EDITORIALPakTurk International Schools & Colleges form a galaxy of institutions where vision and approach embrace each other. Today, these institutions present a happy abode of realities where faith predominates and optimism permeates the environment. Here, the commitment is greater, the method is diverse, the manner is pragmatic and the response is energetic. Here a new era of awareness has dawned to usher everyone into a scientifically defined routine, marked by a lot of activities, which never lurches to any set backs by the grace of Allah.

Keeping the traditions alive, this year once again, our students participated in International Olympiads held in US, UK, Brazil, Thailand, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Romania, Turkmenistan, Indonesia, Kenya, Azerbaijan, and Turkey; and brought success for Pakistan. That is the reason we say that “PakTurk is competing with the world for Pakistan”

The previous year has proved to be the most fruit bearing in many aspects. New campuses at Lahore, Karachi, and Peshawar have opened their doors for the students. The construction of another new, purpose built campus in Multan is in full swing, and the educational activities are expected to start by April, 2014. This new campus aims to serve the students from Multan and surrounding areas.

Moreover, in addition to our affiliation with the local boards of Intermediate & Secondary Education and Cambridge International Examinations, now PakTurk is affiliated with Cambridge English Assessment and has been given the status of an authorized centre. From now on, our students from Grade 1 to 12 will be able to take the world-famous language exams at their own schools.

Moreover, in recognition of our excellent educational facilities, solid-and-native curriculum, and a well trained teaching faculty, PakTurk International Schools & Colleges have been awarded the status of “Oxford Quality Schools”. PakTurk is the first and the only school in Pakistan with this prestigious title.

PakTurk belives in joining fun and learning together with real life experiences. Therefore, various opportunities are provided for our students during the summer holidays. This year, the students made their summer vacation even more memorable by joining summer camps in the USA and Turkey. They not only enjoyed a high-class international tour in these countries, but also gained memorable firsthand knowledge of the culture and traditions of these countries.

PATLE – PakTurk Academy of Teaching and Learning Excellence – has also been quite active during the previous year. It organized In-Service Teacher Development (INSTEAD) programs in collaboration with the Oxford University and Cambridge University. PATLE has also organized various Parents School Seminars in different cities to strengthen Home-School partnership.

The abovementioned achievements are only a few of the treasured moments of the PakTurk during the session 2013-14. We wish to see the year 2014 another step towards realization of the dream of “Golden Generation”.

PAKTURK YOUTH BRINGS GOLD MEDAL FROM KAZAKHSTAN

Waleed Bashir of PakTurk Quetta Boys bagged the Grand Winner Award along with a gold medal and cash prize of $600 at the International Infomatrix Asia and

“The honour and the pride belong to my country, Pakistan. They belong to my school and teacher, and to my parents.”

Pacific Computer Competition, held on April 18-21, 2013 in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Waleed designed an automation system that illustrates how to control a greenhouse with only a computer and an Internet connection. With heat, water level, humidity and other factors that are controlled by strategically installed sensors, there is virtually no need for human attendants. The energy required for the functioning of the system is provided by movable solar panels that follow the position of the sun for the best possible energy recovery.

Having vied for glory with 100 projects from 20 countries, Waleed beat out competitors and projects from participating nations, such as Russia, India, Bangladesh, Georgia, Bosnia, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, and Kenya. Waleed’s “Green Automation” project outshined the rest, and brought pride and

distinction to Pakistan and PakTurk educational institutions.

Adding another star to the PakTurk’s galaxy of high achievements in international project competitions, Waleed Bashir has been the second top international project winner hailing from the Quetta Campus of PakTurk educational institutions. Earlier, in 2012, Quetta Campus brought a gold medal to Pakistan from Turkmenistan and a silver medal from Turkey.

Voicing his emotions, Waleed said, “The honour and the pride belong to my country, Pakistan. They belong to my school and teacher, and to my parents. Carrying our flag on an international platform, with dignity and honour, was my dream.”

Infomatrix is an annual international computer project competition which aims at bringing together computer science students across Asia and Pacific region. Although the Infomatrix competitions have been held since 2003, this was the first International Computer Project Olympiad in the string of competitions.

ANOTHER GOLDEN GIFT BY PAKTURK TO THE NATION

Participating in international competitions is not a novelty, but a long-standing tradition at PakTurk. Carrying this tradition forward, a student of PakTurk Karachi Clifton (Boys Campus) bagged glittering success in Biology at the International Young Inventors Project Olympiad (IYIPO), held at Tbilisi, Georgia on April 25-27, 2013. Manzar Abbas from F.Sc-I won a Gold Medal and the Grand Winner award, among 120 projects from 28 countries. As the best of Biology category, he also won a laptop. The IYIPO encourages students around the world to develop projects that can solve environmental issues.

The winning project title was “A New Approach to Purify Seawater”. Manzar Abbas designed a special chamber which he named ‘energy chamber’. The bottom of this chamber is bowl-like and is made up of aluminium metal. The roof of the chamber is doom-shaped and is made up of plastic with a number of converging

lenses with different focal points. These lenses converge the sunlight in the chamber, producing a lot of heat, causing the sea water in the chamber to boil, and converting into steam.

The steam passes through a condenser and condenses the water vapours into liquid form; thus getting distilled water from sea water. Manzar along with his mentor Mr. Abdullah Jan, performed several successful experiments in purifying the sea water in this simple and inexpensive way.

This project may prove to be helpful in solving the problem of the scarcity of water in coastal areas by converting the sea water into drinkable water.

SUMMER School

Education is not the name of regular classes only, but it is much more than this. Picnics, study tours, games, and sports play a vital role in the social upbringing of the students. Keeping in view the importance of these activities, PakTurk International Schools & Colleges organize study and excursion tours, not only inside Pakistan, but also in Turkey, UK and USA.

Summer school in Turkey is a dream of every student for which they wait throughout the year. This tour provides them a chance to further strengthen their Turkish language skills, and get first hand knowledge about Turkish culture.

This year, around 50 students joined the summer camp. After reaching Istanbul, their first destination was Kayseri city where a language camp was organized. Under the supervision of experienced Turkish language teachers, the students sharpened their language skills.

In addition to learning language, the students also enjoyed many activities, such as: games and sports, visits to famous historical places, shopping in the best malls of the city, and movie evenings. Pakistani students were also welcomed by Turkish industrialists and other famous people from different walks of the society.

Visit to Istanbul was a memorable event for the students because this city is famous for its mosques with huge minarets, castles, palaces, gardens, tombs, and shopping malls. Students got a chance to visit famous blue mosque, tomb of Hazrat Abu Ayub al-Ansari, famous panorama museum about conquest of Istanbul, ultra modern theme parks, and shopping centres.

Pakistani youngsters came back after three weeks full of fun and learning. They brought with them many gifts from Turkey for their loved ones; the best among them was indeed the love of Turkish people for Pakistan and Pakistanis.

BRILLIANT STUDENT CHERISHES PAKTURK Muhammad Umar, who is currently studying in the University of Hong Kong has shared his feelings as the following:

The teachers of PakTurk Schools are not only the best professionals but also a permanent source of motivation and encouragement for the students. My teachers always invoked the interest of knowledge inside me and I was always motivated to learn beyond the classroom.

In July 2011, I took part in Olympiad as the youngest participant of our team and made my country proud by securing a Bronze Medal. The credit goes to my teachers who guided me on the right way for my career and helped me throughout my Olympiad preparation.

I completed my A-Levels in just 14 months and scored straight A*s. Another great achievement of mine was that I got distinction in O-Level Chemistry Exam. All these achievements helped me to earn a place with 85% scholarship in “The

University of Hong Kong,” one of the best universities in the world.

I owe my success to my teachers. I would say that my strong academic foundation was laid by PakTurk School, and it is helping me to overcome the challenges with confidence, and to climb up to achieve higher and higher.

My school has planted a tree inside me which will keep bearing the aromatic fruits of achievements and guidance; and the candle of moral values lit up by my school will keep helping me in following the path of righteousness and virtue.

PakTurk Cambridge Support Department Restructured

The process of education at the PakTurk educational institutions aims at equipping the students with both enlightenment of mind and positive personality; thereby helping to develop the sound citizens of society and constructive components of the world community. By the end of 2013, PakTurk restructured its Cambridge support department by appointing Mr. Saeed-ul-Hasan as the Coordinator. PakTurk’s Cambridge Academic Support department organizes continuous professional development programs for the teaching staff. Moreover, curriculum development, assessments, and competitions are also organized under the auspices of the PakTurk CAS.

In recent years, PakTurk students have been performing brilliantly in the Cambridge O and A Level examinations. Here are the views of some of our students:

Hassan Iqbal secured straight A* in 2013 O’Level Examinations

“Getting Admission in PakTurk has been one of the right decisions of my life. The School not only helped me to excel in education, but also polished me up spiritually. PAKTURK also gave me a chance to represent Pakistan on an international level. This organization has become a part of my life and I am proud to be a student here. This is why I opted to stay here in college when I could have gone anywhere else.”

Shaffan Afzal got subject distinction in Principles of Accounts at Lahore City Level“Joining PakTurk proved to be a turning point of my life. The teaching methodology, used by the institution, not only helped me excelling in studies, but also improved my interpersonal skills. From a shy boy of O’Level I have been transformed into a self-confident human being.”

Sannia Nasir who secured 8A* in CIE O’Level Exams 2014“Topping among all the PakTurk branches by attaining 8 A*s and 1 A in Cambridge International O level 2013, was a great honor for me. The dedication of my teachers, the faith of my parents, and the encouragement by my institution played a major role in this achievement. The source of my inspiration was a Quranic verse “ If Allah helps you then none can overcome you and if He forsakes you, who is after you to help you?” So at the end its your hard work, your belief in Allah, and your institution which enables you to land among the stars.”
