Members have been made aware of AECT/DSMS functions, services, news and other pertinent information through the publication, Update, the Newsletter of DSMS. 9 To continue to increase the membership of DSMS by five-25 percent. The membership stands at an all time high of 907 members, with only 93 to go to stand tall and proud at 1,000. President's Message...

T he goals of the Division of School Media Spe- cialists for the 1991-92 year of office were all derived with the year s motto in mind, Link-

ing Excellence in Education. The division goals should certainly improve individual standards through more awareness and participation thus im- proving excellence at the local site. The goals are not new but rather a continuous effort in directions to strengthen DSMS within AECT. Those goals which we continually work toward are as follows:

9 A continuous effort to increase visibility as a via- ble division, through communication to potential members of the various services available through AECT and DSMS.

Urge your colleagues to become members and join in "Linking Excellence in Education."

9 To continue to be sensitive to membership needs and to address the identified needs. As a Board, we continuously seek feedback from members as to what is right and what is wrong. We may not always be able to fix it, but we want to know and will attempt to find a solution.

9 A demonstration of leadership through the solici- tation and selection of quality conference pro- gramming. All members are encouraged to sub- mit a program proposal. Because of the diversity of membership in DSMS, we are very fortunate to have University Faculty who can help us with our site based programs and the University Fac- ulty are fortunate to have school people who can make them cognizant of the various situations. It

is through such a network of interchange that we all grow stronger.

To continuously upgrade, modify, design, orga- nize and implement policy development for DSMS governance. Because DSMS is only ten years old, we constantly strive to tie loose ends together to become a stronger more responsive goveming group. A long range planning process has been diligently planned and implemented and the results of that process are awaiting to be im- plemented, which may well modify the design of activities.

To continue to interact cooperatively with other divisions of AECT for expanded and improved activities. DSMS and other divisions have worked cooperatively on Programming and other activities. DSMS and DEMM have worked on the 3M-AECT Media Specialist of the Year Award for two consecutive years. The 1991 win- ner was Jan Jensen, Arvada High School, Ar- vada, Colorado. The 1992 recipient will be an- nounced in early February.

To work cooperatively with other professional as- sociations for information exchange concerning National Goals for Education. No exchange has transpired conceming the National Goals for Edu- cation, however, we have worked to make our members cognizant of the goals, so that individu- ally at the work site, the goals are known.

To continue research reporting of the state-of-the- art technology, curriculum development with media implementation and all aspects of media in education at all levels of education. A process of development is still under design study. We have found that Media Specialists are very shy in re- porting or sharing any research activities. vite all of you to share your research with mem- bers via the Update.

A review of the 1991-92 goals for DSMS is a friendly reminder that there is a lot of work for all of us to do. If you are not involved and want to be involved, please do not hesitate to write or call any and/or all Board Members. Display your profession- alism through membership and active participation in the Division for School Media Specialists.

The Board is a terrific group of hard working, conscientious educators with an expertise in media. The Chairs and their committees have worked very hard for the membership. A very personal, public "thank you" to each is extended from me. I truly ap- preciate all they have done.

~ n this issue you will find four articles covering a variety of engaging topics. Glenn Crossley, an outstanding sixth grade

teacher at Boyertown Elementary School in Pennsyl- vania examines the various "hyper" Apple II soft- ware programs. In particular, he focuses on the soft- ware, "HyperStudio." His interest in this software led to the development of a program using it. Utiliz- ing graphics, sound and text, his application intro- duces new students to the Boyertown Elementary staff, facilities and curriculum. Contact Glenn for additional information at 120 N. Reading Ave., Boyertown, PA 19512; phone 215-367-5118.

Jack Bennett and Frank Brocato wrote the inter- esting article, "The Budgetary Role of the Media Specialist in the Restructured School." In the arti- cle, the authors describe the expanded role of the school media specialist as a result of restructuring and declining school dollars. They propose that the building media specialist is in the best position to serve as the instructional budget coordinator. What

tasks does the instructional budget coordinator per- form? Read the article to find out.

Judith Meyers, in her article "What's New With the News," describes the latest developments in the news from television to CD-ROM publish- ing. In this very well-written article, Judith reviews a variety of special programs and new technologies related to the news industry.

Frances Jacobson explores the growing field of CD-ROM publishing, particularly CD-ROM ency- clopedias. The author believes that the electronic en- cyclopedia offers users an array of features found only in CD-ROM format. In addition, the medium will continue to improve as long as the producer keeps the user behavior in mind. Thanks to the American Library Association for permission to re- print this article that is chock-full of timely informa- tion.

This issue of School Learning Resources con- tains a plethora of exciting new ideas certain to "whet the appetite" of all DSMS members.
