Fall, leaves, fall

Fall, leaves, fall; die, flowers, away; Lengthen night and shorten day; Every leaf speaks bliss to me Fluttering from the autumn tree.

I shall smile when wreaths of snow Blossom where the rose should grow; I shall sing when night's decay Ushers in a drearier day.

Paco’s Page

Welcome to the October newsletter. I hope that everyone has had a nice summer. We have started to get back to normal after the summer vacations, the weather is a getting cooler now and the nights are clos-ing in. All groups are back to action now that the Autumn is here upon us so I hope that you all get stuck in and enjoy the coming months with the opportunities that West Bridgford U3A offers its members. By the time that this gone to print there should be a new Italian group, a Holiday Companions 2 and maybe an Architecture group as well so I hope that you all have a good time and enjoy yourselves.

July Open Meeting The July speaker cancelled at the last moment due to a be-reavement in the family and we were lucky to find a replace-ment speaker at short notice in our committee member Joe Colls who gave a talk about the New Space Race.

August Holiday Club This year we ran the Holiday Club again on Wednesday after-noons in August. Thanks to Irene Gordon for organising the sessions and also to all our members who took part in the ses-sions. Everyone seemed to have enjoyed themselves. We hope to repeat the club again next year in August.

New Interest Groups Although we have over 60 groups in West Bridgford U3A and in this past year we have created four or five new groups we are always interested in new ideas for creating new groups. Joe Colls have taken over the role of new groups co-ordinator from me. If any of you have ideas of forming a group or are interest-ed in one and don’t know how to go about it, then please con-tact Joe. His contact details are at the back of this newsletter.

LINCOLN CASTLE AND GAINSBOROUGH OLD HALL VISIT

The History Group enjoyed an interesting day out in sunshine. Our time in Lincoln was spent looking around the Castle, in par-ticular the grim prison cells. There was also an exhibition of Vivienne Westwood's spectacular shoes and clothing. We had the option to walk along the walls...or not! There was time to see the Cathedral and narrow ancient streets of Steep Hill.

Then on to Gainsborough Old Hall where a costumed guide told us the history of this wonderful old building. The grounds out-side here contained a number of the original plantings—the Mulberry trees with their fruit which oozed brilliant red juice. A lovely outing arranged by Carol and enjoyed by all. Put out to Pasture

As you will have gathered from my ramblings in the last edition I am no longer a resident of West Bridgford. So Lord Copper has suggested it’s about time I stepped down as editor. (Lord Copper? - See Eve-lyn Waugh’s Scoop – arguably the funniest book ever written about journalism). But seriously we are now looking for some-one to step up and take over editing the WBU3A Newsletter.

It’s really quite undemanding work– otherwise they wouldn’t have let a daft old fool like me take it on! Thanks to Spell-checker, you don’t even need basic English skills.

It’s an interesting job, and doesn’t take up a great deal of time. You just have to encourage the contributors who do the hard work for you. If you like writing and editing, and tinkering with page layouts, it’s great fun. And with the wonders of technolo-gy you don’t even have to set foot outside your door to get the whole thing printed posted and webinatorised. (Plus you can make up your own words– and nobody can stop you!).

You need a laptop or PC running on Windows 10. The commit-tee can loan you one if yours isn’t up to date. (If yours prints f instead of s then you need an update!). If you are familiar with web browsing, Word and e mail, and know roughly how to store files and edit photos you will be fine. We use a pre– set template in Publisher (paid for by the committee) with all the print layouts , which we just clear and re– use for each edition.

I will be happy to give my successor as much support and guid-ance as you may need in taking over the role. So if you think you might like to have a go, do please drop me a line.

Thanks to those of you who have already elected to Go Paper-less and help our planet. The rest of you can Go Paperless now - see page 19. As I write this our grandchildren are marching on the streets demanding effective action to halt an unfolding global climate catastrophe– we owe it to them to do our bit.

And thanks to those of you who have sent me encouraging words from time to time. I’ve enjoyed being your editor.

IT’S A FAIR COP!

The long arm of the law reached out to WBU3A this summer. Two officers from Notts Constabulary attended the August Holiday Club. We are assured however that no collars were felt. The officers gave useful advice on personal protection, and received a warm welcome as pictured above. Ed

MOVE ‘EM ON UP, HEAD ‘EM ON OUT, RAWHIDE!

Is this a new sport? Cow waving? No, apparently it’s just the sort of thing they get up to on Friday Walks. See report below. Ed

Leaving Sutton Bonington our group headed off over the railway and along fields past the University, through the village then alongside the River Soar. Our coffee break

was well worth the wait when we got to the lock Finally we headed back into the village over fields. Patrick encouraged the cows to move out of the way so we could pass through a gate. Then an excellent lunch at the King’s Head. Thanks to those who have organise walks for us. Clare Deeming

TWO HILLS AND TWO KINGS

The Orienteering Walkers recently climbed two local hills, marking major events in British history. Richard III met his end at the Bat-tle of Bosworth Field in 1485. His remains were found 527 years later under a car park in Leicester. In 1985 new battles erupted, the Min-ers’ Strike dividing communities in the East Midlands. Now “King Coal” is no more. At Silverhill Wood at the top of its 670 ft. summit stands a statue of a solitary miner—a me-morial to past labours. John Pickles

THOSE WERE THE DAYS

The first of the August Holiday Club sessions was devoted to food - war time rations v 21st century treats. Although I’m sure we were all too young to actually remember buying food on rations, we were all aware of the scarceness of things we take for granted today. To see some of the portions made us realise how difficult it must have been – the weekly allowance of cheese would have been a mid-morning snack nowadays.

Linda (our guest presenter and WI member) told us that during the 1st World War men volunteering were in such a bad state of health due to starvation. The unfair rationing of those days caused rioting in the street. With World War II the new ration-ing ensured that everyone had an adequate balanced diet. Treats, like Spam, came along later with the Americans!

To show that you CAN bake a light sponge cake without using eggs, Linda did exactly that, aided and abetted by her galley slave, Irene, who was confined to the kitchen. Although not quite as light as the modern recipe, the lovely freshly baked sponge was lovely, as we all had a chance to sample it.

Linda then moved on to the present day, and demonstrated a very quick and easy recipe for an Apple Roulade (a Swiss roll filled with stewed apple and dried fruit, to you and me!). The whole exercise took about a 1/2 hour from peeling the apples to sprinkling the top of the roulade with sugar.

During our midway break we had a chance to sample some sausage rolls made without fat. Butter and margarine were ra-tioned, but it was possible to make pastry using potato! We all enjoyed an interesting and informative afternoon.
