Sophomores & Juniors to take PSAT on Wednesday, October 28 th

All sophomores and juniors will be taking the PSAT (Preliminary SAT) Wednesday, October 28th from 8:00-approximately 11:15am. This test is paid for by the Indiana Department of Education. It is a great practice

for preparing for the SAT and can also be useful in planning course selection.

PSAT scores have held increasing importance in recent years. Students must score 129 or higher in order to be eligible to earn dual credit through Oakland City University in English 11 or 12 Honors, Psychology, U.S. History, Government, Pre-Calculus, or AP Calculus. In addition, failure to meet College & Career Readiness

benchmarks on the PSAT will require students to participate in the Accuplacer Assessment which could result in remediation during the junior or senior years of high school in order to be ‘College and Career

Ready’ upon graduation. College ready means the student has the skills necessary to succeed at beginning college level classes without the need to take remedial coursework. Career ready is having the skills

necessary to qualify for and succeed in a technical program or an apprenticeship or to enlist in the military.

Seniors Exploring Engineering at PurdueThe Purdue Women in Engineering Program would like to invite you to a FREE daylong engineering program geared toward high school seniors called Seniors Exploring Engineering at Purdue on Monday, October 19th. The program is geared toward women in their senior year of high school interested in engineering. If interested register online at www.purdue.edu/WIEP and look under ‘News & Events’. Registrations are due by Oct. 12th.

Interested in a career in Dental Assisting or Dental Hygiene?Allied Dental Programs Day will be held on Saturday, November 7th from 9am-12:00noon at the IU School of Dentistry on the IUPUI campus. A special day has been set aside for anyone interested in pursuing a career as a dental assistant or dental hygienist. Faculty will give tours and provide information about both programs. According to the Hoosier Hot 50, Dental Hygienists rank #21 in terms of the fastest growing, high wage jobs that will be in demand in Indiana by 2022. Dental Hygienist median salary is $66,840. Required education includes an Associate’s Degree (2 years) which is offered at Ivy Tech Anderson & South Bend or a 4 year Bachelor’s Degree which is offered at IUPUI.

IUPUI hosting Informatics and Computing App ChallengeThe Informatics App Challenge seeks to encourage high school students with expertise in designing and developing mobile applications to share and demonstrate their creativity, team building, and app development skills in a high-energy, fun and motivating one-day event hosted by the School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI. In meeting with seniors, I shared with them the various ways to become an RN…via a 2 year degree (VU & Ivy Tech) or a 4 year degree. Last year in Indiana, one Physics teacher graduated in the entire state of Indiana. Teachers are in demand. There are financial aid incentives for students pursuing high-needs fields such as Middle School/High School math & science. Truck drivers…consider this…. do you shop online? Who brings the merchandise to your home? Do you own your own business? Who delivers your supplies? Truck drivers are in demand! Vincennes University offers a 6 week Tractor Trailer Driver Training program.

There is now a pathway in Indiana that if you have a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math major, minored in education and have a 2.5 GPA (in college), you can become licensed to teach!

Project Aspiree is taking several campus visits in the coming weeks! Juniors and seniors who are in Project Aspiree are welcome to participate!! Everything is paid for (including food) and transportation is provided!

October 23-24th: Visit Purdue Friday, October 23rd, spend the night in Indianapolis at Homewood Suites and see a performance of the ‘Addams Family’ at Beef and Boards Friday evening. Saturday students will tour IUPUI. Everything is paid for including hotel accommodations, food, and tickets for the show. Transportation is provided.

November 5th: Visit the University of Evansville, enjoy lunch, and tour the University of Southern Indiana in the afternoon! There is no cost and transportation is provided.

November 11th: Travel to Terre Haute and see what Indiana State University has to offer! Again, everything is paid for and transportation is provided!

Transfer Single Articulation Pathways (TSAPs)Beginning Fall 2015, students can earn their first 60 hours of a degree program at VU or Ivy Tech and then seamlessly transfer into any 4-year public institution in Indiana. TSAPs are available in Business Administration, Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Special Education, Electrical Engineering Technology, Information Technology and Informatics, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Nursing, and Social Work.

David L. Rice Merit Scholarship – USI

The primary scholarship offered by the University of Southern Indiana to all eligible applicants with permanent residency in the U.S.

To qualify, students must achieve a minimum 3.0 cumulative high school GPA and either a combined critical reading and math SAT score of 940 or an ACT composite score of 20. Award amounts vary based upon academic merit and are renewable.

Qualified students who apply by March 1 of their senior year automatically receive the Rice Scholarship based upon their application for admission.

21 st Century Scholars News Just as a reminder, students must have a 2.5 GPA to keep their 21st Century Scholarship! Current juniors & younger students must also graduate with the Core 40 diploma in order to keep their scholarship.

Highlight on Marian University Located in Indianapolis, Indiana

Total enrollment just under 3,000 students

This year Marian welcomed their 3rd class of 162 students to the College of Osteopathic Medicine. Marian continues to be Indiana’s first new medical program in more than 100 years and only one of five Catholic medical schools in the country – and the only one dedicated to training doctors of osteopathic medicine (DO’s).

Marian awarded over $26.5 million last year to students through grants and scholarships. 98% of incoming freshmen received financial aid.

VU Health Science programs to offer guaranteed admissionThe selective admission programs available in Health Sciences at VU are interested in students with strong academic backgrounds that score well on achievement tests. Richard G.
