THE BENEFICIARY OF THIS YEAR’S CARNIVAL IS:

NAOMI HOUSE AND JACKSPLACE are hospices for children and young people with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions. We provide care to young people and their families in communities across Berkshire, Dorset, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Surrey, West Sussex and Wiltshire.

We have two specialist units: Naomi House cares for children up to the age of 16, and Jacksplace offers care for young people aged 16 or over. Each unit is purpose-built and offers an appropriate, engaging environment for each age group. We support over 350 life-limited and life-threatened families each year with respite care in our purpose built hospices.

Each year we aim to raise £7 million to help us run both of our hospices. We receive only 18% of our funding from the Department of Health: the remaining amount is raised and donated by individuals, groups and businesses. Many people get involved by fundraising for us, whereas other individuals choose to volunteer their time.

The care and support that Naomi House offers is unique in central southern England. The hospices are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and deliver a range of services to help relieve families of the everyday pressures of looking after a child or young person with a life-limiting condition.

Shaftesbury carnival is very pleased to welcome back the CAN-AM Car Club. A variety of classic American cars will be driving up through the High Street before the afternoon procession. They will be leaving the Medical Centre at 2.50 pm and will be displayed on Park Walk from 3pm. They will also be returning back through the town in front of the evening procession leaving the fire station at 6.50pm

SHAFTESBURY CARNIVAL COMMITTEEWould welcome any new members. If you feel you can spare us some of your time to help this very worthwhile cause, please contact the secretary Gill Wallis on 01747 854458.

Derek Beer, John Peel Café High Street, Shaftesbury has organised the fish & chip quiz night. Shaftesbury carnival committee are indebted to Steve Hodson of Serendipity, High Street, Shaftesbury for engraving many of the cups free of charge for yet another year.We would also like to thank Signrite Signs & Graphics, Wincombe Business Park, Shaftesbury for their continued support in updating our advertising road signs each year.

A Message from the Chairman of Shaftesbury Carnival Committee As some of you will know, I have been involved with Shaftesbury Carnival for a number of years and the amazing thing I have noticed over the years, is the tremendous support we get from our Community in and outside of the Town. Our sponsors, without their financial help, our chosen local charities would not benefit so much. My sincere thanks to our Traders and Retailers. There is also a lot of work that has to be done to make the Carnival a success and as a small committee; we rely very much on a huge number of non-committee helpers, especially on Carnival Day for marshals, collectors, barrier and road sign erectors, judges etc. to get the show on the road. Thank you to you all.It is that dedication and enthusiasm which has passed from generation to generation for 13 decades that gives you the cheapest and probably the best entertainment you have seen for a long time. So please “Do Best Can” (our Carnival motto) and try to give at least £1.00 each to our collectors and this will help secure Carnivals for the future and the many charities we support. My heartfelt thanks to everyone who helps us to keep our Carnival tradition alive, now in its 136th year.

Message from the Wessex Grand Prix Chairman Hello, my name is Dave Bowen and for the second year running I have been given the opportunity of chairing the Wessex Grand Prix Circuit of Carnivals. For those who may wonder what this is all about let me enlighten you a little. The Wessex is a group of people who enjoy the world of carnival. The association, consisting of eight towns Sturminster Newton, Mere, Frome, Shaftesbury, Gillingham, Castle Cary, Trowbridge & Warminster, covering 3 counties, Somerset, Wiltshire & Dorset. Other members are the entries, Clubs, Walking Groups of Masqueraders, Pairs and Single Masqueraders. We have an on-going competition over the season in which the various entries go head to head in their different classes. Week by week we release that evening results to let them have an idea of how they are doin. Just to add a little bit of a twist we hold back some of the later results to keep people guessing who won at the end of the season. The entries do find out at our annual presentation dinner dance in December, a very eagerly awaited event for us all.As you can see carnival is a big part of our lives not only on carnival nights but the building of the entries, not only the big floats (or carts as we call them) but also the groups, pairs and single masqueraders, costume design and making it happen over the rest of the year. Many of the members meet up during the year at various social and fund raising events. Both the town committees and the entries put a lot of hard work into carnival not only on the night but over the year as a whole. On a bit of a downside, the cost of staging a carnival and the legislation involved for both town and entry, things seem to get harder each year and to their credit both town and members do their level best to keep carnival alive for us to enjoy for years to come I hope. So, to this end, could I please ask you to dig a little deeper into your pocket to make the collection a little bigger to help out your local charities and towns keep the fantastic tradition going for many more years to come. Let us keep one of the best west country traditions going. Let’s face it, how much would you have to pay to take your family to see a film or show these days? Carnival could be called a free night out, but where else would you get up to 2 hours entertainment with no cost. I would like to wish you all an enjoyable carnival day and evening. Dave Bowen, Wessex Chairman
