CONTEMPORARY DRAMA NEW WRITING MODERN CLASSICS COMEDY PLAYS FOR FAMILIES PARTICIPATION FOR ALL AGES

We are immensely proud to be premiering, in association with The Lowry, Ayub Khan-Din’s wonderful play about a Salford family, All The Way Home; our Christmas production will be the excellent Alan Bennett adaptation of The Wind in the Willows; and – a rare treat this – in March we will be producing The Daughter-in-Law, a marvellously rich play by DH Lawrence, a writer whose plays are unjustly neglected.

Details will be announced later of next year’s major site-specific piece Manchester Lines but it will be written by Jackie Kay, directed by Wils Wilson, with music by Errolyn Wallen.

And of course plans are developing fast for our new First Street city centre home in partnership with Cornerhouse due to open in 2014.

We take pride in playing a key role in the city and its communities, and helping to make Manchester a great place to live.

Chris HonerArtistic Director

“If there’s a more consistently brave,

intriguing and inspired theatre in Manchester, then

I’ve yet to discover it!... A real, and almost unique,

citizen’s theatre, it has its feet firmly on the ground...

but its head and its heart in the stars. Just about the

best theatre we’ve got.”

WELCOME

SO WHAT ELSE FOr CHApTEr TWO?

Chapter One of the new story of the Library Theatre Company has gone astonishingly well.

Three highly successful productions at The Lowry have seen us reaching new audiences as well as retaining followers from our old home and our first adventure into site-specific work – Charles Dickens’ Hard Times in Murrays’ Mills – was universally acclaimed and played to an extraordinary 100% capacity.

An exciting collaboration between the Library Theatre Company and The Lowry, this is the world premiere of a much anticipated new drama by Salford’s Ayub Khan-Din, whose hugely successful work as a stage and screen writer includes East is East, West is West and Rafta, Rafta.

Bonfire Night. Present day Salford. A disparate group of warring siblings gather at the family home under the shadow of impending loss. Amidst the cut and thrust of spiky Salford banter, long harboured resentments rise to the surface, as family bonds unite and divide, unravel and unwind.

All The Way Home is a deeply emotional comedy drama that explores the relationships we have with our roots, and with those that we love but don’t always understand.

Contains strong language.

Please be aware that there will be smoking on stage during the performance.

The tales of Ratty, Mole, Badger and the incorrigible, preposterous Toad have been delighting us for generations. When Mole abandons his spring-cleaning for the enchanting world of the riverbank, so begins an adventure that leads to magnificent Toad Hall, to the open road (poop poop!), to the perilous Wild Wood – and finally to battle!

Alan Bennett’s version of the classic fantasy tale is true to the original, yet written with distinctive Bennett flair and humour. The exploits of our four much-loved friends are woven with clever songs and witty dialogue – brilliant festive fun for all children from 6 years old.

Miner Luther Gascoigne and socially ambitious Minnie are newly wed. Luther’s mother disapproves; in her view Minnie’s pretensions make her an unsuitable match. A shocking revelation from Luther’s past provokes a rich drama of sexual tension and class conflict all set during the bitter 1912 miners’ strike.

With its wonderfully authentic dialogue and deep understanding of relationships, The Daughter-in-Law affirms DH Lawrence, famous for his novels and poetry, as a playwright of the front rank.

playing Up North will explore a selection of Northern plays from Harold Brighouse and Stanley Houghton to contemporary writers including Simon Stephens and Richard Bean.

Over a period of five weeks, the course will place focus on acting skills and through a rehearsal process will analyse the various demands these plays place on the actor. How as actors do we approach different styles of play and make an older play come alive for a modern audience?

The course will culminate in an informal performance for an invited audience of industry professionals.
