News from around the Circuit
West Bridgford
As the summer days give way to
Autumn, we look forward with great
anticipation to a new chapter in the
life of our church.
Recently, we have focussed upon
our desire to be a servant church,
welcoming friends and strangers
and reaching out to the community
seeking to present the gospel in an
inclusive and accessible way.
Now, as we eagerly await the arrival
of Rev Rach Ward we give thanks
for all that has been achieved in the
past and rejoice that the ground is
prepared for us to deepen our own
faith and be even more intentional
about bringing our friends and
neighbours to know more of Jesus.
The ministry of Rev Dr Paul Hill
helped us to grow together in many
ways and his support of our Family
Workers and of our Community
Engagement Worker have enabled
lots of new initiatives which we pray
will continue to bear fruit in future.
We know, for example, that Rach is
particularly keen for us to develop a
new area of work with children and
families by starting a monthly
‘Messy Church’. This will not be an
alternative to our normal Sunday
worship pattern, but an outreach to
develop a form of church which will
speak powerfully to and connect
with people who wouldn’t normally
come on a Sunday.
Regular activities such as Faith and
Light will continue to be an
important ministry too, providing
fellowship and worship for those
with learning difficulties and
making the church accessible to all
sections of the community.
Additionally, our weekday groups
such as Friends Together, Memory
Lane Café and Storytime provide
opportunities for us to be the hands
of Jesus serving those who have a
variety of needs and who as yet may
not be ready to call themselves
‘Christian’, but are certainly not far
from the Kingdom of God!
Special activities, such as our next
Christmas Tree Festival in
December will present further
opportunities for engagement with
the needy world outside our walls.
So, please join us on Friday 2nd
September at 7.30 pm when we
gather with friends from around the
circuit to welcome Rev Rach Ward.
We pray for her and for her ministry
here, asking that we all may be
open to the prompting of the Holy
Spirit and richly blessed in our
sharing and outreach.
News from around the Circuit
Endings and beginnings …
News from around the Circuit
Ruddington
Since we last went to print, baby
Alice Rose has made her debut!
Many congratulations to Simon and
Sarah on their beautiful daughter.
We feel blessed in the leadership of
our Section, and we extend a warm
welcome to Rev. Rach Ward and
Rev. David Haywood as they join
Simon as Circuit Presbyters with
responsibility for other Sections.
We have had three joyful
Christening Services welcoming
first William, later Zachary and then
Zane into the fellowship of the
Methodist Church.
Ruddington held an ‘Open Gardens’
weekend at the end of June, and
our Church provided refreshments
during the afternoons of both days.
Funds raised were shared equally
between Action for Children and
Save the Children; with ticket sales,
sales of cakes and drinks and extra
donations we raised £520, about a
third of the total raised by the whole
village!
On quite the foulest Saturday
morning weather of this summer so
far we held a table top sale, and
raised a surprising amount of
money for our recently-launched
Boiler Fund, given the few who were
brave enough to venture through
the monsoon-like conditions to
purchase home-made cake and
bric-a-brac!
The Women’s Fellowship and
Men’s Fellowship groups are
enjoying their summer break, and
the various children’s and young
people’s groups are looking forward
to the School holidays. The Boys’
Brigade and Girls’ Association held
a well-attended Awards Evening,
with Battalion Officers, families and
members of the Church family
there to support them. The Toddler
groups are thriving, and the leaders
would like to thank all the faithful
and hardworking members of the
refreshments rota for their help.
At the end of the summer holidays
we are looking forward to 3
mornings of holiday club for primary
school age children. This year our
club will have a Star Wars theme.
Harvest thanksgiving celebrations
are planned for 8th/9th October, this
year with an ‘old-fashioned’ Harvest
display.
We also hope to open up the
Church and have some stalls and
refreshments on the occasion of
the ‘Village Event’ on 3rd December.
News from around the Circuit
Bradmore
Our 3Cs (Coffee, Chat and Crafts)
have been busy over the last few
months – in the last newsletter I
mentioned that we were making a
donation to Zephyrs, part of the
Nottingham Hospitals Charity, and
we had a joyous visit from the
founders of the charity to receive
the £100 cheque from us. Work
has already begun on altering
existing space temporarily for
parents who have lost a young child
to use away from the wards, and
planning is in progress for a
separate small building.
The next fund-raising cause was the
Race for Life, which Dawn Wilby
entered and completed
successfully. She and the team she
was in raised over £300 on the day,
for Breast Cancer. We are also
supporting Breast Cancer Care with
a Strawberry Tea for the village in
August, with a quiz and
plant/produce stalls.
Our next project is going to be toilet-
twinning, inspired by the success of
other churches in the circuit, and it
is hoped the whole village will join
in the fund-raising for this.
September is the month for the
Notts Historic Churches Ride &
Stride fund-raising effort, this year
taking place of 10th September.
Both are Bradmore churches and
the parish church at Bunny will be
open to visitors, and for the first
time this year we are encouraging
Bradmore folk to join in a
sponsored walk or cycle-ride
between the three – and, of course,
further afield if they are inspired to
go further. Half the sponsorship
money is returned to the churches
nominated by the walker / rider, so
there is a good incentive to get
people involved.
Saturday 1 October is the date for
our next Family Event, 2:00pm -
4:30pm in the Community Hall, and
after successful Bugs’n’Bones
sessions in previous years we are
launching out in a different
direction with Jude Winwood’s
Beatfeet organisation. Her
“Rhythm for Life” session will give
everyone a chance to get
drumming, and afterwards we will
continue the musical theme
including making our own musical
instruments from whatever
materials come to hand. Suitable
for all ages, free entry (donations
welcome!).

News from around the Circuit
Keyworth
How important is prayer in your life
and that of your Church? Here at
Keyworth we have a prayer Group
that meets on a Thursday morning
in Church and a number of the
adults from our Toddler Praise
group are now starting to meet
together. Our District Chair held a
Prayer Fest throughout the District
including the Nottingham South
Circuit event here at Keyworth.
There are many examples of the
power of prayer and all of us should
put time aside for prayer to discern
what the Lord wants us to do or to
get direction in our lives. If you
haven’t been to your church prayer
group before how about giving it a
try you may be surprised at what
the Lord can reveal to you.
‘Meals for SANA’ is a new way of
supporting this worthy cause of
which our own Paul Johns is
involved. Over the next twelve
months a number of evening meals
are being offered, yes you pay but
all of the money goes to SANA, and
of course the company of new and
old friends makes for a special
experience. Two of our members
accompanied Paul on a week’s visit
to Bosnia and in particular
Srebrenica, a town that may be
familiar to those of us who
remember the Balkans war and
also the recent court cases at The
Hague. SANA wishes to fund a
number of projects to foster
reconciliation between the religious
and ethnic groups in the city.
You may have read in the last Plan
about Toilet twinning at Keyworth
by our young people. Well, we may
have some new loos if current
proposals are approved. Our
premises are used by many
organisations over the week and
when we have a capacity event we
often get a queue. So we are
considering revamping with the
intention of reducing the queues.
Like many of our buildings they
were designed to suit a time long
past and it’s an ongoing task to
update. Our proposed new loos will
cost a little more than they would in
some countries but what is the
price of a queue when you ‘want to
go’.
Do you do Easyfundraising.org.uk
to raise funds? We received nearly
£170 in the last financial year from
purchases made by members. By
using the easysearch search
engine instead of Google we also
get half a pence per search.
Currently it is at an average of 89
searches a week and, as they say,
every little helps: so get signed up
today!
News from around the Circuit
Radcliffe on Trent
The ‘Round the World’ fundraising
challenge took place at the
beginning of June and has so far
raised over £2000. The event was
a real success which encouraged
church members and local
community groups to become
active and raise money.
The Radcliffe Carnival went well in
spite of torrential rain in the
morning. The rain stopped before
the floats and procession set out-
so all the hard work painting and
decorating our float was not in vain.
Junior Church had a picnic at the
beginning of July to say ‘Goodbye’
to Abby Clark who has been working
with our young people, and
ecumenically in the village with
young people for the past 4 years,
initially during her gap year then
latterly whilst studying for her
degree at St John’s College. She
has been a real blessing and her
gifts and enthusiasm have richly
blessed us. We had a farewell
service and lunch for Abby on
Sunday 24 July.
The Farewell Barn Dance on 15 July
for Janet was well supported and
was a good evening which was led
by the Windmill Folk.
On 24 July we held a ‘Summer Ball’
at Grange Hall in the evening, then
on 31 July we said our final
‘Goodbyes’ to Janet as she led her
last service in Radcliffe. We say a
big ‘Thank you’ to Janet for the 7
years she has spent ministering
among us and we wish her every
blessing as she continues God’s
work in Coalville.
Our Harvest Festival will be on 25
September led by Nicky Geeson.
Our Church Anniversary weekend
will be 8 & 9 October. On the
Saturday evening there will be a
safari supper and on the Sunday
the service will be led by David
Morley.
Willersley Week 14-17 March 2016
Each day Anne Browse, MWiB
National President, led us through
her life ‘This is my Story, this is my
song’, taking us on a journey from a
young child and the first person who
had an influence on her Christian
life, through becoming a teacher of
German, to where she is now, as our
President. With interesting and
often humorous anecdotes,
punctuated with hymns that were
special to her, we were left in no
doubt that we are in good hands.
Swanwick National Residential
weekend 15-17 April 2016
Over 250 women from around the
Connexion enjoyed friendship,
fellowship, sharing stories and
worship around the theme of
‘Finding our voice: heritage, gender
and story’. Keynote addresses were
from Dr Jill Barber, Vice President of
the Methodist Conference, firstly on
prophecy and prayer, secondly on
passion and protest, illustrated with
stories of women from our
Methodist history.
Circuit Easter Offering Service
24 April 2016 at Ruddington
The title ‘Child, get up!’ came from
the story of the healing of Jairus’
daughter in Luke’s gospel, and with
stories from India, related to the
plight of the Dalit people, those in
the very lowest position in the caste
system in Indian society. For 5
years, from 2011 to 2016, MWiB
has worked on a Dalit Solidarity
social justice campaign, producing
resources and arranging events to
raise awareness, prompt action,
and inspire prayer. An impressive
£1640 for the World Mission Fund
was raised in the Circuit through the
Easter Offering.
This service, together with Paul
Field’s Concert on 21 May at
Methodist Central Hall, made a
fitting climax to the MWiB project on
Dalit Solidarity.
After the Willersley Evening Meal
on 25 May, Ruby Beech gave a very
informative and entertaining talk of
her time as Vice President of the
Methodist Conference, (2007/8), at
the same time continuing her role
as Assistant Sergeant of Arms in the
Houses of Parliament.
District Day 11 July at Riverside
Church, Burton -on-Trent
During the morning session we were
pleased to hear that £75,000 had
been raised for the Dalit project to
provide girls’ hostels to enable them
to attend school. The current
national project is for Dementia
Friendly Churches, and resource
packs are available.
Our District Network banner (now
outdated) is kept at Epworth Old
Rectory, where the current
exhibition runs until 29 October
entitled ‘Transforming the world
from the kitchen. The story of
women working together in British
Methodism.’
Our District President’s charity for
the next 2 years Is ‘Chicks’ – making
memories…giving hope; which
provides respite breaks for
disadvantaged children and young
carers in the UK. They have a local
holiday centre at Ashbourne.
At 2pm Rev Loraine Mellor led the
Commissioning Service for our new
District President Sue Nickson, with
Rev Mike Redshaw giving the
address. The local ladies gave us a
delicious tea, which rounded off a
wonderful day of news and
fellowship, well worth the anxiety of
finding the venue!
Next District Day at Bingham on 25
October when Sue Nickson will
report on the World Federation
Conference at Houston, Texas from
29th August.
New Editor for the Circuit News wanted I have really enjoyed producing this newsletter each quarter and especially
meeting people from across the circuit as I have received their
contributions or delivered the printed copies each time. It has been a
pleasure to serve the circuit for the past 4 years in this voluntary role
alongside my paid work with children, young people and families.
However, I feel that now is the right time to allow someone else to take
over and to take the newsletter in a new direction.
As editor of the Circuit News you would have the privilege of serving the
Nottingham South Circuit in a fun and rewarding role. You would have the
opportunity to “put your own stamp” on this publication and further
develop the Circuit News whilst still encouraging good communication
across the churches of our circuit. The time commitment is low and the
total time required is roughly equivalent to about 8 hours work, 4 times a
year (at the end of January, April, July and October).
For more details about what is involved please get in touch with me for a
no-obligation chat. Andy Proffitt
