The Power of Six SigmaIn this session, Dr Hasan will delve into the proven and sustainable power of Six Sigma. You will gain a clear, concise understanding of Six Sigma as a management strategy that aligns all levels of the organization, as well as an improvement methodology with a proven track record for a substantial ROI.You will learn how to harness the power of Six Sigma for your company’s competitive advantage through case studies packed with practical tips and lessons.

About your workshop leader:As a certified Six Sigma Master Black Belt, Dr Hasan Akpolat has guided several companies in implementing Six Sigma and trained more than 150 Black Belts and Green Belts in South East Asia.He delivers regular training courses and seminars and is a widely recognised speaker and chairperson at national and international conferences. Dr Hasan has more than 17 years experience in manu-facturing and service operations and has held senior management positions involving strategic planning and change management in a number of companies, including Sony Australia and Johnson & Johnson. Currently a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Technology, Sydney, Dr Hasan is the author of “Six Sigma in Transactional and Service Environments” published by Gower Publishing Company UK.

Workshop B • 2:00PM — 5:00PM

From Six Sigma to Design for Six Sigma“Quality must be built-in” - many people recognise this timeless message but few are confident about the tools for its implemen-tation. Dr Goh will explain how to transition from the Six Sigma approach to Design for Six Sigma (DFSS). DFSS aims at excellence not by rectifying unsatisfactory performance, but by anticipating factors or circumstances that could adversely affect future perfor-mance and taking early and effective countermeasures. Opportu-nities for efficiency and cost savings are also systematically revealed at the design stage of a product or process. The working of DFSS will be presented and discussed in a non-technical language; workshop participants do not require any prior knowl-edge of quality management theory or statistical concepts.

About your workshop leader:Dr Goh Thong Ngee is Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineer-ing at the National University of Singapore. He is a GE-certified Six Sigma trainer and has three decades' experience in teaching, research and industrial consulting. Dr Goh has been engaged by companies such as General Electric, Hewlett Packard and others for training programs in various countries in Asia-Pacific: more than a thousand Six Sigma Champions, Master Black Belts, Black Belts and Green Belts have benefited from his expertise.

Workshop C • 9:00AM — 12:00 NOON

Software Solutions to Aid Six Sigma Deployment There is no doubt that Six Sigma has proven its worth in today's business environments. However, despite significant investments in Six Sigma training, many companies fail to apply the same rigor to program execution and measurement. Instead, these compa-nies often rely on time-consuming manual methods, discon-nected spreadsheets or inflexible internal solutions, making it nearly impossible to "apply Six Sigma to Six Sigma" and optimise their overall effectiveness. In order to achieve full and sustained Six Sigma benefits, special-ized Six Sigma software tools can help you identify the best initia-tives, deploy them quickly and ensure rapid and consistent adop-tion. Having the tools to measure and document all these processes allow you to uncover trouble spots and monitor all areas of the business. Through this you can achieve a continual improvement program, making Six Sigma not a project but an integral part of the company culture. In this workshop, N C Naray-anan takes you through several software tools with case studies to show you how they help to optimise your Six Sigma projects and initiatives.

About your workshop leader:N C Narayanan is Managing Director of Six Sigma Alchemy, a management consultancy firm in India specializing in business process improvement strategies and operational excellence, includ-ing Six Sigma methodologies.

Workshop D • 2:00PM — 5:00PM

Achieving Management Buy-in Support for Six Sigma ImplementationDoes six sigma need to have the support of upper management? The obvious answer to this question is yes.Unfortunately, many have the experience of working where management does not fully realise or understand the value of investing the extra time and effort required for quality improve-ment in the organisation. These quality improvement processes and selected projects need to be aligned to the annual goals of the organisation and must be successfully completed on time. There will always be resistance to changes brought into an organisation, and change requires continuous support, encour-agement, and monitoring from top management to overcome that resistance.Syed will take you through the why’s of needing total manage-ment for your Six Sigma projects and the how’s to achieve this.

About your workshop leader:Syed Nadeem has more than 10 years of diverse experience in overhauling process improvements of aero gas turbine systems. A Six Sigma Black Belt, Syed is currently with Pakistan International Airlines’ Aero Gas Turbines Power Plant Overhauling Business Devel-opment Division. He has conducted trainings on gas turbines power plants, process improvement studies and application of six sigma quality management methodology in performance improvement of gas turbines.

KEYNOTE TOPIC

10:00AM Integrating Six Sigma Into Your Ongoing Business Process Improvements With Minimal Disruption For Maximum ImpactImplementing Six sigma is a major change process for any company, especially if you already have other business or operational improvement programmes or frameworks in place. Major shifts in process might bring unexpected downtimes which will cause the company to incur losses. The lack of proper coordination between the implementa-tion of different programmes, will more often than not, result in an overall drop in productivity and mild confusion among the ranks as they try to assimilate it into their working procedures. This topic reveals how you can integrate these programmes together efficiently.

11:15AM Implementation of Six Sigma Program in an EPC project in IndonesiaRadian will share his experience in leading a team which implemented and applied Six Sigma methodology to projects during the construction of Kujang 1B, an ammonia-urea fertilizer plant in Indonesia, between 2003 and 2005. This was PT Rekayasa Industri’s first experience with Six Sigma. Initiated by the project team and not by top management, this team underwent Six Sigma training and began to slowly apply Six Sigma methodology to various projects. After two years, it the Kujang 1B project almost completed, the team found that 28 Six Sigma projects had been completed with total benefit per cost ratio around 5.9. Based on these encouraging results in Kujang 1B, the Six Sigma team recommended to top management that Six Sigma be implemented on a wider scale within the whole company.
