Principal’s Message

Students are encouraged to continue with the online Sporting activities on their Year Adviser platforms and

should aim to complete all SIX TASKS by the end of the term.

Our Year 12 interviews have started and we are supporting the girls to achieve their educational goals and plan

for their career aspirations.

Year 10 Subject Selection is underway and I hope you are all discussing the information presented with your

daughters. Individual interviews will be scheduled for Weeks 9 and 10. Ms Maharaj has organised an outstand-

ing program that will facilitate discussion, knowledge of the HSC and ATAR requirements and courses offered at

our school. It is essential that every student reflects on their academic performance and future aspirations to

ensure that they make informed decisions that will allow them to achieve their personal best.

Year 11 reports have been finalised and will be distributed via the students on Wednesday, 10 June.

The school has introduced a new financial system called School Bytes for parents to be able to view student

statements of account. This is a secure platform which operates through the Department of Education Westpac

Parent Online Payment (POP) System. Please find, on the following pages, further information to support you

with accessing this new platform.

All parents will receive an email with an adjusted Statement of Account next week.

The support of all parents is requested in the payment of subject fees, P & C contributions and all outstanding

excursions and sport fees.

These, together, enable this school to provide a continuing high standard of education for all girls, and cover or

supplement costs associated with materials used in class, maintenance and upgrade of property and fittings,

and the provision of wider educational opportunities, many of which involve learning experiences beyond the

classroom.

This school has always enjoyed very high levels of parent prioritising of fee payments, and I thank you sincerely

for all your support in allowing us to maintain our high standards. I ask that this support continues. I know that

no parents will want anything other than a high-quality education for their daughters. Thank you, in

anticipation!

Have a wonderful long weekend.

SRC Report

Congratulations SRC 2020!

We would like to congratulate our newly elected SRC leaders! Due to the unforeseen circumstances this year,

we have had to put our leadership assembly on hold. The SRC aims to build leadership skills, resilience and con-

fidence in our students.

We work as a team to generate whole school initiatives that are beneficial to our school community and exter-

nal organisations. Moreover, we actively engage in the local community to strengthen our community partner-

ships with the local council and local schools. So far, a few of our students attended the International Women’s

Day morning tea at Strathfield town hall and listened to some inspiring speeches by empowering women. Our

leaders have also taken part in the ‘Clean up Australia day’ initiative last term where the student body took part

in a whole school clean up. Some of our SRC leaders walked along Albert Rd down to the local plaza to clean up

our local community. We look forward to all the great initiatives this year!

Book Review

Mr Cordi’s Book Recommendation

White Teeth – Zadie Smith (2000)

Zadie Smith was only 24 when she published her debut novel, White Teeth. Smith deals with the British post-colonial diaspora with affectionate irreverence, and what she has achieved in this novel is thoroughly entertaining. It’s brimming with characters, and her style is very fast-paced, having been described as “hysterical realism”. Whilst the novel is definitely laugh-out-loud funny, Smith still manages to provoke food for thought. The story centres on the unlikely friendship between Englishman Archibald Jones and Bangladeshi Samad Iqbal and their families in London during the latter part of the 20th century. I loved the references to religion, tradition, race, politics, marriage and family – and the conflicting perspectives of the many characters. Samad’s struggle with his faith and how it impacts his family life is engrossing. It has been voted by Time Magazine as of the 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005, and ranked 39th on The Guardian's list of the 100 best books of the 21st century, and for very good reasons, I think.

TAS Report

Year 8 Technology Online Teaching Success Story Our year 8 Engineered Systems Technology classes have created some excellent Rubber Band Powered Race Car prototypes, and this week some of them got to have a race. Each student had to create a prototype out of the materials they had at hand during the Covid19 learning from home period (no easy task) and the results were spectacular. We are very proud of their efforts and what they have created. It was a lesson in engineering and in resourcefulness, and our girls succeeded magnificently. Here are some photos of 8I during their races.

Wellbeing Reports

The SGHS Prefects resume Breakfast Club this week. At SGHS, we recognise the importance of Breakfast

for students to perform at their best in their studies. During this COVID19 situation, the school has en-

forced new rules to prevent cross-contamination between students such as:

Each student will be making their own breakfast.

The prefects will be supervising students as they make their breakfast.

The prefects will ensure a 1.5 m distance between all students or will allow only a few students into

the senior room at a time.

All students will be provided with disposable gloves before they make their breakfast. Hand sanitiser

will also be available.

Year 7 Newsletter– Ms Creevey

This week has been our second full week back at school and gosh are we excited to be back! We have had a

wonderful week playing with our friends at lunch and recess and being back in real classrooms with our

teachers standing in front of us. In Vitae over the last 2 weeks each of the classes has had the opportunity to

focus on stress. We learnt that stress is our body’s reaction in scary or unknown situations and have discov-

ered ways to deal with some of the stress that may have arisen over the last few weeks. Overall it has been a

great week and we are excited to come back next Tuesday and continue our learning!

Year 9- Ms Lee I would like to introduce our Year 9 SRC (Students’ Representative Council) Leaders for 2020. This year we have 8 SRC leaders and they are Jessica Cocking, Mariam Issa, Khushi Jain, Nayoung Lee, Mary Ma, Jimin Song, Ashvita Sritharan and Jegataruni Thiruchenthil Rajan. I am very glad to have such a bright and tal-ented group of students who have really demonstrated their leadership skills in this week’s year meeting. They reinforced the importance of wearing correct uniforms to school, spoke about National Reconcilia-tion Week and organised a piano performance by Queenie Chen. I hope they continue to develop and re-fine their leadership skills this year.

Year 12- Mr Koulouris

This Week Year 12 received their UAC guide to stay informed and update with pursuing tertiary education for 2021 and beyond. They have all been busy researching courses and universities, some planning with friends to continue studying together. The opportunities are endless, with some students showing interest to study overseas!

Exciting news as our end of year activities seem to be slowly coming together with our Yearbook com-mittee continuing to design and collate our memories, experiences and profiles for the SGHS Yearbook. As well as this, the Formal committee has been actively planning for the Year 12 formal in November with news that it will be going ahead. As diligently our girls have been researching tertiary education to find the perfect option for them. They are now equally busy scrolling online shopping to find the perfect dress for formal.
