Editors Letter….

The holidays should be just about over,

however there is still plenty to do in

and around Hatfield.

Race week is coming up, time to get

your glad rags on and enjoy a day or

two at the St Leger.

Ladies, if you‟re looking for somewhere

to have your nails done, or treat

yourself to some special Beauty

Treatments or pampering, you‟ll find

details inside this months issue.

The „Kids Page‟ this month was created

by my niece, Chelsea Morrell who is a

pupil at Hatfield Visual Arts College.

Chelsea worked with me on a trident

and I would like to thank her for all the

hard work she did over the two weeks

she was here.

The deadline for the October issue is

Wednesday 15th September. Please

forward any news, event details,

articles or adverts.

Travis School - Year 2’s next adventure! At the end of the summer term, our Year 2 children left Travis school and embarked upon a move

to their next school. It has been a pleasure to have been a part of their lives throughout their time

at Hatfield Travis and we hope that they will continue with recording and reporting their

experiences. At the end of the term, our last assignment for the Year 2 reporters was for them to

record their memories about their time at Hatfield Travis, their prayers and also their hopes for

their next school. In their leavers‟ service, many of the children were brave enough to share some

of these feelings with the audience.

Danielle remembered that in Year 1 we went to the Cusworth Museum. We learnt about how

toilets flushed in the past and also about the different toys people used to play with. I liked the

marbles toy.

Maia said “My favourite memory about Travis is when we went to Filey and we went rock pooling,

built a sand castle and walked on the promenade. I had an ice-cream which was delicious”.

Olivia‟s contribution was “I liked the Christmas Nativity because my favourite song was „Mary had a

baby‟. I was in the choir in the Nativity and we sang „Love shone down‟”.

Kimberley‟s memories were “I really enjoyed skills workshop especially gardening and baking. In

gardening we have been planting seeds and we also planted a few carrots and onions. We have also

planted some potatoes and tomatoes. The potatoes have been harvested and we have eaten them.

They were delicious”. Jessica said “I have enjoyed learning about India this year especially the work on Indian dance. I liked

the music and the clothes”.

Thomas wrote “In our „honey‟ concert I liked it when the drones went to sleep because Grumble

wanted to be a drone. I also liked the drone song”.

Eva remarked “I liked that I have met thousands of friends at Hatfield Travis School and that I had

lots of fun with them. Hatfield Travis School is a fun place to be because lots of people follow the

golden rules and be friends with others. I had a wonderful time at school because people were kind

to me”.

Arona said “I am looking forward to Manor because I want to learn about dinosaurs and reptiles”.

These are Chloe‟s thoughts - “When I go to my new school I am looking forward to playing with

some of my new friends. When I go to my new school I hope that all my friends will be nice to me”.

Alex W created a wonderful prayer - Dear God. You are my spirit because you made me. Thank

you God for the world because the world is beautiful. Please God make it fun at Manor. Amen.

We hope our year 2 children will continue to flourish in their next adventure and will come back

from time to time to keep us up to date with their achievements. Thank you Year 2s.

NORTH EAST DONCASTER CITIZENS

ADVICE BUREAU

There seem to be so many things that could potentially

affect my holiday this summer – whether they be airline

strikes or freak weather conditions. What are my rights if my flight gets

delayed or cancelled? The existing legislation applies to all flights departing from or flying to a European Union airport via an EU

airline.

If your flight is cancelled or changed within 14 days of your journey, for reasons other than „extraordinary

circumstances‟ (see below), then you have the right to a refund or alternative transportation, as well as

compensation. You can claim up to €600 depending on the notice of cancellation, your flight distance and

how much delay you suffer. Since November 2009 you could also be entitled to compensation, as well as

meals, drinks, two phone calls (or emails, faxes etc) and accommodation if necessary, if your flight is

delayed.

If your flight is delayed or cancelled due to „extraordinary circumstances‟ such as extreme weather, strikes

or security risks, you won‟t be entitled to compensation. The airline should book you onto the next

available flight, or offer a refund if your flight is delayed by more than 5 hours, but only if you decide not

to travel. You may be entitled to receive catering, communication and accommodation assistance if your

flight is delayed for a number of hours or eventually cancelled.

If you are on a package holiday, the travel company must follow arrangements set out in the travel

brochure to cover delays. If they don‟t, you may be able to claim a refund and/or compensation.

The Civil Aviation Authority website offers more info at: www.caa.co.uk. If you believe you are entitled

to compensation but the airline or tour operator denies responsibility you should see an experienced

adviser.

If you require any advice/assistance from our Thorne or Stainforth offices, concerning the

above or any other issue, please contact our Assessment Team at North East Doncaster

Citizens Advice Bureau on 0844 499 4137 Mon-Fri between 10:00 & 2:00. Or email:

[email protected] Contact details and opening times are also available on our website at:

www.northeastdoncastercab.org.uk If you have a Welfare Benefits enquiry/problem, we now also operate an appointments-only

session at The Winning Post, Moorends every Tuesday. To make an appointment please ring

01405 740641.

We currently have a new self-help information kiosk at our Thorne bureau that can be used

by anyone during opening hours.

Do you know someone special? Someone who has gone the extra mile for others or someone who just deserves

something nice. The Arrow and Charlottes Florist of Hatfield would like to make that

special persons day with a beautiful bouquet delivered to their door! Let us know who

they are and why they deserve a bouquet. Contact Julie Morrell by email at

[email protected] or call 01302 770216.

Derek Garrett would like to nominate Margaret Newcome for the monthly

„Flowers for Someone Special. He says Margaret has been helping at the Hatfield

woodhouse Chapel coffee mornings for over ten years, she never misses a Saturday and

now knows what everyone has. She is very hard working and we could not run the coffee

mornings without the help she gives us. She rarely says “no” to anyone.

She richly deserves a vote of thanks and a treat. I don‟t know what we‟d do without her.

Listen to Trax FM for ‘Someone Special’ in the morning.

25% OFF NEUTERING

To take advantage of this money

saving offer please contact the surgery.

Please present this advert when you bring

01405 812142 2 White Lane, Thorne, DN8 5UJ

*Not to be used in conjunction with any

other offer.

WHY NEUTER? There are many reasons why you should

consider neutering your pet. In the UK today

there is a feline over population crisis, with not

enough homes to go round for the thousands

of unwanted cats and kittens, unfortunately this

sad fact is also true for dogs and rabbits. The

only humane answer to the problem is to

neuter animals thus preventing additional

unwanted litters.

WHATS INVOLVED? Neutering is the term used to describe either

spaying or castration, a routine operation

carried out under general anaesthetic:

From now until the end of August we are offering

a 25% discount* on routine neutering.

Prevents females from coming into season

and becoming pregnant.

Helps combat urine marking, roaming and

dominance in males.

Reduces the risk of mammary, uterine and

testicular cancers.

These benefits apply not only to cats and dogs

but also to rabbits. Male rabbits have the same

drawbacks as tom cats if they are not castrated,

most are territorial, frequently spraying urine

and show aggressive tendencies. Neutering

female rabbits is even more important. From

sexual maturity (4-6mths) most females become

territorial and aggressive, often attacking other

rabbits they also have repeated false pregnancies

and may growl, scratch and bite their owners.

The Evolution staff have during 2010,

already carried out over 600 routine

neutering operations and are keen to

encourage more owners to consider these

beneficial procedures for their pets.

Spaying involves the removal of the uterus

and ovaries preventing the female from

becoming pregnant.

Castration refers to the removal of the

testicles making it impossible for the male

to reproduce.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

There have been lots of new

developments at Small World Day

Nursery which include a new Information

Technology suite and a magical „Wonky‟

house.

The IT suite consists of learning

programmes designed for children which

work through an interactive touch screen.

This makes the whole learning journey

much more interesting and enjoyable and

gives the children a taste of what they will

be using at school.

However the wonky house wins the award

for most popular addition to the nursery.

It is designed to look like something out of

a fairy tale with no part of it symmetrical

and the children love to play in it!

What is Pets Home and Away?

We are a young and exciting local family business committed to providing the best possi-

ble services for the pets in our care; for your pet. Owned and run by Barry Davenport, a

former Doncaster teacher, the family has cared for cats and dogs as pets for many years.

As a family of full time workers, (Liz, Barry‟s wife, is still a part time teacher) it was impor-

tant for us to find reliable people to check on our pets during the day. We were lucky

with friends and family for the most part but going on holiday could be a real problem.

We used the usual services out there, but the dogs often returned with kennel cough and

a general grumpiness at being left. The cats refused to speak to us for days after their re-

turn! So we understand how important it is for you to know that there is a service to care

for, exercise and look after your pet in a safe, loving environment, whenever you need it.

In short, a pet home from home.

So we set about looking for people who would care for our animals in their homes. It

worked! Our dogs loved going to their host‟s house for their holiday and the cats were

happy to see the regular visitor who came into our own home to care for them.

We went on holiday happy in the knowledge that on our return our pets would be happy

and in tip-top condition. And if it worked for us why not for YOU? Pets Home and Away

was born.

So if you‟re out of town for work or holiday, recovering from illness or having a special

weekend away such as a family wedding, we have a service to suit you.

You can choose to send your canine companion into a host‟s secure and vetted home or

have all your pets cared for in their own familiar surroundings thus maintaining all home

routines and home security. Pet and house sitters are CRB checked.

We are members of The National Association of Registered Petsitters with access to a

fully qualified veterinary nurse 24 hours a

day. For our customers‟ peace of mind, we

are fully insured.

The Blind Leading the Blind Every so often I get asked why I have never married or why I seem to be very choosy about the type of

women I find attractive. Some people find it quite odd that a 42-year-old bloke should live in a barn next

door to his parents. Or that his best friend is a dog called Benjamin Mole. Maybe even the fact his mum

still irons his work shirts and the highlight of his week is a three-pub crawl on a Saturday followed by a

Chinese takeaway. Really, what‟s odd about that?

I know blokes who would give up marriage to be able to watch Match of the Day sat in their undies and

not have to worry about the washing up until Sunday afternoon. Just the other day, as I gave my car its

annual clean, I discovered a half eaten ASDA ham and cheese sandwich under the passenger seat with a

sell by date of 04.07.2008. Maybe that‟s the real reason I am single (the freedom, not the sandwich).

Anyway, this got me thinking of my one and only foray into the world of “blind dating” way back in 2003.

It has left me scarred for life. A University mate (we‟ll call him Vinny, as that is his name) had set himself

the goal of getting me fixed up and cracking the conundrum of why I was so crap with the fairer sex. One

evening I received a call explaining he had found me the perfect match and after he had waxed lyrical

about my plus points, she admitted she wasn‟t after a „good looker‟, just someone with a nice personality.

He proceeded to give me a lad‟s version of Jane, my would-be suitor, basically claiming she was “a

cracker” and that this was the chance of a lifetime. I was intrigued and gladly took her number,

determined to make a go of it. I followed the „two-day rule‟ (you lads will know what this is) and gave Jane

a call.

She sounded nice. An hour went by as we discussed everything from pop music to boiled sweets and I

finished by asking if she would like to meet up. If there was a pause in her voice I never noticed, which I

took as a good sign, and she countered by suggesting we head to Stockport Megabowl the following

weekend. The week flew by and soon I was waiting nervously outside Stockport‟s premier bowling

establishment, worried that Vinny may have played a cruel hoax on me and that I was quite possibly being

covertly filmed as a cross between an East German shot-putter and a bulldog chewing a wasp came to

bundle me into the back of a van.

Two 'o'clock came and went, so did 2.05, 10, and 2.15. Not good, where was she? Another 10 minutes

passed and we‟d soon hit half two. I stood feeling like a lemon and deciding that the best way to inflict pain

on Vincenzo when I was approached by the most gorgeous creation I had ever seen – well at least since

the West Ham away strip of 1986, the one with the purple splash over the sleeves. Jane held out a

delicately manicured hand and introduced herself. My oh my, heaven must be missing an angel, she was a

cross between Kelly Brook and Natalie Imbruglia, she was a stunner.

I regained my composure surprisingly quickly as we headed inside and Jane explained that she had always

wanted to go bowling. We unpicked the laces of our unsightly bowling shoes and found ourselves a quiet

lane neighbouring another young couple, seemingly also on a date. We chatted casually as you do, minding

our Ps and Qs but she seemed chatty and nice and above all else drop dead gorgeous! Vinny had really

come through.

I agreed to go first and tried my best to impress, not only by knocking down as many pins as possible in an

alpha male style but by trying to maintain a pertness of the bum as I ambled down the bowling lane.

Jane shuffled forwards and followed, picking up her ball and delivering an effort that would have made Sir

Barnes Wallis grimace – bouncing four times before leaping into the next bowling lane and disappearing

down the back like a rat down a hole.

I gave her a sympathetic nod and offered as much moral support as I could muster over the next three

bouncers. Jane shrugged slightly and countered that everything would be ok after a while and as long as

the woman from the next alley stopped staring, she‟d find her composure. Upon Jane‟s fifth attempt,

which in truth was worse than her first, we began to attract the attention of the centre supervisors – who

were starting to worry about damage - and most of the other bowlers nearby. With the scores now of no

relevance whatsoever it was clear Jane was getting more and more agitated by the young girl next door,

culminating in the following statement: “If you stare at me and my hand one more time, I will come over

there and ram this bowling ball where the sun doesn‟t shine love!”

“Oh dear,” I thought. It was at this point I noticed the reason behind Jane‟s anger. She only had

three fingers on one hand, which just happened to be her bowling hand. You have to admire the

girl‟s pluck and determination but I was confused as to her choice of first date given her difficulty in

Page 29: September 10, Issue 57, The Hatfield Arrow

actually holding any of the balls. I continued to encourage my date as you‟d expect, trying to hone

her bowling technique, but even I admitted defeat when, as quick as a flash, Jane flew over to the

neighbouring lane and proceeded to give the watching girl a couple of strikes of her own. My date

had turned into a wrestling match with hair and blood everywhere as the two women screamed at

each other like wailing banshees.

After what seemed like an age I made a strategic decision to depart so we could have a drink and

maybe find out more about each other – like how long Jane had been a member of Fight Club. She

threw a final cursory glance over her shoulder as we left and proceeded to explain that she had one

or two anger issues she needed to address but that she was making progress. After an awkward 15-

minute search I located a nice bar in a bid to salvage something from the meeting. I offered Jane her

drink, sat down next to her and began musing about what to say to break the ice and move things

forward. I didn‟t want to rouse her demonic streak as this had already resulted in a warning from

the Megabowl management and a lifetime ban. Jane, however, beat me to the punch (not for the first

time that afternoon) and with her opening gambit blurted out: “Pete, do you want kids?”

„No harm in that‟ I thought, giving her the benefit of the doubt and admitting I hadn‟t really thought

about it yet. Jane had, and was, going on to explain she was desperate to join motherhood and get

herself in the family way as quickly as possible. Given her boyfriend was in prison on a five-year

stretch for armed robbery, she wondered whether I‟d be interested in filling in for him while he was

busy at Her Majesty‟s pleasure? I vaguely remember mumbling something about my parents, a charity

ploughing match and visiting hours before departing… I couldn‟t get home quickly enough. Vinny called not long after I got home and, when pressed, explained that while he was aware of “a

few issues”, but she did have very nice knockers. And so with this in mind I have always aimed to

use the path well trodden rather than take another risk or find myself on another a blind date from

hell. And who knows, maybe there‟s a lady out there for me somewhere, and she might even love

Match of the Day too…. PW AKA The Difference

Hatfield Woodhouse Primary News

Official Town Twinning with Merksplas,

Belgium Benefits our School!

I am delighted to inform you that Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School has been awarded the

Intermediate Level International School Status for our work here in making the children

more aware of other cultures and countries.

As part of this work years 5 and 6 have been emailing two schools in Belgium. Qworzo is a county

primary school and Vrje Basisschool is a church school in the town of Merksplas, Belgium. Just

before the summer holidays the children of Hatfield Woodhouse prepared some Friendship Boxes

for the children there and recently I was fortunate enough to go with the Hatfield Twinning

Committee to present these boxes to their teachers at the official town twinning on August 14th.

Eight members of the twinning committee travelled (at their own expense) to be warmly welcomed

by the Merksplas community along with delegates from Poland, Germany and the Netherlands –

with whom the town of Merksplas is already linked. It was a humbling experience to stay with the

Belgian families in a town which was so clean and tidy – I saw no litter or graffiti anywhere! Every

effort had been made to make us feel at home – all the community spoke to us in English and their

hospitality was second to none, all meals were prepared for us and trips out to historic sites

organised .

The Merksplas people are tremendously proud of their history. Despite being a cycle ride away

from the centre of the community a memorial to Corporal Harper ( a Woodhouse young man

who liberated the town from the Germans in World War 2) is maintained and polished by pupils

from the VRJB school, whilst a sculpture made from the tail end of a WW2 plane is maintained by

pupils of Qworzo School. There is much competition for these prestigious maintenance roles

within the schools and as such, respect for locality and its features, is fostered in the very young.

The ceremony for the official

town twinning saw each of the

4 mayors present, including our

own

Mr. Terry Gibbs, speak on the

benefits of town twinning.

Town twinning is an initiative of

peace, learning from each

other and friendship. We

heard of the benefits-in-action

from the mayor of Grodzisk, a

Polish town twinned with

Merksplas for 20 years and

from the Belgian and German Burgemeesters.

In between the speeches the head-teacher of the local school

and his wife sang of friendship and peace. I was very moved

when the last song was „Somewhere‟ the song written by John

Parr (of St Elmo‟s Fire fame) and Pete Reeves, deputy head of

HVAC and recorded by the pupils of HVAC. The children of

Hatfield Woodhouse had used this song as backing music on a

Powerpoint presentation sent to Qworzo School and Keon,

the head-teacher of Vrje School had taken the words, found

the chords and performed it with his wife in celebration of

working together with us.

Afterwards I was delighted when Koen suggested

showing me round his school. An earlier visit by

Merksplas councillors/school governors to Sheep Dip

Lane Primary had given Merksplas the idea of installing

interactive whiteboards in each class. Equally, I came

away from Vrje Basisschool, Merksplas School with many ideas to share with the heads of the Hatfield

Schools and to try at Hatfield Woodhouse School. I can

see real benefits of the twinning for the children of

Hatfield already.

The twinning group also hope to develop links

with sporting groups in each country and cultural

groups- e.g. the town bands / dance schools. Are

you a member of a group who would like to make

links with your counterpart in Merksplas?

After the weekend visit I feel blessed to have

made many new friends, learnt a great deal about

other cultures and have collected email addresses

to make further links with Polish and German

schools.

A great start for the new term!

Dear readers,

The government has made the standard Driving Test more difficult in recent years, with the addition of a

multiple-choice test and a computerised hazard-awareness assessment.

However it still only involves learning the most fundamental driving skills and doesn‟t include preparation

for poor-weather or motorway driving. The standard L-test is simply an introduction to driving a vehicle.

Your further education takes place on today‟s congested roads and provides a steep and often precarious

learning curve, this is where Driver education comes in.

On the U/K‟s congested roads it‟s important that you‟re always in the right frame of mind to drive. A

positive attitude will help to reduce the risk of collisions through tolerance and courtesy, by being realistic

as to your own abilities, and by maintaining a high degree of care for your own safety and others.

Driving on UK roads can be very stressful, but you must always remain cool-headed tolerant and

courteous–helping to avoid or diffuse any threatening situations. Don‟t let your driving standards be

affected by other motorist‟s mistakes or behaviour. Stay relaxed, don‟t be provoked and remember that, if

you do make a mistake an apologetic wave is often all it takes to put things right.

Don‟t let your enthusiasm for driving tempt you into breaking the speed limit or driving dangerously

always know what speed you are doing and know what the maximum speed limit is. Remember timid

drivers can be as dangerous as aggressive drivers.

Always expect the worst from other motorists and try to understand what they are aiming to achieve. If

you allow for poor observation and slow reactions, you‟ll find you‟re always prepared for the worst-case

scenario.

Whether you‟re a novice motorist or an experienced driver, you‟ll always find room to improve your

driving skills. Keep an open mind, be realistic about your limitations and always be prepared to learn from

any errors you make.

When following other drivers, always apply the two-second rule if you suspect they may not be totally

focused on their driving, leave an even bigger gap to give you extra braking time. Tailgating is a common

cause of collisions, it is dangerous and antisocial and can never be condoned.

1.The Driving Position.

One of the most important aspects of driving a modern machine involves achieving the perfect driving

position every time you get behind the wheel. This allows you maximum control over your vehicle and

will keep you more comfortable and alert on longer journey‟s It‟s also the position most often adopted by

racing drivers, especially rally and touring car drivers.

Sit in the car with the base of your spine in the back of the seat to prevent back problems.

Hold the wheel at ten-to-two or quarter-to-three. Keep your thumbs vertical.

Whenever possible adjust the steering wheel rake for improved control and to enable you to see all the

dashboard instruments.

Make sure your arms are slightly bent.

Your legs should be slightly bent too when your feet are on the pedals.

The back of the seat should be fairly upright giving you a good view of the road ahead, mirrors, display and

dials.

Ensure that head restraints are adjusted so that they align with the top of you head. If you are interested in further information regarding the courses that we offer, you‟ll be able to find

this information on the Institute of Advanced Motorists website at www.iam.org.uk or Tel: 020 8996
