Sarah’s intro

In 2014 we’re going to ‘Shake It Up’ in Griffith by offering some more tantalizing experiences in both performance and visual arts.

Not only do we have a fabulous season planned for you at the theatre, but we are also launching an education brochure early in the year with full curriculum links to both our theatre and gallery schools programs.

I’m looking forward to our Film Season in 2014. My favourite has to be the Halloween party and screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show, there will be surprises in store I’m sure!

We will also be creating stronger links at the theatre with our exceptional community arts family. 2014 will see GRAPA, Lillie Duxbury and Dona Parise come into the theatre with our support and I look forward to growing these relationships over the coming years.

A special thanks to our sponsors for continuing the journey with us in 2014 and a very warm welcome to our new wine partner Calabria Family Wines.

I continually count my blessings that I’m here in Griffith surrounded by a fantastic community that holds both the theatre and art gallery close to their hearts.

As we say back home in New ZealandHe aha te mea nui o tea o?He tangata! He tangata! He tangata! What is the most important thing in the world? It is people! It is people! It is people!

- Sarah

Genteel housewife and mother Deborah has an addiction. ‘I’m a bookaholic,’ she confesses. ‘I just can’t help myself.’Deborah’s youngest daughter has finally flown the nest and her husband Wally is absent, burning off the fuel of a mid-life crisis with endless rounds of golf and tennis. Deborah is also occupied, enjoying romantic lunches with Martin Amis and passionate hotel trysts with John Updike. But that’s just in her dreams. The spice of Deborah’s real life is her book club. For the women who take part, it’s a meeting of minds – and their very different lifestyles. But when a famous author joins the group for a study session, Deborah’s own life suddenly switches from an old wives’ tale to the stuff of erotic fiction. The ensuing affair takes her love of linguistics to a whole new level.

“This is a flawless production, with flawless performances from the cast of five. In fact, I couldn’t fault anything about it, and the fact that I was almost physically sick with tension and terror says as much about Michael Futcher and his cast as it does about the power of George Orwell to chill us to the bone.”

Strap yourself in for this terrifically frightening theatrical event set against a towering wall of plasma screens. Oceania; a Nation perpetually at war, where cameras watch every move and Thought Police roam the streets. A place Winston Smith calls home. By day, Winston is an editor at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history to align the past with the radical political agenda of the ruling party and its illusive leader, Big Brother. By night, Winston pursues a forbidden love affair with the mysterious Julia in an attempt to rebel against the oppressive regime set down by the party and maintain some control over his otherwise totally controlled life. When Winston and Julia are discovered, they are violently separated, detained and prepared for conversion. Locked in the Ministry of Love and interrogated by the quietly terrifying O’Brien, Winston is beaten, manipulated and subjected to sickening torture in an attempt to make him reject dreams of liberation and understand that free thought and logic is the only true enemy.

But this isn’t just a stand-up show, the third player in the game is award winning documentary film maker, Charlie Hill-Smith (Strange Birds in Paradise). It’s lonely at the top. When King Henry V is manipulated by church advisors, taunted by French royalty and betrayed by English nobles, he has all the ammunition he needs to lash out and invade France. Or does he? Having executed conspirators, and vanquished enemy forces in Harfleur, Henry’s army is ‘weak and sickly’ as it staggers towards a showdown at Agincourt. The night before battle, the king endures a long dark night of the soul, where he hears first-hand about the fears and frailties of his outnumbered soldiers. But Henry holds one last weapon: the power of words. And it may just save his men, his country and himself.

Damien Ryan’s courageous production of Henry V promises to be an unflinching examination of the questions that Shakespeare raises; about political spin, patriotism, religion, class, monarchy, brotherhood and how leaders respond during times of crisis.

‘There’s a reason the name Bell Shakespeare has become synonymous with quality theatre.’ – ArtsHub

Featuring Satsuki Odamura (bass koto)

Australia’s world-acclaimed taiko drumming ensemble, TaikOz, returns to Griffith to present a stunning new work.

Based on a haiku by Japanese poet Miura Yuzuru, Toward The Crimson Sky has been written by TaikOz Artistic Director Ian Cleworth, evoking the poem’s sensual, dramatic and often playful imagery of a cloud of dragonflies ascending into a deep red sky.

The thunderous drumming of the taiko is interwoven with the hypnotic melodies of the shakuhachi and shinobue bamboo flutes, voice and a rare performance on the bass koto, a traditional Japanese 17-stringed plucked instrument to be played by special guest artist Satsuki Odamura.

The program will also feature new works by the two youngest TaikOz members: from the peaceful meditation of Solace by Tom Royce-Hampton to the dynamic high energy of Exploration by Anton Lock.
