Fr. Pat’s Corner….. “Andrew, the brother of Simon, was one of the two who

Heard John the Baptist and followed Jesus. Andrew found His brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah”. Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him

And said, “You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Cephas” (Peter in Latin or Rock in English) The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee where he found Philip and

Said to him, “Follow me.” (John 1:40-42)

What if Jesus gave you a “Title” the day he met you? Simon (Peter) gets the “Title” ROCK!

In the readings today (for the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time), Jesus is introduced to Jesus by his very excited brother Andrew.

The Jewish people have been waiting for the promised Messiah to ar-rive. He is prophesied in the Old Testament book from the prophets, Malachi, Jeremiah Isaiah, and the Book of Psalms. Jesus is the prom-ised Messiah (the “Christ” in Greek).

When Jesus meets Simon, son of John (or Jonah) he looks at him and tells him that he “will be called: “Cephas” (or rock). Now, nobody names their kids “rock”. So, what Jesus does is NOT rename Simon but give him a title. Jesus calls him “The Foundation” of the Church he will build. More than a Title (of foundation), Jesus sets Simon Peter aside again, as a leader. He establishes a perpetual way to bless and teach. Matthew 16:18-19 is where Jesus expands and explains this new name, this title of leadership and foundation. …… “And, so I say to you, you are Peter (or Cephas =rock), and upon this rock I will build my church!” “I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” By renaming Simon as ROCK, Jesus shows his intention to establish a hierarchy of leadership that will endure until He returns.

Jesus had intended to establish a foundation and a leadership with the 12 disciples that he commissioned at the Ascension. He goes from es-tablishing his Church on Earth to Ruling it from Heaven as the King of Kings. Jesus goes from instructor to Supreme commander of the Church at the Ascension. In this way, Jesus is with us always!

Matthew 28:16-20: “The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” May God Bless you, -Fr. Pat
