The Pastor’s Corner

This Wednesday (Valentines Day!) we begin our 40 day season of penance and preparation. Mark, with his usual succinctness, describes Jesus 40 days in the desert in two lines: “The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan. He was among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him.” This presence of the angels ministering to Jesus guides us into this season of grace. God has extraordinary plans in store for us and we need all the help we can get. Just as Jesus received help from the angels in his time of trial so also we ask the angels for assistance as we enter this time of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. In the Catholic tradition we are familiar with invoking our guardian angel for assistance and protection. In addition, Saint Michael is foremost among the angels as prince of the heavenly hosts, called upon as our defense in this battle we set out to wage. This last year, we celebrated Our Lady of Fatima in her hundredth anniversary. Remarkably, 33 years prior to Fatima’s Miracle of the Sun, Pope Leo XIII composed a prayer to be prayed at Masses everywhere. Known today as the Saint Michael Prayer, Leo’s invocation remains one of our most powerful prayers today. As a community entering this Lenten season, we can call upon this supernatural assistance. Before each Mass, starting with Ash Wednesday, we can pray Pope Leo’s Saint Michael prayer, knowing that God has sent us assistance in the combat we face. Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who wander throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Amen.

PARISH NEWS

Annual Catholic Appeal

The 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal is our annual tradition that connects us to thousands of people who need our help every day. Our generous gifts to the Appeal help children find safety and hope, families break through desperate situations, marginalized individuals find the strength to rebuild lives of dignity, students in economically challenged communities remain in Catholic school, and seminarians prepare for priestly service in our parishes. We may not be social workers, yet we are at the heart of mercy when we put our resources in the hands of social service programs and parish ministries that help lift people out of poverty. Please be as generous as you can. Every gift makes a difference.

C & M Publications

around the world. Please be generous.

This Sunday, the 11th at the 10 am Mass the Rite of Acceptance is taking place for 5 children in Faith Formation. They are being asked What do they want to become (a Christian); Why do they want to become a Christian (because they believe in Christ); and What do they gain by believing in Christ (Eternal life!). Pretty Awesome!

Next weekend, 17th and 18th, the Catechumens and some Candidates from RCIA will be at the 5 pm Mass on the 17th for the Rite of Sending (for the unbaptized) and the Rite of Recognition (for the baptized). This is the community's opportunity to express our approval of the catechumens and candidates, sending them forth to the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion the next day with our bishop at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Sacramento. The unbaptized are now called the Elect, those that are baptized have already been chosen/elected. This Election and Enrollment of Names marks the beginning of the period of final, more intense preparation for the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist). They will now enter into the period of Purification and Enlightenment which ends with their sacraments at the Easter Vigil. To learn more about the RCIA process visit https://acmrcia.org/

Prayer warriors, please continue to pray for the children, teens and adults in RCIA. If you'd like to become a prayer warrior for the Catechumens and Candidates in the program, please spend some time in adoration for them. Check out the bulletin board in the back of the Church to see the names of those receiving sacraments at the Easter Vigil.
