Reginald James Guier
Egypt Shriners Potentate 2018
Dear Brother Nobles and Ladies,
It is quite an honor that my fellow brothers have given me the opportunity to serve as your 100th
Potentate of Egypt Shriners for the year 2018. Lady Maureen and I look forward to a year of working
with all the members of Egypt Shrine and their Lady’s in all the numerous events planned throughout
the upcoming year. The Egypt Shrine Directory’s will be available at the February Meetings at Centro
Asturiano and will aid you in events and information for this Centennial year. As you read this message
in February, you will have noticed we have brought back the written Sands to best serve the nobility with
the needed communication and notifi cations. This will aide us with our Fund Raising Project, Trips and
notifi cations of upcoming activity’s from the Clubs, Units and the Shrine.
As the year started out with a Great Installation of Offi cers and Reception party we had no lack of fun and
good times as the Trop Rock Junkies played late into the night with a good crowd. The nobility really showed a tremendous support
to our Hospital by Attending and working in various jobs at the Hospital for the East/West Shrine Game Hospital Visit. Special thanks
to the members of the Motor Corp and Pharaohs for escorting the Players to the Hospital. Also the Fun & Frolic for dressing out and
entertaining the kids, The Motor Corp doing double duty by cooking up some great popcorn, Aides for helping out on all levels with
serving food and photo booth and the Tech Saff for the much needed sound and music for the event. Several Nobles from Egypt Shrine
was present to help and enjoy the day with players and the children.
Never forget that “Membership Is Everyone’s Responsibility.” We have a membership team that are willing and able to help us with
bringing in new Masons to be Shrine Masons. Your current Board of Directors are excited to work with the team in all aspects of
membership to increase our fun and members.
The First lady’s project this year is replacing the Circus Trailer. The proceeds from the 100 year Pin, Hat and Good Life Bedsheets will
accomplish this venture. We are at a good start from the Installation with almost twenty-fi ve percent of the funds raised on the fi rst Day
from Pins and Hat sales. Thank you my brothers.
My Brothers, together we can show everyone that this is indeed
the world’s greatest fraternity.
Peace be with you my brothers (Es Selamu Aleikum).

MEMBERSHIP5 for 5 Membership Program Guidelines
‘The Noble’ is the top-line signer (T.L.S.) for FIVE New Candidates who become EGYPT Shriners and each of whom remains current in their payment of dues for a period of FIVE years.
The TLS must have remained current in paying HIS own dues for that same period and not have been suspended during that same period for non-payment of dues.
A ‘new noble’ must remain Egypt Shriners for at least one year prior to transferring membership to another Shrine Center to qualify under the program.
Should any of the ‘new Nobles’ resign their membership or be suspended for non-payment of dues, that ‘new noble’ will no longer be included in this incentive program. The TLS must nominate a new candidate and that replacement candidate must remain a Noble as described above for 5 years, as well as the TLS’s other candidates.
When the TLS has nominated fi ve Shriners who remain current in the payment of their dues for fi ve years, he will receive a Life Membership at a stated meeting.
This program commenced January 1, 2015. It is NOT retroactive!

Scottish Rite NewsBy Worshipful Casey Fletcher 32°, KCCH
In last year’s missives, we took a tour through several
writings of Plutarch of Chaeronea (45-120) and
examined one each from Sir Thomas More (1478-
1516) and Epictetus (circa 50-130 CE); along the way
we mentioned Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855),
Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) and David Hume (1711-
1776). Their ideas and propositions are found in our
ritual work. Our ancient brethren read these sages’
works, perhaps we should, too.
As we journey into a new year, perhaps a refreshing
of perspective could be helpful; perspective on
what we, as Masons, “came here to do,” what are
we doing?
We previously proposed the notion that
Freemasonry is the study of philosophy and the
pursuit of wisdom (see September, 2016 article).
“Freemasonry’s ‘system of morality’ might be the
practice of philosophy; a never-ending search for
Truth – a quest to get things “right” – right in our
lives, families, lodges and society.”
Our pursuits require the acquisition of knowledge,
the accumulation of facts, the study of history and
the examination of inherited beliefs. We learn a lot,
but the point is not necessarily to become smarter
(though that is good), but to become wiser.
Our journey has some traps and pitfalls, as Professor
David Kyle Johnson of King’s College highlights in
his lecture series “The Big Questions of Philosophy.”
First, he cautions against individual relativism, that
notion that we can all have our own truth. He calls it
the “coward’s way out.” Individual relativism requires
no eff ort, inquiry and contemplation. It is unlikely to
produce any progress toward wisdom.
Next is an admonishment to avoid cultural relativism.
The fact that a large group of people think something
is true, does not make it so; there may have been no
more rational inquiry into the subject matter by the
group than by the individual.
Johnson also discusses moral relativism. Moral
questions are probably the hardest; their Truths the
most elusive. The diffi culty of the topic, he asserts,
does not make morality and ethics relative; it just
makes our task harder.
We seek Truth. As we participate in Freemasonry in
the coming year, let us refresh our perspective, that
our search for Further Light, our pursuit of Wisdom
is, substantively, the practice of philosophy. This
Truth we seek is not “relative” in any sense.
Truth, it has been suggested, is like a mathematical
equation – there is only one correct answer. Humility
must be maintained to recognize that some answers
are closer than others; so, we should keep checking
our arithmetic, so to speak, as we journey through
the year.
The next Scottish Rite Reunion is May 5 and 6,
2018. Degrees will also be conferred on March 12th,
May 14th, July 9th and August 13th. Petitions for
membership can be found at http://tampascottishrite.
org.
The Valley of Tampa regularly meets at its Center in
Tampa on the 2nd Monday of each month. Dinner
is served at 5:45 PM. At our February 12th meeting,
RW Joseph Gonzalez 320 KCCH will present an
educational program.
Casey Fletcher is Past Master of Tuscan Lodge No. 6 in Bartow, Florida. He notes that the study of philosophy, like that of mathematics and arithmetic, is not so easy.

The Rebound Advanced Concussion Center (RACC)
at the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children Tampa is a
pediatric specialty clinic providing state-of-the-art
diagnosis and treatment for concussion. We provide
care for children from infancy up to 18 years old. At
the clinic, your child will be seen by a specialized
team of professionals.
Sands Magazine - February 2018 • 7
Richard Radecki, M.D., a pediatric rehabilitation
specialist, leads a multidisciplinary team including
pediatric nurse practitioners, physical, occupational
and speech therapists.
Together, the team provides comprehensive year
round care addressing sports and non-sports related
concussions.
Dr. Radecki will assess for treatment needs including
return to sports and school. Based on symptoms, a
treatment plan will be established and begun on the
following week. This allows the brain time to rest.
The Rebound Advanced Concussion Center
provides this care to all children, regardless of their
families’ ability to pay.
The average person’s therapy lasts three weeks
after which they usually can return to full activity.
You will work with therapists certifi ed in vision and
balance needs. Therapists will use highly specialized
equipment to maximize recovery.
Progress will be monitored by Dr. Radecki and the
decision to return to normal activity will be based
on test results, therapists’ assessments and Dr.
Radecki’s expert experience.
Complete services include:
• School sports physicals with ImPACT testing, considered a standard of care in identifying and diagnosing concussions,
• Cutting edge vision and balance therapy,• Physical, occupational and speech therapy, • Collaboration with schools and teachers to
determine the appropriateness of a return to school and to sports.

Shriners Hospitals for Children: A History of Innovation and Excellence in Burn Care
Shriners Hospitals for Children® is noted worldwide as a leader in pediatric burn care. Since opening our three pediatric burn hospitals in the 1960s, our health care system has been at the forefront of innovative programs and treatment techniques that have both dramatically improved the survival rate for children with severe burns and enhanced their quality of life.
Here is a brief timeline of the development of our burn care program:
1960s: In response to the growing awareness of a need for pediatric burn care, research and education, the governing body of the Shriners organization passed a resolution at the Imperial Session in 1962 to build and operate hospitals specializing in pediatric burn care. The first one opened in 1966 in Galveston, Texas, followed by those in Cincinnati and Boston two years later. The establishment of these hospitals helped raise awareness of burn injuries and appropriate care throughout the medical community.
1970s: Tremendous improvements in survival rates were made, particularly because of innovative research in excision, grafting, and intravenous feeding. In addition, pressure garments that helped lessen scarring were developed. Shriners Hospitals for Children — Cincinnati pioneered skin banking – a precursor to future methods of tissue, bone and skin procurement. In addition Shriners Hospitals for Children worked with the United States Fire Administration and Consumer Product Safety Commission to identify burn prevention programs for schools and fire departments. And finally, our Boston hospital began the first school re-entry program for patients.
1980s: Outpatient clinics were added at the three burn hospitals to provide continued care after patients are discharged. Also, researchers at Shriners Hospitals for Children discovered that early surgical excision and grafting reduces infections, shortens hospital stays and improves cosmetic outcomes for patients. Finally, Burn Awareness Week, a national education campaign, was
created in an effort to raise public awareness and reduce the number of burn injuries in children.
1990s: Services were expanded at our burn hospitals. Care was made available for non-burn conditions such as port wine stains, congenital ear deformities and other complex wound and skin conditions. In addition, new programs were set up to help burn patients with psychological and social issues, including transitioning back to school and community. And, in 1997, Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California opened in Sacramento to serve children with orthopaedic conditions, burns and spinal cord injuries. The hospital has become the busiest pediatric burn center in the western U.S.
2000 - 2010s: Shriners Hospitals for Children continues to demonstrate and be recognized for their leadership in burn care. The hospitals in Boston and Cincinnati received the Press Ganey Summit Award for extraordinary patient satisfaction. All four burn hospitals have leaders who have served as president of the American Burn Association and three of the hospitals have hosted or co-hosted the World Burn Congress, an annual event of the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors that brings together approximately 800 burn survivors and their families, caregivers, burn care professionals and firefighters to share experiences and support one another.
In the years and decades to come, Shriners Hospitals for Children expects to continue its leadership in pediatric burn care, and its long-standing legacy of improving the lives of children.

For many men, being a Shriner is a family tradition. From one generation to the next, Shriners have enjoyed a unique brotherhood and shared in an important mission.
The Shriners Legacy Program is a way to show your pride in being a Shriner and to celebrate your part in the special brotherhood that comes from membership.

• Fathers • Grandfathers • Brothers • Uncles• Sons • Grandsons • Nephews • In-laws
Be a part of special Legacy events.Temples will be encouraged to host Legacy nights to honor members of the program. Legacy members in all generations will be invited to participate in a variety of fun events and activities with their family members and fellow nobles.
Wear your Legacy pin with pride. To show our gratitude for you and your family continuing the Shriners legacy, Shriners International has designed an elegant gold pin that showcases your pride in your Shriners heritage. The Shriners Legacy pin will become available in two phases.

Shriners Village is the Web-based community created exclusively for the Shriners family. Fraternity members and their ladies can visit www.shrinersvillage.com to find information about Shriners Hospitals for Children®, fraternal programs, membership, temples, Shrine-related events and breaking news.
The website contains useful fraternity documents for nobles to download, such as the Fez Owners Manual, Membership Toolkit, Shriner Primer, Shrine Protocol and a pamphlet about the history of Shriners International. In its short existence, Shriners Village has become the communication engine for Shriners International.
“Given that there are 325,000 nobles all over the world, Shriners Village is a fantastic outlet for the fraternity to relay information to its nobility,” said Jack Jones, executive vice president of Shriners International. “It is also a great way for Shriners to learn from one another so they can help their temples succeed.”
Shriners Village also has an Events section with information about temple fundraisers and other activities. Any registered user has permission to post an event on the events calendar by clicking on the “Events” tab and then fi nding the “Events Calendar” on the left column of the page. To add an event, use the “Add Event” tab and then click the “Submit Event” button after the form has been fi lled out.
The Shriners Village development team will be adding new features to the website on a regular basis. One of the features will be member profi les, where nobles can upload photos and their information similar to Facebook. This new addition will make it possible for Shriners to fi nd and contact other members. Also in the works is a new forum feature which will allow nobles to share ideas and thoughts in a private discussion area.
Visit www.shrinersvillage.com and register so you can be a part of Shriners’ virtual community.
