Second Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Ann Catholic Church January 20, 2019

Dear Friends,

In today’s Gospel, we hear the third of the three mysteries we commemorated on the Feast of the Epiphany: the miracle at the Wed-ding in Cana. As I mentioned last weekend, this feast too foreshadows our Lord’s Passion and Death. Most important-ly, it foreshadows that night when, instead of changing water into wine, He would change wine into His Pre-cious Blood for the salvation of the world.

As should be clear, our Lord was not coerced into doing a party trick for the good of the wedding guests! Our Blessed Mother, always responsive to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, asked her Son to perform this first of His miracles. The reasons are many:

1. She showed the power of her in-tercession, since by her request, our Lord manifested His power to the

world for the first time.

2. She received the reply from Christ, “Woman, what is this to me and to you?” which was a subtle sign of their role as the New Adam and New Eve.

3. He manifested His power and command over nature, to prepare His disciples’ minds and hearts for the more important transformation in the Eucharist.

4. Mary gives the all-important com-mand to the servants and, symboli-cally, to all of us: “Do whatever He tells you.”

5. Our Lord beginning His public min-istry at a wedding shows that this natural union is now elevated to the level of a Sacrament.

What a rich Gospel! May we thank the Lord for the gift of His Mother, the gift of the Holy Eucharist, and the gift of Holy Matrimony!

In Christ, Fr Marotti

PRAYER TO SAINT MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.

Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.

May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou,

O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

LIGHT OF CHRIST ACADEMY A Good Shepherd Montessori

School for Ages 3-6 A classical school grades K-8

We have open enrollment all year. Contact Office Administrator Mary Memmott for a tour at

269•203•6808 • lightofchristacademy.org Latin is an important aspect of the classical educa-tion offered at Light of Christ Academy. As this is the first time with Latin for most students, the upper Academy students learn the beginning concepts of Latin grammar and vocabulary, with an eye toward translating simple thoughts and sentences -- or, for our middle school students, more complex grammatical constructions.

As for the Montessori children, they get very excited about their Latin exposure "lessons". They explore simple, familiar words and phrases ('hello,' 'thank you,' numbers, colors, and more!). They are all ea-ger and curious to discover new names for the things in their world!

Students at Light of Christ Academy spend time studying The Great Books. These particular books are called this, not because of the subjective deci-sion or opinion of an individual or group; rather, they are called Great because they collectively make up the rich intellectual, cultural, spiritual framework of our Western Civilization. Whether we agree with all of the ideas and authors contained in this canon of literature, it remains true that the ideas and authors that make up these works have been important steps in our collective understanding of God, man, and society. From Euclid to Einstein, from Parmeni-des to Nietzsche, from Sophocles to Shakespeare, et al., in reading these Great Books, we enter the Great Conversation of our civilization. The minds of the students at Light of Christ Academy are formed by participating in this conversation - both rejoicing in the great truths and analyzing the major errors.

THE THREE WISE MEN AND A WOLF? By Sherry Gesmundo (2017)

Because many have asked…

While many, if not all, nativity images we see include animals like the ox, donkey and lamb, the wolf is less common and may even be somewhat puzzling as to its inclusion within the nativity. Allow me to recall the story of the Wolf of Gubbio…

Gubbio is a small town located in Central Italy that was being terrorized by a fierce wolf killing the people of the village, including children. All who attempted to destroy it were devoured by the beast. Around 1220, Saint Francis of Assisi traveled to Gubbio to meet the wolf. When St. Francis encountered the wolf, it came charging at him, ready to attack. St. Francis immediately made the sign of the cross over the wolf and said, “Come here, Brother Wolf. I command you on behalf of Christ that you do no harm to me or to anyone.” As soon as Saint Francis spoke those words, the fearsome wolf came to him meekly as a lamb and laid at his feet.

St. Francis then scolded Brother Wolf for destroying and killing the creatures of God and explained that he wanted to make peace between him and the people of Gubbio. And so he promised that the people provide the wolf with food, so that he will no longer suffer hunger, and in exchange, the wolf must promise to never harm any human person or animal. The wolf showed his agreement by bowing his head and putting his right paw in St. Francis’s hand, a sign of true wonder for all that watched.

Two years later, Brother Wolf passed away of old age. The town of Gubbio was sad-dened at the wolf’s passing and gave him an honorable burial and later built the Church of St. Francis of the Peace at the very site of his grave.

St. Francis is also credited with creating the first crèche in 1223. So, during the Christmas Season at St. Ann the wolf in our nativity reminds us to hold the vision of a future in which all of God’s creation lives in peace and harmony and, like St. Francis, we too can be instruments of peace.

As a host you would put out donuts, make sure the drinks are filled and then clean up. You only need to sign up for after one of the Masses on a Sunday. To sign up go to our website at stannaugusta.org/donuts

BRING IN YOUR PALMS! We are getting ready for Ash Wednesday on March 6th and it’s time to collect last year’s palms to burn.

Did you know that Palms are considered sacramentals? "Sacramentals are sacred signs which in a sense imitate the sacraments. They signify certain effects, especially spiritual ones, and they achieve these effects through the intercession of the Church." [C.C.C. # 1166] Palms become sacramentals when they are blessed by the Church for Palm Sunday and are to then be treated with reverence. Therefore, one should never throw blessed palms away in the garbage. Rather, one should bring them back to the church where Deacon and/or Father will burn them to use as the ashes for Ash Wednesday.

You can drop your palms off in the baskets found at the church

THE PRESENCE RETREAT 2019

The presence is a response to the challenge of Pope John Paul II to “become shining heralds of the re-evangelization and generous architects of the civilization of love.” The focus on the Eucharist shows young people that Christ must be at the center of their lives. The format of the retreat, which includes the Mass, the Sacrament of Recon-ciliation, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, prayer, talks, music and fellowship, provides a means to help young people develop a deep and lasting personal relationship with Jesus Christ, especially in the Eucharist, “the source and summit of Christian life” (Lumen Gentium 11). Young people gain a solid foundation upon which to build their lives.

Come and see Sr. Helena Burns, Full Armor Band, and JESUS!

This conference is hosted at the Sherman Lake YMCA February 22-24. The cost is $90. Registration ends soon! Go to www.presenceretreat.com/register and sign up today!!
