Second Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle B) Pastor’s Corner To do honor to our name is the work of a lifetime. Jesus Christ did not fulfill

completely His name until Calvary, but we must start by discovering the secret

vocation that God has tied to our name, just as Peter the Apostle did.

According to the Gospel we read in this weekend’s Masses, the disciples discover

that secret vocation through a personal encounter with Christ, sharing with Him as

with a friend. “Where are you staying?”, they ask. The experience of that encounter

changed the course of their lives as fishermen.

Jesus Christ lives among us. The celebration of the Eucharist is the celebration of the

Lord’s presence, the answer to the question, “Where are you staying?” Here we

encounter Jesus, speak with Him, eat with Him. May our experience of the

Eucharistic presence of the Lord help us to deepen our understanding of our

Christian name and to carry it out in our daily life. We hear Christ’s invitation:

“Come and you will see.” What is our answer to it?

Today is the first day of the Octave for Christian Unity. Let us join in prayer that “all may be one”, as the Lord prayed in the Last Supper (John 17:21).

The Epiphany Party brought together many ministries and volunteers in a great evening of fun and

friendship.

For the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, we renewed our baptismal promises, and Fr. Federico gave a “baptismal demonstration” to the children by sprinkling them with water from the baptismal font.

One in Faith, One in Hope, One in Charity Together, as one family of God, we continue to build the Kingdom of God

here in South Florida. Because of you and your stewardship through the

Archbishop’s Charities and Development Drive (ABCD), in the past year

alone, you are helping to train the largest group of seminarians the

Archdiocese has enjoyed in many years; through ABCD you are assisting our

most needy Catholic elementary and high schools, and you are continuing to

support the evangelization efforts within our migrant community in south

Dade. Thanks to your support of ABCD our Respect Life ministry continues

to grow, and we continue to minister to the seafarers and at the airports.

These are extraordinary accomplishments – all made possible because of you!

If you have not already responded to the letter sent to you by Archbishop

Thomas Wenski received by mail, please take time to consider your pledge

for this year. Your faithful and generous participation in the ABCD flows

from God’s many blessings to you and to those you hold dear. We ask for

your continued support and invite you to join us to be One in Faith, One in

Hope and One in Charity. Thank you.

Gracias.

Mothers: the teachers of faith

General Audience, January 7, 2015

A society without mothers would be an inhuman society, as mothers always

know how to show tenderness, devotion and moral strength, even in the

moments of greatest difficulty. Mothers often also transmit the deepest

sense of religious practice. … It is a message that mothers who believe

know how to transmit without much explanation; this arrives later, but the

seed of faith is planted in those first precious moments. Without mothers

… faith would lose a good part of its simple, profound warmth”.

Mission Statement St. Hugh Catholic School is a Christ-centered school whose mission is to instill in its students a lifelong commitment to

learning, to Christian values, and to community service. St. Hugh is dedicated to excellence in education and to the

spiritual development of youth within the framework of the Gospel and the tradition of the Catholic Church

Books on Parade First and third grade children shared their love for reading during

their annual Book Parade held on January 13th. Students in these two classes were asked to read

a book, complete a book report, and create a moving float depicting an event or scene from the

story. The students dressed up as characters from the books they read and paraded down the

school hall while parents and the other school children enjoyed watching them.

The book parade allowed these students to celebrate reading by bringing books to life.

To view more pictures of the Book Parade, please visit the school website at
