My Fellow Nobles,

Wow! We had 25 new Nobles join the Caravan last month. They enjoyed the Ceremonial, the Shrine Arch

Production, the Parade of Units and the Showcase, but they were awestruck at our Hospital! We hope ALL

of our Nobles will take the opportunity to visit our Hospital and see the one place where miracles happen

on a daily basis. It will also help you to re-connect with the reason that we all became Shriners, which is

having fun and helping kids.

We also want to recognize Noble Wayne Witczak for organizing the Fellowship Social on June 22. It was

well attended and we gained a lot of interest that will hopefully become petitions. Noble Wayne decided he

wanted to help our Membership Team and jumped in with both feet. Thanks Noble Wayne!!

As you read this, we are preparing to attend the Imperial Session here in Tampa. It is an honor to host the

convention, and far more work than I care to imagine. I hope you’ll have a chance to attend the various

activities. The Schedule is:

July 3rd Egypt Temple Dinner at 7 pm at the Spaghetti Warehouse in Ybor City.

Please remember our offi ce is closed on July 4th. On July 20th, the Keystone Kops Ladies will host the Ladies Luncheon in the Stu Lang

Activity Center. The Men will meet in the Provost Guard Room.

At the Oasis this month we will have Karaoke on the 1st and 15th, as well as Dinner and a Movie on the 22nd. On July 30th, Egypt

Shrine Ladies hold their Fundraiser at Side Splitters Comedy Club.

Tickets are $15 with 80% of the ticket price benefi tting our Patient

Transportation Fund. See a Divan Lady for tickets.

Next month, we have the Nobles Birthday Party on the 6th. Looking

further to the future, on the weekend of September 30 to October

2nd, we will have the Last Beach Getaway on St. Pete Beach.

MEMBERSHIP5 for 5 Membership Program Guidelines

‘The Noble’ is the top-line signer (T.L.S.) for FIVE New

Candidates who become EGYPT Shriners and each of

whom remains current in their payment of dues for a

period of FIVE years.

The TLS must have remained current in paying HIS own

dues for that same period and not have been suspended

during that same period for non-payment of dues.

A ‘new noble’ must remain Egypt Shriners for at least

one year prior to transferring membership to another

Shrine Center to qualify under the program.

Should any of the ‘new Nobles’ resign their membership

or be suspended for non-payment of dues, that ‘new

noble’ will no longer be included in this incentive

program. The TLS must nominate a new candidate and

that replacement candidate must remain a Noble as

described above for 5 years, as well as the TLS’s other

candidates.

When the TLS has nominated fi ve Shriners who remain

current in the payment of their dues for fi ve years, he

will receive a Life Membership at a stated meeting.

This program commenced January 1, 2015. It is NOT

retroactive!

Scottish Rite NewsBy Worshipful Casey Fletcher 32°, KCCH

Irony is a good word to describe our journey through the

Blue Lodge. We begin with a reasonable expectation, that

is encouraged by the Fraternity, that we will obtain secret

knowledge, a mystery or information long hidden from

the profane. How ironic it is to arrive at the milepost of

Master Mason only to learn that which we sought has

been lost. Not just simply misplaced within a small wooden

chest or coff er in a dusty, dark underground vault, but

really lost, “perhaps, forever lost!” We sought answers

and secrets and, ironically, are off ered only mystery,

symbols, allegories and a substitute word for the Lost

Word.

We then grapple with the Lost Word. Is it simply and

literally a word? The Hiramic Legend off ers the mythical

explanation that it was a word of recognition for the

travelling Master Mason’s benefi t and convenience.

This explanation is easily dismissed by thoughtful Masons

and explicitly dismissed in the ritual of the 13th degree,

Royal Arch of Solomon. If it were literally so, i.e., merely

a word of recognition, the Symbolic Lodge would have a

very weak ending to a very good story.

Maybe the Lost Word is a symbol, a state of mind, a

process or some allusion to a signifi cant religious or

historical event? The Lost Word thus would invoke a

sense of wonder, implicitly encouraging us to search,

study, learn and grow.

The Lost Word, it is often suggested, is the (an) ineff able

name of Deity. The York Rite system off ers such a Word

in its Royal Arch Mason degree. The Scottish Rite off ers a

word in its 14th, 18th and 32nd degrees.

While these words may be helpful to one’s journey, their

receipt is neither decisive or fi nal. The 13th degree’s work

and oration suggest the possibility that the Lost Word

may not be the (an) ineff able Name. “It undoubtedly has a

hidden meaning.” The Lost Word may represent wisdom,

harmony, knowledge, a process, a course of conduct or a

way of life, or a path by which one returns from whence

one came or it may signify something else entirely. This

proposition should keeping us thinking.

If, however, we conclude “oh, that is what the Lost Word

is” and thereby become settled and satisfi ed, we may

erroneously conclude that our journey is complete and

our personal growth may devolve, decelerate or cease.

We might safely conclude that if the receipt of the (a) Lost

Word seems to be the destination of our journey, better it

might be that the Word remains lost.

In any event, the Royal Arch of Solomon makes no attempt

to remove the irony from Freemasonry’s work. “Applying

to the legend of the Degree what you have now heard,

you may be able to interpret for yourself the whole of the

allegory…”

The Scottish Rite’s degrees will next be conferred on October 29th and November 5th. Petitions are available at http://tampascottishrite.org.

The Valley of Tampa regularly meets at its Center in Tampa on the 2nd Monday of each month. Dinner is served at 5:45 PM and the regular meeting starts at 7:30 PM. At our next meeting on July 11th, the 8th degree, Intendant of the Building, will be conferred at 6:10 PM. An education program will be presented by Brother Joseph Gonzalez 32nd degree, KCCH at the regular meeting. The 13th degree will be conferred at the August 8th meeting.

Casey Fletcher is Past Master of Tuscan Lodge No. 6 in Bartow, Florida. He notes that Freemasonry presents many ironies that require a lot of refl ection and thinking.

Hospital Tour Guide NewsBy Noble Frank Harmon, Chief Tour Guide

I was sitting at the front desk one day and a Shriner

approached me and said that he might be interested in

becoming a Hospital Tour Guide and wondered what

it took to join our group. As I was about to answer him,

his wife rolled her eyes and said oh no you don’t, you

already have too much to do and you don’t need another

distraction. His reply to her was, it’s not a big deal, they

just sit around here in the lobby and show people around

if they ask for a tour. Hmmm, what do you think is going

to happen to his application if it shows up? Furthermore,

if it’s not a big deal, why are you even interested? Just for

grins, I decided to look up Tour Guide to see if it defi ned

a Tour Guide as someone who sits around in the lobby

doing nothing.

One of the more interesting defi nitions was that of a

Docent. It is a word of German derivation which is defi ned

as a teacher, a lecturer, a commentator, and/or a conductor

of visitors to an institution, museum or university, who

regarding the exhibits and selections viewed on the tour;

no mention of sitting around in the lobby.

More importantly in our particular situation, we are

ambassadors for an institution that has no other goal than

to help children improve their lives. We meet and greet,

we answer questions, pose for pictures and give hugs,

smiles and high 5’s. We unload pop tops, teddy bears,

blankets, toys and hats. We deliver in house mail and in

general, lend a helping hand to whomever in the hospital

we may assist, be they employees or visitors. We conduct

tours as we lovingly and proudly show off our beautiful

hospital. We do on occasion, sit around in the lobby,

chatting with people and Shrine Drivers and do our best

to provide an upbeat, free-fl owing atmosphere wherein

our children may thrive, feel happy, accepted and safe.

We are also “ombudsmen or representatives, of one of the

fi nest institutions on the planet”. “We are the Fezzes that

people see and recognize that defi ne us all as Shriners.

We learn and receive as much from the people we guide

as we give on our tours”. We are the “salesmen of happy

feelings and purveyors of warm fuzzies”.

Even though we may “offi cially be on duty” only one day

each week, our families, friends and neighbors all know

about our passion because we talk about our hospital

even when we are not in it”.

We have about an hour when conducting a tour, in

which to weave our tales of awe and wonder and to say

all that we want to say about our hospital. We all come

from diff erent backgrounds, vocations, educations and

experiences yet, we still communicate the same message

of hope and caring although we are from such diverse

places as individuals. A very unique group dynamic.

Yeah that’s what we do; just sit around in the lobby. Stop

by some day if you think you can keep up with any of us.

The Brandon Shrine Club’s June Birthday luncheon

honored the following Nobles: Gary Crossfi eld, James

Farlow and Mark Vargo. The lunch was well attended and

all the Brothers in attendance had a great time. Happy

Birthday Nobles!

The BSC also held a Movie & Pizza night at the clubhouse.

Viruet PP, Joshua Vargo and Steve Landers Jr. brought in

numerous pizzas of various toppings, salad, chips, deserts

and we watched the new “Star Wars” movie. It was a great

evening and we had a good mix of Nobles, Ladies and

young people. I know we will do another Movie & Pizza

night again real soon.

Coming up on Monday June 27th we will have our Ladies

Social dinner at our clubhouse. It is always great to take

our Ladies out to dinner in a social setting with Brothers

& Sisters.

Nobles You are invited to attend the BSC which meets the

last Monday of the month. On even numbered months a

social dinner is held with our Ladies at a nice restaurant

or at our clubhouse. On odd-numbered months a dinner/

business meeting is held at our clubhouse, Nobles

only wearing the Fez. The Clubhouse is located at 125

Skywood Drive in Seff ner, 33584, time 6:00 social hour,

7:00 pm dinner/business meeting.

Citrus Shrine ClubBy Noble Robert “Slim” Owen 33°

We had a great turnout for our monthly social which was

enjoyed by all in attendance.

Our Red Necks are planning on participating in the July

4th Parade at the Imperial Session which will be over by

the time you read this, but time marches on as we do the

best we can.

Attendance has not dropped off as much as we anticipated

during the warmer weather, perhaps it is because of our

beautiful location on Lake Nina, or maybe the warm

welcome we all receive upon our arrival or it just might

possibly be the friendly attitude adjuster, Noble Ken Curry

and his Lady Jean who always arrive early and leave late,

taking care of all the little things that no one thinks about

until they are needed. Many thanks to them for all they do

for the club.

The “Pot Luck” dinners are really doing great, always more

than enough to go around and the selection changes

every month, keeping with the old adage, “Variety is the

spice of life”. I don’t know where the Ladies get all their

recipes and/or ideas but they sure are pleasing to us

“knife & fork” Shriners.

We are still planning on hosting the Hernando County

Shrine Club on October 8 at our annual OKTOBER FEST.

Years past it has been a great success and this year

should be no exception.

Business wise, our recycling has dropped to nothing but

our Red Fez boxes are doing quite well. We are looking

for more locations, so if you know of a business where we

might place on, give us a call.

Hernando Shrine ClubBy Noble Artie Lent

The Hernando Club has been having great attendance at

our monthly socials.

The May Social had a famous performer Ms. Marti Carroll

who came from famous mom and dad. Her mom had a

hit on American Bandstand and her Dad’s band played

with Chubby Checker. Marti traveled the country with her

own band for years and recorded and played in Nashville.

She settled in Spring Hill for her semi-retirement. She was

such a hit that we booked her again for our September

social.

The June social had the sales manager from Fletcher

Music playing one of their spectacular organs which

sounded like an entire orchestra. She played hit songs

for our listening and dancing pleasure. Of course our

caterer prepared a wonderful meal for the Nobles and

their Ladies.

All the other shrine clubs are welcome to attend our great

Socials. Just contact one of the Nobles of the HCSC for

information and to be added to the monthly email list. You

Highlands Shrine ClubBy Noble Jerry Higginbotham

Greetings from the Ridge. Our Memorial Day indoor picnic

was very successful with 50 nobles and ladies attending.

The Dart club furnished the hamburgers and hotdogs

again this year and the ladies brought their favorite dish

to share. There was lots of good and fellowship. Also, we

had 4 nobles and ladies on the Potentate cruise. Needless

to say a good time was had by all.

Our June social was a Hawaiian Night. The attire for the

evening was Hawaiian shirts for the Nobles and Moo-

Moos for the ladies. There were judging and prizes

awarded for the most authentic Hawaiian Shirt and Moo-

Moo. Winners will be announced in the next issue of the

Sands. Also, Nobles & Ladies were asked to bring photos

of their Dad’s to display in honor of Fathers Day. This was

another great evening enjoyed by all.

On Saturday, July 4th, the club will be celebrating our

Independence Day with a picnic at the club. The club will

furnish the meat and the Ladies are bringing their favorite

dish to pass. If it is anything like the Memorial Day Picnic,

the food will be fantastic. We look forward to seeing

everyone there. The July 4th picnic will take the place of

the July Social, so no social in July.

The club will continue to be dark for July and August.

The next event scheduled will be the Labor Day Picnic

on Monday, September 5th. However, there may be a

planned social at the club or a get together at a local

restaurant during the dark period. Watch the monthly

for any announced special activities during this period.

Some activities continuing during this period are Ladies

Tuesday evening cards 6PM, Wednesday Morning Coff ee,

Friday Night Darts 7 PM, Bunco 4th Tuesday 11:30AM, etc.

every Saturday mornings 8 to 11:30AM, as usual.

Also, Nobles and Masons don’t forget if you are traveling

to or thru Highlands County with a motor home or RV, our

club has 4 spaces with electricity and water located on

our grounds in shaded areas. These accommodations are

reserved for Nobles and Masons only. We are located at

New Port Richey Shrine ClubBy Noble Ron Bart

Once in a while you take a month or two off and feel good

about it. Suddenly you realize that all of those readers

you are supposed to have, have not said a word about

why there was nothing in the Sands. I guess that means I

can take time off any time I feel like it. Whoope!

Our June meeting was another Ladies day with a very

good attendance record. Certifi cate presentations were

made to the Ladies Auxiliary of Post 79 for their continuing

contributions of can tops to the Tampa hospital. Illustrious

Sir Bob Goodin presented the one from the Hospital and

Noble Frank Goff , our club president, presented one

from our club. Our speaker was Jim Lovell from Michels

& Lundquist funeral home. Our plan was to have our own

Illustrious Sir Roger Michels speak to us about anything

that would please him. Unfortunately Roger is still

recovering from surgery and unable to attend. Jim spoke

of making pre-arrangements for that day that will all come

to all of us. He passed out gift bags with note pads and

candy. There was an active questions and answer period

following his talk. One interesting fact that came out of

this question and answer session was that animals cannot

be cremated in the same facility that is used for humans.

Poor kitty.

Pinellas Shrine ClubBy Noble Doane N. Wright

We received three petitions for membership in June,

Charles Morris, Michael Lucente and Kirk Hinote. All were

accepted and induction was held for Michael Lucente and

Kirk Hinote at the June meeting.

A team attended the Putting for a Purpose and a second

team from Nitram also attended. Reports are that it was a

great success

We were represented at the Spring Ceremonial and we

sincerely hope we will be represented at the Imperial on

July 4th.

Barley Mo Brewing will hold an Anniversary July 23d. We

will have a 50/50 raffl e for this event.

We would continue to welcome donations of Fezzes for

our Fez Wall

Again we invite Mason and Shriners to attend our

meetings on the second Tuesday of the month at 7:00

pm in our Club Room at 521 Commerce Drive, Largo, FL

33770.

The Hospital Fishing Tournament in Hooper’s Hollow

this past May 14th had a good turnout. There were many

children who had a good time fi shing with some very

good barbeque. The fi sh did not cooperate very much but

a good time was had by everyone in attendance. Next

year the fi sh have agreed to be more cooperative.

The Defensive Handgun classes were, unfortunately,

cancelled. We did not have enough people sign up for

the event this time. We will off er the classes at a future

date and will publicize the information.

We will be off ering another Concealed Weapons class

at Shooters World in the fall. We are still working on the

details for these classes but are hopeful they will be

approximately $30 to $35 per person. The date, time

and cost is yet to be determined. This was a very popular

event for those who attended our fi rst one in September

2015. These classes are open to all at Egypt Shrine, their

families and pendant orders.

The Club, after considerable deliberation, decided to

cancel the Sporting Extravaganza slated for October 29,

2016 in the Stu Lang Activity Building. We will begin the

planning of a similar event to take place next year soon.

The Rod and Gun Club’s shotgun drawing tickets are

available from our members; $5.00 for one, 5 for $20.00.

Tickets will be available until just before the drawing

which will take place during the Imperial Session party on

July 4, 2016 at the Italian Club in Ybor City. As a reminder,

passed on June

17th. He was

considered one

of the greatest circus musicians of all time. His knowledge

of traditional circus music was unbelievable. I remember

several years ago sitting with him at his house while he

was recording all of the sheet music he owned, which

was lots and lots. He actually played several diff erent

instruments and would rewind and add one after another

until it sounded like a full orchestra before he was done.

Among his many rewards was bestowed upon him in

2011, he was inducted into Sarasota’s Circus Ring of

Fame. There are pages worth of information and stories

about Chuck Schlarbaum but I know we lost a good

friend and dedicated Shriner. The photo this month is

Chuck Sclarbaum on the right sitting with another great

showman, Ward Hall. A lot of history between these two.

As for the rest of the news from the Showmen’s Shrine

Club. Gerald Pittman, his Lady Ann, John Amato, Steve

Plotz, and Connie all worked a spot with Hot Dogs in

Ruskin. Didn’t make a lot, but they are out there dedicated

to the Showmen’s Shrine Club and the rest of the members

are proud to have them as part of the team, a big part.

Sultans of Egypt ShrineBy Noble Dave Hobbs

The Sultans continue to impress and grow, and our

membership grew to 59 members and we are still taking

applications. If you want to have a great time with lots of

fellowship and comradery this is where you should be.

We had a work party/picnic preparing for the Imperial

Session Parade on July 4th fi ne tuning the fl oat, making

sure all our lights are ready and a sound system prepared

to wake up the neighborhood. (I think it was more picnic

than work), We will be the talk of the parade...!!

The Sultans will be hosted a parade watch and after party

at the Italian Club in Ybor City. This was a popular event

and the VIP tickets “Sold Out” 3 weeks ahead of the

parade.

We are looking to fi ll our schedule with possibly another

parade or two next year, more information will be

announced should and if that becomes available. But, this

could be the last outing for the Sultans with the fl oat.

We are still accepting applications and anyone interested

in becoming a member of the Sultans, there is a $25

application fee and a $50 annual dues, as well as a

small outlay for the Sultan Uniform. We meet every 3rd

Wednesday of the month at 7pm in the Directors Staff

Room in the “Stu” Lang Activities Building.

The Director’s Staff had a wonderful month of June. We

want to thank everyone for attending and supporting our

Arch Degree at the beginning of the month. It turned out

wonderfully.

Additionally, we want to thank everyone for coming out to

our 52nd Annual Corn Boil the following weekend. It was

an enjoyable experience by all.

Thank you all for supporting the Director’s Staff over the

past few months regarding the circus, corn boil, and arch

degree.

Fun N’ FrolicBy Noble Mike “MooCow” McDonald

Oh my Goodness, the dog days of summer are here, if

it’s not raining, it is HOT outside, but as one of the Florida

Natives in the unit, this is home to us. Speaking of home

we have some new nobles from the last class fi nding the

CLOWN UNIT a place to call home. They are signing up

to be a new JOEY (that’s clown for you regular folks) and

the whole unit is excited to watch the inner Clown come

out of them. That is what’s so awesome about being a

Clown, when you put on the make-up this inner child or

clown character comes out of you and you are able to be

that person that in your ordinary face people would call

you crazy. Now they think your funny, want a picture with

you as well as an autograph, HOW GREAT IS THAT. A lot

of people see the make-up and think they could never

do that or they are not funny but I will assure you, Egypt

Temple are some of the best clowns in Shrinedom and

would love to show you what we know. Not only that, we

are the only unit that in every function gets on the level of

the child and that’s why you joined the Shrine,for the Kids.

We would love for you to come visit us in the Clown Room

on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. We do a 6:30 Dinner

and 7:30 Meeting. I hope you will stop by and see us.

I can’t wait to tell you how the Imperial Session went for

the Clowns. I hope you had a great time at it.

I hope all of your days are Clown days, and just for fun

the next time you see MooCow, make sure you tell him,

“MOO MOO BUCKAROO”. He loves that. Remember, “if

it’s not fun, don’t do it”

Legion of HonorBy Noble Rick Grant

It is that time of year again when the Legion of Honor goes

“Dark” for July and August. We will still be conducting

our normal operations at the Stated Communications but

suspending our Unit Meetings until September.

The Legion of Honor will be hosting an “Ice Breaker” get

together with other brother Nobles and their Ladies on

Thursday, July 7th. The function will be in the Stu Lang

Activities Building and will start at 7pm. We have arranged

transportation from and to the various hotels, making it

easier for out of towners to attend. Please respond to

the Commander, Tom Bishop if you are interested in

attending.

If you are active military of the U.S. forces or allies,

honorably discharged veteran, then the Legion of Honor

is looking for you to join our ranks. Ask any member for a

petition to send you on that path.

The Legion of Honor meets the fi rst Thursday after the

Council of Units Meeting at 7pm in the Legion of Honor

Room.

Motor CorpsBy Noble Andy Foster

The pickle is riding with Dave Backer. On July 4, 2016 your

Egypt Shrine Motor Corps along with other units from

Egypt Shrine, other Florida Shrine Centers and Shriners

from around the country completed at the International

Shrine Motor Corps competition. This competition is part

of the week long International Shrine convention held

here in Tampa, Fl. Congratulations to all the winners. More

importantly, congratulations to all the participants and

their support personnel. Egypt Shrine Motor Corps could

not compete without other members, their families and

our friends assisting us. This is truly a team competition.

Competition is not about winning and losing. It is about

Brothers showcasing their skills and hard work in friendly

competition. We are happy when we win and we are

happy for the winners, when they win.

I wish I could tell you who won. It will be in next month’s

sands magazine, as I am writing this article before the

competition takes place.

It has been a long season preparing for competitions.

We are looking forward to some enjoyable rides. We

encourage all riders to come out and join us. It is a great

time to be a Mason and a Shriner. Ride safe, stay alert and

enjoy the freedom of the open rode.

The 2016 Circus is now in the history books. We are happy to report that it once again was a successful Circus. Success just does not happen, people make it happen and our Nobility once again has put on a terrifi c Circus and continued a long tradition of excellence.

The names of our Circus Daddy contributors are listed in this issue of the SANDS. Many thanks to all who contributed, especially those who gave a little extra and participated in our Lion Trainer, Ringmaster, and Producer programs.

Our Annual Circus Awards Banquet will be held on Friday September 2, 2016 at 6:00 P.M. in the Stu Lang Activities Building. Invitations for all of our $1,000 Salesmen, Circus Producers, and Award Winners will be sent out in August. Please RSVP to Alicia by August 22, 2016. And there will be a lot

Shriners Village is the Web-based community created exclusively for the Shriners family. Fraternity members and their ladies can visit www.shrinersvillage.com to find information about Shriners Hospitals for Children®, fraternal programs, membership, temples, Shrine-related events and breaking news.

The website contains useful fraternity documents for nobles to download, such as the Fez Owners Manual, Membership Toolkit, Shriner Primer, Shrine Protocol and a pamphlet about the history of Shriners International. In its short existence, Shriners Village has become the communication engine for Shriners International.

“Given that there are 325,000 nobles all over the world, Shriners Village is a fantastic outlet for the fraternity to relay information to its nobility,” said Jack Jones, executive vice president of Shriners International. “It is also a great way for Shriners to learn from one another so they can help their temples succeed.”

Shriners Village also has an Events section with information about temple fundraisers and other activities. Any registered user has permission to post an event on the events calendar by clicking on the “Events” tab and then fi nding the “Events Calendar” on the left column of the page. To add an event, use the “Add Event” tab and then click the “Submit Event” button after the form has been fi lled out.

The Shriners Village development team will be adding new features to the website on a regular basis. One of the features will be member profi les, where nobles can upload photos and their information similar to Facebook. This new addition will make it possible for Shriners to fi nd and contact other members. Also in the works is a new forum feature which will allow nobles to share ideas and thoughts in a private discussion area.

The Oriental Band Parade Competition is scheduled for

10:00 AM, Monday, July 4th, with the Fantasy Competition

following the parade. The Awards Banquet is scheduled

for Tuesday, July 5th at 7:00 PM.

At this writing, due to some health issues, I do not know

how many of our members will be up to puffi ng and

pounding, however Sahib Oriental Band from Sarasota,

has graciously invited our Band members to play with

them.

None of our Lovely Ladies have a birthday in July, but Bro

Walter Schoepf will be lighting some birthday candles on

July 16th.

Thank you to all the Nobles and Ladies who wore their

Shrine shirts and made “Shriners International Awareness

Day” on June 6th a special day. Also thanks for your

Summer is upon us, and the 142nd Imperial Session is just a

short time away; the energy is building and the excitement

in Tampa is fantastic. Emerson once noted that “nothing

great was ever achieved without enthusiasm”, and we

certainly have it among the involved brethren at Egypt.

For the Tin Lizzies, this is another opportunity to build

on the success from our First and second place fi nishes

at the FSA annual meeting in Orlando (for competitive

drill and the obstacle course respectively). Also, the Tin

Lizzies will be involved in the Imperial parade and will be

active as greeters during the Imperial week. If you are

interested in getting involved, and are interested in a

highly visible unit such as the Tin Lizzies, please contact

this year’s president Noble Roger Chillura or V.P. Noble

Ed Willoughby for more information. Since we are actively

acquiring the beloved scaled down Tin Lizzies, we do

have cars available. While on the subject of membership,

our unit would like to welcome our newest member Noble

Rick Wendling, and we would like to wish longtime Lizzie,

Noble Dallas Adkins, a happy 86 birthday.

Following up with membership, Noble James Cantrell

and his Lady Bobbie have fi nally made their transition

to the Masonic Home in St. Petersburg. I had the honor

of visiting the facility, and I was amazed at the location

and the amenities on-site. They have a very nice beauty

parlor and barbershop, library, entertainment room and

other services too numerous to count. It would really be

benefi cial for all Brothers to make their way over to the

home and see it for themselves.

If any Brother is interested in Blue Lodge activities, the

15th annual Table Lodge for Hillsborough #25 is coming

up September 1 this year. It’s a great event, and very well

attended. Please get your tickets as soon as possible at

The Shriners’ Legacy Program: Strengthening Our Fraternal Bonds

As Shriners, we are part of an international organization that strengthens us individually, enhances our families and makes us part of a history of brotherhood and camaraderie. And, as Shriners, we also have the opportunity to be legacies. The Legacy Program helps strengthen our fraternal bonds with those closest to us, and allows members to honor the many men before us who laid the foundation of our great fraternity.

Promoting both membership and the Legacy Program will help ensure the future strength of this great organization that has enriched our lives. Shriners International invites each of you to be part of the Legacy Program, and to encourage your family members to participate, as well.

Each February, which is now designated as Legacy Month, temples are encouraged to host Legacy Nights to promote membership and honor the members who have taken part in this program. Shriners International will also share stories of Legacy families in our various publications and on our websites in recognition of their dedication to the Shriners fraternity.

Start Your Family’s Legacy Today: Register on Shriners Village All family members, including: sons, sons-in-law, brothers, uncles, grandfathers, etc., are eligible to become part of the Legacy Program. To make the registration process easy, the membership development office only requires one member of the family’s legacy to register on Shriners Village. When logging in to your account on Shriners Village (shrinersvillage.com), click on the “Membership” tab on the top of the web page. From this page, select “Legacy Program” on the left-hand side of the screen. If you have any questions about registration, please contact the membership development office at membership@shrinenet.org or 813-281-0300.

To commemorate taking part in this exciting program, each Legacy can download a certificate signed by the Imperial Potentate and Imperial Recorder. Shriners and their registered relatives can also order online a special gold Legacy pin that represents the pride they have in their Shriner heritage.

For many men, being a Shriner is a family tradition that stretches across generations. The Legacy Program is a way to honor this special bond.

Families who are Leaving a Legacy: Meet the MaxwellsFor the Maxwell family, being a Shriner is a way of life. Mark Maxwell is the administrator of Ainad Shriners in East St. Louis, Ill. He and his four brothers, John, Bob, Mike and Glenn, are also members of Ainad. Mark, his four brothers, his sister, and his son and daughter all worked at the temple as teenagers or young adults. Mark’s father, Russell Maxwell, who started the family legacy, joined the fraternity after returning home from World War II.

Russell was the very first administrator of Ainad Shriners. He was an active member of many of Ainad’s clubs and units, served as temple photographer and editor of the Ainad Bulletin, and played a major part in the temple’s public relations efforts. He also spent several years serving on the Shriners Hospitals for Children — St. Louis® Board of Governors. With a reputation as a hardworking and dedicated Shriner, Russell was widely admired and respected throughout Illinois. According to Mark, Russell helped build the foundation for Ainad’s position today as the seventh largest temple worldwide. Mark said, “My father was the greatest Shriner I’ve ever known.”

Mark and his father have both been noted as being effective spokespersons for the fraternity. Of becoming administrator of Ainad Shriners, Mark said, “it was a natural progression.” Mark has served his temple as administrator for 17 years now. “I truly enjoy being administrator of Ainad; I love every day of it.”

The Maxwell brothers were among the first to formally join the Legacy Program. To them, the program honors the fraternal bond that is so tightly wound around them. “We are very proud to have a family with such a rich history in Shriners International and Ainad,” said Mark.

We encourage all of our legacy families to join the Maxwells and register in the Legacy Program today.
