1 Newsletter – October 2016 OPENING STATEMENT Welcome to a New Season of Tennis Welcome all members of Tauranga Lawn Tennis Club. This would normally be the column for the President’s Report, but we are still searching for a President for Tauranga Lawn. In the absence of a President, Carol has done a great job taking on some of the responsibilities, as well as sending the preliminary report to everyone while this newsletter was being produced. Todd’s input into a few of the “presidential” issues that have arisen is also appreciated. The weather has been temperamental over the beginning of Spring and therefore it has been difficult to plan a good hit on the courts. As expected, the El Niño weather patterns have brought a mixture of winter and summer weather; but I do seem to be putting the windscreen wipers on more than the air conditioner! Of major concern is the condition of the courts. Wear and tear on the artificial grass is to be expected, given that there is heavy use of the courts. We are still the largest tennis club in the Western Bay of Plenty. Kevin Tims, previous President and committee member, whom many of you know, along with other members of the committee, has done a lot of the preliminary investigative work with a view to getting some of the courts replaced. A provider has been appointed and work is under way on applications for funding for this project. While this is still a work in progress, we do expect some newly laid artificial grass courts early next year. Club days have been eventful with good turnouts on Saturdays. We will surely miss the continual beckoning of Peter’s and Alan’s voices as Club Captains running many of the Saturday club days, which both have moved on from. We do have a structured roster in place to cover these, so do expect different “DJs” so to speak, on each weekend! While there has been a considerable shuffle of committee members, we have new committee members who bring exciting and innovative prospects to the club. We do have vacancies for the roles of President and Vice President so if you think you could fill these roles please contact us. Justis Cheung

FROM THE CLUB SECRETARY’S DESK… INTRODUCING THE SECRETARY AND CLUB CAPTAIN – ANITA WALPOLE

Hello everyone, Anita here, your new Secretary and Club Captain! Having been a club member for many years, I think most of you already know me. For those of you who don’t – I’m very enthusiastic about tennis and Tauranga Lawn, which is an excellent club to belong to. It has given me and my family – all “tennis players”, lots of great tennis opportunities, experiences and friendships. On your behalf, I would like to thank the outgoing Secretary, Lynda Fleming, for the sterling service she has given to the club, on many occasions going

above and beyond the call of duty and expectations!! Thank you, Lynda. Finally, I am excited about my new roles, am looking forward to working with you all and will give it my best shot. KITCHEN RENOVATION PROJECT – SPONSORED BY PUB CHARITY

The kitchen renovation is now complete and ready for members to use and enjoy – A real success, the kitchen looks amazing.

I would like to acknowledge members, Mary Buchanan and Kay Wynn for their hours of work on the project and their considerable efforts over a year, co-ordinating the kitchen renovation from start to finish.

A big thank you to Mary and Kay –There have been lots of positive comments. AMERICAN THEME FOR SENIORS OPENING DAY With the American US Open theme we had stars, stripes and sunshine for our Summer Opening Day on 10 September. Life Member Maureen stepped in, stylishly serving up the “first ball” and the 2016/17 tennis season was under way for another year. Thanks Carol, you did well organising the happy hour, pizzas and spot prizes. Getting us in a celebratory mood… all went down well – the pizza a little too well, disappearing rather quickly. All in all, a fun start to the season at Tauranga Lawn.

NEW MEMBERS I would like to extend a very warm welcome to our new members who have joined us recently. SENIORS: Monique & Andrew Aitchison, Lance Brooks, Philip Brown & Yvonne Lambert, Jo Cole, Stuart Donald, Jackson Fraser, James Hawkes, Megan & Tristan Hewett, Megan & Ben Hoskin, Claudia Jones, David Kidd, Mike Lambert, Brian McKegg, Lukas Meyer, Steve Napier, Alex Power, Anna Ryan, Benjamin Paul Smith.

MIDWEEK LADIES’ NOTE Our new midweek committee for 2016/2017 consists of - Mary Buchanan, Judy Clark, Mary Foster (Secretary/Treasurer), Shirley Morrison (Convener), Anne Peel nee Almoner, and Kay Wynn. After a year in the planning, the kitchen project has been completed! Many thanks to Mary Buchanan and Kay Wynn, who were the project managers. Once the grant had come through, quotes from electricians, plumbers, and for new appliances were sought, as well as the flooring installation, which has made a huge difference to the spaciousness. Thanks also to Dave and his apprentices, Graeme and George Gilday for knocking out the wall and John Parker for doing a dump trip or two. Mary and Kay have been rewarded with a Prezzy card each as a token of our appreciation for making time to be available to open gates and unlock doors, moving “stuff” from the kitchen, boxing it up, then putting it back into the cupboards, not to mention cooking for the men! We cut the ribbon on Wednesday and declared “Mary-Kay's Kitchen” open! Hope everyone enjoys the new facility. Midweek Interclub teams have been finalised: two teams in Division One and one team in Division Two. FRIDAY NIGHT SENIOR INTERCLUB The Tennis Western BOP Friday night Interclub competition started on Friday 7 October and will run through to mid-December. Please note there will be no play on 21 October as this is Labour weekend. We look forward to a great competition – and it should be for Tauranga Lawn with eight teams entered, a record number I think. Good luck to all the Tauranga Lawn teams, enjoy your interclub tennis. PREMIER INTERCLUB Unfortunately we could not field a men’s Premier team for the 2016/17 season, but by way of the Friday night competition we are encouraging some of our promising junior players to come up through the ranks, with a view to having a truly awesome men’s team next year! For this year we have a pretty awesome ladies’ team captained by Anita Walpole with Joanne Alsop, Sussa Bailey, Toscana Bernie, Kadia Keller-Rice, Julia Newman, Lou Reid, Carys Robson, Kerbeigh Trollip and Hannah Walpole. Between now and Christmas there will be Premier play at Tauranga Lawn on some Saturday afternoons from 1.00pm – we shall endeavour to let you know beforehand when these matches are to be played, so that you have the opportunity to come along to lend your support and watch some high quality tennis.

JUNIOR TENNIS It will be good to say goodbye to winter and hello to the new summer tennis season. Luis and some of the juniors have been playing and competing throughout winter and they have travelled the globe! Corbyn Crowther travelled to Europe and had a great experience as well as great results; it makes us very proud at Tauranga Lawn to have one of our own out there competing at such a high level. Junior Interclub Just a reminder that Terms 4 and 1 are Interclub time. Please give some thought as to whether your child will be playing Interclub and also whether you would be prepared to manage a team. This year we are making a concerted effort to engage some of our younger or less experienced players with interclub. Please don't think your child is not ready or capable! The emphasis will be on fun and engagement as well as a bit of a run around! Open Day Recently we held our open day and by a miracle managed to have two hours of no rain in an otherwise entirely wet weekend. We got some lovely new members from this and even managed to convince some of the parents to join! Family Evenings We are looking to hold some family BBQs this year. It will be an opportunity for members and parents of members to get together and enjoy the club and its great facilities. Todd Morris Junior Convener

OTHER NEWS

MAINTENANCE LOG BOOK As with any property, there are always ongoing maintenance issues. To help us keep on top of them, we have placed a book downstairs in the document holder on the side of the cupboard. The book is labelled MAINTENANCE LOG. If you see anything around the clubrooms or grounds that needs attention, from a light bulb that’s blown or a wall that might need a good clean or a paint touch up, anything at all really, please write it in this book. Actually if you see a wall that needs a good clean, you could just clean it! When the issue has been dealt with, it will also be noted in the book so you can check on progress. Hopefully, this will be a more efficient means of communicating what needs to be done; you won’t have to track down someone to tell and things will get done more quickly. Of course, if the list gets very long, we may have to have another working bee, but at least we’ll know what to do. SUGGESTION BOX Just a reminder that we do have a suggestion box downstairs (located on the wall by the door to the ladies’ changing room). Feel free to use it and share your constructive ideas with the rest of us! It would be great if you signed your suggestion so we know who to thank.

LOST PROPERTY Please check the lost property box in the office to see if you are the owner of any of the many items that we have ‘collected’ over the year. Any unclaimed items will be washed thoroughly(!) and donated to a suitable charity.
