Winter 2011 Aloha Greetings to Everyone! I can’t believe how quickly the time has sped by since camp ended in August! And everyday since then I have been thinking about camp! This fall, I traveled to different parts of the country to show pictures of the summer and tell the story of Aloha. Like any great story, Aloha is rich in scenery, plot and characters. Frequently I have wondered, if you were going to tell ”the story” what would it include? Would it be about our fantastic program departments where you can work on a potters wheel, go for the bullseye, learn your J-stroke, shoot an optical illusion picture, skipper a Sunfish, be in The Show, run around the lake, bike the trails, cook a snack in the Woodchuck Hole fireplace, compete in a tennis tournament, float around on innertubes at the waterfront, row the crew shell in the morning mist, master your kayak roll, split wood, or so many other things. Or maybe you’d focus on the trips and the amazing sense of accomplishment you feel by being out in the wilderness and really needing to work together as a group to reach the summit, set up your campsite, or paddle against the wind. Maybe you’d mention some of the fun special events at camp… the Fourth of July parade, bonfire, and fireworks; MJ’s Mayhem, Counselor Cabaret, Pancake Breakfast, Unit Specials, or Sundae Night. Perhaps you’d share the special times in camp that touch us so deeply ~ Wishing Fire, Wedding Ring, Nightlights, Rainbow Chapel, Puzzle Pieces, Candlelight, the Name Boards at Banquet, Sunday nights on Winships, and Evening Circle. I believe that even if your story includes all of these things, the most important part of the story would be about the people. This may be the most challenging part of the story to put into words. It’s so hard to describe how close you get to your friends and counselors in such a short time. It may feel like you have known them all of your life. That’s probably because they have seen you through both your high and low moments at camp, and they know the real you. You may even be thinking about those lifelong friends right now. And of course one person that your story would most certainly include is yourself. I hope that story is one of pride and excitement for all you have done at camp and most importantly for becoming the person you want to be in this world. Sometimes it’s hard work, but I hope Aloha is a place where you discover and become your best self. Aloha is truly a wonderful story of being in love with your life. Winter 2011

Aloha Greetings to Everyone!

This

may be the most challenging part of the story to put into words.

Join us in 2011 for the next chapter of a Best Summer Ever!Aloha!

Aloha 2010 was amazingly incredibly fantastically awesome! All my friends are impressed that I can swim five miles without stopping. Whenever I’m sitting in math class I wish I was actually singing in Performing Arts. “Hanging out on Waikiki” always pops into my head when I hear “Underneath the palm trees” on the radio. Next summer I plan to get my first kayaking rank! Sarah Gavis-Hughson

If I were by Lake Morey right now I would be laughing with friends. My puzzle piece/tie/pin/banquet book sits on display on my bed side table for all to see. My parents love that I learned how to make friends and love myself. Whenever I eat school food (ewww) I wish I was eating Sunday turkey, potatoes, and ice cream instead. Summer 2011 I will be full of missing Camp Aloha :(Molly Brennan

I always get “Charlie and the MTA” stuck in my head when I shower because I really just want to SING IT OUT!! It was three months before I lost my shorts tan line. (AND I WANT IT BACK!) I still have some of my watch tan, it’s holding on by a thread. :) School has been fun, stressful, annoying, too much work but alright I guess, but I wish I was in my tent with Ellen Babbott and Magg telling stories and laughing until I pee myself. The silliest camp thing I do at home is sing at meals, though sometimes I get funny looks from other non-camp goers. June 29th will be THE HIGHLIGHT OF MY YEAR!!!!!! C’11 HERE I COME!!!!!!!xoxoxo Joanie Oates

Aloha 2010 was amazing and better than I thought it would ever be. All my friends are impressed that I can start a fire, lead a group activity, and kayak. Whenever I’m sitting in CALC OR APEURO I wish I was actually ANYWHERE AT CAMP DOING ANYTHING CAMP RELATED!! Awkward dancing always pops into my head when I hear Lady Gaga on the radio. Next summer I plan to have even more fun then last summer. Aloha, sholmes

Q. Have you heard the joke about the butter?A. I better not tell you, it might spread.

I always get the “Gulicking Up” song stuck in my head when I’m trying to study. It was 2 1/2 months before I lost my watch tan line. (AND I WANT IT BACK!) School has been exciting, long, boring, fun but I wish it was more like camp. The silliest camp thing I do at home is sing camp song to my friends. June 29th will be the best day of summer.Natalie Smith

If I were by Lake Morey right now I would sing camp songs VERY loudly. My tie sits on display on my white bulletin board for all to see. My parents love that I learned how to laugh loudly and capsize a sailboat. Whenever I eat a sandwich I wish I was eating GRILLED CHEESE and TOMATO SOUP instead. Summer 2011 I will be travelling to Nicaragua in green shorts. Madison Farley

Aloha 2010 was so fun it rocked-my-socks-off. All my friends are impressed that I can tie a bowline one handed. Whenever I’m sitting in Latin I wish I was actually telling jokes at mealtime. I miss camp friends always pops into my head when I hear pollywog in a bog on the radio. Next summer I plan to get my Vagabond and Ensign B.Amelia Huang

I always get “It’s a Pleasure to Know You” stuck in my head when I’m taking a walk. It was two weeks before I lost my shorts tan. (I really want it back) School has been one new, exhausting, and fun challenge but I wish to be at camp :) The silliest camp thing I do at home is sing many camp songs really loud. June 29th I will be sitting on Lake Morey’s shore.Jayne O’Dwyer

Q. What do you get when you cross a stream and a brook?A. Wet feet.

Alohafrom our Assistant Director

Hello Aloha 2010! I can’t believe how quickly the months have passed since we all left Fairlee – talk about crazy. Of course, if you ask Johnston, he can tell you exactly how many days have gone by since the summer session ended, and exactly how many more remain until the start of 2011 – and he’s not even watching any of the Facebook countdowns. And if you ask Hayes…he’ll just smile and repeat whatever Johnston has said. Of course.

The last couple of months have been camptacular for us, with lots of Aloha visitors swinging through to say hi. I feel like the fun of the summer just keeps going! When I’m not pining away for summer breezes on Lake Morey, I am working very, very hard. For those of you who didn’t know, my husband and I started running our own business this fall, and it’s been an exciting, exhilarating, relentless and utterly amazing ride. Essentially, we work in the health care field, and without boring you with too many details, I can tell you that I bring camp into the workplace just as often as I can, from playing get-to-know-you games with new employees, to randomly bursting into camp songs at the drop of a hat. Sometimes I wonder if the people around me think I’m not quite all there…

I love what I am doing helping people – I love the fast pace, the constant curve balls, the thrill that comes with new assignments, and I love the care and the compassion I see every day, and the commitment from the people with whom I work to truly make a difference in the lives of their patients. And…I think of camp so often that sometimes I find myself aching inside.

With all of the support, friendship, growth and learning that I have from last summer spurring me forward into this new adventure, I feel so ridiculously in love with my life that I just can’t believe I’m lucky enough to be

me. Which probably sounds like silly a “Gordo-ism,” and yet it’s totally true. I know that I have Aloha to thank for so much of the confidence, commitment and integrity that are carrying me through this amazing new experience, and I can’t wait to tell you all about it.

If anyone is swinging through Boston anytime, please stop in to see us. We would love to spend some time with you…and Johnston would love to memorize your phone number.

We send hugs, love, and armfuls of Aloha magic to all,XOXO Gordo, Johnston, and Hayes

Greetingsfrom your ALOHA Unit Heads

“And where would Pines like to meet…” (loud clap and the 40 human pine trees shoot up from the dining hall tables)

Greetings from above the Pacific Ocean. I am currently flying to Sydney to start my semester abroad at the University of Wollongong. Although I am unbelievably excited for the semester, I can’t stop thinking of Aloha as I embark on this new

adventure.

Pines 2010 was a summer I will never forget, filled with camouflage behind our jinx, sing-alongs before tattoo, and tying human pigs up

while down on the farm. Since I’m not very good at writing these things I thought I would write you a poem:

After reading my little poem I must say that it is a very good thing that I am a Biochemistry major and not English. I was hoping the plane would bring some inspiration but I think my lack of sleep is getting to me. I miss you all and cannot tell you how much I loved last summer. It was one of the best summers EVER!

Remember your Aloha self and bring it with you wherever you go. Go and do something amazing today!Cheers,Magg

There once was a unit called Pines,A circle of tents all covered in vines. It used to have a brand new Jinx,But now I think our jinx just stinks (literally).

With its campers I was truly obsessed,And with my counselors I was absolutely blessed.

To wake to all your shining faces Sent my heart off to the races.

You each became a brand new friend,And from the Pacific my love I send.

Last summer ended without any strife,And when it was over, I was in love with my life.

OH’10!Still in Love with Your Life?Aloha from 10,152 feet above Lake Morey! Leadville, CO is a balmy -32 degrees today and I find myself day-dreaming of those warm days on the Old Hideaway hillside. I dream of playing Dead Worm on the tennis court, eating scrambled brownies by the giant spoonful, sweeping innumerable spiders out of the tents, running the high seas as Pippi Longstocking, making s’mores over a tiny candle flame and chilling in the hammock behind the shack.

Once I finish dreaming about these amazing memories I stop and think about my present life. I am living at the base of the highest peak in Colorado, skiing in 7+ feet of powder, baking cookies as often as possible, visiting new cities every week, staying in touch with my Aloha friends and making new ones all the time. Sure, it’s a little cold this week and I don’t have a hammock but am I still “In Love with My Life?” I am, with 100% confidence.

Realizing this, I am able to look ahead to Summer 2011 and think about what I will accomplish to make it the best summer ever and to stay “In Love with My Life.” I have discovered that having a personal goal really allows me to grow in a concrete manner, which allows for a feeling of great accomplishment. Besides my typical climbing on fire trucks, racing with the “Inflatables Department,” ensuring that all the Sunday dessert bowls have the exact same amount of ice cream and avoiding murder plots from my fellow counselors, what will I do?

I think I figured it out, but I need all your help in making sure I actually accomplish this goal. Over the years at Aloha I have rowed around the lake, kayaked around the lake, canoed around the lake, biked around the lake, walked around the lake, swum around the lake, but I have never (ever!) run around Lake Morey. For me, it

seems an insurmountable goal with hills, heat and pavement obstructing my path. This year, I will do it. But that’s not all. I will do it and I will enjoy it. If I run it and am unhappy, what’s the point? I strive to “Be In Love With My Life” all the time, and that is going to carry over to my goals for Summer 2011.

Now, it’s your turn: Are you Still in Love with Your Life? What are your goals for Aloha 2011? How can I help you accomplish them? Keep in touch, I want to hear your answers!Eliza “ParPar” Parsons Page 8

Aloha XRX!• SUMMER IS MEANT TO BE SUNNY: but right now in Australia we’ve had floods, cyclones, bushfires,

and only a little sun.*• SUMMER IS FOR WEARING GREEN SHORTS: but I’ve been wearing business casual, and usually with

a scarf because it’s cold inside the office and out. • SUMMER IS FOR TANNING**: ok, so everyone knows I don’t really tan. But I did manage to build up a

bit of a watch tan last summer, and I’m missing it right now…• SUMMER IS MEANT TO BE HOT: but we have had pretty mediocre temperatures in Tasmania. Right

now I’d love one of those days it was so hot that even sitting outside the Art Barn doing nothing was tiring. Or a day where we had to cancel activities and just sit in the Lake? Bring it on!!

• SUMMER IS FOR SINGING: Silly songs. Songs about french toast. Songs about how Camp Aloha girls are unforgettable.*** Or just endless renditions of “The Lion King” from your tent. Actually sometimes I do that anyway, there’s just no tent involved. I also find myself humming “I’d like to stay in Crossrooooooads…”

• SUMMER IS FOR SCREAMING RIDICULOUS THINGS: like “WHEELS!”. That nobody really understands. Even the people screaming it. I dare you all to do it sometime this week…

• SUMMER IS FOR CRUTCHES: actually, that’s one thing I DON’T miss about last summer. I’m telling you, using crutches on a hill and being pushed around in a garden cart… not as fun as it looks!****

• SUMMER IS FOR FRIENDS: who will run around in their underwear, play endless name games, think a Job Fair is cool, and help you to ‘be in love with your life’!

• SUMMER IS FOREVER: well, it has been in my life – my last winter was in 2006! But I’m about to break that streak and head back to 05045 to work for Hulbert (the Aloha Foundation’s outdoor education centre) with their School Programs. It’s going to be exciting and challenging and a new adventure, and I’m TERRIFIED about learning to live in all that snow and cold!

So by the time you read this, I’ll be tanning freezing by Lake Morey, so if any of you are visiting Vermont and doing one of those let’s-just-drive-by-Aloha-to-see-what-it-looks-like trips***** make sure you stop in to the Farmhouse and say HI to me!

SUMMER IS FOR ALOHA: so I expect to see you all again in 2011! Shout-outs to Pengu, Telly & Arnold, and to all friends of “Dev”!xxErin

* the worst that’s happened in my corner is that our mailbox was flooded the day my Aloha calendar arrived… so sad!

** as long as you’re wearing sunscreen…*** I’m not kidding, it just came on the radio as I was

writing this!**** actually the garden cart bit was kinda fun…***** we all know you do it…

Page 10

Aloha Seventh Heaven 2010!This letter has taken me quite a quite a while to put together, mostly because I’ve been tremendously busy in the months since camp ended. You see, after our epic Fiesta del Fuego (don’t you wish we had thought of that name during the summer?!) I knew that my life passions had been changed and I really had no other option but to become a firefighter! So I joined my local fire department and have been simply swamped with trainings and working at fire scenes. Uh oh! There goes my pager now! Gotta run…! Ok ok… so maybe I’m not a firefighter… But it does

sound pretty exciting right? All for the best though, since what I am actually doing has me incredibly happy and absolutely loving my life! Very soon after camp ended I was called to interview, and then hired, as an Admissions Counselor at the college that I graduated from in May. That’s right folks, I’m still a counselor! You know those applications and essays that you spend your senior year of high school writing? My job is to read them! I interview potential students, tell them about my school, give tours of campus, and generally help to find out which students will be the best fit for us. The best part? I spend a good chunk of the fall semester travelling around New York and Vermont visiting high schools and setting up shop at college fairs. While living in a different hotel nearly every night for 2+ months can get pretty lonely, it gives me lots of time to see friends from all over! Chinese food with Pascale Stain and then pizza with J. McFadden, Katie Sherer, my parents, and Nancy Pennell seem to be sticking out in my mind at the moment. I love helping students to figure out where their passions lie, and working with them to find out if my college is the place where they will be able to be successful and follow those passions through. I love it! (Also, my desk is in a small room with three other counselors and we have Nerf guns… it’s pretty exciting stuff!)

Other than working, I’m settling into “The Real World” as it is so deceivingly called. But I find myself wondering… Why is working a 9-5 desk job, managing my finances, and negotiating the worlds of medical/dental/vision insurance any more “real” than laying on my bed in my tent after taps listening to the crickets, or contra-dancing in the mud on the volleyball court, or biking around the lake (or across the state!), or screaming a very satisfying “ALLOOOOOOOOOOO-HA!” after a hike up the bluff? Well, you know what I’m coming to learn? I’m learning that life, “real” life, simply means being where you are, doing what you’re doing, and loving it. Of course, that doesn’t mean things are always going to go well, or that you will always be happy every moment. But it’s your life to live and love. So get out there and be in love with your life!

I miss you all and I think of our summer together all the time! Next time there is a good sunset, Laurel and I will meet you all on the Sev Hev hill with a really big blanket and a guitar… See you there!AshleyPS, Duncan says hi!

Aloha CLUB!!! Lessons from the Real WorldElizabeth Cohen

1. White collared shirts don’t look as good without green ties.2. Asking someone if they would like to pick some daisies with you is weird. It’s

weirder when you explain what it means.3. People don’t like when I stand up and make announcements in the middle of their

meals.4. My friends bake cakes in electric ovens, not dutch ones! Even my Dutch friends!5. It’s harder to convince people to dress up as raggedy little boys and follow you for an entire mile down a

two lane road in Philadelphia than it is in Fairlee.6. When you light a four story building on fire, the fire department generally shows up. If shirtless chanting

boys showed up, I’m not quite sure what would happen.7. In contrast, the fire department rarely shows up when you tell them you are having a party. Or French

toast.8. Telling someone you can “do a hand roll” makes them think you’re going to make them some sushi. 9. When people speak, they rarely project. 10. People with broken ankles don’t a) live on hills or b) travel by wheelbarrow.11. The audience at Open Mike Night in Philadelphia didn’t really understand my green, toga-clad self

singing a song about toast while throwing old bread at them. But, then again, I suppose neither did the audience at Aloha…

12. The winner of the Australian Open did not attend a giant banquet in his honor adorned in a ceremonial sweatband. Or, really, maybe he did.

13. At the end of CBS’s version of The Amazing Race, no one got in a tent all together. In a building. In the rain. Lame.

14. A linchpin is something that prevents a wheel from falling off. 15. The New York Times reports a resurgence in the dodo population thanks to Club X and 2009’s Dodo Egg

Most workplaces do not require a green tie for dinner. 20. If you accidentally wear a nametag out in public, people you don’t know will use your name!21. Mean people are rarely celebrated.22. Club 2010 taught me a lot about how to be supportive, creative, completely ridiculous, and absolutely in

love with my life. So I’ll probably never learn any of these lessons. Oh well.

Page 12

Dear Aloha 2010,I have found a sunny spot on the floor from which to write this, but it’s not nearly as warm as sitting in the summer sun at Aloha. In fact, things are a lot more cushy for me at camp. I miss Aloha!

I’ve thought a lot about what makes Aloha such a special place, and here’s how I see it. I am a relatively large, clumsy dog who drools excessively, can be rather skittish and is incredibly motivated by food. At Aloha, no one seems to mind those less than appealing traits. People are welcoming. It’s a place where everyone knows my name. I am greeted with a smile by everyone I meet and people speak to me in resoundingly happy voices. At home, I have to wake everyone up in the morning in order to be fed, but at camp, that wonderful noise occurs at the same time every morning, nice and early, and then I am fed. In fact, some days I am fed breakfast a second time by those two adorable boys, Johnston and Hayes, who squeal with joy when they see me each morning and smile all the time. Johnston also describes his mornings in terms of how many dogs he’s seen – such as a “two dog morning” – he makes me feel special. Johnston even knows my birthday, and he keeps track of how old I am. I get slightly confused by the “people” years and “dog” years system, so I am delighted that he is paying attention. Hayes feeds me treats all day long (although we will both deny that), and he likes to snuggle on my bed with me and keep me company.

You see,I don’t really like to be alone. You may be aware of that – I tend to bark when I’m left by myself, even for short periods of time. At Aloha, though, I don’t ever really feel alone. I just have to stand up and look out that huge window to see Sherry, Di and anyone else that might be visiting. If I bark enough, MJ and Sarah will check on me too. At camp I have so many friends. The guy in the bright orange hat, Nick, takes me for walks and he has even helped me out of some rather precarious situations. I thought the skunk would want to be my friend, but it turns out that skunks are not as friendly as Aloha campers and counselors. Marina stopped by almost daily for our 12:00 jaunts, to which I so looked forward. Visitors would stop by all day long to be sure that I wasn’t alone. When Grace needed some time alone, she would snap on my leash and away we’d go to Glens Falls. It’s funny how we both got what we needed on those walks. I enjoyed her company while she had time for reflection.

One of my closest friends at camp is actually a person who didn’t really seem to like me so much at first. Slowly, though, she started talking to me when no one else was around, then she started feeding me treats. The moment I knew we were really friends, however, was the day I jumped out of the office window to find out where Courtney had gone. I didn’t take into account the metal roof, which happened to be rather slippery. Before I knew it, Liza jumped out of the window after me and saved my life, risking her own. Liza, a longtime camper and counselor extraordinaire, got us back into the office without injury, though I am still not sure how. Camp is full of so many wonderful people and events, events that I often miss while sleeping in the office, but I do understand what makes Aloha so special. People know your name, they celebrate your uniqueness and they ignore some of your less appealing traits, they say hello, they keep you company when you feel lonely, they laugh with you, they are silent in your presence when you just need to know they are there, and they would jump out of their comfort zone for you. I miss Aloha and all of you. Can’t wait to see you in June!

Greetings from Montana! Don’t say a word about my shirt. It’s Aloha in spirit! That is what happens when you move across country with bulky ski gear; you have no room for summer clothes like t-shirts. After camp this summer I spent a few more months in Vermont, and then packed my car and drove west with a good friend to spend a third winter in Big Sky, Montana, teaching skiing. It is so beautiful here!

Who likes my new axe?! Just trying to keep my house warm out here in Big Sky. We are living in a rustic cabin that is heated with a wood stove, so all the wood chopping this summer is coming in handy. For $6.25 you can buy a permit to cut trees in the National Forests around here so we gather the “wood in the woods” and even have our own chopping ring. Every time I make a fire in the stove, which is nearly every night, I think of the fire station for the Amazing Race, it poured rain, and every group was still able to get their fire going. You go Clubbers!

It is a Woodchuck’s paradise out here! Huge mountains, wild animals everywhere including, Elk, Bighorn Sheep, Ermine, Coyotes, Bald Eagles, and Moose, lots of outdoorsy people and spectacular views. If you ever get the chance, take a trip to Montana, you’ll love it, and if you are a skier you have to checkout Moonlight Basin, the resort I am working for, the skiing is awesome.

I hope that everyone is keeping a little part of camp alive at home, whether it is making s’mores in the microwave instead of over a campfire, humming C-A-M-P as you ride in a car imagining you are returning from a trip, or just taking a moment to breathe deeply and think of those warm Lake Morey breezes. Remember, summer is never too far away!SisterbearWOODCHUCK HOLE

Ahoy Aloha Canoers!,John McFadden is TOTALLY in LOVE with his life. Work has been going well, I’m making decisions to do fun things with my non work time, sharing it with friends and expanding my circle of friends to do more fun things. Now that I’ve done that, not only do I enjoy the moment that I’m in; I look forward to the future, like Aloha 2011!!!

And what a great winter we’re having. How’s that? you may ask, it’s been freezing and dumping snow for months. Exactly! With a good solid snow pack in the Green Mountains there will be plenty of water in the White River this summer for some local white water canoeing! I can’t wait. The White River has some outstanding rapids within easy reach making for some outstanding day trips. Last summer the water was a little low, which limited the trips we took there. This summer I hope to head there early and often. It’s not just white water I think about in the winter. When ever I snow shoe around in the woods I am reminded of the quiet of the Rangeley Lakes and the Adirondacks. I can’t wait to get everybody back on the water and enjoying their skills as they paddle and camp in some of the most beautiful country I know of. Only 107 days (as of 3/1/11) to go!JohnCANOEING

Dear Little Swimmies,As I sit here bundled up for my second snow day of the week (and fifth of the year) I cannot help but think about how my life would be different if this snow was really water, and I could go swimming in it. While there are many things I miss about camp, one thing that really tops my list (besides rest hour... all jobs should have rest hour) is watching so many of you conquer your fears, test your limits, and achieve your many goals. Maybe it was passing your swim check, or really laying it out in a game of “Live it, Love it, Lay it out. Maybe you swam across the lake, or even around the lake, when you didn’t think you could. Maybe you dove for treasure, or learned how to dive off the board. Or maybe you were just trying to sneak in some sun bathing time. (Man do I miss my tan...) Any one of these accomplishments is something that I am so proud to say I was a part of in 2010. Let’s keep swimming (Just keep swimming...) in 2011! Aloha to my Dolphins, Otters, Seals, Penguins, Mermaids, Seamonkeys, and sneaky sun bathers,Melissa (Lissy) McMeanieSWIMMING Page 14

THE SOUND OF KAYAKERS (to the tune of the sound of music..)

Splash, a sound, a paddle makesRoll, how only Liza canBones, a name you don’t know whySkirt, to keep you nice and dryDean, go chase the geese awayZoar, your dam did not releaseLaugh, it’s what we did the best! That will bring us back to splash, splash, splash....

Okay so it may not be as good as our Lady Gaga medley remix (on the andro, on the andro etc) but I tried (Rachel helped) and I didn’t have AMK’s musical talents to help me this time. Who misses kayaking???? Me!!! and hopefully all of you!!! Every now and then some silly moment from kayaking will pop right into my head out of the blue. Whether it was the beautiful morning we got up to kayak round the lake at 6 am, the last day of Zoar where we carved up that last rapid like no others, sing-alongs in the van, eating too much cheese on trail lunches, our silly and petrifying run-across-the-kayaks game, throwing Holmes and Carrie into the lake, perfecting the art of trailer packing or all of you just laughing at my NZ accent (which by the way Canadians find far more difficult to understand than Americans - I had to spell the word bread for them to understand me!). What moment pops into your head? Whatever one it is I hope it makes you laugh out loud in the middle of whatever you’re doing and people around you look at you like you’re a little strange. They just don’t know!

I haven’t been able to get any kayaking done yet (it’s pretty cold up here in Canada) but I’m working on it and have found a beautiful place called Deep Cove that I will be off to explore before my time runs out here. Can’t wait to create a million more memories in the Summer of 2011. BonesKAYAKING

Aloha from the Crew Department! While Lake Morey is currently frozen solid (seriously, I saw a plane on it last week) I am still thinking about the sounds of catching water, the squeak of the slides and the undependable roar of the motorboat. These sounds are always a light rumble in the back of my head right below the current pop songs, the sound of my boss’ voice and the din of coffee shops. To this day I have not found anything as peaceful and rewarding as flying across the flat water in sync with my best friends. I am looking forward to another summer of novices, intermediates and advanced rows—with some inflatables along for the ride, of course! Cheers, ParsonsCREW

To all the AYC Maidens,How much do you all wish that right now you were sailing on a run along Lake Morey’s shores? I can genuinely say that it took me a long time to adjust back to a daily routine that didn’t include applying sunscreen, wearing a PFD, and praying that the motor boat would start every morning. And don’t even get me started that there hasn’t been any capsizing (whether intentional or unintentional) on a regular basis. It was definitely a weird transition. Now as I look out my window at the mounting snow and ice, I can’t help but picture the wonderful times we shared together out on the lake, as well as back on dry land in the good old sailing shack. I miss camp every day and I hope that everyone is already excited for summer 2011. I have no doubt that Aloha will take the Tri-Camp Regatta by storm this year! After all, with our artfully crafted sea shanties and beautiful wind dances, surely nothing can stop us. I hope you all remember to JIBE JIBE JIBE TACK. JIBE TACK, JIBE TACK. JIBE JIBE JIBE TACK. JIBE TACK. TACK TACK TACK!! Aloha,AlexisSAILING

Hello everyone! In February, camp seems far away. It’s hard to think about sunny Lake Morey and Aloha 2011 when school is being cancelled for a snow day, right? Wrong. There are little things that I do throughout the year to keep Aloha in my life (and you can too!). These little habits of mine have developed over the years, and have become especially important in my everyday life over the last month. On January 9th of this year, I packed up my green shorts, my tie, (and yes, a few other things…) and set off for Barcelona, Spain. I’m spending a semester abroad here, and I didn’t want to leave home without some of my most comforting things. As I tirelessly try to immerse myself in the Spanish culture, I wear my Aloha green shorts to bed and have my tie hanging on my doorknob. When I go for runs along the busy Barcelona streets, I imagine myself running around Lake Morey, trying to figure out if I would be closer to Aloha Manor or the Lake Morey Inn. It’s these little things that make me feel closer to home and, of course, closer to summer! So if you’re feeling like school and winter will never end, whip out those green shorts (you don’t even have to worry about washing them, because they never get dirty!) and wear them around the house. You’ll feel like you’re back at camp, where your biggest worry is whether it’s grilled cheese or chicken patties for lunch. Meet me on the main porch in June, and I’ll convince you that chili and cornbread is actually the best meal at camp! Grace HeartyLANDSPORTS UMBRELLA

Greetings Aloha! Lea and I were talking the other day and reminiscing about all the great times we enjoyed last summer: preparing for Once Upon A Mattress, gathering around the Wedding Ring on Sunday nights and singing quiet camp songs, playing guitar on the Hale porch, singing C-A-M-P-A-L-O-H-A in the Hale at the top of our lungs for fishing boats passing by, Kanakapella rehearsals, improv games, and so much more!

We are so looking forward to next summer! Our entire team is returning: Lea, David, Cara, and Anne! Also, we might be having a counselor who leads a dance program – woohoo! We have already begun discussing options for the show and are nearing a decision – you’ll have to wait until the first camp assembly to learn what the show will be....

PLEASE… if you play a musical instrument: BRING IT TO CAMP this summer! We will have lots more opportunities for campers and counselors to make music. Also, don’t forget to bring sheet music of your favorite songs for Aloha Entertains, preludes, and other times. We can’t wait to see you in June!Aloha, Anne and LeaPERFORMING ARTS

Greetings from Walla Walla, Washington! I hope you all are having a great start to the new year, cuz I know I am. I had an amazing winter break and got to work at Winter Family camp with many familiar Lanakila and Aloha counselor and camper friends alike. If I didn’t get enough camp just from that, we tried to have a little C’07 reunion in NY, which was the best thing ever. Now I’m back at school with a science heavy course load, a job at the gym, and running Whitman’s student bike shop. I’m incredibly busy, but very happy at the same time, and am constantly thinking about and remembering things from the summer.

I also want to give a huge shout out to Pines (CLAP!) and the bike department! I miss you all so much and wish I could do crazy singing lake rides and plan trips everyday instead of study. Despite the winter I’ve been on my bike a bunch, out on the road, in the snow when I came home to VT for winter break, and down the hallways and stairs of my dorm - gotta keep it interesting! I hope all of you are making the best of your school years and the winter too! Aloha,ZephyrBIKING

My life IS a Parasol. 1. Right now I have a craft table set up in the living room (and let me tell you, our living room is not really big enough to have a permanent craft table in it!). I like to make cards, and jewellery, and photo albums, and just generally muck around with glitter and stamps and glue!

2. I also take a lot of photos during the year. But I don’t leave the films abandoned in a dark corner – I ALWAYS develop & print mine! (ie: upload them on my computer…).

3. Admittedly the closest I’ve come to Woodworking was making a spaceship out of a giant cardboard box with my niece and nephew… but it was an awesome spaceship!

If you’re pining for the Parasol, here’s your challenge: go make a mess! Look through a lens! Build something! That’s right, put a little glittery sparkle in your life! (Just make sure that you “Seriously… Finish It”). peace, love & a.r.t.ErinARTS & CRAFTS PARASOL

Newsfrom your ALOHA Counselors

Well, Aloha, hello! After leaving you all in August, I packed up my bags and moved up to Clinton, New York to begin my next big chapter after my gap year: College! First semester was a whirlwind of meeting new friends, dabbling in new activities, taking new classes (I took my first ballet class ever!), and experiencing the occasional bout of homesickness. Luckily, I got to share the Hamilton campus with Miss Louisa Savage! We got a lovely brunch with Ashley Willimitus in the beginning of the year and saw many members of C’09 on campus tours as they begin their own college journeys. Claire Maggiotto even came out to support me at my first college Ultimate Frisbee game versus Colgate.

I spent New Years week working at Hulbert Winter Family Camp. It was like one continuous camp reunion! Highlights include sledding down club hill with Catie Nickerson and Rachel Dobronyi, baking Shel bread with Shel, distracting Anne Holly as she tried to study for exams, and co-leading “These Green Hills” and “The Moose Song” during the New Years talent show. The Aloha ladies (and men) spent a few minutes up at the Lanakila castle at midnight on New Years Eve lighting candles, singing songs, and sharing an Aloha introduction with a camper who will be joining Aloha 2011! Needless to say, we were all so excited. We jabbered at her non-stop about camp! If she wasn’t excited before, she is now! What greater joy is there than welcoming someone new into the Aloha family?

It’s back to school now. Hamilton is under feet of snow and going outside to get to class requires long underwear, a down jacket, and immense fortitude of heart. Sometimes I grumble about the weather, but then I think that if you were all with me, I’d be singing about it instead, and that warms me up. Canoodles,Libby Chamberlin

I’m up in the very chilly region of central New York at Hamilton College, studying to be a French major with a double minor in Philosophy and Religious Studies. All this snow and freezing weather (-16 degrees this morning, anyone?) has me longing for the MUCH warmer days on Lake Morey, running around the lake with all of you! Well, with the running people. But really, I’d just want to be back in sunny Fairlee! I can’t offer up anything else that’s exciting, but I do plan on spending my junior year in Paris-- so that’s definitely something to look forward to! I hope all of you are well, and are finding ways to get outside and enjoy the weather-- wherever you are! Meanwhile, I get to see Libby Chamberlin’s face every day... it’s always nice to have a fellow Aloha Maiden close by!Aloha to all the kanakas out there,Louisa Savage

Will I ever be able to enter a clothing store without looking for Aloha green? Stop humming Those Silent Hills when I need a respite from a challenging day? Not feel that swagger in my step whenever I am on a trail? Not find myself on Morey’s shore in the summer? I hope not! I know that I did not spend many weeks at camp last summer, but my every day of Aloha 2010 was a gift. The alumni trip of 14 stalwart paddlers to the Rangeley Lakes in July and the 2010 Reunion made it ever so clear that our summers at Aloha bind us together in a way that few other experiences can.

As I write I am enjoying another weekly snow day (yes, teachers like them too). It‘s keeping me from my 7th grade science and math students, my teaching intern, and my Rube Goldberg machine building and math teams. Needless to say, Berwick Academy keeps me busy. My students and I are studying astronomy, and I keep thinking of the stars and good company we share on clear nights after taps on the tennis court below Old Hideaway. I’m enjoying all this snow, too. With our dog Indy, Jerry and I have been snowshoeing the trails of Durham. Thank you for all the possibilities you bring to each summer. See you at Aloha 2011!Woody Needell

G’day from down under!I am currently writing from the warmer side of the world where it is Summer (and an exciting one at that)! I have been fortunate enough to incorporate Aloha into my vacation this year as Joanne Ramsey (2009 Sailing counselor) came to stay. We had quite the adventure, including numerous road trips (filled with Aloha singing the entire way). We tripped to a farm in the country with Hive counselor Catherine Bleakley. We canoed (crashed a few times), swam in the lake that is filled for the first time in 10+ years (Australia’s drought is over!!), sang camp songs and concluded the night with Aloha Oe under the stars. Then it was off to the beach for surfing, tanning, swimming and a camel ride on the beach. We went camping and pitched a tent (although it is not nearly as luxurious as camp tents) it was still a great relaxing break filled with many friendly koala, kangaroo and wombat neighbors. I am also excited to report I have decided to become a primary school teacher and will be starting uni (finally I know!) in March 2011! I’m missing Aloha each and every one of you daily! Lots of love,Libby Cotter Page 20

It’s been a busy and fun fall and winter in Northern Virginia. I’ve been teaching lots of different levels in math. I managed to sprain my ankle in epic fashion while coaching goalies for the soccer teams. (I guess it’s a good thing I haven’t been able to find an adult diving team!) But even more fun that those, I’ve seen a bunch of camp people: Courtney, Matthew and Olivia came to DC and we all hung out with Grace Hearty and ate lots of cupcakes, I saw Anne Holly and Elizabeth Davis for dinner, and get to see alum Lara Ramsey pretty frequently. The best part of my “real life” though...playing with my nephews! All four of them are awesome (and all are 3 or younger). Huge MISS YOU to Club X and the swimming department.xx Lizza Sandoe

Doug, Olivia, Matthew and I spent Thanksgiving in Antigua - sailing, kayaking and hiking in the rainforest - all departments I wish I could frequent at camp. We spent a week at Winter Family Camp and loved seeing all of the Aloha counselors and campers that were there, including my nieces, Lauren and Caroline. The rest of our time has been spent at the pool for Olivia’s meets or at Matthew’s basketball and lacrosse games. It feels like Vermont this winter with all of the snow, so we’ve been sledding and skiing and will spend the weekend celebrating Olivia’s 13th birthday skiing with Lauren and Caroline. I often find myself singing “These Green Hills” and have been eating excessive amounts of s’mores. Can’t wait to see everyone in Vermont in June!Courtney Kylander

Aloha from Gambier, Ohio!I hope everyone is having a great winter, and not getting too swamped by snow. Right now, I’m at school in Ohio, studying history and French. Though I love it, nothing gets me out of those winter blues quite like thinking of XRX and Aloha: warm days on the hillside, the cooler nights watching soccer on the game field, knowing what time it is by the sound of those beautiful trumpet notes always bring warmth to my heart. Memories of Catie Nickerson’s unparalleled (even by Beyoncé) “Single Ladies” dance, the Job Fair, and 4th of July on Lake Morey’s Shore never fail to make me grin. However, I know that every day is a day closer to another BEST SUMMER EVER 2011, and I cannot wait. A very special shout out to XR’s Tent 3: Kate, Natalie, Jenna, Albane, Mikayla and Elise! I hope to see all of you back this summer!!All my love,Caroline Glaenzer

Hey Aloha 2010 and OH10,I hope you’re all having a great year! I’m going crazy missing you all! I can’t WAIT for SUMMER and this snow is driving me nuts and I want to be outside smelling the dirt and sitting in the pine needles and hanging out with all of YOU!!!!!!! Life is good, busy, kids are good, growing up. John says hello to you all and is especially looking forward to playing anything as long as any of you are going to play it with him. : ) Teaching is going well... I’m singing a recital in May of songs that I wrote – some with titles like “the forest” and “the summer day.” I’m keeping myself sane by painting, late at night after the kids go to bed. Look what I painted... can you tell what I am dreaming about??!!With a hug, and aloha,Cara Latham

It’s been a busy year, I’ve been learning heaps in art school and I’m still in the seeing-past-lives business, which surprisingly is in high demand despite this whole economical crisis thing going on. Yes we can (see past lives)! I cannot wait for the summer to start though, getting up at 7 am to go to the Art Barn all day, knowing that I’d probably get to make a felt monkey is SOOO much better than getting up at 7am to get on a crowded bus to go to school. Who else hates crowded buses? And those people hovering over unoccupied seats like hawks, right? I miss you all and I hope to see everyone back at Aloha for another best summer everAna Prescott

Things are in full swing in the second semester of my sophomore year at Gettysburg College and I am really excited to study abroad in Paris in the fall. I will be studying International Affairs and French there, and the bulk of my courses will be at the Université de Paris, so I will be in class with French students. One of the things I discovered about myself at camp this past summer was that being outside and exercising invigorates me and makes me more in love with my life. So for the first time in fourteen years, I am taking dance classes. I also try to take in my surroundings while walking to class, instead of staring at the pavement as I hurry along, trying to remember whether or not I forgot to brush my hair, or what a secant line is. As the months go by, I am more eager to be back at Aloha in my green shorts, playing camouflage behind Old Hideaway and singing “Aloha Oe”. I am ready for another Best Summer Ever!!Jennie Maholchic

My second year of college is going incredibly well. I love all of my classes (yes, I like to learn and I enjoy going to school) and have been reading tons of great books because I am an English major and that’s what we do. On the side I am playing lots of field hockey and getting in some swimming when I can, though it’s a little tough since my school no longer has a pool. I have been working extra hard to finish my study abroad application so that I can study in the south of France next summer! I’m super excited for that, and I wish I did not have to wait so long to go. I have had a few camp sightings in the past few weeks, including a small gathering of some fellow C’07ers and a lovely dinner in Newton with a few ladies who will soon make up C’11. Wishing for Lake Morey, s’mores, and really loud singing in my life right now. Aloha! Holly Spicer

Well hello ladies, It seems so long ago that we last saw each other! I hope each and every maiden is doing well during the off season. This past December I got the chance to work at Winter Family Camp and it was so much fun! Seeing camp with so much snow and being there while it was so cold was very weird, especially thinking back to the extremely hot days of last summer. Looking at all the snow-filled tents made me think of all of you.

Right now I am in my second semester of college in Salem, Massachusetts. It is a lot of fun! I taught my roommates “Single Ladies” but when I suggested a Vegetable Off to settle who got the last slice of pizza it did not go over quite as well. Although college is going great, I cannot wait for this semester to be over and to head back to Aloha for yet another “best summer ever” in 2011!

I want to give a great big “SASS!” to Isabella Speciale and Rosemary Leahey. And also a loud “Hey you! Get in my belly!” to Evie Elson, Kelsie Chaffee and Eliza Laible. I send my love to SevHev 10 and to the Potato Heads. See you all this summer!Fierce and Aloha,Catie Nickerson

Dear all,Greetings from Germany!! I’ve had a stressful time since Camp, I handed in my final thesis (guess it brought me luck that the eighty-something pages were in a file on the tent shelf the entire summer – though I didn’t look at them at all), and now after a semester with an immense workload, the final days before the beginning of my final exams are dawning. Before me are 13 exams spread over three months – yes I won’t be able to come to Aloha this summer, I’ll still be having exams in July. But the Aloha calendar is hanging on my work room wall and keeps reminding me of a great time. All the best to all of you,Biggi Bader

Hello everyone! I am writing this, while staring out the window at the biggest mound of snow (perfect for building a fort if it wasn’t a solid chunk of ice) and thinking about this past summer and the amazing times that were had on the shores of Lake Morey. I very much look forward to coming back and seeing everyone’s lovely face.

Right now I have entered into the period of my

life which I like to call, crazy-no sleep-at school until nine-relentless singing-spring musical phase. My school is putting on the Disney production of “Beauty and the Beast,” and this will be all that I do until our performances in April. Needless to say, “Be Our Guest” and “Gaston” will be permanently stuck in my head for the next two months. PA lovers, notice I said two months, and not two weeks....That is how long it takes people in the real world, to put on a production ;) I hope that everyone is well and not too sick of the snow. It will be gone shortly and we will be returning to the Green Mountain state for the greatest seven weeks ever! I look forward to it and hope that you do too.Cheers, Lea Hodgkins

After camp ended, I returned to my fabulous life in Seattle. I am working at a pool, lifeguarding and teaching swim lessons (not too different from my Aloha world!). I’m lucky enough to get a chance to see Molly Streeter, former Aloha camper and now Hive counselor, a few times a week since she is a manager for the high school swim team. With all of Seattle’s infamous rain and the concrete windowless walls of my pool, I am dearly missing the sunshine and the view of Lake Morey, but at least I still have some water to splash around in! I miss you all so very much, and I’m so glad to have been part of Aloha 2010. I hope everyone is having a fantastic winter, and I’m trying to line things up so that I can make an appearance for summer 2011!Laurel Needell

Camp Dreamsby Amelia Huang

This is my camp dream, what is yours like?

Does it shine like the sheen of a wet canoe?

Perhaps it flows like a river, twisted askew?

Does it dance like the flames of a one log fire?

Or soothe like a hike in Aloha attire?

Maybe it soars like the loons’ lonely wail.

Does it energize like a day on the trail?

Could it calm like watching your paddle slice the water?

Or thrill like dodging around in white water!

Does it glow like a dying fire’s bright ashes?

Would it resonate like the thunder’s loud crashes?

Does it rouse like an icy cold morning shower?

Maybe it’d blossom like a quiet wildflower…

Or shatter like an axe shatters wood?

Would you like to help us spread the message of the Alohas? We are always looking for ways to interest families in the value of camping and in our quality programs for children. Even families with children not yet ready for camp can begin to think about including a summer at Aloha, Hive or Lanakila in their future. If you know of families who might be interested in knowing more, we can send you brochures or a video. Or perhaps you might be willing to gather interested families together; we would be happy to come with slides and stories. Please contact one of the directors or [email protected].
