As the Eucharist unites us as one Body in Christ, may we faithfully live and share the Gospel. A medida que la Eucaristía nos une como un solo Cuerpo en Cristo, vivamos y anunciemos fielmente el Evangelio.

-Fr. William Dotson

From the Pastor’s Column / Noticias del Párroco

5200 Glennon Dr. St. Louis 63119

Come and get to see the seminary! Sunday Feb.24th from 1 to 3pm Come and get a guided tour of the seminary, you will get to walk into the classrooms, library, dorms, halls and chapels of the seminary. Learn how it is to live as a future priest. Get to know some seminarians, life in the seminary and pray in the St Joseph Chapel. All are welcome! 5200 Glennon Dr. St. Louis 63119

Vocation Chalice! Starting on March 10th, with the help of the Serra Club of the Saint Charles Deanery our parish will participate in this program to help cultivate an increased awareness of God’s plan for our lives and help cultivate a positive environment to foster future vocations within the Archdiocese of St. Lou-is. Each week, parishioners that have chosen to participate, will receive the chalice, which is mounted in a glass and wooden frame box, and the binder of daily vocation pray-ers. The family will take the chalice, as a symbol of the priesthood, to their home and display it in a prominent place for all to see throughout the week. Each day for seven days the family will gather together to pray for vocations guided by the use of the prayer binder. During this time parents can explain and prompt young children and teenag-ers to consider how God is calling them into a deeper rela-tionship with Him. We trust through this program God will grant many blessings to our parish families. It is a great op-portunity to pray together for such an important issue. We encourage ALL families to sign up to participate in this pro-gram.

We regularly hear about the importance of prayer, but many of us were never really taught how to pray. This Lent, Fr. Dotson will be offering a four-part School of Prayer to help parishioners grow in their experience of prayer. Whether prayer is already a regular part of your life or you are a beginner, this School of Prayer will be an opportunity to grow in your relationship with God through prayer. All meet-ings will be in both English and Spanish. The meetings will be at 6:30pm in the Cafeteria on March 14, 21, 28, and April 4. The School of Prayer is completely free, but it will be helpful if you RSVP to Fr. Dotson so we know how many people to expect.

Year-end 2018 Update on Activities of St. Charles Borromeo St. Vincent de Paul Society

As we begin a new year, we thought you might like to see how your generous donations to the Socie-ty of St. Vincent de Paul have been used within the St Charles Borromeo Community during 2018. Through your help, we were able to provide utility, rent, food, clothing, prescription, car repairs, fur-niture assistance and other needs to 465 families (1,066 people). Among these, we were able to pro-vide temporary lodging to 63 homeless families and provide 39 Beds for individuals in need. The breakdown of our financial support is as follows: Total Income (collections, donations, memorials, support from other organizations, etc): $126,084 Total Expense: $122,449 We are pleased to report that $6000 of our expenses went to support Birthright of St. Charles in the fine work they do in advocating for life. In addition, we were able to provide assistance to our clients worth almost $5,000 through the redemption of credits earned from the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store. These credits were earned from contributions to the Thrift Store from the Mini Vinnies Household Goods Drive and a donation of credits from St. Joseph’s of Cottleville. Our Holiday programs provided food and gifts to many more families:

No Hunger Holiday (Thanksgiving meals) assisted 80 families and more than 234 individuals Giving Tree (Christmas) provided food and gifts to 71 families and 298 individuals

At the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen, St. Vincent de Paul members dedicated almost 1,213 hours and served more than 4,070 meals to the hungry during 2018. We partner with other agencies within St. Charles who provide additional and different assistance: United Way, NECAC, Catholic Charities, Sts. Joachim & Ann Care Services and other local churches. We made dozens of referrals to the FISH and O.A.S.I.S food pantries.

Our Mini Vinnies continued to provide special value and additional assistance to the community throughout the year. These are just some of the more notable activities:

Sponsored and packed 50 backpacks per week for underserved students Prepared menus, purchased food, prepared and served approx. 492 meals at the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen 48 Mini Vinnies participated in Freezin’ for a Reason Collected sunscreens, lip balms, bug sprays; purchased tents, sleeping bags and backpacks for distribution by Sts. J&A

Outreach Program Helped with the Ladies Sodality Holiday Tea; over $2100 raised for Holy Angels Shelter Conducted Go Orange Food Drive Hosted Halloween Party for Crisis Nursery Assisted at No Hunger Holiday food distribution Adopted and shopped for 7 children from Giving Tree Assisted with wrapping, gift sorting and gift distribution for this year’s Giving Tree

Remember, all of your contributions are spent right here in our community, helping our neighbors and friends through difficult times or assisting those who can use a hand up. Our operating expenses were just over $2,000 for the year, so almost every dollar was used in support of our mission to serve the poor and underprivileged. We cannot thank you enough for your continued support. If not for you, we could not do any of the work we find so challenging and fulfilling. If you are interested in learning more about St. Vincent de Paul or in joining, please contact Sandra Van Mill at 314-753-7051

Recently received from St. Vincent de Paul

Recently someone called our St. Vincent de Paul helpline requesting assistance with rent. She informed us that last year she was the victim of domestic violence and was physically assaulted which required a stay in the hospital. Still recovering from those injuries and also another illness, she has not been able to work for sometime.

Given the severity of this case, we collaborated with the Northwest District Council of SVD and paid one month’s rent on her mobile home. Realizing that she would need longer term help, we also referred her to another agency which could provide further support. After explaining that we would be paying her past due rent of one month, she tearfully expressed her sincere grati-tude to us and asked that we thank everyone at St. Charles Borromeo. Thank you SCB....your generosity does not go unrewarded.

Today's gospel reading is a continuation of the teaching that began in last Sunday's gospel. We continue to hear Jesus' Sermon on the Plain. Recall that in Luke's Gospel, this teaching is addressed to Jesus' disciples. This is in contrast to the parallel found in Matthew's Gospel, the Sermon on the Mount, in which Jesus' words are ad-dressed to both the disciples and to the crowds.

These words from Jesus' teaching are familiar to us. They constitute the crux and the challenge of what it means to be a disciple: Love your enemies, turn the other cheek, give to those who ask, do unto others, lend without ex-pecting repayment, judge not lest you be judged.

There are several similarities between Luke's and Mat-thew's report of Jesus' great teaching. Both begin with the Beatitudes. Matthew includes nearly all the content that Luke does; the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew's Gospel is longer than Luke's Sermon on the Plain. There are, however, differences in language and nuance. For example, Matthew presents this portion of the teaching as a contrast between Jesus' teaching and the teachings of the law and the prophets. This is in keeping with Matthew's concern to address his predominantly Jewish audience. It is likely that Luke omits this contrast because it was un-necessary for the Gentile believers for whom Luke is writ-ing.

Another point of contrast between Matthew and Luke's presentation is the terminology. In Luke, Jesus contrasts the behavior of his followers with the behavior of “sinners.” In Matthew, Jesus contrasts the behavior de-sired with the behavior of tax collectors and Gentiles. Matthew concludes the teaching about love of enemies with the admonition to be perfect as God is perfect; Luke concludes by emphasizing God's mercy.

In both Gospels, Jesus' words challenge those who would follow him to be more like God. God loves us beyond our expectations, beyond anything we can possibly imagine. In response to God's love, we are to love as God loves, beyond expectations and with a depth beyond imagining.
