The Green Doctor team spend time visiting people in their own homes to help them with all sorts of energy related problems. Some people just want to talk to someone independent about energy switching, others might want help keeping warm, some people want help because they feel their energy company isn’t treating them fairly and others still have energy debt. In partnership with Otley Town Council we are now able to offer a wider service in Otley through the new Otley Energy Savers scheme. That means that we may be able to help you save money on your energy bills and feel warmer in your home. The Green Doctor recently visited the Town Mayor of Otley, Cllr Mary Vickers, to see if she was paying too much for her energy… she was. Using billing information we found the Town Mayor a large number of alternative suppliers. After talking through the options, the Town Mayor was able to switch to a company that seemed to offer a good standard of customer service as well as a saving of around £300 per year on her duel fuel energy bill. As well as helping people find better deals we also carry out some basic energy saving measures. These include supplying modern LED light bulbs, replacing non-energy efficient bulbs with these free of charge. Unlike the old “energy saving bulbs” LEDs light up instantly and last up to 30 years. We can also fit reflective panels behind radiators to reduce heat loss through the walls of the house. Old wooden front doors that let in a draught we can draught proof. And among other measures we can fit bottom door brushes. We’ll even make sure you’re not paying too much on your water bill. As well as energy advice and basic technical measures we are connected to other organisations that can offer other services. Such as, boiler replacements with government ECO funding and heating servicing and repairs. Over time our team of dedicated energy advisors have encountered almost every problem it’s possible to have with an energy company. One lady we went to see recently was fighting her energy company, who had accused her of trying to defraud them. She was being accused of submitting false meter readings to lower her bill. The Green Doctor looked into the case and found out that her energy company’s own meter reader had started reading someone else’s meter instead of hers. The Green Doctor quickly made sure this was corrected. The 2nd Otley (Methodist) Guides did ourbit to keep Otley tidy recently, when weundertook a litter pick in WharfemeadowsPark.

The girls were completing the 'LitterLotto' activity from a taster pack fromthe new Girlguiding programme thatlaunched this summer. The girls took avote on which part of Otley they wouldlike to tidy up and Wharfemeadows waschosen due to it being a place that all the Guides like to visit.

Otley Town Council kindly supplied bags, hoops, hi-vis jackets and litter grabbers forus to use and these were put to very good use, with one Patrol collecting well over200 pieces of litter! A 'good turn' well done.

We are always on the lookout for new leaders to help run our group and deliver greatGuiding. If you would like to know more, please send an enquiry towww.girlguiding.org.uk/get-involved/become-a-volunteer/

Everyone can benefit from mindfulness. Weall face pressures and stresses and can getstuck in our personal reactions. The thingsthat stress and challenge us may not change, but the way in which we deal with them canshift, making it all feel easier. Reportedbenefits include a greater capacity forrelaxation and calmness; less worry, anxietyand depression; enhanced resilience; improvedself-confidence; and better sleep quality.

Public concern regarding single-usedisposable items, especially plastics,is on the increase and the Govern-ment is currently considering severalproposals, including a ‘latte levy’ todiscourage the use of disposablecups and reduce plastic waste.

Disposable coffee cups are made from paper with a plastic liner and aredifficult to recycle. Indeed, according to the parliamentary EnvironmentalAudit Committee, the UK is throwing away 2.5 billion disposable coffeecups per year, with only a small number being recycled.

In response, some large retailers have announced plans to remove all dis-posable coffee cups from their shops, as part of efforts to reduce plasticsand packaging. And Otley Town Council has launched its own schemeto help tackle disposable coffee cup waste. The My Otley Cup is madefrom reusable bamboo and sports the My Otley Cup logo.

These re-useable cups are available in a range of colours, size and designsto purchase from the Town Council’s offices in Orchard Gate, costing £6,£6.50 and £7.

I have chosen two charities this year. Behind Closed Doorsis an organisation that help support domestic abuse vic-tims; and, Otley Parish Scouts at Burras Lane who needhelp improving their meeting hall.

It's fair to say that Thomas Chippendale has been mymain focus this season... and rightly so! My poem,'Thomas Carved Our Town', commissioned by OtleyTown Council celebrating Otley's most famous son's300th birthday, has appeared on many platforms. The most high profile has to be BBC Radio 4's FrontRow programme on April 24th, featuring myself,competition-winning bellman Terry Ford and VisitOtley’s Lawrence Ross. Reading the poem anddiscussing poetry and carpentry for the show was ahighlight and great promotion for the town.

In addition to this, I have appeared on BBC RadioLeeds twice throughout spring, again reading thepoem and explaining the duties of being the UK's onlyofficial Town Poet. Also, both the Yorkshire Reporterand Wharfedale Observer newspapers published'Thomas Carved Our Town', which I was extremelypleased about because one of my aims as a poet is toengage readers that might not normally seek out poetry.

Lastly, the National Trust's Nostell Priory has kindlyasked me to take part in two of their Nostell Nightsevents. The first was May 4th and was undoubtedlyone of the grandest venues I've ever read at. I readtwo sets of poems on two themes (Otley and Poetryversus Carpentry) over four readings. The feedbackwas amazing and most of the people in attendancewere inspired to visit Otley to check the validity ofmy verse! My next visit to Nostell was 13th Julywhere I performed an interactive poetry-play based onthe Chippendale pieces at the Priory, specificallycommissioned by the National Trust.

A few other engagements, closer to home, haveincluded the Otley Town AGM on May 14th - this timeI didn't subject the attendees to a game of 'poetrybingo', Otley's Great Get Together on June 17th,where I created a haiku at the Festival Sticker Art tent, and the Town Mayor's Civic Lunch on June 24th.

I am very much looking forward to judging the TownCrier Competition on September 23rd alongsidebellman Terry Ford, and I'm sure there will be moreprojects in the pipeline.
