Dear Friends of the SDSO:

Welcome to a new, fresh, and exciting season of your orchestra. We at the SDSO strive to bring to you, the city of Sioux Falls, the state, and the region the best of the great legacy of classical music. Our offerings are broad, from the greatest works of the past—the monumental B Minor Mass of Bach—to the most important works of our own time, such as John Luther Adams’ Become Ocean, a meditation on the world we share.

Each of our programs is a special event. While they are each created to be uniquely experienced, together they form a rich exploration of music from all over the world and throughout time. This season will include music from Syria and Iran, side-by-side, finding common ground through sharing what we love. Ravel takes us to Spain and dazzles us with sounds and colors that scintillate. Rachmaninoff’s Russia, Beethoven and Mozart’s Vienna—a veritable musical tour of times and places—are all included in our 2016-17 season.

Jon Kimura Parker, a pianist who has received accolades from around the globe, joins us for Brahms’ monumental Piano Concerto No. 2. Our opera this season is considered by many scholars to be the greatest ever composed, Mozart’s exquisite Don Giovanni. And we celebrate thirty years with our principal clarinetist, the incomparable Christopher Hill, who is a treasure to the SDSO and to the entire community.

This is what a symphony orchestra brings; why what it does is so important. Nowhere else will you find this kind of musical breadth and depth. And your SDSO, made up of fine musicians from all over the region, plays every program with a no holds barred commitment to excellence, integrity, and passion.

Join us! There are so many ways to be a part of the music including special ticketing programs for new audience members and educational activities attached to every program. Immerse yourself in this ocean of great music, of art written for the ages and for us, right now.

BECOME OCEANTHREE MEDITATIONS ON THE BEAUTY OF WATEROCTOBER 8 7:30 PM

The SDSO opens its 95th season with three meditations on the beauty, power, and majesty of the earth’s most abundant resource. Wagner’s Ring Cycle begins and ends in the waters of the Rhine; Debussy’s masterpiece captures the sea during various times and moods. The SDSO lends its voice to the 2016 centennial celebration of the Pulitzer Prize by performing 2014 winner John Luther Adams’ Become Ocean. The New Yorker’s Alex Ross said: “There are shocks of beauty, shocks of feeling, shocks of insight. Such were the virtues of John Luther Adams’ Become Ocean.”

Schumann SYMPHONY NO. 2JANUARY 14 7:30 PM

Celebrating the glorious sound of the symphonic orchestra, this concert opens with a side-by-side performance with the South Dakota Symphony Youth Orchestra of Rossini’s La Gazza Ladra Overture. New York Philharmonic Vice President of Education Theodore Wiprud describes his world premiere piece Sinfonietta as: “A colorful work exploring the outer limits of religious experience.” Schumann’s powerfully luminous Symphony No. 2 concludes the program.

The SDSO’s annual tradition of semi-staged opera continues with this staple of the opera repertoire, considered by many to be the greatest opera ever composed. Mozart’s thrilling tale of the gallant Don Giovanni, his philandering, and ultimate downfall is filled with comedy, intrigue and, well ... Hell. Mozart Don Giovanni

Sonorous. Luxurious. The sound world of these two composers is filled with rich and beautiful movements, each one unique but deeply moving and satisfying. Rachmaninoff’s First Symphony is comprised of all of the elements for which he is known and loved: gorgeous melodies, powerful rhythms, and perfectly placed climaxes. Pianist Jon Kimura Parker has performed for Queen Elizabeth II, the U.S. Supreme Court, and the Prime Ministers of Canada and Japan, and now brings his mastery to the SDSO with Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2.

Renowned violist and Curtis Institute President Roberto Diaz joins the SDSO in a program exploring the power of music to connect even the most estranged cultures. Syrian-American composer Malek Jandali and Persian-American composer Behzad Ranjbaran join us for this musical dialogue, focusing on the peace to be achieved through sharing our love of music.

Two of Ravel’s most-loved works—Rapsodie espagnole and the iconic Boléro —close this evening full of ravishing sonic beauty.

BachB MINOR MASSAPRIL 22 7:30 PMAPRIL 23 2:30 PM

The B Minor Mass, along with the St. Matthew Passion, is considered to be one of the most significant works of Bach, the greatest composer of music for the church. Bach never heard this work in its completed form, so it is left for us to scale its heights and plumb its mysteries. It is a transcendent work, and a stunning finale for the SDSO’s 2016-2017 season.
