LITTLE RIVER RESTORATION PROJECT

Swift  Water  Training:

Rescue  Canada  Administration  has  registered  the  Pabineau  Research  Team  in  a  course  called,  “Swiftwater  Safety  Rescue  Awareness  -‐  Resource  Management  –  Level  1”.  The  e-‐learning  component  of  this  course  was  sent  by  e-‐mail  on  July  25,  2013.  The  Pabineau  Little  River  Research  Team,  (Robert  Kryszko,  Shawn  Richardson,  Jeremy  Malley,  Oscar  Johnson,  Noel  Prisk,  and  Lisa  Prisk)  received  their:  password,  username,  and  direct  landing  page  web  site  URL  for  the  on-‐line  portion  of  this  training.    In  order  to  advance  to  the  Field  Practicum  component  of  this  course:  the  person  must  make  a  score  of  80%  or  more  on  the  e-‐learning  component.

Results  for  Swift  Water  E-‐learning  Component:

Robert  Kryszko,  Noel  Prisk,  Lisa  Prisk,  Shawn  Richardson,  Jeremy  Malley,  and  Oscar  Johnson  have  made  or  surpassed  the  80%  requirement  and  will  advance  to  the  “Field  Practicum”  component.

Swift  Water  Field  Practicum  Component:

Attendance:  Robert  Kryszko,  Shawn  Richardson,  Jeremy  Malley,  Oscar  Johnson,  Noel  Prisk,  and  Lisa  Prisk.

All  of  the  Pabineau  Research  Team  learned  about  and  practiced:  throw  bags  techniques,  wading  techniques,  log  jam  techniques,  river  communication,  foot  entrapment,  hypothermia,  searching,  ropes  and  knots,  personal  flotation  device,  and  safety  measures.

To  ensure  the  safety  of  the  Pabineau  Research  Team,  each  person  working  or  conduction  activities  in  a  river  system  must  have  a  life  jacket;  in  addition  the  life  jackets  were  needed  to  complete  the  swift  water  training  as  well.

Results:

Robert  Kryszko,  Shawn  Richardson,  Jeremy  Malley,  Lisa  Prisk,  Noel  Prisk  and  Oscar  Johnson  have  successfully  gained  the,  “Swiftwater  Safety  Rescue  Awareness  -‐  Resource  Management:  Level  1  Certification”.

Electro-‐Fishing  Theory  Training:

Date  =  July  31    Trainer  =  Mark  Gautreau  from  Canadian  River  Institute,  Fredericton  N.B.    Attendance:  Robert  Kryszko,  Shawn  Richardson,  Jeremy  Malley,  Oscar  Johnson,  Noel  Prisk,  and  Lisa  Prisk.

In  order  to  advance  to  the  Field  Practicum  component  of  this  course:  the  person  must  make  a  score  of  80%  or  more  on  the  electro-‐fishing  theory  component  test.  The  theory  training  started  at  9am  and  final  testing  started  at  3pm.  The  final  test  contained  of  21  questions,  and  by  4:15pm  the  test  was  completed  and  past  in  to  Mark  Gautreau.

Results  of  Electro-‐Fishing  Theory  Exam:

Robert  Kryszko,  Shawn  Richardson,  Jeremy  Malley,  Oscar  Johnson,  Noel  Prisk,  and  Lisa  Prisk  successfully  made  80%  or  more  on  their  Electro-‐Fishing  Final  Theory  Exam  and  are  advancing  to  the  Field  Practicum  component  of  the  course.

Electro-‐Fishing  Field  Practicum  Training:

Date:  August  1,  2013    Time:  9am  Location:  Pabineau  Brook  Trainer  =  Mark  Gautreau  from  Canadian  River  Institute,  Fredericton  N.B.    Attendance:  Robert  Kryszko,  Shawn  Richardson,  Jeremy  Malley,  Oscar  Johnson,  Noel  Prisk,  and  Lisa  Prisk.

The  instructor,  Marc  Gautreau  started  the  field  practicum  by  discussing:  safety,  equipment,  crew  size,  site  condition,  LR-‐24  electro-‐fishing  unit  features,  operation,  voltage  setting  and  quick  set  up,  trouble  shooting,  care  and  maintenance,  care  of  handling  fish,  and  electro-‐fishing  applications  and  methods.

Mark  began  showing  the  group  how  to  set  the  electro-‐fishing  unit  (LR-‐24)  to  auto-‐set.  The  auto-‐setting  component  sets  the  LR-‐24  to  the  proper  voltage  for  the  conductivity  of  the  stream  bed.  The  auto-‐setting  is  usually  sufficient;  however,  if  there  is  high  turbidity  or  mud  water  flowing  down  from  the  river  banks  the  auto-‐setting  may  not  accurately  set  the  unit.  In  this  case,  the  worker  will  manually  increase  the  power  of  the  LR-‐24  by  either  increasing  the  voltage  or  decreasing  the  resistance  of  the  unit.

The  effectiveness  of  the  electro  fisher  is  affected  by  9  factors:

1. Voltage,  2. Electrode,  3. Water  conductivity  4. Water  temperature  5. Conductivity  of  the  stream  bed  6. Fish  distance  7. Fish  size,  8. Fish  Species,  and  9. Time  the  fish  is  in  the  electrical  field.

All  trainees  were  shown  proper  electro-‐fish  techniques,  dip  net  techniques,  anode  and  cathode  safety,  automatic  shut-‐off  and  tilt  shut-‐off  features,  audio  alarm,  quick  release  pack,  pole  switch,  immersion  sensor,  anode  sensor,  output  detector,  circuit  breaker,  battery  compartment  sensor,  and  temperature  sensor.

Results:

The  Pabineau  First  Nation  –  Little  River  Restoration  Project  Research  Team  learning  to  identify  the  various  parts  of  the  LR-‐24  unit  by  appearance  and  function;  in  addition  to  understanding  the  safety  standards  and  what  safety  gear  needed  to  operate  the  LR-‐24  unit,  determine  conditions  in  which  electro-‐fishing  can  be  conducted,  modify  settings,  attachments  of  electrodes  and  battery,  dip  netting  techniques,  identifying  aquatic  insects  and  species  of  fish,  and    how  to  treat  and  handle  fish  to  minimize  stress  and  harm.

Robert  Kryszko,  Shawn  Richardson,  Jeremy  Malley,  Oscar  Johnson,  Noel  Prisk,  and  Lisa  Prisk  have  received  certification  to  efficiently  and  effectively  operate  the  LR-‐24  electro-‐fishing  unit.
