An old couple had worked very hard and saved every paisa theypossibly could to go on a pilgrimage. Finally they had enough mioney to set out.On the way they passed through a small village and decided to spend the night inone of the inns there. Kamlesh, the owner told the couple to leave their belongingswith him and freshen up for dinner.

They had been warned that there would be many thieves on theway and were quite careful with their money pouch. So they refused and tookturns to sit holding the bag containing their money while they had dinner.

To keep the pouch safe they decided to use it as a pillow. To theirhorror the next morning, they discovered it was gone ! Kamlesh and his wife hadentered the room and removed the bag while they were asleep. The two were indespair. They would not be able to complete their pilgrimage and went to Kamlesh.“Where is our money ?” they demanded.

After arguing for a while, the elderly couple walked out clutchingtheir belongings. As they walked through the village, they told people their story.To see the couple get justice, the villagers told them to go to Krishnakant, theking's counselor who famous for his sense of fairness. Krishnakant heard theirstory and said’ I have a drum, in my house. If you tell the truth in front of thedrum, it starts beating by itself, come to my house tomorrow morning and carrythe drum to the court. On your way, tell the drum your story. I will send word toKamlesh to carry the drum back in the afternoon. I will be ready with the verdictin the evening’. The next morning the old couple started walking with the magicdrum to the court . It was very heavy. The court was at a distance and the twowere soon tired. So they stopped to rest under a big banyan tree.

The old man said ‘We will never get justice in a strange kingdom.I was so careful with money, yet we lost it. May be the Lord does not wish us tovisit him’ As he uttered these words, the sound of drumbeats was heard. The oldcouple was very happy ‘ We may have no witness, but God knows we are speakingthe truth’ Then they stood up and, after drrinking some water from a nearbystream, they picked up the drum which to their surprise, had become muchlighter. ‘God must have heard us and has made our load lighter’ they said happily.In the afternoon, Kamlesh and his wife carried the drum back from the court.They too found it very heavy and decided to sit under the big tree to rest. As soonas they sat down, the wife said ‘ Why did you have to steal the money? Now seewhat a mess we are in’.

Kamlesh replied angrily, ‘Don't blame me. Who unlocked the doorand showed me where the pouch was kept? Do you really believe this is a magicaldrum? I am sure no one knows the truth. Now Krishnakant himself jumped out ofthe drum. I am the witness. I have heard every word you said, and also what theold couple said. You will return the stolen money and also pay three times aspenalty’. The old couple was delighted when they heard the verdict.
