This month’s cover photo contest winner: Jeanine McLeod

Congratulations to this month’s Cover Contest winner, Jeanine McLeod. She receives a $25 gift

card. The winner of the Hidden Picture Contest is Allison Alfonso. Also, the recipient of a $25 gift card. The hidden blue egg was on page 11 in the Remax ad. In this issue, you will be looking for a small yellow flower. Remember, it is in an ad, not the editorial.

There are a ton of fun events coming in May and early June. Check inside for details.

Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, on Mother’s Day, stop and take some time: Mothers are our protectors, our teachers, our guides through life. Most of them pour their hearts into their children, celebrating the successes and suffering in empathy through the heartbreaks.

And they no longer do it with the luxury of staying home with their kids. The majority of women work outside the home, a financial necessity in these times. Yet, in many households, they still carry the lioness’ share of the work and worry.

Today, on Mother’s Day, we have a designated chance to share our appreciation for all they have done, for the kisses, the care, the advice, for all they do to try to make our lives easier.

We will celebrate with cards, special meals, gifts and flowers. But most mothers will tell you that what they want most is time. As we grow up and get involved with our own lives and families, it sometimes gets harder to break away enough time to just sit and talk, to laugh over childhood memories or to help out with jobs that need to be done. So, take the time this Mother’s Day (and everyday), because someday, there will be no time.

Have a wonderful May and send us all your community pictures to share and possibly win the Cover Photo Contest!

May is Better Hearing Month

You may have a problem with your hearing and need to see an audiologist if you have

trouble hearing conversation in a noisy environment such as a restaurant, are unable to hear people talk to you without looking at them, or have a constant ringing or pain in your ears.

The first step in treatment of a hearing problem is a hearing evaluation by an audiologist. Although most hearing loss is permanent, an audiologist can determine the best treatment, which

may include hearing aids, assistive listening devices, and hearing rehabilitation.

As part of Better Hearing Month, Florida Medical Clinic is hosting an open house at both of their Audiology offices in Wesley Chapel, 27634 Cashford Circle and in Zephyrhills, 38103 Market Square, on Tuesday, May 8th and Wednesday, May 9th. Appointments are necessary, please call 813.973.8400 or 813.788.8959 to reserve your scheduled time. v

CDD InFORMaTIOnSeven OakSBy Bill Parsons Vice Chairman, Seven Oaks CDD

V ivicon which had been in business since 1989 has been the Seven Oaks landscape contractor since Crown Community

Development hired them in 2002. When Crown needed a landscaper for the areas of Seven Oaks that they had developed, they asked for bids and the following three landscaping companies bid on the proposal: Vivicon ($217,361), Stewart & Associates ($233,460), and Sunrise Landcare ($309,433). As Crown continued to develop Seven Oaks, the amount of common area that needed to be landscaped grew. Each time a new area was added to their contract, Vivicon would increase their price to cover the additional landscaping maintenance requirement so the $217,361 has continued to increase. Last year, we paid Vivicon $981,476.64 for landscaping maintenance of Seven Oaks.

Vivicon employs 30-35 full time employees to handle 21 contracts in both Hillsborough and Pasco Counties. For Seven Oaks, Ken Roth, who is

President of Vivicon and has a Horticulturist Degree from Purdue University, hired Bill Conrad to su-pervise the Seven Oaks landscaping project. During April - October, Bill supervises about 11-13 Vivicon

employees at Seven Oaks five days a week to do the mowing, edging, and trimming. In addition, there are another 10-12 employees two days a week to mow, edge, and trim the parks.

LandscapingSeven OakS

Vivicon uses a lift bucket to trim the palm trees twice a year.

Vivicon replaces annual flowers in front of the neighborhoods, entrances to Seven Oaks, and traffic circles three times a year. In 2009, the CDD eliminated annual

flowers in the islands on the main roads which saves $30,000 per year.

CDD InFORMaTIOnSeven OakSThe pictures on this page show Vivicon employees mowing, trimming, and spraying insecticides. Some projects such as replacing annual flowers, trimming palm trees, and adding mulch are only done a few times a year. Although Vivicon does not maintain our irrigation system, they work closely with the CDD employees who do maintain it. For example, if they see some grass starting to turn brown, they will alert the irrigation maintenance people. It also works in reverse in case the irrigation maintenance people see a poten-tial problem with the landscaping. vLandscaping

Some Things, I Think, I Think.I think that sometimes, my

articles are taken the wrong way. I may be coming across as a

curmudgeon, always telling people what they need to be doing. I’m of-ten writing about folks who ignore the deed restrictions, etc. Actually, I do try to keep things light and not take myself too seriously. Lord knows my wife doesn’t!

However, it’s very easy to get into the complaining mode based on some of the issues that are brought up at the board meetings. I think it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that we live in one of the premier real estate locations in the northern Tampa Bay area. Many of the folks that I know who are in the real estate business agree. We’ve all taken a hit in the recession and in the housing market in particular. And while I think that we’d all like to see a quicker, stronger recovery, from

what I can tell, our Seven Oaks has weathered the down turn better than a lot of other developments in our area. I’ve driven through a number of neighborhoods / developments in the general New Tampa area. I have yet to find one that can compare to Seven Oaks. I know that I’m prejudiced being a homeowner and on the SOPOA Board but I honestly have not seen any neighborhood that I’m more impressed with than where we live right now. Almost any way you look at it, Sev-en Oaks is a beautiful place to live. The grounds and common areas are well maintained and ascetically pleasing. The Club House and espe-cially the pool facilities remind me of an exclusive resort setting. There are activities available at the Club for nearly everyone. There are classes from A to Zumba so you can find something to do, no matter what

your interests are. The mini-parks / playgrounds in the subdivisions are great. I often take my grandkids to the one in Willowstone when they come to visit.

Again, they are well maintained and well equipped. I think the folks on the CDD Board should be con-gratulated for doing a fantastic job of keeping the community looking like the upscale neighborhood it was designed to be. We’re close to schools, churches, shopping and a major transporta-tion artery. Sure, I know there’s a lot of infrastructure construction going on right now along Bruce B. Downs and I 275 and I 75 cor-ridors. It’s been going on for some time but I’m told it will be done sooner than later and will be a great improvement. The new hospital on Bruce B. Downs will be complete in the fall of this year. Hopefully it will

bring new jobs and increased home values to our area. The Water Mark subdivision is almost built out and there is new construction in the northern area of Seven Oaks. Lastly, we have a lot of great folks who are actively in-volved, giving their time and talent to the community, trying to make it better than it already is. I think that in future articles I’ll probably go back to telling folks they need to do whatever to prevent the dreaded “Friendly Letter”. But I promise, from time to time to focus on the many positives of living in Seven Oaks. Just some things, I think I think…

COMMUnITy News

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay is reminding the community of its vision

that all kids have the opportunity to reach their full potential, and they’re asking for your help. The agency pairs volunteer mentors with children facing adversity, so that local youth in Pasco, Polk and Hillsborough Counties have the one-to-one guidance they need—guidance that leads to academic success and positive choices.

Big Brothers Big Sisters matches “Bigs” (mentors) with “Littles” (mentees) throughout Pasco County, and it has two programs it’s specifically recruiting for right now, thanks to grant funding provided by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Preven-tion. One program targets at-risk youth, ages 9 and up, who live in Dade City. Another program is called Operation Bigs—a new ef-fort to provide mentors to children (also ages 9 and up) in military families. While many of the children served by Big Brothers Big Sisters are in single-parent and low-income households, that’s not always the case. “Operation Bigs is our newest men-toring program, and provides sup-port for many single and two-parent

military families who appreciate the opportunity to provide their child with more academic support as well as new cultural and other opportuni-ties from another trusted adult,” says Stephen Koch, CEO and Presi-dent of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay. To find out more about this free program, contact Shannon Dombkowski 813-769-3610 or [email protected].

Big Brothers Big Sisters is the old-est and most successful mentor-ing organization in the country,

and it holds itself accountable for demonstrating positive academic and social outcomes for the children served. Last year, in Pasco, Polk and Hillsborough Counties:

• 96% of our Littles were promoted to the next grade level

• 95% showed an increase in self-confidence

• 99% had no involvement in the juvenile justice system

The agency depends on commu-nity support, in the form of both volunteers and donations, in order

to achieve these results. It costs ap-proximately $1,000 a year to make and maintain a match between a Big and a Little, to cover background checks and ongoing professional support services.

The Seven Oaks Community is invited to learn more about the power of mentoring and to sup-port children in Pasco County by attending the “Start Some-thing Big and Be Counted” Pas-co fundraising luncheon, which takes place June 7th, 11:30 am to 1 pm at the Pebble Creek Golf Club. If you’d like to attend the Pasco luncheon, become a mentor or donate to support mentoring, call Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay at 813-997-6881 or enroll online www.bbbsfl.org. v

BuSIneSS SPOTLIGHT

where else can you go to find ladybugs and teddy bear

hospitals alongside mummies and dinosaurs? Why Museum Of Science and Industry, of course! Summer is right around the corner, and MOSI is gearing up for its Summer Science Camps for kids in preschool through high school. Camps start on June 11 and continue throughout the summer. Whether they are preparing their very own green slime, building and launching rockets from junk, or mixing up potions in their very own Hogwarts, it’s always fun seeing young people learn while having a blast. On the other end of MOSI, IMAX® audiences can be transported to one of the most remote and spectacularly beautiful places in the world. Viewers will experience an emotional story of love, family and hope with the

documentary adventure “To The Arctic,” now playing at the MOSI IMAX® Dome Theatre.

Additionally, the Mummies of the World exhibition has debuted at the Museum of Science & Industry. With its astounding collection of 150 specimens and objects, Mummies of the World is the largest exhibition of real human and animal mummies ever assembled.

Portraying over 45 real mummies from South America, Europe, Asia, Oceania as well ancient Egypt, Mummies of the World will forever change your perception of mummies. Through modern science and engaging interactives, the exhibition reveals how the scientific study of mummies provides a window into the lives of ancient people from every

region of the world, offering insights into past cultures and civilizations. And if you still have energy to spare, check out MOSI’s new Sky Trail Ropes Course, which features 36 elements on a 12 – 36 foot high, multilevel structure. The Ropes Course is designed with challenging high-energy feats ideal for all ages. And, coming in June, MOSI will

open its Sky Trail Zip Line. Check the website periodically at www.mosi.org for opening dates and times.

Management and the staff of Seven Oaks take pride in maintaining our facilities. We would like to keep our reputation in good standing so we are asking for your help in order to keep our pools in operating condition for the entire season. Yes, there are times that we may have to close a pool during peek hours due to a safety issue and /or other conditions that we can’t control.

However, with your help we can control age appropriate children to be geared with a water resistant swim diaper to prevent anyone from receiving a recreational water illness (RWI). All of our pools are properly chlorinated and checked throughout the day, but even at perfect levels it takes time for chlorine to kill contaminants that may be in the water. This is why we ask that you please help us keep our pools safe by following the guidelines regarding small children and the appropriate swimwear. We thank you all for your cooperation and understanding, and we all look forward to a fun-filled summer.

In the event that you forget to gear up your children with a swim diaper, you can conveniently purchase an age appropriate, water resistant swim diaper from the Clubhouse.

The Derek Pieper has hosted Lacrosse teams from as far away as Canada! The amazing growth and success of the WCAA could not be possible without our volunteers. Over 300 volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks such as coaching a team or keeping the organization’s financials. The General Board of Directors is the primary governing body of the WCAA consisting of about 25 individuals. Positions on the Board consist of the individual Sport Directors as well as administrative positions such as the Treasurer, President and Vice President. All Board positions are elected positions with a two-year term.

The WCAA is currently in discussions with Pasco County to expand programs and services. A number of topics are in ongoing discussions, such as the possibility of building an indoor gymnasium at the Wesley Chapel District Park. An indoor gymnasium would allow

the WCAA to offer additional sports programs such as volleyball, indoor basketball, wrestling and other indoor activities. We invite your input regarding such matters: please write us at [email protected]! Wesley Chapel for nearly 12 years. As a volunteer run organization, the WCAA has thrived and grown over the years now serving over 3,500 families and offering 7 unique sports programs for area youth. As an organization, the WCAA had very humble beginnings; dating back to 2000 when Wesley Chapel was a one stoplight town (OK – maybe two.) In those days, finding facilities to host sporting events was difficult as county recreational facilities were virtually non-existent.

A group of parents banded together to form the WCAA and began

offering flag football leagues on any open field available. In time, the programs grew along with Wesley Chapel itself. WCAA volunteers petitioned the county to build a park to host sports programs for the WCAA. In time, the county agreed there was a need for a park and decided to build the Wesley Chapel District Park where the WCAA now operates.

When the park was opened, the WCAA invested over $ 100,000 to prepare the park to host WCAA programs. Today, WCAA offers soccer, baseball, softball, basketball, lacrosse, flag football, tackle football and cheerleading at the park. In addition, the WCAA hosts several

fRoM THe ExPERTS

People almost always recog-nize the pink colored ribbons printed on shirts, towels,

coffee cups, or just about anything. That distinct pink ribbon has become uniquely identified with breast cancer. Breast cancer, two words no woman wants to hear in her doctor’s office. But as scary as these words may be there is hope.

Breast cancer treatment has evolved significantly over the past two decades. Advances in breast cancer research and improved technol-ogy have turned a once devastating diagnosis into a treatable disease. Paramount in achieving this is early detection.

For this reason, Dr. Collins cannot stress enough to women 40 years of age and older the importance of yearly mammograms. Breast cancer most often presents without

symptoms which is why screening mammography is an important tool for early detection.

When a diagnosis of breast cancer is made Dr. Collins reminds her patients that there are treatment options. This disease does not affect everyone the same and treatment is not “one size fits all.” Surgical treat-ment options are much improved and do not always require complete removal of the breast (mastectomy).

Most patients have the option of breast conservation therapy where only the cancerous portion of the breast is removed. Even in cases where mastectomy is required women now have various options available for breast reconstruction.

Most of these surgical treatments can be offered by Dr. Collins and the facilities at Florida Medical

Clinic. But it should be kept in mind that cancer treatment is best achieved through a team approach where many doctors from different specialties come togeth-er to provide a treatment plan for an individual patient. Dr. Collins will work with physicians in other specialties at the Florida Medical Clinic to offer comprehensive care to her patients.

At Florida Medical Clinic Dr. R. Collins will perform surgeries including breast surgery, advanced laparoscopic procedures, intestinal surgery, hernia repairs, gall bladder surgery, skin cancer removal, wound care, and port placements, to name a few.

For patient convenience, Dr. Collins is available in two locations: Zephyrhills, 813-780-8160 and Tampa, 813-979-7707.

They sat with backs erect, instru-ments poised to play. Slowly, in unison, they turned their

attention to their conductor. Purpose-fully his extended arms rose up. First I heard the horns, woodwinds sounded, strings joined in followed by that impressive looking and sounding tuba. Percussion and keyboards sounded a beat. Was that a xylophone I heard? The musical tones of 58 musicians swelled the church hall. So began the weekly rehearsal of the Wesley Chapel Wind Ensemble.

The Ensemble is a performance based concert band whose members are committed to community service. Musicians range in age from 12 to 85 years. Their weekly practice prepares them for seasonal concerts which benefit local communities. Band includes adults who are returning after time away and professional musicians. Students come from Land O’Lakes, Pasco, Wiregrass, Wesley Chapel and Zephyrhills High Schools. RB Stewart and Thomas E. Weightman Middle Schools and home schooled students complete the band.

The Wesley Chapel Wind Ensemble Showcasing the Arts, which is a char-ity event that benefits Fine Arts of the Suncoast’s ‘Arts for Kids’ programs,

will be May 20th at 3 pm. This program supports and preserves art programs in Pasco County middle and high schools. It also supports enrichment opportunities for art teachers who bring that experience into their classrooms. It will be held at the Center for the Arts at Wesley Chapel, 30651 Wells Road, Wesley Chapel, 33545.

Arts in Motion theater players will open the event. Musical acts include the Jazz Band, Dixieland Band, Brass Ensemble, Woodwind Quintet, and finishes with the full Concert Band. Expect to be dazzled by these professional and student musicians performing together. Several student artists will also be displaying their art work at the event.

Refreshments will be available for purchase. Raffle tickets for a variety of prizes will also be available in advance or at the event for $5.

Advertisement pages are available for purchase in our program, deadline is May 8th. Ads can be purchased on our website www.wesleychapel-windensemble.com Tickets can be pre-purchased on our website at www.wesleychapelwindensemble.com or purchased at the door for $5. v

Overnight camps are offered throughout June and July at two of the council’s camp properties, and day camps are offered throughout the eight counties GSWCF serves – there’s something for every girl! Non-Girl Scouts are welcome to register for summer camp, and many girls join each year through the camp pathway as part of the new-age mem-bership model of Girl Scouts. Girls who join at the time of summer camp pay a one-time, annual membership fee of $12. GSWCF-owned Camps Dorothy Thomas, Scoutcrest and Wildwood are American Camp Association (ACA)

accredited; three of 16 ACA-accredited camps within a 100 mile radius of Tampa, according to the ACA website Horseback riding, water skiing, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), healthy living, arts and crafts, and swimming are among the many activities offered at Girl Scout summer camps. Can’t decide on just one? Not quite sure about sleeping away for a week? Girls can customize their camp experiences. All sessions include sports, nature exploration, and arts and crafts, and campfires for a well-rounded camp experience. If parents are looking for a safe, secure, nurturing all-girl environment where girls of all ages are taught respect for self and others, and have amazing opportunities to explore their passions – Girl Scout camp is the place for your daughter. Girl Scout camp sessions are also very affordable with pricing start-ing at $75/girl for day camp and $175/

girl for overnight camp.

Girl Scout summer camp programs encompass a rich history of 100 years of pro-viding outdoor experiences for girls. Juliette Gordon Low founded Girl Scouts in 1912 on the premise that girls should be given the opportunity to develop physically, mentally and spiritually. Under her guid-ance, she encouraged girls to get out of their home environments and into the open air. The first Girl Scouts hiked, played basketball, went on camping trips and learned to tell time by the stars. “One hundred years later, girls are still having a blast at camp!” said Kim Jow-ell, CEO, GSWCF. “One of my favorite times of year is going out to our summer camps to interact with girls. I see girls of all ages arrive at camp somewhat shy and

hesitant about the days ahead, but after several days of the Girl Scout camp ex-perience, they leave more self-confident, with new friends and truly exhausted from all the activities!” v Visit www.gswcf.org/summercamp to view the 2012 Girl Scout Sum-mer Camp guide and take a peek at Camps Scoutcrest and Wildwood. Registration for summer camps is available online at www.gswcf.org/

And What a Roundup it was!!

You could feel the excitement in the air as the PTSA along with all the volunteers set up for the Roundup Carnival Friday night. The games and activities came alive as the music started. There was a flurry of activity as kids went from the hamster ball, to lasertag, to surf machine, to joust-ing, to mechanical bull, to trying to dunk a teacher in the dunk tank.

The dancing on the basketball court went on well past sundown. Many tested their voices at the karaoke mics, as the arrows flew at the Hunger Games archery. Playing the many games made lots of people hungry for the pizza, Moe’s Mexi-can fare, Smoothie King, Bruster’s

ice cream, not to mention the cotton candy and popcorn!

Congratulations PTSA for a fantastic carnival and many thanks to all our volunteers and sponsors who we couldn’t have done without!! An extra-special thanks to Peggy D’Alessandro for her coordination of this year’s event!

nO ExCUSES TOUR - TaKE ME OUT TO THE BaLL GaME

Is the cost of gas and parking keeping you from going to Rays games at Tropicana Field? Para-dise World Transportation offers a luxury shuttle bus to Tropi-cana Field that covers roundtrip transportation for just $9.95 per person. This is a stunning deal for residents of New Tampa (or insert Wesley Chapel for SO and MP). Save your money! Gas prices are nearly $4.00/gallon and parking can be expensive, which makes

this offer a steal. The event has been coined the No Excuses Tour, and there should be no excuses to get to the game at this price.

The luxury shuttle bus departs from the Lee Roy Selmon’s restaurants in both New Tampa and South Tampa and takes you directly to Tropicana Field, where the Rays play their home games. Riders can bring their own food and drinks for the bus ride. The luxury shuttle buses are clean, stylish and can seat 29 passengers. Each bus provides an on-time arrival, using state of the art navigational equipment and even offers iPod capability so you can enjoy your favorite tunes on the way to the game.

There really is no excuse to not get out of the house for a night of fun and entertainment for all age groups. For more information visit www.NoExcusesTour.com to get all the details and order your tickets in advance. v

LIvESTRoNg SPINATHoN

The New Tampa Family YMCA’s Annual Livestrong Spinathon held in March was a huge success!

Thank you to all those who participated in our Spinathon. Together the New Tampa Family YMCA raised over $7,000 to support our Annual Community Sup-port Campaign and Livestrong Cancer Survivor Program. With over 60 partici-pants ranging in age from 11 to 88 the Spinathon was truly fun for all ages. With their support and the support of several local businesses the YMCA’s livestrong Cancer Survivor Program will continue to flourish and grow.

Thanks to the Livestrong Yoga Group for cheering on the spinners as well as each other. Thanks to the instructors who inspired everyone to keep on pushing despite the increasing humidity and heat.

And a Huge thank you to our local com-munity partners and sponsors for all their support. That includes: Physiotherapy Associates, Temple Terrace Family Physi-cians, Dr. Davis, D.O., Cherry Berry Yo-gurt, Nutralite, Standard Pacific Homes, Subway (Wal-Mart location), Chuck the DJ and all our wonderful spinners.
