Staying Aloft with Teamwork:Gordon Bethune

Largely credited with returning Continental Airlinesto profitability in the 1990s, Gordon Bethune — thecompany’s CEO and chairman — in March addressedthe many challenges facing business leaders. During theStillman School of Business’ Integrity and ProfessionalColloquium, he focused on his unique customer andemployee-oriented management style. “Sharing withemployees means not only compensating those at the top ofthe organization, but making all employees feel they are apart of the Continental team,” Bethune said. He empha-sized the importance of integrity in achieving — and main-taining — success, both in and out of the business setting.

Nobel Laureate and Pulitzer Prize-winner Toni Morrisonoffered a rare glimpse into her life as a novelist, artist,professor and political figure while on campus in April.Her visit launched the Voices of Our Time Lecture Series,sponsored by the University Honors Program. The newseries features notable individuals whose scholarship, lead-ership and commitment to values-centered critical thinkinghave made their voices essential to appreciating the com-plexities of modern life. Morrison is widely recognizedfor her unique narrative technique and compelling novelsfocusing on the black female experience, includingThe Bluest Eye, Sula and Beloved.

This Side of Paris:George Plimpton

As part of the University’s Poetry-in-the-Round series, authorand actor George Plimpton came to Seton Hall in Februaryto perform his dramatic dialogue, Zelda, Scott and Ernest.The work is based upon the lives and literature of Jazz Agenovelist F. Scott Fitzgerald; his wife, Zelda; and the unknownwriter they befriended in Paris in the 1920s — ErnestHemingway. Plimpton, best known as the author of PaperLion and co-founder and editor of The Paris Review, has actedin some two dozen films, including Lawrence of Arabia andGood Will Hunting. Performing the role of his own literaryhero and inspiration — the author of The Great Gatsby andThis Side of Paradise — is one Plimpton especially relished.He was joined by Harper’s Magazine editor Lewis Laphamand actress Ann McDonough.

in preparing students for leader-ship roles in church and society.

“As a major Catholicuniversity, Seton Hall is well-prepared to accept both the giftand task presented to us byLilly Endowment,” saysReverend Paul A. Holmes ’77,S.T.D., vice president formission and ministry.

Seton Hall’s planningprocess, titled “Called to Serve,Called to Lead,” has beenexploring the many ways thatmembers of the Universitycommunity might view theircareer choices as a calling toserve others, and how under-graduate and graduate studentsmight consider whether theyare called to Church ministry,in both ordained and non-ordained vocations. “Themission of Seton Hall hasalways been focused oneducating competent servantleaders who are ready to makepositive contributions tosociety,” Father Holmes says.“Certainly, this grant will helpour University accomplish moreextensively and easily whatit has already accomplishedfor generations of young menand women.”

Father Holmes is co-chairing the planning processwith Monsignor Richard M.Liddy ’60, S.T.L., Ph.D., whoserves as project director.Monsignor Liddy is the directorof Seton Hall’s Center forCatholic Studies and UniversityProfessor of Catholic Thoughtand Culture. Deacon William J.Toth, Ph.D., is the project’sadministrative assistant. Toth isan assistant professor ofChristian ethics, director ofSeton Hall’s Institute on Workand director of lay leadership forthe Archdiocese of Newark.

Members of the Universitycommunity, including faculty,students, priests, administratorsand alumni, also are playing anintegral role in the planningprocess, helping to developa program with far-reachingbenefits. To assist the planningboard, the project hosted aseries of seminars focused onvocations; the seminars aretitled IMPACTS (Inspiring,Motivating, Promoting ACall To Servant-leadership).Featuring noted scholars,religious leaders and businessprofessionals, “these sessionshave helped us develop acommon-ground understandingof what vocation is, and whatit means in our personal andprofessional lives,” notesMonsignor Liddy. “In addition,we’ve gained greater insightinto ways we can heighten thissense of vocation throughoutthe University community.”

Participants involved inthe planning process serve onthree committees tasked withdeveloping initiatives in thefollowing areas:

� Called to Church Ministry —programs that foster a senseof vocation leading to ordainedministry and lay ecclesialministry, including offeringsthrough Seton Hall’s threeseminary communities (theCollege Seminary at SaintAndrew’s, ImmaculateConception Seminary andRedemptoris Mater MissionarySeminary in Kearny), as well asImmaculate ConceptionSeminary School of Theology;

� Called to Servant Leadership— initiatives that encourageemployees and students ofthe University to view theirchosen careers as vocations,including an examination of

the opportunities presentedthrough the University’s CoreCurriculum; and

� Called to CulturalTransformation — programsthat recognize that theUniversity itself is called byGod to address the needs ofthe surrounding communitiesin which it operates.

“All members of theUniversity community havebeen called to serve and calledto lead,” Toth affirms. “We arehopeful that the programsprepared under this grant willencourage the University’s bestand brightest to consider a lifecommitment to ordained ornon-ordained Church ministry.”

Much like Seton Hall’smission, “Called to Serve,Called to Lead” is a University-wide effort that requiresUniversity-wide knowledge andsupport to thrive. To help buildthat support and keep thecampus community informed,the Office of Mission andMinistry is developing a Website. Grant helps Seton Hall create a plan to nurture its mission

Seton Hall Universityhas been awarded a$50,000 planning grant

to develop initiatives toidentify and nurture a newgeneration of talented,religiously committed leaders.The grant was awardedby Lilly Endowment Inc.,an Indianapolis-basedfoundation that supports thecauses of religion, educationand community life.

More than 300 faith-basedorganizations applied for theplanning grants, which wereawarded to 50 colleges and uni-versities. Seton Hall is using itsgrant to create a detailed pro-posal to be submitted to LillyEndowment in September.

The proposal could resultin additional support of up to$2 million to implement newprograms and initiatives. Theimplementation grants willexpand opportunities forstudents to examine how faithrelates to vocational choicesand to consider the ministry asa vocation. The grants also willassist schools in maintaining aninstitutional environment thatsupports such exploration.Ultimately, Lilly Endowment’sinitiative aims to assist schools

Italian Renaissance scholar to conductresearch at Institute for Advanced Study

William J. Connell, Ph.D., associate professor of historyand the first holder of the Joseph M. and GeraldineC. La Motta Chair in Italian Studies at Seton Hall

University, was appointed a member of the prestigiousInstitute for Advanced Study (IAS) for the 2002-03academic year.

The IAS, located in Princeton, is an independent,private institution that provides scholars with the support andresources needed to carry out independent study and researchprojects across a wide range of academic fields. It has hostedsome of the 20th century’s most highly regarded thinkers,including Albert Einstein.

Connell, a scholar of the language, culture and historyof the Italian peninsula and its people, will devote his yearat IAS to studying relations between northern Italian andsouthern German cities during the Catholic and Protestantreform movements of the late 15th and early 16th centuries.His project, titled “A World of Cities, Italy and Germany inthe Age of Reform,” will examine the commercial, religious,educational and diplomatic connections between these urbanareas during an important period. Connell hopes to demon-strate the fundamental similarities between the Italian townsthat remained Catholic and the German towns that becameProtestant as a result of this movement.

Connell’s research will be incorporated into the Italianstudies courses at Seton Hall. His work also is expectedto further strengthen the University’s ties with Italiancommunities and organizations, both locally and nationally.The University is home to a number of unique resources,including the Joseph M. and Geraldine C. La Motta Chairin Italian Studies, established to encourage the study ofItalian culture; and a large collection of historical recordsfrom New Jersey’s Italian-American communities. Thesedetailed records are housed in the Monsignor William NoéField Archives and Special Collections Center.

Studying at Yale Universityand working for a summer onthe island of Elba, William J.Connell, Ph.D. developed anappreciation for Italian historyand culture. He holds theJoseph M. and Geraldine C.La Motta Chair in ItalianStudies at Seton Hall andwill be conducting researchat IAS in Princeton during thecoming academic year.

Asia Center celebrates golden anniversary

T he Most Reverend John J. Myers, J.C.D., D.D.,Archbishop of Newark (above left), was among thereligious, business and educational leaders who joined

together in April to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The AsiaCenter at Seton Hall University. Archbishop Myers, who was thecelebrant during a Mass of Thanksgiving, is joined in prayerby the Most Reverend Aloysius Jin Luxian, D.D., Bishop ofShanghai, China (center), and Reverend Laurence T. Murphy,M.R.E., Ph.D., president emeritus of Seton Hall and formerdirector of The Asia Center (1989-1998). Father Murphy, BishopJin and Monsignor Robert Sheeran ’67, University president,concelebrated the Mass.

As part of the two-day anniversary celebration, an honorarydegree was awarded to His Eminence Francis Xavier CardinalNguyen Van Thuan, president of the Pontifical Council for Justiceand Peace. Although Cardinal Nguyen could not attend theceremony because of surgery, his cousin, Andre Nguyen VanChau, Ph.D., accepted the degree on his behalf and deliveredthe Cardinal’s remarks.

The University also bestowed an honorary degree uponChong-Moon Lee, chairman and CEO of Ambex Venture Group.

The Life Achievement in East-West Education Award waspresented to John Tsu, Ph.D., chairman of President GeorgeW. Bush’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and PacificIslanders. A former chairman of Seton Hall’s Department of AsianStudies and director of the Institute of Far Eastern Studies (prede-cessor of The Asia Center), Tsu was cited for outstanding contribu-tions in promoting multicultural education.

During the weekend, a symposium co-sponsored by theG.K. Chesterton Institute explored the links between thespiritual traditions of East and West. (For more information onThe Asia Center’s history, see the Winter/Spring 2002 issue ofthe Seton Hall University Magazine.)

Monsignor Robert Sheeran ’67, S.T.D., Univer-sity president, adjusts Archbishop Barsamian’s academic hood.

Elected to his position in 1990, Archbishop Barsamian leadsmore than 1.2 million members of the Armenian Church of America.Ordained a celibate priest in 1971, he ranks among the most highlyeducated members of his Church’s clergy.

Something to Celebrate: Commencement 2002

Members of Seton Hall University’s largest graduatingclass celebrated their achievements duringthe 145th Commencement Exercises on May 13.

The 1,000 undergraduate and 1,004 graduate studentsin the Class of 2002 were joined by nearly 10,000 family,friends and members of the University community atContinental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford.

Commencement speakers reflected on the manychallenges posed to the graduating class and offeredhope-filled words for the future. Seton Hall honored itsown heroes for their unwavering commitment to servantleadership. Among those honored were the members ofthe Police Studies Graduate Program who perished in theterrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. And Seton Hallgave special recognition to Dana Christmas ’02, whosecourage continues to inspire the entire community.

Leona Kleinman, R.N., Ed.D., associate professorof nursing, leads the Processional as Grand Marshalof Seton Hall University’s 145th CommencementExercises. A faculty member for more than 25 years,Kleinman was selected for this honor in recognition ofher strong commitment to students, her professionand the University.

Known as the “Angel of Boland Hall”for her heroic efforts during theJanuary 2000 fire at Seton Hall, grad-uating senior Dana Christmas ’02received a special award forher courage and perseverance.Christmas, who graduated with aBachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice,was moved to tears when the audi-ence honored her with a standingovation. She thanked the Seton Hallcommunity for its role in her recov-ery and achievement. “With the timethat has been given to me, I can onlygo forward,” Christmas said. “Yousay I’m the inspiration. But you guysare the inspiration to me. You guyshave encouraged me. You guys havestrengthened me.”

Noting that 2001 was “a yearmarked by distinctive tragedyand challenge,” Commencementspeaker General Wesley K. Clark,U.S. Army (Ret.), said he foundit impossible to speak withoutacknowledging the tragediesexperienced by the Universityand its students in the wake ofSeptember 11. “You have notcommenced your journey at an easytime. … You will have to bear theserious burdens of decisions …and you’ll have to work to find newanswers, grounded in faith,” hesaid. “These are your burdens —but these are also your blessings.”

General Clark, to whom SetonHall awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters, has a longand decorated military career. A 1966 graduate of the United States Mil-itary Academy, he was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heartfor his service in Vietnam. He was later appointed Supreme AlliedCommander Europe and commander in chief of the U.S. EuropeanCommand. He retired from military service in 2000 after 34 years andcontinues to put his expertise to use as a military analyst for CNN.

Among this year’s special guestswas Chief Thomas Farrell, repre-senting the Port Authority ofNew York and New Jersey. Farrellaccepted a memorial plaque inhonor of the five members of theSeton Hall community and PortAuthority who lost their lives inthe line of duty on September 11,2001: Anthony Infante Jr., M.A.E.’98, adjunct professor; Fred V.Morrone, adjunct professor;James Nelson, graduate student;Alfonse Joseph Niedermeyer III,M.A.E.’00; and James Romito,M.A.E. ’98, adjunct professor (seethe Winter/Spring 2002 issue ofthe Seton Hall University Maga-zine). All five were law enforce-ment officers. The plaque wasinscribed: “For their selfless dedi-cation in saving lives and servinga grateful nation, these membersof the Seton HallUniversity Police Studies GraduateProgram are remembered astrue heroes.”

Seton Hall’s Educational Partners in Catholic Schools (EPICS) program graduated its first10 Master of Arts students. Based on the University of Notre Dame’s ACE (Alliance forCatholic Education) program, EPICS is designed to recruit recent college graduates toteach for two years in urban Catholic schools while earning their master’s degrees.

“EPICS trains graduates who desire to teach not just as a career but as a vocation,”notes Reverend Kevin M. Hanbury ’68, M.Div. ’75/Ed.S. ’79/Ed.D. ’85 (left). Father Hanburyserves as the program founder and director; associate dean for graduate administrativeservices at the College of Education and Human Services; and alumni chaplain. FatherHanbury observed, “These students represent a diverse set of backgrounds and receivedan intensive two-year service experience encompassing professional development,community life and spiritual growth to meet the needs of our country’s most underservedelementary and secondary schools.”

Committed to helping homelesschildren worldwide, Sister MaryRose McGeady, D.C., chief executiveofficer of Covenant House,was awarded an honorary Doctorof Humane Letters.

“From her first years inreligious life, Sister Mary Rosehas devoted herself to the care ofhomeless and disturbed childrenand their families, very much inthe spirit of our Lord Jesus whosaid, ‘Let the little children come tome,’” noted Mary Ruzicka, Ph.D.,professor of psychology, in readingthe degree citation.

Since 1990, Sister Mary Rose has guided the largest privatelyfunded childcare agency in the United States that provides shelter andservices to homeless and runaway youth. She previously served atseveral agencies and treatment facilities for abused and disturbedchildren. As Provincial of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent dePaul, she directed the work of her order in schools, hospitals andchildcare agencies in 11 states.

In December 2001,Augustine’s vision took anothermajor step toward realizationwhen the center partnered withJohnson Matthey, a worldwidecatalyst manufacturer,to manufacture and commer-cialize these compounds. Lastyear, an Australian patent wasissued to the University, mark-ing the 11th patent for materials

A catalyst for change in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries

The center conducts useful research for industrial clients. Among itsinstruments are these computer-controlled low-pressure reactor systems.

Virtually every syntheticfabric and plastic on themarket today is manufac-

tured through the action ofcatalysts. Widely used in thepetroleum and petrochemicalindustries, as well as in foodprocessing and pharmaceuti-cals, catalysts speed the rateat which chemical reactionsoccur. They even boost theperformance of laundrydetergents and other house-hold products.

To most consumers,catalysis may be a mystery.But to the scientists at theCenter for Applied Catalysisat Seton Hall, researchingcatalysis enables them todesign and develop catalystsand catalytic processes forindustrial use. Using an inter-disciplinary approach thatcombines chemistry, chemicalengineering and materialstechnology, the center’sscientists assist industrialclients in optimizing catalyticprocesses for the productionof fine chemicals and pharma-ceuticals. Fine chemicalsare synthesized productsused in the manufactureof pharmaceuticals, flavors,agro-chemicals, etc.

“Catalytic processes notonly are more economical thannormal chemical reactions;they also are more ecologicallyfriendly since they generallyproduce fewer side products,”explains Robert Augustine,Ph.D., professor emeritusof chemistry and director ofthe center.

Since its establishment in1997, the Center for AppliedCatalysis has conducted collab-orative research with corporateclients such as the DowChemical Co., W.R. Grace &Co., and Schering Plough.

Currently, the center is workingwith NutraSweet Corporationto develop an economicalprocess to produce a newsweetener, Neotame, which isabout 200 times sweeter thanEqual (the company’s currentaspartame sweetener).

Located in McNulty Hall,the center makes use of itsfully computerized equipmentto create and enhance newcatalysts, catalytic processesand applications of catalyststo the synthesis of organicchemicals. Most of the workis performed by postdoctoralresearch associates workingunder the supervision ofAugustine and Setrak K.Tanielyan, Ph.D., technicaldirector.

Historically, catalystshave been classified in oneof two ways, depending onwhether they dissolve in areaction mixture. A homoge-neous catalyst dissolves, whilea heterogeneous catalyst tendsto be solid, which makes iteasier to remove after theprocess is completed.

In 1999, Seton Hallreceived a U.S. patent forthe special class of catalystsdeveloped at the center.The patented process success-fully combines the selectivityfeatures of homogeneouscatalysts with the ease ofseparation and re-useassociated with heterogeneous(solid) catalysts. This newclass of catalysts is particularlyattractive to the pharmaceuticalindustry.

“Only a few researchcenters nationwide focuson the practical industrialapplication of catalysis forthe synthesis of fine chemicalsand pharmaceuticals andthe development of supported

During his high schooldays, Richard Wendelloften volunteered for

food and clothing drives. Butit was at Seton Hall Universitythat he learned the true valueof helping others when heembarked on a service projectto benefit autistic childrenand adults. For the seniorfinance major, volunteerismis now as much a part of hiscollege experience as hisacademic pursuits.

By putting his computerskills to work, Wendellcreated a multimedia presen-tation that highlighted thevalue of services for autisticindividuals. Aptly named“Special Quest,” the presen-tation was set to music andfeatured striking photos ofchildren and young adultsengaged in recreational out-door activities, such as rockclimbing and sports. “Theseare typical activities for mostchildren, but autistic childrendo not always have the sameopportunities,” he reflects.

Wendell began this proj-ect as a required assignmentfor the Leadership StudiesProgram in Seton Hall’sStillman School of Business,but it quickly became veryimportant to him personally.“I recognized that a veryreal opportunity existed toimprove the quality of life forothers,” he says. Launchedin 1994, the LeadershipStudies Program providesvolunteer opportunitiesgeared toward helpingstudents become effectiveorganizational leaders.

The business student’sproject was presented at anOctober 2000 fund-raisingevent hosted by the QuestAutism Foundation (QAF) andthe Arc of Bergen and Passaic

Counties. The two nonprofitorganizations provide autisticchildren and adults with vitalopportunities, includingrecreational, occupational andresidential. “It’s about muchmore than meeting basicneeds. It’s about improvingthe quality of life,” Wendellsays. With only limited publicfunds for these services, “QAFand the Arc fill this gap bysupporting projects that pro-mote the independence ofpeople with autism and theirinclusion in the community,”he points out.

Although Wendell hadworked on service projectsbefore, this one was particu-larly challenging. “Initially,I did not know a lot aboutautism,” he says. For guidance,he turned to his mentor atSeton Hall, Lisa McCauleyParles, J.D., an instructor oflegal studies in the StillmanSchool. She and her husband,Craig, have an autistic son,Andrew, and helped foundQAF. Parles works hard toeducate the public aboutautism. In March, Andrew wasfeatured on Nightline in a showthat examined approachesto helping autistic children.“Professor Parles helpedme understand what theneeds of these people are,”Wendell says.

Wendell’s presentation —and the fund-raiser — werehits. Parles, who was amongthe 500 people who turned outfor the event, says, “Richardput everything into this proj-ect, and when he was finished,there was not a dry eye left inthe place. It was so movingand beautifully done,” sherecalls. “Recreational programsenrich the lives of thesechildren in so many ways.As a parent of an autistic child,

and as Richard’s teacher, I wasespecially touched. It is such apleasure working withstudents like Richard who areso dedicated and driven,”Parles adds. More than$100,000 was raised for theorganizations.

Wendell notes that hisparticipation “reaffirmed mybelief that it is important tocontribute to the community.These children need a lot ofhelp, and the organizationsthat advocate on their behalfare starved for funds andresources. Not many peoplerealize just how important itis to contribute — not justmoney, but time as well,”he says.

The same opportunity tomake a difference motivatedWendell to look into SetonHall during his senior year inhigh school. “I felt that thebusiness curriculum wasfocused more on service andless on the acquisition or accu-mulation of wealth, and thatthere were strong networkingpossibilities,” he says. He wasawarded several scholarships,including the competitiveProvost’s Scholarship and theGerald Buccino EndowedScholarship.

Wendell’s heartfelt desireto work for causes in whichhe believes also inspired himto become involved in theelection campaign of FrankCaputo Jr., a councilman inhis hometown, the Boroughof North Arlington. “Thisexperience gave me a betterunderstanding of how busi-ness and politics are inexplica-bly linked, and how difficult itcan be for politicians to makemutually beneficial decisions,”Wendell says. Caputo’s reelec-tion in November 2001 wasrewarding for Wendell.

“I was able to connect withpeople in the communityand discuss issues that mat-ter, such as local education,”he says.

Keenly interested in thepeople management aspect ofbusiness, Wendell spends hisfree time researching smallbusiness and entrepreneurialopportunities. Eventually,he hopes to open restaurantsthroughout New Jersey. In themeantime, he gains practicalexperience through part-timerestaurant jobs, including hiscurrent position at the UpperMontclair Country Club inClifton. “I don’t want to sitbehind a desk somewhere,cold and disconnected fromwhat is really important,” hesays. “I am fortunate to bereceiving a Seton Hall educa-tion, which teaches respectfor others and the importanceof making a difference inthe world. In the grandscheme of things, that iswhat really counts.”

A Winding Career Path Leads Priest into the Classroom

As a child in England,he imagined himself afuture teacher, often

setting up a blackboard andplaying school with friends.But before becoming a priestand teacher, ReverendAnthony Figueiredo, M.Div.’94, S.T.L., S.T.D., assistantprofessor of systematic theol-ogy at Immaculate ConceptionSeminary School of Theology,took a very different careerpath: international banking.

After earning a first-class(summa cum laude) bachelor’sdegree in French, Germanand economics in 1986 fromLoughborough University inthe East Midlands, he securedone of only 40 positions as abanker for the prestigiousNational Westminster Bank inLondon (the largest bank inthe United Kingdom at thetime). Although he did notpursue teaching at that point,he continued to frequent theclassroom as a student, earninga master’s degree in interna-tional banking.

In the midst of his bank-ing career, he becameincreasingly involved withthe Neocatechumenal Way,a missionary communitywithin the Catholic Church.He offered to serve onmissions throughout theworld to spread the Word ofGod. While on an Ethiopianmission in 1988, his lifechanged dramatically. Forthe first time, he felt a strongcalling to the priesthood. “Isaw thousands of people liter-ally dying of hunger in front ofme, yet, I knew that God waswith me and God was withthem too, in this dark hour,”Father Figueiredo recalls.

Seeing an emaciated youngwoman cradling her infant in a

refugee camp, he sensed anincredible desire to givesomething to this woman insuffering. “It was pointlessto offer her something transi-tory like money,” he says.“More lasting would be aword that God was with herin her suffering. At that verymoment, I realized that themost important thingI could give was the GoodNews that Jesus Crucified isrisen and alive. Then andthere, I was certain I had todevote my life to God as apriest, announcing andteaching this Good News.”

He resigned from the bank,and in September 1990 cameto the United States, arrivingat the Redemptoris MaterMissionary Seminary of theArchdiocese of Newark inKearny. He also enrolled inImmaculate ConceptionSeminary School of Theology.In May 1994, Seton Hall

University granted him aMaster of Divinity in PastoralMinistry and he earned thePope John Paul II Medal ofHonor for achieving the high-est GPA in his program at theSeminary. Later that month,on May 28, he was ordainedto the priesthood by theMost Reverend Theodore E.McCarrick, Ph.D., D.D., Arch-bishop of Newark (now HisEminence Theodore CardinalMcCarrick, Archbishop ofWashington).

On the day of FatherFigueiredo’s ordination, hisparents, Constancio and Sarah,shared with him a story of self-less love that would inspirehim every day of his new life.“While my mother waspregnant with me, her doctorprescribed thalidomide [com-mon practice in the 1960s forexpectant women having diffi-culty sleeping]. Thalidomide,though, became known forcausing serious and life-lasting

birth defects in the children ofthe mothers to whom it wasprescribed,” FatherFigueiredo shares. “Theirdoctor asked them to abortme, telling them they wouldhave a handicapped child. Myparents refused. Relying onGod’s will, they told thedoctors, ‘If God allowed usto conceive this child, Godhas a plan.’” On June 5,1964, Sarah gave birth to thecouple’s fourth child. Bornwith a shortened left hand,their child indeed had adisability, but one that wouldprove to strengthen him.“My parents demonstratedto me, through their verywords and actions, that I mustalways love as they loved me— with selfless, unconditionallove,” he says.

After his ordination,Father Figueiredo wasassigned to help establishthe first of several foreignmissions of the Archdiocese

of Newark. “It was a challenge,but I felt such happiness. I hadthe opportunity to literallyrebuild the Church inEstonia, a former communistcountry in Western Europe,where the Catholic churcheswere destroyed,” he remem-bers. He and a seminarianlaid the groundwork for whatare now three churches andschools run by Newark priestsin Estonian cities.

Upon his return to theUnited States in September1994, Father Figueiredo wasappointed secretary to theArchbishop of Newark, servingSaint Agnes Parish in Clarkas parochial vicar. In February1996, he was sent to Rome,where he completed threemore advanced degrees — allwith highest honors.

While in Rome, FatherFigueiredo served Pope JohnPaul II as special assistantto four Synods of Bishops.“Effectively, I worked withthe Pope as his temporarysecretary,” explains FatherFigueiredo, who served as aliaison at the synods, at whichthe Pope and more than 150bishops and cardinals fromaround the world gathered.“As a young priest, this expe-rience inspired me,” herecalls. “I witnessed, first-hand, that the love in hisheart is the same for every-one. He loves a bishop thesame way he loves a parishpriest. He loves a cardinal thesame way he loves a peasant.”

Father Figueiredo’s pathtook another turn in June2000, when ArchbishopMcCarrick appointed himas a faculty member at theSeminary. “I vividly remembermy enthusiasm as I beganthis next stage in my priest-hood, becoming the teacher

I dreamed in my youth I wouldbe,” Father Figueiredo says.

His enthusiasm for teach-ing continues to grow. “As aprofessor and priest, I see anenormous challenge living inan overwhelmingly secularworld. But God has given me abeautiful window of opportu-nity,” he notes. According toFather Figueiredo, the Poperecently told a bishop thatthe Seminary is the apple ofhis eye, representing whatthe Church will eventuallybecome. “The seminarian oftoday is the priest of tomorrow.I must teach them well andprepare them to be priests afterthe heart of Jesus,” he says.

Father Figueiredo incorpo-rates lessons of selfless lovelearned both from his parentsand from the Pope, whom heserved again on two occasionsin 2001, including anotherSynod and an ExtraordinaryConsistory of Cardinals. “I seethe Pope as giving his life com-pletely for others, loving andliving in the dimension of JesusCrucified and risen. Despitehis age and frailty, he is drivenby the divine life within him,”the priest says. “I share thiswith our seminarians.”

In his classroom, FatherFigueiredo uses innovativemethods to teach the theologi-cal dimensions of scientificand other contemporary issues.“Some teachings, for instancethose regarding cloning,divorce, artificial contraceptionand euthanasia, althoughchallenging, become possiblein the light of the Gospel,” hesays. He explains that while

these teachings, “may seem atfirst impossible for humans tofollow,” they become possible“through the Gospel, that is,with God’s life within you. Thesame Holy Spirit who raisedChrist from the dead — animpossibility in human terms— is offered to us freelythrough the Church to help uslive these teachings,” he says.

“I do not water downthe Church’s teachings,”Father Figueiredo emphasizes.“Instead, I challenge theseminarians and lay studentsto embrace the teachings intheir fullness. I present themin all of their glory so that thestudents may, in turn, proclaimthem to others.”

The invitation to shareChrist’s mission gives FatherFigueiredo hope for theChurch’s future. “Thestudents grow to welcome thechallenges that this missionpresents. The key is teachingwith love. It is because I haveseen God’s hand in my lifethat I challenge the students,”he says. “When they see theneed for God’s life, giventhrough the Church, theybecome signs of hope to awaiting world. God hasopened a way through thecross in the resurrection ofJesus, His Son. This way isoffered to us, too, through HisHoly Spirit.” He recalls whatMother Teresa of Calcuttaonce told him: “Only onething is needed: If you havethe desire to be holy, Godwill do the rest.”

When Erin Sharp ’02 waslooking at colleges,Seton Hall Universitystood out from the rest,

she says, because of its strongacademic tradition and the beauty ofthe campus. Like many highschool students, though, shewas looking for somethingmore — financial assistance tohelp pay for her education.

For Sharp, an aspiringchemist, the Universityoffered the possibility of thatsomething: a four-year tuitionscholarship through the ClareBoothe Luce Program. SetonHall is one of 14 designatededucational institutions offer-ing these prestigious, merit-based scholarships for womenstudying science, mathematicsor engineering. When Sharpapplied for admission to SetonHall, she applied for the schol-arship as well, which coverstuition, fees, and room andboard, plus a stipend for books. Theresult was exactly what the Fort Laud-erdale, Florida, student had hoped itwould be.

“Receiving the Clare Boothe Lucescholarship provided a very excitingstart to my college education,” saysSharp, who majored in chemistry,earned a Bachelor of Science degreein May and is now pursuing a Ph.D.in organic chemistry at Ohio StateUniversity. “Not only did it providefinancial help, but it gave me theconfidence that comes with winninga scholarship.”

How the Financial AssistancePie Is Sliced

College is an integral part of the Amer-ican dream, but paying for higher edu-cation is enough to disturb the sleep of

even the most careful financial plan-ner. According to the College Board,tuition and fees at four-year, privateinstitutions during the 2001-02academic year were an average of 5.5percent higher than the previous year.

Students at public collegesand universities had to shoul-der an even higher hike, aver-aging 7.7 percent. A recordamount of financial aid —$74 billion — was availableduring this period, with mostof that in the form of loans.Scholarships account for asmaller, yet highly desirable,slice of the financial assis-tance pie because unlikeloans, they don’t have to bepaid back. Scholarships aretangible recognition of a stu-dent’s accomplishments.

Much like a box ofcrayons, scholarships come ina variety of hues: need-basedor merit-based; endowed orannual; full or partial; institu-

tionally funded or supported by a cor-poration or organization.

While many scholarships areawarded as a student begins collegeand renewed based on academic sta-tus, others reward current students fortheir accomplishments. “These schol-arships are often given by universitydepartments to acknowledge achieve-ment, but they also help students stayin school,” says Thomas Green, M.M.,associate vice president for Enroll-ment Services at Seton Hall. “Theyprovide opportunities for students

who blossom and prove themselvesonce they’re in college.”

About 90 percent of the scholar-ships Seton Hall awards to incomingstudents are merit-based; the remain-ing 10 percent are need-based awardsgiven to students after factoring in theamount of financial aid they willreceive. For the very top echelon ofSeton Hall’s incoming freshmen, thereare about 40 full scholarships available.“We also award many partial scholar-ships to students who are academicallysolid and have strong test scores,”Green points out. “About two-thirdsof the entering freshman class willreceive some type of institutionalfunding, whether merit- or need-based. Even if a family can afford tosend a son or daughter to college,scholarships have psychological value.They send the message to the student— this school really wants me toattend — and are a source of pridefor the entire family.”

While there are no definitive statis-tics on the number and dollar amountof scholarships available nationally, a2001 survey by the National Scholar-ship Providers Association, an organi-zation dedicated to supporting theneeds of professionals in this area,found its member institutions hadgiven out $400 million.

High school students may haveheard tales of “millions in unclaimedscholarship dollars,” however thatclaim hardly tells the whole story,according to Glenda Rose of theCollege Assistance Program at NorthMiami Senior High School. “Theselarge figures usually represent anestimated national total of employeeor union member benefits,” sheexplains. “So, if a parent works for acompany and there are either no stu-dents who qualify or no one going tocollege that year, that figure is used as‘unclaimed’ — but no one else couldhave used the money other than theemployee’s child.”

How to Find the FundsThere is an ocean of scholarship money avail-able — both at Seton Hall University and fromoutside sources — but navigating through thewaters takes some time and willingness tofish. Here are a few tips for staying on course.

� Steer clear of scholarship frauds. Stu-dents and their parents can be fooled inseveral ways, including falling for so-called“guaranteed” scholarships, paying “taxes”up front to receive scholarships and payingapplication fees — however small. Anothercommon fraud: “For a fairly hefty fee,scam artists promise massive lists ofscholarships allegedly (but only rarely)appropriate for those paying this fee,” saysSue Bigg, a certified educational plannerand member of the National Associationfor College Admission Counseling. Thebottom line: If the search or scholarshiprequires more than the cost of postage,it is probably a scam.

� Surf for support. Applying for scholarshipscan be a click of the mouse away. TheInternet’s popularity with teens, coupledwith their need to find ways to pay forhigher education, has produced severalWeb sites geared to the college bound.Two highly regarded sites that offerno-cost scholarship searches arewww.wiredscholar.com (sponsored bySallie Mae, Inc., a provider of studentloans) and www.fastweb.com

� Backyard bonanza. Students often applyfor big name national scholarships, butthere’s money to be found close to home.Many community-based organizations andcivic groups offer opportunities.

� Use the experts’ knowledge. Universityfinancial aid officers and college admis-sions counselors can provide informationabout where to find scholarships, as wellas tips to make an application stand out(at Seton Hall, contact Enrollment Serv-ices at 1-800-THE-HALL). Referencelibrarians also can point students in thedirection of helpful books, such as Ben-jamin R. Kaplan’s How to Go to CollegeAlmost for Free.

William C. Nelsen, M.A., Ph.D.,president of the Citizens’ ScholarshipFoundation of America, a nationalmanager of scholarship programs, hasseen a doubling in the amount hisorganization has awarded over the pastfive years, to $114 million. During the2001-02 academic year, 26 Seton Hallstudents received scholarships totalingmore than $50,000 from his group’sprograms.

“Corporations and local communi-ties are recognizing the significantfinancial needs that college-boundstudents have and, increasingly, areaware that federal, state and institu-tional sources are not able to meet allthose needs,” Nelsen says. “They alsorealize that providing scholarships is intheir best interest if there is going tobe an educated citizenry and an edu-cated workforce.”

During the past three years, JohnMcLoughlin, CFRE, director of corpo-ration and foundation relations atSeton Hall, says he has seen a dramaticincrease in the number of corporationsand foundations expressing interestin establishing scholarships at theUniversity. He attributes this to threemain factors:

� Seton Hall’s growing reputationas a regional resource about tobecome a national treasure;

� its continued stewardship ofexisting scholarship funds; and

� the creation of a number ofnew schools and programs atthe University during the lastseveral years.

More than 130 scholarships aretracked through the University’sdevelopment office, although that

figure does not represent all of thescholarships given out by Seton Hall,notes Mary Vining, M.A. ’01, formerdirector of donor relations. Manyfunds are established as a tribute to amajor figure in the donor’s life or inmemory of a loved one, such as theSeton Hall College Day Scholarship,given in memory of John F. Hagerty,M.D. And many scholarships notonly honor an individual but are estab-lished with the thought of highlight-ing a special interest of that person.For example, the Joseph P. Connor[’19] Scholarship, in memory of thepriest and alumnus known forcomposing film scores, songsand church music, is presentedto a music major by the Song-writers Guild Foundation.

Making a Difference forDonors as WellAs rewarding as scholarshipsare to receive, from a donor’svantage point, they are just asrewarding to give. “Many peo-ple are generous by nature, andscholarships are appealing giftsbecause they are an investmentin someone’s education,” saysPaula Stein, J.D., director ofprincipal gifts at Seton Hall.“A scholarship can be given byindividuals or groups as a wayto honor a favorite professor orfield of study. Some alumniwho benefit from these scholar-ships later return the favorwhen they become financially able.There are many different motivationsfor giving, and there’s always a need.”(See related article on page 14.)

For Joseph A. Unanue Sr., presidentand chief executive officer of GoyaFoods, Inc., starting a scholarship atSeton Hall more than a decade agowas a perfect fit. “My wife and Iwanted to see more Hispanic studentsgo to college. Seton Hall is locatednear a large Hispanic population, and

we knew the University was providingquality education,” says Unanue, aformer University trustee. The result-ing Hispanic Student Scholarship,founded in 1991, supports needyHispanic students in any field of study.

The Gerald Buccino EndowedScholarship is presented annually to astudent entering the LeadershipStudies Program in the StillmanSchool of Business. It was establishedby Gerald Buccino ’63, C.P.A., M.B.A.,Ph.D., a member of the Seton HallBoard of Regents and founder ofBuccino & Associates, one of the first

“turnaround and work out” consultingfirms that assists financially troubledcompanies. The scholarship is hisway of thanking the University. “I’vebeen very fortunate professionally,and it’s to the University that I owemy success,” he maintains. “I’m inthe business of building leaders, so itfollows that the purpose of this schol-arship is to assist some of SetonHall’s future leaders.”

Michael Eilert ’02, a recipientof the Buccino Scholarship, knowsthat the donor’s assistance goesfar beyond dollars. “Dr. Buccino

takes a personal interest in thestudents who are awarded thescholarship,” Eilert says. “He’sintroduced me to his businesscolleagues, invited my familyto dinner and given me soundadvice about graduate school. Wespeak at least once a month.”

Eilert is now earning a master’sdegree in economics at DukeUniversity, and both he andBuccino expect their productiverelationship to continue. “Myexperiences with Dr. Buccino havebeen invaluable and unlike anyI’ve had with others who havegiven me a scholarship. I hold himin the highest esteem,” Eilert says.“I’ve bounced ideas off him andasked him questions for fouryears, and with the convenienceof e-mail and a cell phone, notmuch will change.”

In fact, Eilert believes his schol-arship experience has been so positivethat he hopes to follow in the footstepsof his role model. He states: “It wouldbe an honor and a privilege to helpothers in the same way thatthis scholarship — and my relationshipwith Dr. Buccino — has helped me.”

In the 1960s — a time when other businesseswere abandoning Jersey City in droves —Thomas J. Stanton Jr. helped to revitalize a

downtrodden area of his hometown. That river-front area became known as the “Gold Coast.”For many years the influential civic leader alsoplayed a critical role at Seton Hall University,guiding the work of the Center for Public Serv-ice. Now, his commitment to serving others,both at Seton Hall and within the community,lives on through a scholarship fund establishedin his memory.

Dedicated to enriching New Jersey culture,Stanton understood the state’s need for strongleadership. Believing with conviction that charitybegins at home, “he stood firm, taking up thecause,” recalls his wife, Jane Maloney Stanton.

Thomas Stanton’s business and careerflourished over the years. In 1954, he joinedFirst National Bank of Jersey City (it laterbecame First Jersey National Bank) as a busi-ness loan officer, and was named president andchief executive officer in 1967. That year,Stanton was instrumental in the constructionof the corporate offices of First Jersey NationalBank, a company he would lead for more than20 years. The site he chose sharply contrastedwith the Manhattan skyline it faced. Yet hisdecision to build there, considered risky at thetime, helped spur commercial and residentialconstruction along the Hudson River, fromHoboken to West New York. Commercial prop-erty auctioned off by the federal government foras little as $7,500 per acre in 1977 sold adecade later for more than $300,000 per acre.

“Tom had a great deal of talent andcharisma,” Mrs. Stanton notes. Under hisauthority, the bank grew from its main officeand 10 branches into a statewide operationwith close to $5 billion in assets and more than4,000 employees.

Throughout his life, Thomas Stanton madephilanthropic endeavors a priority. He retired in1990 (two years after First Jersey was acquiredby National Westminster Bank; it is now part ofFleet New Jersey). But he remained active inurban renewal projects, pledging dollars andtime as chairperson of the first board of LibertyScience Center, which has become one of theGold Coast’s major attractions. He also servednumerous corporations, nonprofit organizationsand educational institutions. Taking a specialinterest in the education of young people,he was a regent at Saint Peter’s College andvice chairman of the board of the WashingtonCenter, a nonprofit organization in the nation’scapital that provides internships and academicopportunities to college students.

In 1989, in keeping with Stanton’s commit-ment to civic responsibility, he was appointedthe first chair of Seton Hall’s Center for PublicService Advisory Council, a post he held untilhis death in January 1998.

“I called him Mr. New Jersey because hewas truly devoted to the people here,” saysNaomi Wish, Ph.D., director of the center andchair of the Graduate Department of Public andHealthcare Administration. “He was a gift to theCenter for Public Service, and his leadershipleft an impression that serves as a model forfuture generations.”

Mrs. Stanton, knowing her husband’s vivac-ity for affecting change and his love for theCenter for Public Service, approached Wishwith the idea of establishing the Thomas J.Stanton Jr. Endowed Scholarship Fund. “Themission of the center is so closely related to theissues that he cared about, the cornerstones ofhis philosophy of life — helping community-based organizations function more effectivelyand promoting public service, volunteerism andphilanthropy. It is a perfect fit,” Mrs. Stantonaffirms. “Awarding this scholarship to studentswho see the big picture like Tom, special people

who share Tom’s ability to create change, is aliving legacy,” she continues.

The Stantons had eight children. Their sonThomas J. Stanton III shares that same philos-ophy. He observes, “The scholarship has thepotential to have a direct impact on New Jerseystudents, improving individuals and the com-munity for years to come.”

Mrs. Stanton, noting that “Tom would havebeen proud of me,” recently pledged $100,000to the scholarship at Seton Hall. The goal isto raise $500,000 by next June to be used toaward annual scholarships to students enrolledin the Master of Public AdministrationProgram. In addition to financial need and aca-demic achievement, recipients must demon-strate commitment to leadership andcommunity service, much like the civic leaderfor whom the scholarship is named.

The Merits ofMentoringFor many alumni, the words of their Seton Hallmentors still ring true. Our readers write to tell usof some of the professors who went the extra milefor their students.

The origin of the word“mentor” explainsmuch about itsmodern-day meaning.In Greek mythology,

Mentor was the wise counselor andtutor to whom Odysseus entrustedhis royal household when he wentoff to the Trojan War. Today, theword is used to describe a variety ofnurturing relationships between theold and the young, the experiencedand the inexperienced.

In recent years, mentoring pro-grams have cropped up in business,education and local communities.At Seton Hall, formal studentmentoring programs are flourishing,but mentoring has always been afocus on the South Orange campus.

On the following pages, alumnidetail the ways their professorshelped them establish sound educa-tional paths, fulfill ambitious careergoals and meet life’s challenges.

When Paul Jordan entered a class-room on the first day of a semes-

ter, his students understood that thiswell-prepared professor woulddemand — and receive — their besteffort. In my second semester as anundergraduate, I encountered him inan over-subscribed Advanced Compo-sition class. Paper after paper wasreturned promptly, with carefullycrafted, valued comments.

As the semester wore on, Isummoned sufficient resolve to informhim of my interest in writing, asking ifhe would review some of my materialnot germane to the assignments athand. Without hesitation, hecheerfully agreed. My writing wasreturned with his suggestions and afinal note: “Keep at it.”

I enrolled in several more ofProfessor Jordan’s literature courses,which came alive with his relatedanecdotes, penetrating analyses andprobing questions. At some point,learning that this widely read man,this imposing figure, was also a prod-uct of Seton Hall, provided me withan additional source of pride in theinstitution. He stood tall, in my eyes,as an example of Seton Hall’s imprinton the man, on the educator.

Everyone, I suspect, who writes forpublication endures some editorialrejection. Even though 54 years havepassed, Jordan’s three-word note,“Keep at it,” continues to carry mebeyond the barrier of rejection to thenext project.

Later on, as a Seton Hall facultymember myself (1965 to 1982), I putforward that extra effort each time Istepped into the classroom, recallinghow I viewed Professor Jordan andexperiencing the challenge of standingbefore students as a product of theUniversity.

and which instilled in me a lifelonglove of learning) he also was a conduitto connecting me with my ethnic andcultural heritage.

When I was growing up in the ’30sand ’40s as a first-generation Italian-American, my parents (like otherItalian parents of that time) were inter-ested in Americanizing their childrenso that they could thrive in the societyin which they lived. Little effort wasplaced on educating us about ourbackground. We were the future; wewere American; and that was the worldwe were encouraged to understand.

During a class field trip to England,France and Italy to celebrate the 1950Jubilee of the Roman CatholicChurch, Father Field came to impactprofoundly my ability to explore andunderstand my roots and heritage. Heawakened in me a genuine desire tolearn of my past, through which Ideveloped a respect and appetite notonly for knowledge of my own culturalheritage, but also that of others.

This desire to explore and knowother cultures has led me to a life ofwork and travel, living in many coun-tries of the world. It is an endeavorthat I have pursued all of my life, andone that has enriched me beyond mywildest dreams.

Accounting I in myfirst semester. WhenI told Professor JohnDeehan about myfailure and my inten-tion to changemajors, he said thatI was giving up tooeasily. He encour-aged me to com-plete the SpringSemester beforemaking a decision.

With his helpand encourage-ment, all of mygrades improvedand I eventuallyearned a B.S. inAccounting. I wenton to enjoy a successful academiccareer, earning an M.B.A. and C.P.A.accreditation. I later started anaccounting practice and, in 1974,joined with a colleague to buildan accounting practice that is stillthriving today.

I have enjoyed my work, somethingthat would not have been possiblewithout John Deehan. I am very grate-ful both to him and Seton Hall. I havemade it a point to stay in contact withhim over the years — and I know he isan inspiration to many other students.

The Seton Hall mission to “enrichthe mind, the heart and the

spirit” is not only my alma mater’smantra. It also is a fitting motto formany of its professors, and is one thatI personally associate with the lateStanley Kosakowksi, a professor whomade a difference in the lives of hisstudents for more than 30 years.

As a part-time student, an account-ing major, between 1977 and 1985,I had heard many stories about Profes-sor Kosakowski. He was my adviser,

but our interactions werelimited (althoughI occasionally wor-shipped with himon campus at the5 p.m. Mass).I was eager to takehis Friday nightBusiness Policyclass, and enrolledin the fall of 1984.At the time, I hadno idea how thisexperience wouldimpact my life.

A demandingteacher, ProfessorKosakowksi assignedhours of challengingwork revolving around

running a simulated com-pany. Some students, overwhelmed bythis approach, dropped his class imme-diately. But the knowledgeable profes-sor made a tempting promise to thosewho stayed: “What you will learn inthis course will help you, not onlywhile at Seton Hall, but throughoutyour life.”

He also was a bridge to the realworld. The highlight of the class was amock stockholders meeting, with for-mer students serving as shareholders.His assignments pushed me to workharder and smarter than I had everworked before, teaching me muchabout my own personal drive. Heinstilled in me a desire to learn,

helping me realize that nothing isimpossible with God. I was thrilledwhen he asked me to return eachsemester to participate in his mockstockholders meetings.

We remained in touch after heretired, and he continued to guide mein ways that are difficult to put intowords. I was profoundly saddened byhis death. I feel honored to have beenone of his students, and I know he willcontinue to influence me throughoutmy lifetime. Fittingly, the last wordshe said to me when I last saw himwere, “Hazard Zet Forward.”

Many faculty at Seton Hall servedas my guides as I navigated

through college, but one very specialprofessor took on the role of lifelongtutor —W. Jack Jordan. On the firstday of class, as I listened to him talkabout the wonders and intricacies ofthe U.S. economy, I thought to myself,“Wow— he’s really committed tohelping his students become awesomerather than just adequate!” I quicklyrealized that we were not merely stu-dents to Jack, but were part of hisextended family. His commitment tohis students lasted far longer than onesemester, or even four years. For those

who chose to accept it, his commit-ment was for life.

As a member of Jack’s extendedfamily, I received the same attentionthat a father gives his daughter. Likeso many parents, he wanted to see meexcel and have opportunities that henever had. Jack was one of the mainreasons I was accepted into ColumbiaUniversity’s Ph.D. program. (Iultimately pursued my master’s degreeat Rutgers University.)

During my first year in graduateschool, he helped me again, asking meto house-sit for him during his sabbati-cal in Australia. Knowing that graduateschool is stressful enough withoutfinancial worries, Jack and his familywelcomed me into their home, allow-ing me to live rent-free and focus all ofmy energies on my studies.

The guidance I received from himwhen I returned to the University toteach in 1998 remains one of my mostcherished, but bittersweet, memories.It had been a few years since we hadspoken, but after saying hello at aneconomics alumni dinner, the nextthing he said was, “You are going tobring such energy to the department!”There was no question in his mindthat he had achieved his goal. He hadnurtured me and provided me with thetools that I needed to begin my ownpersonal journey on a road much likethe one he had taken, toward a life ofservice and fulfillment. Although hehas been gone for two years now, Icontinue to draw inspiration from him.

It’s hard to believe that I started outas a criminal justice major. After tak-

ing the required Oral Communicationcourse with Professor Deidre Yates,M.F.A., I declared a communicationminor — that is, until I took MassCommunication with Dr. EvelynPlummer. I still remember how shehelped us explore the concepts ofcommunication visionary MarshallMcCluhan, making everything easy tounderstand. The class was large, butshe took the time to get to know herstudents, and I looked forward to eachclass. I decided to become a communi-cation major.

Eventually, I took Group Dynamics,the class of Dr. Plummer’s that becamemy favorite. I later used in my careerthe concepts I learned in that class.For example, while working at a com-pany where we would have regularstaff meetings, I noticed several grouptrends that we had discussed in class.I used this knowledge to help facilitatesuccessful meetings in which everyonehad the opportunity to speak. I laterapplied these concepts in graduateschool and had great success in com-pleting group assignments. Currently, Iam using these methods while workingfor Dr. Plummer as an adjunct profes-sor. And I am still learning from her!

This fall, I begin working on a lawdegree. I believe that much of whatI have accomplished academicallywould not have been possible ifDr. Plummer hadn’t instilled in me

When I enrolled at Seton Hallin 1993 as an English major,

I didn’t have a clue as to how I’d usemy degree. Working through requiredEnglish classes, I discovered ProfessorLindroth. Pretty soon, I had enrolledin every class he taught. I have alwaysbeen a bookworm, but he inspired meto look at literature in a new light. I’vekept all my notebooks, and only wishI could find a book club that was ascompelling!

Still not knowing what I’d do withmy degree, in my junior year Iattended a meeting of the PublicRelations Student Society of America(PRSSA) at Seton Hall. In about anhour, I learned from its adviser, Profes-sor Kathy Rennie, how exciting publicrelations could be. She inspired me tominor in communication and pursue a

The Career Center has made thiseasy to do through Pirate Navigator, anonline mentoring program that connectsmentees to mentors. The program beganwith 41 mentors — a number that RichDavino, M.S., associate director ofemployer and alumni relations, expects togrow to nearly 200 over the next year.

Davino says he would like to “build adatabase of active and committed men-tors from a wide variety of professionalcareers and backgrounds.” Seton Hall isrecruiting mentors through targetede-mails and mailings. In addition, theAlumni Association’s Board of Directorshas formed a committee chaired by MarkLoGuidice ’81 to assist in recruitingalumni mentors. Schools and depart-ments within the University also areencouraged to develop their own mentor-ing programs using Pirate Navigator.

Students and alumni interested inbecoming mentees must meet withCareer Center professionals to assesstheir needs before receiving an accesscode. Mentees can then search the data-base to find mentors, by industry, job,academic major or geographic region.“One of the benefits of the program isthat, because the mentoring can takeplace online or by phone, there are nogeographic limitations. Regardless ofwhere a mentor lives, he or she canconnect with mentees from aroundthe country, while giving back to theUniversity,” Davino says.

Davino believes the program willserve mentees by helping to turn theirpassions and talents into meaningfulcareers. While a mentee can select asmany as 10 mentors each month,mentees are encouraged to take the timeto develop individual relationships withtheir mentors and form networks ofvaluable professional contacts.

Kathy shares her “real life” experi-ence with her students, teachingthings usually only learned on the job.I can’t tell you how many times in mycareer I have drawn from things Ilearned in her classroom to get a jobdone. My class notes remain morehelpful to me than most PR books I’veread. Kathy even helped me find myfirst full-time job. Professors Michael P. Ambrosio andDenis F. McLaughlin have made a

lasting impression on me, even 12years after my graduation from theSeton Hall University School of Law.

In the structure of Mike Ambrosio’scourse on Jurisprudence, heestablished a pathway for the studentin higher-level thinking and reasoning

that transcends the study of law. Hewas amenable and interested in stu-dents such as me, helping me realizethat there was more to law schoolthan robotically attending classes andtaking exams.

Notably, even before I had Mike asan instructor, he spoke cheerfully tomy infant son, Paul Jon, in one of theadministrative offices, at a time whenI needed some real encouragement tocontinue with my studies. That simplekindness will always be rememberedas an example of what Seton Hall Lawis about — brilliance with compassion.

While I remember afew humorous storiesthat Denis McLaughlintold in his Civil Proce-dure course, I alsorecall the very firstthing he said duringour first class meeting.It went something likethis: “Here you are.You’ve made it to lawschool. You arespecial; you are notgoing to be doctors whosew up stomachs, butyou are going to belawyers, and that, too, is special. Youwill have clients who may need youjust as much. Return their phone calls.Be diligent as you serve them. Neverlet them down. Because you are goingto be lawyers.”

At another crucial point, Denis wasmy sounding board as I sorted out thepros and cons of continuing with mystudies. In the end I stuck it out, vastlyimproving my academic performance.

Over the years, I have kept in touchwith both of these great men. Each

one has truly cultivated in me a lastingmindset of leadership. I have appliedelements of their didactic approachesin my own undergraduate adjunctteaching at three universities.

work to ProfessorGottlieb. When I trans-ferred to Seton Hall as ajunior in 1988, I plannedto go into public rela-tions. In hindsight, Irealize that I had noidea what that meant.

The next year, I tookHistory of AmericanJournalism with Profes-sor Gottlieb simplybecause it was a requiredclass. Since it wasn’t PR-

related, I had put it off until my senioryear. (While I kicked myself for nottaking this course sooner, I’m thankfulthat I didn’t put it off until my lastsemester!)

The subject matter was immedi-ately intriguing, and I couldn’t waitfor the next assignment. It wasthrough these assignments thatProfessor Gottlieb noticed me. As atransfer student, I didn’t know manypeople on campus, but she motivatedme to get involved. It wasn’t long

before she convinced me to write myfirst article for The Setonian, of whichshe was the faculty adviser. ByDecember 1989, I had written threefront-page articles. I was hooked.

There is nothing more meaningfulto me than adding my byline to afinished article. It’s a signature, asymbol that I have put my all into thepiece. Professor Gottlieb instilledthis work ethic in me, and I credither for teaching journalistic integrityby example.

She saw potential in me that Iwas too young to see in myself; sheencouraged me, helped me to makechoices, challenged me to pushmyself, and above all, trust in myself.

Noone could have convinced thisteenager fromWisconsin that

New Jersey would become my home

for what is now six years. I didn’t knowanyone at Seton Hall — and had nevereven heard of South Orange until Ivisited on a sunny Friday in April 1995.

At first sight, the campus seemedquiet. However, the one person whogreeted my mother and me later onbecame a role model who changed mylife. Standing in front of McNultyHall, Dr. Steven House, who had awelcoming smile, represented every-thing Seton Hall stands for. Heshowed me the science labs, discussedthe rigorous curriculum and spokeabout Seton Hall’s reputation ofpreparing students for medical school.

But beyond promoting Seton Hall,Dr. House showed me what the truemeaning of “teacher” is — a mentor,role model and friend. In my junioryear, I had Dr. House for VertebratePhysiology, the most challenging courseof my undergraduate and graduate edu-cation. In addition to teaching the mate-rial, he taught us how to study, pushingus when we thought we had nothing leftto give and making an extraordinaryeffort to reach each student.

Over the four years, I watched Dr.House teach, advise students and sup-port student-athletes at games andmatches, making sure we developednot only as students, but also as people.

Dr. House was the adviser for AlphaEpsilon Delta, the pre-health profes-sions honor society, for which I servedas president. During my senior year,I addressed students at our year-enddinner. As I looked around at the sen-iors who were leaving for medical,dental and veterinary schools, we allhad tears in our eyes, knowing that wehad to leave the man who had guidedus so well. Two years later, my formerclassmates and I still feel that Dr.House couldn’t have prepared usbetter. It is because of him that webecame critical thinkers, successful inour work and, most importantly, com-passionate people.

It has been more than a decade since I sat in a political science class taught byRon Foreso ’74. Yet, when I recently returned to Parsippany High School tointerview this esteemed New Jersey Teacher of the Year and member of theNational Teacher’s Hall of Fame, I found that although the curriculum mayhave changed since I was a student, the educator — and his approach toteaching — remain very much the same.—Carol Stavraka

Throughout his 28-year teaching career, Ron Foreso ’74 hasworked the kind of hours that more often are associated withhigh-level corporate executives. Waking before dawn and

usually arriving in the Parsippany High School parking lot ahead ofthe custodians, he frequently is one of the last people to leave theschool in the evening.In between, the Stanhope resident teaches a full course load that

includes U.S. history, military history and political science classes;advises five student organizations; is the announcer for three schoolathletic teams; and organizes and assists with student activities andvolunteer initiatives whenever the need arises.Foreso’s seemingly boundless energy stems from an infectious

enthusiasm for the subject matter he teaches as well as for the profes-sion to which he has dedicated his life.Born in Orange and raised in West Orange, Foreso spent much of

his boyhood dreaming about the military.“My parents took me to a West Pointfootball game, and that was it: I wantedto be a soldier and maybe a general,”he recalls.Foreso’s military aspirations

sparked a love of history that grewthroughout his high school years atSeton Hall Preparatory School. At thetime, the school was located on theSouth Orange campus, giving Foresohis first glimpse into college life.He has fond memories ofthese years, despite theuncomfortable feelinghe sometimes hadwhen walkingaround

campus in a blazer bearing the school’s seal. “As part of the dresscode, Prep students wore school blazers, which made us stand outfrom the undergraduates. But being on campus definitely gaveme a taste of what Seton Hall was all about,” he says.Upon graduation from Seton Hall Prep, Foreso received a

prestigious appointment to study at the U.S. Military Academy atWest Point. Although he left after two years, he has no regrets abouthaving been a cadet. “It was a great experience and I have thehighest regard for the academy,” he recalls. Foreso went on to serveseveral years as an officer in the U.S. Army Reserve.When he returned to New Jersey, Foreso again was drawn to the

South Orange campus, this time as an undergraduate at Seton HallUniversity. He quickly found his niche, majoring in history and pur-suing a teaching certificate. Foreso also joined a fraternity, where hedeveloped close friendships with many of his classmates.At Seton Hall, Foreso began to develop an appreciation for the

complexities of teaching. “I’ve always had a tremendous respect forteachers,” he says, noting that his mother taught at the Saint CloudElementary School in West Orange for 39 years. “But the professorsI encountered at Seton Hall took this appreciation to a new level,”he adds. Two Seton Hall professors of history — Edward S. Shapiro,Ph.D. and Bernhard Scholz, Ph.D. — profoundly influenced hiscareer. “They were tough, but you learned a tremendous amountfrom them,” he says. “After taking their courses, I couldn’t wait to getinto my own classroom.”Foreso’s chance came in September 1974, when he was hired to

teach at Parsippany High; it was his first — and to date, his only —job. As with most teachers, he found the first year to be the hardest,

as he devoted the first weeks tocarefully preparing and then lec-turing at the head of the class-room, stone-faced and serious.The teacher soon learned that

he could better engage studentsby incorporating his own interestsand enthusiasm into his lessonplans. “History is exciting to me.When students witness myenthusiasm, it gets their atten-tion,” he says. “That is the firststep toward learning.”

One way that Foreso makes U.S. history come to life is by bring-ing into the classroom items from his American military collection,which comprises several thousand pieces he has collected during thelast 40 years. “They are very real pieces of history that the studentscan relate to,” he says. Among these treasures are an original pieceof hardtack (a cracker-like ration for soldiers) from the Spanish-American War; the medals, decorations and insignia of an Army offi-cer who served as a translator during the Tokyo War Crimes Tribunalat the end of World War II; and the presentation sword of a Unionofficer wounded during the first Battle of Bull Run.

Educator’s Enthusiasm Makes History Come Alive

One of the nation’s most respected teachers, Foresoviews teaching “not as a chosen profession, but as a way of life.”

Believing that his responsibility as a teacher extends far beyondthe classroom, Foreso finds that his enthusiasm for his students canmake a difference in their lives. “I want kids to have pride in theirschool and themselves,” he notes. “By having pride in themselves,they develop pride and respect for others.”During his career, the social studies teacher has worked tirelessly

to foster school spirit and pride. At times during those years, Foresonotes, young people have been dismissed as apathetic, a stereotypehe has never subscribed to. As the adviser or co-adviser to manyschool organizations, including the Pep Club, Varsity Club, HistoryClub, Interact (the high school branch of the Rotary Club) and thejunior class, he believes that students care as long as their teacherscare, too. “You need to let students know that you are interestedbeyond the four walls of the classroom,” he says.Foreso finds that his students often demonstrate a remarkable

ability to serve others. In 1997, at the request of a friend, he recruit-ed students to write to American soldiers in war-torn Bosnia. Soon,students throughout the school district volunteered to help with a“Books for Bosnia” campaign. As a result, 2,000 boxes of schoolsupplies were sent to Bosnian children. That same commitment toleadership and service was evident following September 11, 2001.Almost overnight, students collected enough food and rescue sup-plies to fill an entire room and raised more than $1,300 for the fami-lies of victims. “One of the most important responsibilities we haveas citizens is community service. These efforts demonstrate theability of students to become critical thinkers who can affect changein the real world,” Foreso says.Over the years, Foreso’s approach to teaching has been lauded

by numerous local and national organizations, including beingnamed New Jersey Teacher of the Year in 1999 by the Council forAdvancement and Support of Education. His most notable honorwas being inducted into the National Teacher’s Hall of Fame in2001. Chosen from more than 8,000 nominations, he was one of fiveinductees that year, and is one of only 50 teachers who havereceived this honor bestowed upon the “unsung heroes” ofpublic and private pre-K-12 schools.Uncomfortable with the idea of being singled out for praise,

Foreso prefers to thinkof the award as ashared honor. “It’s notabout me, it’s abouteverybody who everhelped me, every col-league I’ve ever hadand every student I’veever worked with,” hesays. He observes thathe could not have doneit without his wife,Kathy, whom hemarried just weeksbefore he began histeaching career, and

their daughter, Katie, now 20 years old. “They’ve put up with mefor so many years,” he laughs.As the recipient of this prestigious award, Foreso feels obliged not

only to represent his profession, but also to share his ideas with otherteachers. One message he clearly sends is the importance of respond-ing to student needs. “Every new group of kids is a little different.Your teaching philosophy may remain essentially the same, but youhave to be willing to adapt,” he affirms.Being adaptable is certainly true in regard to the Internet, Foreso

says. In April, during a conference hosted by Seton Hall’s Collegeof Education and Human Services (CEHS), he advocated creatinghigh-tech classrooms. The conference, attended by 400 New Jerseyteachers and members of the Seton Hall community, was part ofProject SHURE (Seton Hall University Revitalizing Education).This three-year, $1 million grant awarded to CEHS supports theU.S. Department of Education’s Preparing Tomorrow’s Teachers toUse Technology initiative.“Today’s high school student was born holding a computer

mouse,” he reflects. After his own rocky start with computers in 1996,“when I struggled with figuring out how to turn the thing on,” Foresosays he now sees the Web “not as a threat, but as the greatest teach-ing tool in history.”Foreso uses interactive learning not only in his classroom but

also as a student. He is earning a master’s degree in teaching throughan online program at Marygrove College in Detroit and expects tograduate this summer. After all, he says, “being a teacher meansthat you must never stop learning yourself.”

“No matter where we’re from, nomatter how different we mightlook, we all have the same

needs, the same hurts, the same dreams,”Carmela (Molly) Maffei, M.A. ’95 remindsher third-graders. It’s a lesson she tries toteach, in one way or another, over and overagain in her classroom at Crim PrimarySchool in Bridgewater.Day in and day out, Maffei’s 24 students

do their fair share of reading, writing andarithmetic. But in addition to the “threeR’s,” Maffei insists upon a fourth: respect.“It’s what our classroom is all about,”declares the 34-year veteran of teaching.“It’s what we do. It’s who we are. Werespect others.”Respect might not be the first word

that comes to mind when second-gradershear they have been assigned to Ms.Maffei’s classroom, especially given allthe tall tales the older kids have passedon over the years. While Maffei admits tobeing a little strict with her charges, shedraws the line at being called mean. “Ithink they pretty quickly come to seethat’s not so,” Maffei says. In fact, shemakes it her business to establish a spacewithin her classroom where children feelsafe. “When you create an environmentwhere kids are not afraid and where learning is fun, learning justhappens — almost by itself.”A Montclair native, Maffei graduated from Caldwell College

in 1968 with a bachelor’s degree in social studies and elementaryeducation. She’s been teaching in Bridgewater ever since. “In thebeginning you’re so busy just mastering the curriculum,” Maffeinotes. “But little by little, you become more confident, as youlearn more and more about what works — and doesn’t work —with kids.” Crim Primary is only the second school she hastaught in; she tried her hand at first and second grades, butenjoys most of all working with third-graders. “They come in assecond-graders and they leave as fourth-graders. It’s an extraordinaryleap. I love watching it.”None of this necessarily came naturally to Maffei. She might have

ended up a nurse, had it not been for a no-love-lost relationshipwith high school chemistry. But she’s clearly a woman who hasfound her place in the classroom. “This is my world,” Maffeisays with a broad smile, gesturing around a room piled high withbooks, crafts and projects of all sorts. But the room speaks less of

clutter than of energy — the day’s debrisgiving witness to lessons learned andjobs well done.Knowing that the tone she sets will

be followed by her students, Maffeiworks hard at modeling the behaviorshe expects in the classroom. “It’s impor-tant that I listen to them, really and trulylisten,” she emphasizes. “When they seethat I’m listening, they, in turn, learn tolisten to one another.”Maffei says her students aren’t the

only ones who come away with importantlessons. “You learn not to take yourselftoo seriously,” she remarks. “When I’mwith my students, they give me the giftof freedom— freedom to be silly.” Shetakes her students’ needs to heart. “Weunderestimate what they can do,” sheinsists. “They can do and become somuch more, if you just take the time totell them— and show them.”In taking her own learning to heart

as well, Maffei has completed more than23 continuing education courses, bothin the Bridgewater-Raritan RegionalSchool District and at several NewJersey colleges and universities.It was a good friend who first brought

Maffei to Seton Hall in 1990 for hergraduate work. “After all those years, I really wasn’t sure I wouldgo back for a degree,” she says. But being back in the classroom— albeit not in front of the blackboard — was invigorating. “Ifound myself raising my hand more and more. And then the pro-fessors started asking me to share my experiences,” she notes.Maffei’s insistence on respect and understanding in the classroom

proved she was more than ready when, in 1994, the state of NewJersey mandated that Holocaust education, genocide studies andprejudice reduction be included in all public school curricula. Shebegan by assembling a library of children’s literature dealing with theHolocaust. “To get third-graders involved in a story — to get them sowrapped up in it so that it’s no longer just a story, but becomes some-thing that they are a part of — is a wonderful feeling,” she says. Eachday, Maffei gathers her students and reads aloud to them stories thatelicit their empathy. “I love watching their faces. I love watchingthem think— and feel,” she says. “And when the discussion takesoff, without being teacher-directed, that’s really special.”Maffei brings a deeply felt passion to these discussions. Commission on Holocaust Education in1998, she recalls being surprised by hertears as she looked out over Jerusalem, justafter dawn one morning. “I was moved justto be there, in that city that has meant somuch to the Jews — and to all of us,” sheremembers. She quickly decided to learnmore, returning to Seton Hall to do post-graduate work in the Department ofJewish-Christian Studies.But just as Maffei has wept over

Jerusalem she might be just as likely to crytears over the Wounded Knee Massacre in1890, the bombing of Hiroshima in 1945 orthe violence that erupted during a 1965march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. Over the course of theschool year, she shares with her students the stories of NativeAmericans, slavery and civil rights, as well as the internment ofJapanese-Americans during World War II. Her students read books,write poems, draw pictures and sing songs. Once a year, the class pro-duces a play. And in all these stories and all these activities, teacherand students alike find common bonds of human experience.Following further work at Rutgers University’s Allen and

Joan Bildner Center for the Study of Jewish Life and at the

International School of Holocaust Studies atYad Vashem in Israel, Maffei has emerged aleader in Holocaust education. She has partici-pated in curriculum development and presentedher literary approach to elementary school facul-ties, Holocaust organizations, the College ofSaint Elizabeth and the Educational MediaAssociation of New Jersey. Maffei also serveson the advisory board of Seton Hall’s SisterRose Thering Endowment for Jewish-ChristianStudies, which has provided scholarships tomore than 280 New Jersey teachers since itsinception in 1993. The endowment makes itpossible for them to learn about and teach theHolocaust through graduate courses offered

through the Department of Jewish-Christian Studies.Many of Maffei’s lessons take on an even deeper meaning

when guests such as Margit Feldman, a survivor of several Naziconcentration camps, speak to her third-graders. “Margit is amaz-ing,” Maffei says. “She’s 72 — and still telling her story.” Allof Maffei’s students become, in turn, witnesses empowered topass the story along to others. Several years ago, Maffei taughtFeldman’s granddaughter. “It was an extraordinary privilege,”Maffei says, “my turn to give something back.”

In 2001-02, strong show-ings from several SetonHall University sports

teams — including men’ssoccer, women’s basketball,and men’s and women’strack and field — helpedthe Athletics Program buildupon its reputation forrecruiting top-notch athletes.

But beyond the court andthe playing field, SetonHall student-athletes alsohave made names for them-selves in the classroom. Asof June 1, more than 100 hadreceived local, Universityand national recognition fortheir academic achievementsand scholarship during theyear (see sidebar). Theawards include some of the

nation’s most prestigious —and competitive — student-athlete honors, includingmultiple spots on theVerizon Academic All-America teams; a designa-tion as a BIG EAST/Aeropostale Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year; anNCAA PostgraduateScholarship; and an invita-tion to the weeklongNCAA Foundation Lead-ership Conference, whichfocuses on developingstudent-athletes into com-munity and campus leaders.

Seton Hall’s support net-work offers services to helpstudent-athletes succeedacademically. The networkwas created by and is

administered throughthe Office of AcademicSupport Services forStudent-Athletes, partof the Division ofAcademic Affairs.The office providesacademic advisement,tutoring, computerlabs, supervised studysessions for individualsand teams, and consis-tent interaction withfaculty members. Inaddition, its Life Skillsworkshops provideessential academic,professional and per-sonal developmentopportunities.

The office’s direc-tor, Robin Cunning-ham ’78, M.A.’84/Ed.S. ’94, a former

Seton Hall student-athleteand the first woman toreceive an athletic scholar-ship to the University, wasinstrumental in forming theoffice in 1984. She explainsthe University’s approach:“Admittedly, student-athletes face some very spe-cial challenges, especially inlearning to balance theirschool work with sportscommitments. We arecommitted to helping themachieve and maintain aproductive balance betweenthe two.”

One way this is accom-plished comes via constantcommunication with advis-ers, who are drawn from theoffice’s small staff (whichincludes Matthew Geibel’93/M.B.A. ’95, associatedirector, and CourtneySanfelippo ’00/M.A. ’02,academic adviser). Eachteam is assigned an adviserwho concentrates on gettingto know the team as awhole, as well as the indi-vidual needs of players. Inaddition to overseeing com-pliance with University andNCAA requirements, theadviser also acts as a liaisonbetween coaches, studentsand faculty members, moni-toring classroom perform-ance and sharing classroomfeedback with student-athletes and their coaches.

Students must do theirpart, too. “It can bechallenging for student-athletes to meet their

academic requirements,”notes Geibel, who has beenworking with student-ath-letes for nine years. “Thecurrent group is one of themost motivated groups Ihave encountered. Clearly,their commitment is makinga difference in theclassroom.” As of the FallSemester 2001, student-athletes boasted a cumula-tive GPA of 3.044, which ismore than a full point aboveNCAA eligibility require-ments. In addition, 18 stu-dent-athletes graduated thisyear with academic honors— five summa cum laude,four magna cum laude andnine cum laude.

Academic support beginseven before students begintheir studies at Seton Hall.When potential recruits visitcampus, “We sit down withthem and let them knowwhat is expected of them,and what we can do to helpthem become successful,”Cunningham explains.

Also critical to the pro-gram’s success are the LifeSkills workshops, seminarsand community serviceopportunities that help stu-dent-athletes thrive, both atSeton Hall and beyond.Classes on career develop-ment, time management,leadership strategies andcommunication, saysCunningham, “provide ourstudents with the skills andtools they need to functionin the real world.”

For Brigid Sullivan ’02, a meeting with RobinCunningham ’78, M.A. ’84/Ed.S. ’94 during hersenior year in high school convinced her to enroll at

Seton Hall. “From the start, I received very personalizedattention,” says Sullivan, who became a standout on thewomen’s soccer team. “Academics have always been veryimportant to me and I recognized that, at Seton Hall, mystudies could continue to be a priority.”

Sullivan says the advice and instruction shereceived in her freshman year from Cunninghamand her staff in the Office of Academic SupportServices for Student-Athletes were absolutelyessential in helping her adjust to being a stu-dent-athlete. “Freshman year is tough becauseyou’re not used to the demands of college, andyou’re not used to the hectic sports schedule,”Sullivan notes, “But no matter how busy thingswere, Robin always made time for me. At Seton Hall,you are never a number, you are always a name.”

By the close of her senior season, Sullivan had set two schoolrecords in soccer, playing and starting in all 74 of her career games.

While Sullivan is very proud of her athleticaccomplishments, she says she is even prouderof the awards she won this year that also recog-nized her classroom achievements. She wasnamed to the Verizon Academic All-AmericaThird Team and All-Academic District 2 Teamand received a BIG EAST/Aeropostale FemaleScholar-Athlete Award. “This recognition sym-bolizes all that I am about,” she says. “I owe agreat deal of my success to Robin and her staff.”

Now, as Sullivan begins studies this fall fora Master of Arts in Education in Seton Hall’sCollege of Education and HumanServices, she plans to give something back

to her fellow student-athletes. As a graduate assistant, shewill tutor in the Office of Academic Support Services for

Student-Athletes. Sullivan also will be providing some of thesame services that she says “helped me realize my potential on thesoccer field and in the classroom, and inspired me to pursue newchallenges in every aspect of my life.”

Every Friday for five months, carrying hockey sticks andbags filled with equipment, three Seton Hall UniversityM.B.A. students boarded the 4 p.m. New York-bound

train in South Orange and headed for Harlem. Broughttogether by their love of the sport, Bradley Hadfield,M.B.A. ’02, Mark Hovermann, M.B.A. ’02 andMichaelBarton, M.B.A. ’02 journeyed to 110th Street. They founda warm welcome there as they coached youngsters in theIce Hockey in Harlem (IHIH) program.

As hockey enthusiasts, the three students had been awareof IHIH for a while. But after hearing a call for volunteers ona New York radio station public service announcement,Hadfield was spurred to get involved. He enlisted the helpof two friends, Hovermann and Barton. In Fall 2000, theybegan sharing their hockey skills with the “Pups” — threegroups of 20 children between the ages of 6 and 8. Duringthe ice clinics that started at 5:30 p.m. and lasted until9 p.m., the coaches concentrated on the fundamentals ofhockey through drills, obstacle courses and games.

“When we first started coaching, the kids didn’t knowanything about hockey,” Hovermann recalls. “We had tostart with the basics, including teaching them the process ofgetting dressed in the gear — everything from what goes onfirst to how to lace up their skates.”

Ice Hockey in Harlem, whose motto is “Education is theGoal,” began in 1987 with 40 participants between the agesof 9 and 12. Under the tutelage of founder and ChairmanDave Wilk, former New York Ranger Pat Hickey and volun-teers, the nonprofit community organization has grown toserve more than 250 youths. They play at the outdoorLasker Rink, on the northern edge of Central Park. Theyalso attend mandatory weekly classroom sessions that usehockey as a catalyst to improve performance in geometry,reading, writing, history, geography, art and other subjects.

For the Seton Hall students, the coaching counted towarda 20-hour service project required for a course in socialresponsibility, which is part of the 42-credit Master ofBusiness Administration program in the Stillman School ofBusiness. “The social responsibility class was designed tohelp students understand how business operates in a largersociety,” says Karen Boroff, Ph.D., dean of the StillmanSchool. “The service project allows students to give some-thing back to their community. Our goal at the businessschool is to develop ambassadors of goodwill. Not only canstudents do good work in their jobs but they can use theirtalents to enrich the lives of others.”

While most business schools require students to take anethics class, only 10 to 15 percent require a service project atthe M.B.A. level, Boroff says. Hadfield observes, “I believethe service component of the M.B.A. is something that thebusiness school, its students and alumni can be proud of.

This project reminds us to give something back and reaffirmsthe importance of a healthy balance between work, familyand the community.”

In the M.B.A. program, which uses a multidisciplinaryapproach that integrates the latest technology into a strategicplanning process, students are empowered with the manage-ment skills needed to be leaders and decision makers.

“We believe we have a very competitive program thatoffers part-time students a cost-effective M.B.A. that can becompleted in seven semesters, compared to other local pro-grams that take 10 semesters to complete,” Boroff notes.

This May marked the first commencement for studentsin the 42-credit program. During the Stillman School’sHooding Ceremony, all three coaches were presented withthe Service Project Award in recognition of their contribu-tions to IHIH.

“The Ice Hockey in Harlem service program was ahome-grown project — our students were able to combinetheir fondness for hockey with a wonderful service to thehockey players in Harlem. This emulates exactly what weare asking our students to do,” Boroff says.

For Barton, “The best part of volunteering was seeingfirst-hand the difference you can make in the lives of chil-dren. They are all good kids, and they just love being out onthe ice.” Inspired by his positive experience, Barton hopessome day to take his coaching one step further and workwith a youth league team.

Ed.S. ’82, a priest fornearly 55 years, died onApril 6 at the age of 81.

Father Gavin devoted30 years of his life as apriest to Seton Hall University. Over the years,he served in the Office ofAlumni Relations, Campus Ministry and the Graduate StudiesOffice. He also was a member of the Priest Communityand an alumnus five times over, having earned a bache-lor’s degree as well as four graduate degrees.

With his outgoing nature, Father Gavin madestudents feel at home on the South Orange campus,even after his retirement in 1988. Taking several walkseach day with his Irish setter, Tara, he often stopped tovisit with students and amuse them with lightheartedjokes. “He was one of the best-loved priests on campus… many of the students looked to him as the Universitygrandfather,” recalled Reverend James Spera ’73/M.Div.’76, director of Campus Ministry and vice rector of theCollege Seminary.

Extremely proud of his Irish heritage, Father Gavinhad served as chaplain of the Ancient Order of Hiberni-ans, Division Nine, in Montclair since the mid-1990s. Anavid painter, Father Gavin expressed everything from hisdeep Catholic faith (his subjects included Pope John PaulII and Our Lady of Lourdes) to his love for the beautifulIrish countryside in his works.

“Father Frank was, to say the least, a very faithful anddedicated priest,” observed Reverend Joseph Wortmann’54, S.T.L., a teacher at Seton Hall Preparatory School andmember of the Priest Community. Speaking at FatherGavin’s Mass of Christian Burial, which took place in theChapel of the Immaculate Conception, Father Wortmannadded, “Father Frank loved the priesthood.”

Indeed, Father Gavin’s love for the priesthood wasdemonstrated in numerous ways, including the establish-ment of the Reverend Francis T. Gavin Seminarian Fundin 1999. Contributing most of his life savings to the fund,Father Gavin designed it as a way to meet the everydayneeds of seminarians, providing aid with necessities suchas clothing and car insurance. “The Lord has blessed mewith ample resources to provide for myself and for others.Thanks to Him, I have the ability to give back to Immac-ulate Conception Seminary a lasting gift that will benefitfuture generations,” he once said.

Back in my day, we didn’t have a name for it. I was stillwet behind the ears and just a few weeks beyond my

Seton Hall University graduation in 1975 when I was hiredat the Associated Press. A veteran journalist sat down at thecomputer screen and went over my rather convoluted arti-cle about the Board of Public Utilities (talk about asnoozer). He didn’t just edit my writing, he showedme why he was making changes. And hemade plenty of them. But instead of feel-ing upset and unsettled when he wasdone, I was relieved. Here was some-one who knew what he was doingand knew how to show me what todo. I kept working with him andeventually got it right.

Nowadays, we call that mentor-ing. And we recognize that mentor-ing is important to young peoplemoving into the professions. It’sgood for the one who’s on the receiv-ing end, it bodes well for the future ofthe profession and it’s also good for theone who’s giving the advice.

Fast forward 13 years — I’m back at SetonHall as an instructor in the communication department.Now it’s my turn to teach. But so much of the teaching isdone outside of the classroom. On Wednesday nights, asThe Setonian is being put together, I sit down at the com-puter screen and ask the student whose byline is on thestory to sit down next to me. And then I do what that veteran journalist did so many years before. I see it as myresponsibility. A way of teaching by doing. We talk aboutstory construction, we talk about approaches to interview-ing, we talk about jobs in journalism and we both profitfrom the exchange.

By then, in 1988, we were using the term “mentoring.”And by then I myself had been mentored by both journal-ists and academics. I had gone back to grad school in 1985at the University of Maryland, where I met Dr. MaurineBeasley, one of the finest journalism historians in the coun-try (she’s still there, and is now a professor in the PhilipMerrill College of Journalism). She thought she saw

something worth working with in me. She taught me howto write history, she involved me in her research areas andshe showed me how to be a college professor. To this day, I owe her a continuing debt. She cites my work, she invitesme to speak at conferences, she recommends me as an his-torian to book editors in search of authors and she makes

sure I am thriving professionally.

This past academic year, I tried some-thing new at Seton Hall. I was

appointed dean of Freshman Studies, aprogram built on the strong belief thatmentoring makes a difference. I dis-covered within the program a formalapproach to the informal mentoringI had been doing and benefitingfrom all along. During the year, Iworked with about 100 members ofthe Class of 2005. They came to me

with academic crises, personal prob-lems and questions about their future.

It wasn’t necessarily my job to give themthe answers, but it was definitely my job to

help them find the answers for themselves. I’vediscovered that one of the most important things aboutmentoring is that the student needs to be open to adviceand guidance. And the mentor needs to be willing to viewstudents as individuals with problems specific to them.

By the end of the academic year, I had met individuallywith each of my freshmen before sending them on theirway. I told them they needed to introduce themselves tothe chair of their major and ask to meet with their new aca-demic adviser. But that’s the beauty of mentoring. It’s morethan just talking about courses and grade point averages. AsI say to my freshmen who are flying the coop, “You’ll havea new academic adviser next year. But remember this: I’ll always be your mentor.”
