Do you know Somebody who Deserves an Award? Betty Bateson, from Hatfield, couldn‟t believe her eyes

when a letter from Buckingham Palace arrived on her

doorstep asking her to accept the prestigious MBE

award.

Unknown to Betty at the time, over 2 years ago a

friend of hers had posted the nomination form. This

was then followed by six more forms sent in by people

who know Betty and the amazing work she has done

over the past 40 years throughout Hatfield and

Doncaster.

Betty started volunteer work at the playgroup her

children attended, she went on to be a member of the

Parents and Teachers Associations at her children‟s

schools, Parent Governor and volunteered at the local youth club.

She then went on to manage the Stainforth Citizens Advice Bureau, where she helped

hundreds of families during the miners strike. Betty was the first Chairman of Homestart,

provided valuable volunteer work for the Samaritans, and more locally has been a member

of The Friends of Hatfield Church Building Trust for over 12 years.

At present Betty is Secretary for Doncaster REMAP, who design and make much needed

equipment for people with disabilities and works with a sub group of the Hatfield PCC

which has been established to raise funds to replace The Barn in Hatfield with a new

environmentally sustainable building.

On 23rd November 2009 Betty travelled to London accompanied by her proud husband

and two daughters. They stayed overnight in a hotel close to Buckingham Palace and the

next morning, on the 24th November 2009, they attended the awards ceremony. The

award was presented by Princess Anne, who spoke to Betty and asked her about the

fundraising and volunteer work she has done for organisations in Hatfield and Doncaster.

Betty feels honoured to have been nominated and awarded the MBE.

She also feels that there are other people in the area who would greatly deserve a Royal

honour and that if you know of any such person, you should take the time to send a

nomination form and show them how much they are valued and appreciated.

Same Old Sweet Potato Pie……………. A few weeks ago I admit I wasn't exactly firing on all cylinders after a tough few months at work.

Definitely more Reliant Robin than Bentley if you know what I mean. So it was a very pleasant

surprise when an old school buddy got in touch with my via “t'intenet” and invited me to go along

and watch the latest production by the Woodhouse Players - Oklahoma. It was an offer I couldn‟t

refuse having given a performance worthy of Rodgers and Hammerstein themselves in stealing the

show for three nights in the role of 'Slim' in 1983. Although I only had four lines in the whole

production, I gained a diploma in “jazz hands” and mimed like Cheryl Cole (allegedly) through the

chorus as I was tone deaf. Anyway, off I popped one Thursday night to find a front row ticket

waiting for me courtesy of my friend Hilary. It was a proud moment, it was my first-ever freebie, if

you don‟t count getting two-for-one on Radox at Tesco.

I have to say for the record that there is a real star within the

cast at Woodhouse Players. Step forward Mr Johnny Whitely

(pictured). I used to watch Johnny play for Hatfield Woodhouse

Football Club as a young lad in his customary centre forward

position. Ironically, many watchers back then would compliment

John on his amateur dramatics, especially when in range of the

opposition 18-yard box, often finding himself a victim of the infamous “Woodhouse Sniper”. John played the lead role of

Curly in the production and was worth the entry fee (if I had

paid one) alone. His mate Neil McParland was also in the

audience that night which was a bit of a surprise as he would,

back in 1985, have happily chinned anyone who squealed at him

- as he pulled them up by their armpit hair - that he would be a

21st Century musical watcher. I don‟t want to wax lyrical about

one member of a superb cast and crew but just like Hollywood,

every show must have a star. If any young bloke is mulling over

joining an amateur dramatic society they would be hard pushed

to find a better role model that John. The man managed to

maintain a subtle blend of street cool, humour and karaoke

legend despite the knowledge that he has to wear make up a few times each year and occasionally

must strut his stuff in front of 300 people or so.

As I sat in the High School Hall (will I get into trouble for not calling it a Visual Arts College?) I

marvelled at the tenacity of Hatfield folk with their broad Yorkshire accents, trying to sound like

they had just stepped off the Oklahoma Pony Express. “Good day Y' all - Na then Curly, has thee

been up to Ma‟s house to see if that Judd has run off wi th'orses?” But there really is only one word

for the whole show - FABULOUS! I loved it. If this production had been slicker than a Brylcream

finish it would have lost all its provincial innocence. And frankly, I would have asked for my money

back had the same bucket and stool not appeared in five separate scenes. Over the years I have built

up a huge respect for those willing to put the effort into such things. A friend of mine at University

once said to me, as we tried desperately to flog 500 Football Club Christmas ball tickets, “Peter,

there are doers and there are talkers in this world”. So I take this opportunity to publicly applaud

the doers. The cast, the band and the backroom staff who made not just me happy but another 500

people over a four-day run and gave it their all regardless of the fact that some of the scenery shook

like the top of the Emley Moor mast in December.

If you get the chance you should go and see the next production by the Woodhouse Players. If you

go with the right attitude and marvel at the ingenuity and endeavour of the group then I have no

Page 9: Apr 10, Issue 52, The Hatfield Arrow

doubt you'll have a ball. Thanks to Hilary for giving me the push I needed to attend, I sincerely owe

you a favour in return. It was just what I needed to remind me of the dreams of a 15-year-old who

thought life as the next John Travolta would lead to chicks, the red carpet and 'Peter Wright'

adorning Hollywood Boulevard. Somewhere between Cher and James Dean perhaps? (Where did it

all go wrong Peter?) And as for Johnny Whitely, I am pretty sure he would like nothing more than to

see a young upstart come to take his centre stage, just like a young Gareth Mesham did at

Woodhouse Football Club.

Keep entertaining people Woodhouse Players and the same to those among you also treading the

boards in other amateur dramatic societies around Hatfield. And one day, if any of you are feeling

brave enough to do Bugsy Malone, I definitely see myself as a “reet good” Dandy Dan! "Na then

Bugsy me old lad, wehz tha think tha's gooin' wi tha splurge gun?”

Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School News!

Happy Easter!

There‟s been a lot of exciting things going on in our school this month. Our Key Stage One children

performed a delightful Mother‟s Day assembly.

The FS1 children sang a song called „Mummy loves me‟, then after that great song the FS2 children

showed the parents a videoed presentation of what they love about their mums. It made the parents

watching it laugh aloud.

Year 1 re-enacted a story called „MY MUM‟ by Antony Browne, which was funny too. Year 2 taught

their mums about the history of Mother‟s Day.

Did you know that Mother‟s Day started as a holiday for young servants who lived in big houses –

often the only day a year when they could go home to see their families?

Some of our students went to Doncaster College recently to take part in a Children‟s University

Camera Club. They had two wonderful teachers Rosilyn and Helen. Their favourite part was

transferring the photos of our school and Doncaster college to a disc and making the slide show

which we showed on our new big screen in the hall.

On March 4th we celebrated World Book Day by all dressing up as book characters. The teachers all

swopped classes to read stories to different classes and we managed to raise over £800 at our

Scholastic Bookfair. It made us realise how much fun we can have from books!

March 4th was also Family Day at our Breakfast Club. The children who attend invited their family

members for a wonderful morning both sharing breakfast and having fun playing Bingo together.

We are currently looking forward to the opening of our new school entrance. It has taken the work

of so many people to make it happen and the whole school would like to thank them for working so

hard. We hope to have an official opening soon and maybe invite a guest to cut a ribbon across the

entrance! Watch out for the photograph next month.

Oklahoma There‟s no business like show business and

there is no „Am-Dram‟ group like the

fantastic Hatfield Woodhouse Players whose

production of Oklahoma ran from 17th to

20th February at Hatfield Visual Arts College.

Proving that they still have what it takes to

bring the house down; with a smooth mix of

laughter and drama only the harshest of

critics could fail to be impressed. A classic

romantic musical, Oklahoma boasts a

timeless selection of familiar songs which

were given the full treatment by the players under their new musical director Eileen

Allison.

It was great to see so many new faces alongside the more familiar ones we look forward

to seeing in each show and everyone from chorus to lead gave their all. It is difficult to

single out any one of the talented cast for praise but spectacular performances came from

Elaine Hepworth (Aunt Eller), Jon Whiteley (Curley), Gemma McMinn (Laurey), Becky

McMinn (Ado Annie) and Andy Kemp (Jud Fry). Stunning

choreography by Hilary Needham, especially the dream ballet

scene, and a masterful production by Ann Littlefield made this

a not to be missed show.

The

performance

was very well

supported by a

first class

backstage team

whose efforts

made the whole

production as

seamless as any

West-End show.

The sets and costumes were top-drawer and

the musical accompaniment and direction by

Eileen Allison with Neil Redeyoff on drums

was, as ever, a delight.

If you didn‟t see it you missed out on

something special so make sure that

whatever Hatfield Woodhouse Players stage

next you are first in the queue for tickets!

NEWS FROM HATFIELD VISUAL ARTS COLLEGE

HATFIELD STUDENTS VISIT GERMAN CAPITAL 30 Hatfield Visual Arts College students and staff have recently returned from a six-day visit to

Berlin.

In temperatures which dipped to minus 15° C , they visited the places which tell the story of World War Two and post-war Germany, leading up to the re-unification in 1989.

The highlights were a visit to the Reichstag and a walk around the new glass dome designed by the

English architect Sir Norman Foster, the

Brandenburg Gate, a long walk along Unter den

Linden to Alexanderplatz in the heart of old East

Berlin.

A huge impact was made by visiting what is left of

the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie , the Olympic

Stadium and Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp.

On the return journey to the ferry in Rotterdam

the group visited a Jewish synagogue in the Dutch

town of Enschede, where they learned about the

Dutch resistance to the Nazi occupation of

Holland.

Mrs Jarrold, the group leader, said “ The students

had a great experience and many of them are

looking forward to going again next year.”

The photos show the students outside the Allied

Museum where they are seen admiring a Hastings

aircraft which was used to transport coal during

the Berlin Airlift of 1948 - 9 and sitting at the top

of the glass dome of the Reichstag where they had a birds eye view of the city.

Nursery ‘digs it’. If you have passed Hatfield Travis Infant School

recently then you may have noticed that our

outdoor Nursery area is a „hive‟ of activity. On the

1st March 2010, Bentley Training Centre began

work to create an outdoor area designed to

enhance our children‟s independence and learning.

Recently our reporters interviewed the builders

and recorded their findings.

In Nursery, some busy workmen are building a stage,

mud area and a sandpit.- Autumn.

In Nursery there was a mini digger. The mini digger

dug up the soil to make the playground more fun for

Nursery. Alice

When the whole of year 2 went into nursery, there

was a mini digger! They are going to have their own

big sandpit and a mud area so they can play. In

Nursery outside they have a pirate ship.- Amy.

At Nursery they are building sandpits and a little trim

trail and a digging pit and they are using a mini digger.

They said on Monday that it will take about three

weeks to finish it. At Nursery the play bits are at the

back where the grass used to be.- Chloe.

I wonder how many weeks it will take to make the Nursery playground. I am excited to see the

Nursery playground when it is finished- Arona

Some builders came to Nursery to make a new playground with a mud pit, a stage, a sand pit

and a trim-trail with stepping stones.- Olivia.

This project has been financed from the school budget, external funding and parental

contributions. We would like to thank all those who have been involved in the

development of the area and we are looking forward to using our new resource.

10 March 2010

Every time my dog gets out of its basket, it has wet its basket. Is this

bladder control? What can we do to prevent or help this situation?

Claire from Hatfield

Urinary incontinence can occur in male and female dogs of all ages but especially

when they get older. To get an accurate diagnosis, a veterinary surgeon would

need to examine your dog and get a urine sample to check for other signs of

illness. If it is incontinence due to age or a weak bladder then tablets or drops can

be prescribed to help reduce and make them feel much better as most dogs get

quite upset when they are used to be being quite clean.

How often should I bath my dog? P M from Hatfield

This can vary depending on whether your dog has a skin problem that may need

regular bathing with a prescribed

shampoo or treatment. If this is the case,

then advice on the number of times will

be given under the vet‟s direction. If it‟s

just for grooming and cleanliness, as long

as a dog shampoo is used and rinsed off

well then it can be done once a week,

remembering to dry your pet well after

bathing, especially in cold weather

conditions. Muddy paws can be cleaned

more often!

THE RAID APPEAL FUND We can now confirm that developers Waystone & AvVail

have indeed appealed and that a public enquiry is

expected – probably in June or July.

The RAID group would like to thank everyone in the

community for their support, in raising funds with regard

to the expected appeal. We have raised hundreds of

pounds in the last few months, this could not have been

done without you. One of the most successful and

enjoyable events was the sponsored walk in January,

which raised in the region of £1000.

You may remember that a DMBC planning committee refused an application for a very large Waste

Recycling Centre in Stainforth, in November last year.

It was refused on the grounds of being too close to residents homes. During this time we have been

busy raising funds, with your help, to assist us in the plan to fight the appeal, when it came along.

The community will need to raise several thousand pounds to ensure that expert legal assistance can

be brought to the appeal to help fight our case – on all the aspects, such as very heavy traffic and

possible polution. We are advised by DMBC that the incineration proportion of the DEW project

will seek planning approval very shortly. Please watch for fund raising events over the coming weeks – we look forward to seeing you there;

9th May, Sunday - Sponsored Walk, Hatfield In Springtime - walk into Cuckoo Lane/ Pudding & Dip

Lane area about 3 miles – start from Manor School Cuckoo Lane 10am

15th May, Saturday - Coffee morning, The Barn - 10am to Noon

There will be other events in April & May- Quiz nights etc

The community needs your support and thanks again for your support so far...............

ONWARDS AND UPWARDS FOR HATFIELD TOWN CRICKET CLUB…..

Hatfield Town Cricket Club has been a part of village life for some time now but it is only in recent

years that the team has started to live up to its potential.

We have excellent facilities situated on Carr side lane and boast one of the best playing surfaces in

the Doncaster region. This is mainly due to the endless hours of work put in by Groundsman Malc

Griffin who tirelessly prepares pitches whilst also opening the batting, and has even been seen on

occasions buttering bread.

On these excellent pitches we have 2 Saturday teams in the Pontefract league both of whom have

been promoted every year for the past few years in fact the club has won a trophy for the past 6

years. We also have a mid week 20/20 team, an indoor side that has recently represented

Doncaster area at finals at Headingley and 3 junior sides ranging from under 11‟s to 15‟s.

These junior sides are a relatively new venture for Hatfield and our thanks go to Gary French

jewellers for his kind sponsorship this year and also to other local businesses such as drains-aid,

www.printing.com and our regular contributors the Ingram Arms.

The season starts again on 24th April and if you are in the age bracket of 9-69 and fancy a game at

whatever level please pop down and have a go, if not pop down and have a beer and a walk round

and see a good game of cricket.

Feel free to contact Alan Barnes on 07891291128 or visit our website:

http://hatfield.play-cricket.com/home/home.asp. Although we are a progressive and

successful club we are keen to promote a community spirit and will welcome people and players of

all abilities. Andy Cutts, HTCC Morale Officer (non elected)

Your concerns are our priorities! Did you know that every community in Doncaster has a team dedicated to policing

your neighbourhood?

Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNT) were introduced two years ago to provide a local

policing service in the heart of communities. The teams were set up in partnership and

consist of police officers and council staff, who work with other agencies to focus on the

needs of the local communities in Doncaster.

The SNT’s hold regular monthly community meetings and invite you, the community,

to have your say and express any concerns or issues you have in your neighbourhood.

At the SNT community meeting for Hatfield & Stainforth, concerns were raised about speeding

vehicles in the area.

To tackle this concern, a Digital Speed Display (DSD) system was arranged to be set up on Kirton

Lane to catch any speeding vehicles on the morning of 3 March.

The DSD was set up at the roads speed limit and any vehicle that went past the DSD, the speed

they were travelling at flashed up on the system.

Nineteen vehicles were caught driving above the speed limit and their number plates were noted.

The vehicles owners were later sent advice letters to their home address, warning of the dangers of

excessive speeding in built up areas.

PCSO Graeme Duffin said, “We focus on the matters that the public tell us are affecting them and

speeding vehicles were raised as a concern. This operation was to make motorists aware of the

speed limit and hopefully reduce speeding in the future. More operations like this will take place and

will also include the use of a speed gun and the ability to issue people with fixed penalty notices for

speeding.”

BEAVER TALES Merlin and Kite say farewell for pastures new! It is with deep regret that Merlin and Kite say farewell to the Hatfield

Beaver Scout Group. We did intend to leave the group at Easter but

due to circumstances beyond our control, we have left slightly early

without the chance to say good bye .

Merlin has been part of the Beaver Section at Hatfield for 5 years, and

Kite for 18 months. We would just like to take this opportunity to

thank the Beavers, parents and friends for all the support we have had

during this time. We have really enjoyed our time running the Beaver section, and it has

been a fantastic experience and a lot of fun. We are not leaving Scouting, we are merely

moving to Barnby Dun to

help Annette run the

Beaver section there.

Although we will miss the

children at Hatfield

Beavers, we are really

looking forward to joining

the friendly Leadership

Team at Barnby Dun.

So farewell Hatfield

Beavers, we hope to see

you all at district events,

and thank you.

I do hope the new Leaders

will continue with Beaver

Tales because it has been

great to put all our

activities in the Hatfield

Arrow, and with that I would like to say a massive thank you to Julie Morrell at the Arrow

for all the help and support she has provided to the group.

Stay Level Headed at Rail Crossings Dear Readers,

It may be that we are all under time pressure. But drivers these days are more inclined than ever before

to “chance it” at lights. And not just “amber gamblers” – drivers can be ignoring red lights as well.

This is particularly dangerous at a level crossing.

So much so, a new advertising campaign has been launched, focussing on drivers who ignore red lights, and

sometimes barriers, and “take a chance” at level crossings. It‟s aimed at commuters who drive to work

and mothers on the school run. Apparently around four people a day gamble with their lives at level

crossings showing a red signal, and people die as a result. That is an unacceptable death toll for something

that could only save seconds on a typical journey.

The problem has been portrayed as on of the biggest risks of “catastrophe” on the rail network. 13

people died at crossings last year.

Rail chiefs insist that level crossings are safe if used correctly – even the unmanned ones, and the crossings

with no barriers. But if they are misused, the chances of surviving being hit by a train, no matter what

vehicle you are in, are virtually zero.

If you are approaching a level crossing be prepared to stop if the signal goes to amber. Use your mirrors

to see if there is somebody following you too closely and if so, gently brake in order that you can send

them a cautionary message.

Once the trains have gone and the signal is off again,

take a moment to glance both ways before you go

across the line, just in case. In heavy traffic when the

queue sometimes covers the railway line, never, ever

be tempted to stop on the track or half way.

Blocking a half-barrier crossing is extremely

dangerous.

How many smaller words can you make

using the letters above? I have found 3

words to start you off….

An

Sun

At

The name Easter comes from

Eostre, an ancient Anglo-Saxon

goddess, originally of the dawn. In

pagan times an annual spring festival was

held in her honour.

Easter is now celebrated (in the words of

the Book of Common Prayer) on the first

Sunday after the full moon which happens

on or after March 21, the Spring Equinox.

Therefore it can occur on any Sunday from

March 22nd through to April 25th. This

year it‟s on Sunday 4th April.

In medieval times a festival of egg throwing

was held in church, during which the priest

would throw a hard-boiled egg to one of

the choirboys. It was then tossed from one

choirboy to the next and whoever held the

egg when the clock struck 12 was the

winner and retained the egg.

Why did the

Easter Bunny cross

the road?

Because the Chicken

had its Easter Eggs!

Different Stages in Nursery

At Small World Day Nursery the children‟s

learning experiences are based around their

individual developmental needs.

From the age of 3 months, babies are given new

experiences according to their individual needs.

At such a young age babies learn through their

senses. Sounds, smells, physical contact, singing,

games and talking to your baby are vital; as well

as encouraging physical skills for crawling,

standing and walking.

Enjoying early games such as peek-a-boo,

clapping and finding hidden objects will all be

part of a child‟s daily play. There will also be

opportunities for one-to-one interaction with

staff and other children. We also spend

sometime each day playing outside. Now and

again, we take children for little walks in buggies

along the quiet roads behind the nursery.

From around the age of 12 months your child

will start to experience natural materials such as

water and sand as well as discovering the

pleasures of play dough, printing and brush

painting- all with close supervision of course!

From the age of 18 months your child will

slowly be integrated into the toddler room

where they are taught to become more

independent, they will be introduced to a wide

range of arts and crafts to develop their co-

ordination and concentration. Puzzles, number

games, drawing and singing will all be part of

their daily routine.

From the age of 3-5 your child will follow a

curriculum of the Early Learning Goals set out

by the Government. Children at this age will be

encouraged to develop all the necessary skills

and knowledge to give them an early start to

their education. This is the age when true and

strong friendships are built.

Conservative Candidate sets up Election Campaign HQ in Hatfield Matt Stephens, the new conservative candidate for the Don Valley constituency, standing against

Labour‟s high profile MP Caroline Flint, is basing himself in Station Road for the duration of the

campaign – expected to end on polling day May 6th- because he believes that the Hatfield vote is one

of the keys to victory.

Already his door-knocking consultation exercise has brought to light resident feelings on issues such

as the heavy traffic on Station Road, something he is experiencing first hand. Matt also fully

sympathises with the concerns of the RAID group over developments at Hatfield Colliery

“I am amazed just how much heavy traffic there is even without the major developments, plus the

fact that everything has to negotiate the bend at the Church. It‟s crazy” says Matt.

One of the big national issues that has come through loud and clear is that central government has

failed to heed the concerns of voters over the influx of immigrants into Britain. “The sheer number

of people and the different nationalities are overwhelming our public services“ he says “It‟s not a

racist issue. There are three times as many people coming to our shores than there were ten years

ago. Over the centuries this country has absorbed countless people and that has added to our

culture and our prosperity. People tell me they are angry with the Government for not being more

like the Aussies, careful of who they choose to come to the country and strong on the message that

they are coming to Britain which means they will need to speak English and live within out values

and culture. What makes them so disappointed and so angry is that no-one has been listening to

them.”

“Crime to is a major concern for everyone perhaps because it seems to have become more violent,

then there‟s Europe – another issue where voters feel let down by government, and it goes without

saying that everything we want to achieve is based on the success of our economy.”

One of Matt‟s pet hates is litter. “Keeping the streets litter–free tells people how proud you are of

your community. Doncaster is a fantastic place to live but unless litter is quickly cleared up, some

people think that this is the norm and it‟s OK to throw stuff down on the streets.”

Educated at Garforth Comprehensive and Lancaster University where he studied politics and

international affairs, his first task was to set up his own business in York and having seen young people at a loose end – he also set up a highly successful youth activity programme –GlobalYork.

With no background in active politics he took on the challenge of overturning an 8,000 Labour

majority because he sees the seat as “winnable”.

“I was so fed up with what has been happening over three Labour terms of office and things going

from bad to worse, I decided it was time to stand up and be counted. On my door stepping

campaign I have discovered a lot of people with the same feelings – often of outrage, feeling they

have been conned – and they have promised me their support.

In between campaigning, running his business and popping home to see his wife and two young

children he plans to hold regular “surgeries” right through the Don Valley, meeting people and

essentially listening to what they have to say. He sees Don Valley the election as a two-horse race –

“Any vote other than for me is in effect a vote for Labour. “He stresses “In this election is no place

for the traditional protest vote. We have to save the country from another four years of clunking

fist of top down Labour government”

Twitters emails and blogs play a big part in his communications strategy – for more information it‟s
