This came after his winning time of

19.26sec in the Belgian capital in

what was the second fastest ever

clocked for the distance. And it

could have been even faster as

Blake’s reaction time was the

slowest of the nine-man field.

But who is the man behind the

Beast??? Who is Yohan Blake? The

22 year old was born in St. James

but attended St. Jago High School

in the old Capital of Spanish Town,

alma martyr to some of our great

athletes.

Jamaicans and others interested in

our track and field prowess became

very excited at the 2011 IAAF

world championships in Daegu

when Blake ended Bolt’s three-year

reign of supremacy at

championship level by winning the

100m after Bolt dropped out of the

race by false starting.

But shortly after that, Blake in his

own words, at the Diamond League

meeting in Brussels, said “I am just

like a beast; I just take it out on the

track.”

Blake said that he feels fortunate

to run for an established program like the one at St.

Jago, because it has given him a better chance to

succeed than his parents, Veda and Shirley Blake,

did. “My ultimate goal for the future is to make it in

life, come out to something good so that I can help

my mother and my father and the rest of my family,”

Blake said.

He is a very good cricket player and enjoys playing

as he says it was his first love. The 22 year old also

enjoys a good curry goat meal and would like to

study gynecology as he says he finds the female

body, “fascinating.”

Coach Barrett has had many

memorable games, but the one

that stands out most in his mind

are the 1991 – 1992 season

when the senior team won both

Ardenne High School has been

dominating High school

Basketball for the last couple of

years. The man behind the

magic is Coach Basil Barrett. He

has been coaching basketball

for over twenty five years and

got interested in the game

based on his love for the game.

He has coached at Ardenne

High School for over twenty one

years and stays there because

of his love for his Alma Marta. He

has also been associated with

…the League and Knock-Out finals

The players are by large dedicated to the sport

and are very impressive on and off the court.

He sees Adam Fernandez (now at Southern

Christian Academy in Virginia) as his most

impressive and dedicated player.

Prayer is an integral part of his preparations with

the team as he always encourages them to

pray. He further motivates them by reminding

the team that they are” the best.” In his spare

time, Coach likes to relax at home with his

family. He hopes to one day coach in the College League overseas.
