt by parents. Many working people face the risk of sliding into poverty. It illustrates how anti-poverty measures are needed to address not just people's incomes but also the costs that they face."

Donald Hirsch, co-author of the report, adds: "People are being more modest in terms of what they think needs to be spent on participating in society, but this thrift has been outweighed by rising costs. Parents have not changed their view of most needs, including a nutritious diet and participation by children in activities vital for social inclusion. What has changed is the ability of many families to afford such essentials."

And Chris Goulden, Programme Manager for Poverty at JRF, says: "Work is vital for families to achieve a minimum acceptable standard of living.

"However, the National Minimum Wage combined with in-work benefits leave families well short of reaching this standard. It is harder to make ends meet because of the rapid rate benefits and tax credits are reduced as earnings rise."

Families cope with a 33% rise in bills We can tell simply from our rising shopping and utility bills that we need more money simply to maintain the standard of living we enjoyed five years ago.

Vanishing animals

12 To advertise call: 01273 452065

As A Child I remember seeing a stuffed Red Squirrel in a case in the

marlipins museum. It was marked as the last Red Squirrel shot in Shoreham. As a child I used to visit Potter’s Museum Of Curiousity at Bramber.

In Victorian times this pretty animal was common in our area but now the only place in Southern England where Red Squirrels are still found is on the Isle Of Wight. In the rest of Southern England, in the last eighty years they have been entirely replaced by the larger Grey Squirrel, though scientific research is still not entirely clear on how the expansion of the Grey Squirrels has affected the Reds. Perhaps they drove them out physically, perhaps they competed for food more successfully or maybe it was due to a disease that the Greys are more resistant too.

The Grey Squirrels now to be found throughout our area, and often entertaining the public in St. Marys churchyard with their antics, are a species that only arrived in Britain from

North America in 1876, when they were deliberately introduced by a landowner. There have been the odd sighting of red squirrels in the New Forest and other parts of Sussex but sometimes the grey squirrel can have a gingerish tone to their fur which at a distance may cause confusion.

Another animal once found in Shoreham was the otter. If mankind can be held to blame for indirectly causing the extinction of the Red Squirrel in Southern England by reducing forests and introducing the Grey Squirrel, then the involvement of humans in the fate of the otters is even more dramatic.

Although pollution and increasing the urbanisation of the Adur riverside made otters an increasingly rare sight here during the early 20th century, a substantial reason for demise was the

blood sport of otter hunting. Otter hunting in this area was not a traditional or ancient pastime. In fact before 1903 there were no packs of otterhounds working on the rivers of Sussex. It was a Mrs Walter Cheeseman of Crowhurst, near Battle who in that year bought nine otter hounds from Somerset to form a pack for hunting in both Kent and Sussex. The rivers of both Kent and Sussex proved difficult terrain for the otterhounds due to steep banks, thick undergrowth and deep water. The attraction of being able to hunt in picturesque countryside, not too far from the nearest town was attractive to the hunters however.

The hunting season began in April and ended at the end of September. The hunt meeting would start at 10.30am and those attending would arrive in early motor cars. As many as 80 to 100 people could attend, following the hounds on foot. If the hounds were following an otter up a meandering stretch of river many of the hunters would take a short cut by car to save their legs. The hounds swam after their quarry and as in fox hunts the animal would be caught and killed when overcome by exhaustion. Although otter hunting was banned by law.

Neighbourhood Policing

WIth thE NEW Year also comes poor weather, although we have already had plenty. Weather causes a number of reasons to take care on the roads including Ice, wind, rain, snow and darkness.

The Roads Policing Unit attends a number of accidents each day at could be prevented if greater care is taken on the roads.

Our Roads Policing Unit (RPU) having been heavily engaged with our drink drive campaign over Christmas will now be turning their attention to Road Safety during the harsh weather.

We understand that we all have busy lives and time is often short but some small and easy steps could mean the difference between life and death on the roads.• Give yourself reasonable time to reach your destination

safely.• De-ice your car properly.• Change your driving style depending on the weather (i.e in

low visibility go slowly).• Keep items such as a first aid kit, heat blanket / sheet, and

touch in your car.• If you ride a motorcycle always wear your hi-vis and

remember to ‘Be Safe and Be Seen’.• Always plan your journey. Staying safe is our real priority message. We all have a responsibility to take care to reduce the risks on the roads.

Bike SafeWe have suffered a number of bicycle thefts across the district of late and a number have been from secure garages or out buildings such as sheds.

To deter this kind of theft keep your bike locked even when in a secure area to something heavy or fixed. Keep a note of your bikes serial number and the location you got it from.

We suggest that D-Locks are the best as they are harder to defeat that a chain.

Lastly keep your bike out of sight. With Christmas just gone lots of bike will have been given a special gifts and a nice new bike is a pretty target.

Happy New Year

Maureen Jenkins, of Allergy UK, says: "The results are of concern for Allergy UK because it is difficult for individuals to exercise the same control over their workplace as they would do at home. Management of allergies becomes increasingly difficult when in communal spaces so it's not surprising that a great deal."

The survey also reveals that office cleaning is infrequent at best and doesn't appear sufficient to prevent the build up of house dust mites and allergens. Nearly 40 per cent of those polled say their office is cleaned once a week or less, while nearly one in five have to survive with less.

When you combine dusty, cluttered desks, soft furnishings, poorly vacuumed carpets and lack of ventilation with the fact that 20 per cent of us spend eight hours or more at work it's hardly surprising that it doesn't add up to a healthy working environment.

But, the charity points out, allergies don't just impact on workers as, according to the research, they are also having a significant effect on productivity.

While nearly three quarters of those questioned took time off sick in the last year, the real area of concern is that 42 per cent of allergy sufferers took time off work because of the impact on their condition. Nearly 15 per cent of sufferers were off work for between four and 10 days off due to their allergy, figures that could be addressed by actively

minimising allergens in the workplace. In a bid to address the problem, the national charity has

highlighted a number of office hotspots that can have huge implications for allergy sufferers.• LACK OF VENTILATION — most sufferers don't consider their

office to be well ventilated with only 15 per cent of people polled saying their office is well ventilated

• CARPETS — 90 per cent of workers say their workplace has carpeted floors which can harbour house dust mite allergen

• BOOKCASES — 54 per cent have open bookshelves which can release allergen into the atmosphere

• PLANTS — 38 per cent have plants which can harbour moulds which release spores which can cause allergic reactions Allergy UK believes there are steps that both employees and employers can take to reduce the likelihood of an allergic reaction at work —

• Ensure you have clean air in and around you • If you have a heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit

installed, make sure it is serviced regularly • If ventilation is limited, use an effective air purifier to help

remove and reduce allergens such as pollen, house dust mite debris and mould spores

• Review flooring and furnishings. Carpets on concrete floors can trap moisture allowing dust mites and mould spores to thrive

• Ensure cleaners have effective methods and equipment to get rid of pollens and allergens

• Keep your desk clear, uncluttered and damp dust twice a week

• Hang coats away from desks and traffic areas to prevent dust and allergens being disturbed and released into the air.
