Welcometo The Lace Market Theatre
Season 2011 - 2012The 2010/11 season was an artistic and popular success and I hope that this season will continue to entertain our regular patrons and attract people who have not visited us before. We have tried to include something for everyone, from comedy to tragedy, from thriller to lovestory and from classic to modern drama.
The season begins in the studio with Speaking in Tongues by Andrew Bovell, an intriguingdrama in which four actors share nine characters who experience a variety of situations including marital infidelity and trauma and even suspected murder. The black comedy,Accidental Death of an Anarchist by Italian playwright Dario Fo, is a political farce, based on events that occurred in 1969 when Guiseppe Pinelli ‘fell’ out of the fourth floor window of a Milan police station. The Merry Wives of Windsor is our contribution to the RoyalShakespeare Company's open stages project. The fat knight Sir John Falstaff from Henry lVParts One and Two arrives in Windsor broke and looking for love.
The next studio show is a double bill of two short plays. Jabiru by Margaret Johnson features a young couple, one of whom lives in Nottingham and the other in Brighton. They are on a bird watching holiday in Belize, hoping to see the elusive Jabiru. Murray Schisgal's The Typistsfollows the lives and relationship of two office workers.
Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island needs no introduction except that this adaptation by Phil Willmott has changed the gender of some of the main characters and there is a veryinteresting parrot. This is our Christmas show which should delight children and adults alike. There is a change of mood in January with The Kiss of Death by Simon Williams. This is a hard hitting thriller full of menace and dark humour. The Rise and Fall of Little Voice by JimCartwright causes the mood to change yet again. It is the tragic, comic story of a girl with anamazing singing talent and those who wish to exploit her.
Set in South Africa, The Road to Mecca by Athol Fugard treats the themes of creativity, imagination, love and old age in a totally unexpected way. From deep emotions to a comedy of manners - The Rivals by Richard Sheridan is a classic of the eighteenth century set in fashionable Bath. It is full of lovers, deceptions, witticisms and malapropisms.
Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen is one of the most acclaimed plays of the nineteenth century.Hedda is her father's daughter rather than her husband's wife and this perhaps is the cause ofher downfall. The serious mood is continued in Doubt by John Patrick Shanley, the next studioproduction. A nun accuses the priest of a church in the Bronx of interfering with a young boy,and yet there is doubt. We remain in the USA for Boston Marriage by David Mamet. This is a modern play set at the turn of the nineteenth century. Using witty dialogue shot through withsurprising double entendres and vernacular expressions, two single middleclass women debatetheir relationship with each other and other people.
The season ends with a musical - Jack the Ripper by Ron Pember and Denis De Marne. This reconstruction of the events that took place between August and November 1888 is set in a music hall where actors take on the characters of 'real' people as well as audience and performers. We look forward to seeing you at The Lace Market Theatre and hope you willfind something to make you cry, something to make you laugh and something to think about on your way home.

The Merry Wives of WindsorBy William Shakespeare
Shakespeare's only play about
ordinary Elizabethan citizens
provides a wealth of extraordinary
characters, from the ageing Lothario,
Sir John Falstaff and his retinue of
Bardolph, Pistol and Nym, to the
egregious Sir Hugh Evans, an
interfering Welsh priest, and the
belligerent French doctor Caius.
Merry Wives is a story of love,
jealousy, lust and revenge, with
a touch of magic thrown in at the
end. It is as close to farce as
Shakespeare gets. Our production
is part of the Royal Shakespeare
Company's Open Stages programme.

Dickens wrote of David Copperfield: 'Of all my books I like this the best'.
It tells the story of the trials and tribulations that beset David as he

marriage to Mr Murdstone, to settling down with his own wife. On the
way we get to meet some of literatures greatest characters; Miss Betsy
Trotwood, Miss Murdstone, Creackle, the Peggoty family, the

RSC Open StagesWhat is the RSC Open Stages Project?
An unique UK-wide collaboration between professional and amateur
theatre.
• The RSC has joined with leading amateur theatre
organisations and eight regional theatres across the UK
to share skills and showcase RSC Open Stages amateur
productions.
• RSC Open Stages Culminates in a national showcase of amateur
performances at the RSC's home in Stratford-upon-Avon to coincide
with the World Shakespeare Festival in 2012.
On the eve of the RSC's 50th birthday year, the Company celebrates the central
importance of amateur theatre in the cultural life of the UK with an unprecedented
collaboration of eight regional/national theatres. Those amateur theatres who
participate will receive professional support with opportunities for performance and
skill sharing, encouraging learning and collaboration to create a genuine legacy for
future amateur and professional theatre makers.
Each group has been asked to 'pitch' for a production within a specific brief i.e. not
led by professionals, and the production should be a Shakespeare play, adaptation,
or have a Shakespeare theme. It should be ambitious, embrace an exciting new
challenge for the audience and show a spirit of adventure.
In return the participating companies will receive an RSC Open Stages marketing
pack, to help with publicity and recruiting for their performances. They will be invited
to attend RSC Open Stages Exchange events hosted by the participating regional
theatres. The eight participating regional/national theatres will then host regional
showcases, featuring performances of selected productions. These showcase events
will provide an opportunity for amateur groups to celebrate their work and give
audiences a chance to see a huge range of work exploring responses to Shakespeare.
The project culminates in a national celebration, when a selection of RSC Open
Stages groups are invited to perform their productions on the stage at the RSC in
Stratford, as part of the World Shakespeare Festival, performing alongside the
Company's own festival productions and those from theatre companies around the
world.
LMT's contribution is our production of Merry Wives Of Windsor and David Supper,
the director, says he is aiming for a fast moving production involving an extensive use
of physical theatre and a controversial (by LMT standards) fluid set. Details of auditions
are posted elsewhere in the Playbill, on the theatre notice board, and on the theatre
website.
