Dear Friends,

This weekend - in fact, this whole week - we have the privilege of commemorating, hon-oring and celebrating our parish patroness, the mother of the Mother of God. We should never forget or underestimate how im-portant the patronage of a saint is. Far from merely providing a title by which one parish is distinguished from another, a parish patron(ess) is a special intercessor before the Throne of God who never ceases to pray for every individual here. What a great gift that is!

All of us are familiar with the role of a grandparent: spoiling the grandchil-dren, of course! I suggest that this weekend, we might reflect on the fact that, as adopted brothers and sisters of Christ, we are very spoiled by the loving intercession of our spiritual grandmother, St. Ann. While our most powerful saintly interces-sion comes from the Blessed Mother, surely her mother has an important role in the heavenly household. Just as innocent children often make grand requests of their grandparents, so should we be bold in our requests to St. Ann. Indeed, even the story of St. Ann’s own life, seen in the Protoevangeli-um of James, continues a long scriptural tradition of seemingly impossible requests being fulfilled. Her barren womb did not deter her from trusting in God’s goodness, and she was not disappointed: she gave birth to the greatest saint in history,

the Blessed Virgin Mary. Why would we not ask for the “impossible” from God? How often I hear people lamenting a family member who has fallen away from the Faith, or an especially difficult and complicated work or family situation, or a prolonged, seemingly endless period of physical or emotional suffering. These indeed are not easy situations to bear! However, discouragement and despair in the face of seemingly overwhelming disappointment is precisely what Scripture warns us against, time and time again. It is only when we are faced with such impossible odds that we can truly rely on God alone. Let’s take this wonderful parish celebration as a reminder that we have a patroness who is able to strengthen us by her unwavering confidence in God’s Providence, and even more so by her perpetual intercession for us. Sancta Anna, ora pro nobis!

Ann, blessed above all others, we, too, bring our reverence, for you have given birth to the girl from whom He will come Who is the basis of all our hope. Blessed, indeed, above all others, and blessed in your offspring! The tongues of all believers sing the praises of your child. Every voice is raised in joy at her birth. How worthy Ann is of praise, most worthy, for she received the message of God’s goodness, and brought forth such fruit that from it would come our Lord, Jesus.

AVAILABLE OPPORTUNITY

Light of Christ Academy is in need of growing their substitute teacher list for the 2019-2020 school year. Please contact Mary Memmott for details at [email protected] Our parish Montessori and Classical school offers many activities to our students outside of the tradi-tional school day like our Makerspace Mondays or Summer Science Camp.

This week several students enjoyed spending time together learning about the wonders of God’s creation during science camp.

Kids created slime and blew slime bubbles as we discussed polymers.

Students learned about circuits as they created paper circuit art.

Experimenting with water beads was a fun way to learn about polymers, and to practice using scales and recording data.

FIRST SATURDAY MASS AND DEVOTION

Sung Mass in the Extraordinary Form

AUG 3 I 8:30 am

We invite all to join us in making the First Saturday Devotion which Our Blessed Mother requested and made known through Sister Lucia, one of the Fati-ma seers. This devotion has great power to prevent evil and obtain peace in our world.

Mass followed by

• Confession

• Devotional Prayers

• Five decades of the Rosary

• Keeping Our Lady company for 15 minutes while meditating on the

mysteries of the Rosary

The Christ Child said, “Have compassion on the heart of your most holy Mother, covered with thorns, with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment, and there is no one to make an act of reparation to remove them.” Then the most holy Virgin said: “Look, my daughter, at my Heart, surround-ed with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce me at every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. You at least try to console me and say that I promise to assist at the hour of death, with the graces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months, shall confess [their sins], receive Holy Communion, recited five decades of the Rosary, and keep me company for fif-teen minutes while meditating on the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me.”

(Words of Our Lord and Lady to Sister Lucia on December 10, 1925 from Lucia’s Memoirs, p 195.)

DISMEMBERMENT ABORTION PETITION A statewide signature gathering effort is now underway across Michi-gan to ban the dismemberment abortion procedure. Over the next few months, the signatures of 400,000 registered voters are needed to bring this measure before Michigan lawmakers.

Contact the parish office to sign the dis-memberment abortion petition and make your pro-life voice heard today.

There is also a second petition drive from the “Michigan Heartbeat Coalition.” The petition language would prohibit any abortion after cardiac activity is detected (approximately 6-8 weeks of gestation). While the intent of this legislation is honora-ble, there is cause for great concern. Michigan law already protects all unborn children, once a heartbeat is detected and even prior to its detection. This heartbeat petition drive could weaken and potentially supersede Michigan’s existing pro-life law. Therefore, Michigan Catholic Conference and the Catholic bishops in this state are not supporting the heartbeat drive.

Our Lady of Lourdes in Chicago is Mary Flemming’s new parish “home away from home”. Recently she checked our the grotto which is a room depict-ing the cave in Lourdes and discovered they have Perpetual Adora-tion there. How cool is that?

Tom and Mary Zavitz visited St. Peter’s Cathedral in Marquette. It’s the mother church of the Diocese of Mar-quette. Construction began in 1864 with Venerable Bishop Frederic Baraga lay-ing the cornerstone.
